Review – Short Story Petite Clothing Subscription Box

by Lina Clémence May 30, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

*This post was created in partnership with Short Story.

There’s a new petite clothing subscription box in town, specially curated for petite women! If you’re petite and have ever tried a clothing subscription service, you may have run into the problem of a real lack of options in your size. A few years ago, I worked briefly as a stylist for one of the major subscription box companies where I saw firsthand how they lacked actual petite sizes for their clients, despite advertising them heavily. It was very frustrating as a stylist to see so many dissatisfied clients who specially asked for petite clothing and ended up receiving only one, or absolutely none, just due to a complete lack of inventory.

So when the petite subscription box, Short Story, reached out, I was excited to see someone stepping up to serve this market! Below is my experience using the service, and if you’re interested in trying them out yourself, this referral link will waive your first $25 styling fee.

Not sure if this service is for you? You may find this petite clothing visual helpful.

The Process

How Short Story Box Works:

  • Sizes they carry: 00P – 18P
  • Styling Fee: $25, which is credited toward any items you decide to keep
  • Returns: 5 days to try on and decide. Prepaid return envelope included
  • US only at this time

After signing up, you will be directed to take a Style Quiz which is where your budget, sizing, fit, and style preferences will be noted. Along with questions about your height and the usual sizes you wear, you can also further dial in on your personal style by noting typical fit issues, general style and color preferences, and even pieces you’d rather not receive. There’s also a note section where you can leave more detailed information. A petite stylist will use these answers to pick items specifically for you.

I admit I am a picky customer, so I was very curious about what my stylist would choose for me. I asked for clothes only (no shoes or accessories), and kept my color preferences very neutral.

Box Arrival

The items arrived in a branded soft pink medium-sized box. Take note of this in case your living situation requires less enticing packaging (you may need to redirect packages to a work, paid mailbox, or friend/family address). Inside, the clothing items were nicely folded, stacked, and wrapped in tissue. An insert includes a note from your stylist, a list of the box contents, and an itemized price list. A large pre-paid envelope is included for any returns.

The Pieces

Try-On Review

First, A Little About Me:

I am 4’11” tall, short-waisted (longer legs, short torso), narrow on top, and curvier on the bottom. I usually wear an xxs/00 on top, and am somewhere between a size 24/25/0 on bottom. Being so short and also having a short torso means petite sizes will ALWAYS fit better on me. I really need those shorter proportions when it comes to necklines, lengths, rises, armholes, sleeves, hems, etc. I often get away with regular clothing sizes through styling tricks or embracing oversized fits, but when it comes down to it, if I can find an item I love in a petite size, it’s what I’ll reach for and will ultimately look better on me.

Ok, let’s see what my petite stylist picked for me:

Items:

  • 24/7 Knot Front Tee – petite size XS
  • Kyle High Rise Slim Fit Ankle Skinny – petite size 0P

These first two items are both in petite sizes and definitely in my style wheelhouse. A high-rise grey wash distressed skinny is always welcome in my wardrobe, and a knotted drop shoulder stripe tee is fun mix of classic with an edge. Note the perfect petite proportions: the cropped tee ends right at the waist, the high-rise is proportioned to my frame, and look at that perfect ankle length on this petite jean.

Items:

  • Blake Fitted Cardigan – petite size XSP (fits like XXSP)
  • Kyle High Rise Slim Fit Ankle Skinny – petite size 0P

Same petite jean, but now let’s look at this cardigan. Also in a petite size, this fitted cardigan follows my figure and hits at the perfect spot on my wrist. After so many years of wearing loose and oversized top layers, it’s nice to have something a little more fitted and short to pair with this season’s wide and baggy bottoms. In fact, I already wore this cardigan on a trip to Vegas where it paired much better with a pair of wide-leg pants than the oversized fits currently in my closet.

Items:

  • Colette Contour Bodysuit – petite size XXSP
  • Kyle High Rise Slim Fit Ankle Skinny – petite size 0P

Ok, this bodysuit is something I was really interested in trying. In my “about me” above, I noted that not only am I pretty short, but I also have a short torso. This means that even petite proportions on tops can end up a little long on me, making things like one-piece bathing suits or bodysuits very difficult to find. Not only does this petite bodysuit fit, but it’s also a nice thick fabric that makes going braless a possibility. Very excited about this gem! I won’t show you the full bodysuit because I’m not about to put photos like that of me on the internet, but as you can see it’s a nice smooth fit (it would bunch if the bodysuit were too long for me).

Items:

  • Colette Contour Bodysuit – petite size XXSP
  • Porto Striped Ponte Pants – petite size 0P

Pants are always a tough thing for me to find so I wanted to have my stylist include a pair for me to try. This petite pair has a nice bit of stretch and good rise. I prefer my ankle lengths a tad shorter than this, so I’d end up getting these hemmed if I were to keep.

Items:

  • Texture & Thread Front Knot Jacquard Top – non-petite size XXS
  • Porto Striped Ponte Pants – petite size 0P

Here we have the single item sent to me not in a petite size. As soon as I tried on this top, I could immediately feel the difference in fit. The sleeve and length could both stand to be a tad shorter, but let’s be real…I wear way more oversized proportions than this on the regular so I definitely recognize the petite-friendly fit of this item.

Final Thoughts

My main curiosity when it came to the Short Story subscription box was just how many actual petite clothing items they’d be able to send me. Turned out, 5 of the 6 pieces sent to me were indeed an actual petite size, evident by the good fit and proportions. The one item that was not a petite size ultimately felt a little “off” especially after trying on so many properly proportioned items just before it, but still qualifies as quite petite-friendly in my book.

From my personal experience, Short Story gave a much better hit rate of actual petite-sized items than what I saw from similar services and is worth a try if you are a true petite and enjoy the idea of subscription box personal styling. You can give Short Story a try with the first styling fee waived through this link.

Is It Ok For Skincare Products To Tingle? – Beautiful With Brains

by Lina Clémence May 30, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

The biggest skincare question that’s doing the rounds now: is it ok for skincare products to tingle? Imagine this scenario:

Uh oh, there it goes again. Your’s skin tingling. Just after applying that new serum. Is it meant to do that? It must be, right? If it tingles, it works. Beauty magazines have repeated that a dozen times. And you saw that influencer say the same thing in her “nighttime GRWM” like it was gospel.

But then… Why is my skin turning redder? What’s going on? Is this normal?! Not really. Sometimes the tingling is a sign that the product is working. Other times, it’s a warning you need to get that nasty bugger off your face before it gives you a bad rash. So if you’re asking if it’s ok for skincare products to tingle, and how to know when the tingle is a sign of incoming glow or income irritation, read on:

Tingling, Stinging, Burning: What’s Normal and What’s Not?

Why does tingling happen in the first place? The skin on your face is full of tiny nerve endings, and they sit really close to the surface. When strong ingredients hit your skin, here’s what’s happening underneath:

  • Your nerve fibers are reacting to the ingredient.
  • Your blood vessels may dilate slightly, creating that warm or flushed feeling.
  • Your immune system might even kick in a little, especially if your barrier is compromised.

This is the inflammation process. Now, inflammation isn’t always bad. It’s part of how your body heals and adapts. But when it comes to skincare, too much of it = irritation, and repeated irritation = damaged skin barrier. Not cute.

Sometimes a little tingle is fine. Other times, it’s your skin begging for a break. So let’s decode what each sensation really means. Think of it like a 3-level system:

Level 1. Tingle = Totally Fine

This is the baby stage of sensation. It feels like a light fizz or a whisper of pins and needles that disappears fast-usually under a minute. No heat, no redness, just a little “hey, I’m here” from the product. This is common with exfoliating acids or active serums, especially if you’ve got slightly sensitive skin or your barrier’s feeling fragile that day. If it’s short and sweet, you’re good.

Level 2. Stingle = Keep an Eye On It

Yes, “stingle” is made up (I think Renee Rouleau used it first), but it fits. This is when the tingle starts to overstay its welcome. It’s a little more intense, maybe lasts up to two minutes, and your skin might look slightly pink or feel warm to the touch. This often happens if you’re using a stronger product or layering actives. For most people, it’s still within the safe zone. But if it keeps happening or starts lasting longer, it’s a clue that your skin might be getting irritated. If your skin feels warm and flushed but recovers quickly, you’re probably fine. But take it as a warning shot.

      Level 3. Sting/Burn = Nope. Hard Pass.

This one’s not subtle. It’s sharp. It’s hot. It doesn’t fade. Your skin feels like it’s throwing a tantrum – and it probably is. This kind of reaction usually comes with redness, heat, and that creeping sense of “I’ve made a mistake.” If it keeps going for more than a minute or feels worse by the second, rinse your face. Don’t try to push through. Nothing good is coming from that. The only time this kind of burn is expected is during a pro treatment like a chemical peel. In that case, you’re in a controlled setting with someone watching your skin like a hawk – and if the person does its job well, when this reaction happens, she’ll starting removing the peel from your skin pronto.

When Is It OK For Skincare Products To Tingle?

Sometimes, the tingling’s normal. If any of these ingredients are in your lotions and potions – and the tingling is annoying rather than painful, you’re good:

        Chemical Exfoliants

That’s the case with chemical exfoliants (don’t let the “chemical” name fool you, these exfoliants rock – safely!). Chemical exfoliants can be divided into two big families.

        Alpha hydroxy acids include:

        • Glycolic acid
        • Lactic acid
        • Malic acid
        • Tartaric acid

        Beta Hydroxy Acid includes:

All these acids can make your skin tingle slightly when you apply them. It feels like tiny needles gently pricking your skin. Sometimes, there’s some heat too. But the tingling only lasts for a few seconds. If it feels like your skin’s being gently poked by invisible elves with feather-sized pitchforks—that’s the vibe. That gentle tingling means the product is penetrating the skin, and there’s nothing to worry about. It’s kinda like your skin going, “Yup, got it. We’re working now.”

By the way, not everyone experiences this tingling when they use these acids. It usually depends on how sensitive your skin is and how high the concentration you’re using is. The higher it is, the more likely it’ll tingle your skin. So if your friend’s over there applying the same acid and feeling nothing while you’re wondering if this tingling is a bit too much, it doesn’t mean the product’s faulty. You might just have the skin of a Disney princess while she’s rocking dragon-hide resilience.

        Best Picks:

        • Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum ($90.00): Don’t let the name fool you. This exfoliant has both salicylic acid to unclog pores and glycolic acid to fade away the dark spots pimples sometimes leave behind. Available at Cult Beauty and SpaceNK.
        • Paula’s Choice Advanced Smoothing Treatment 10% AHA ($39.00): This super-concentrated exfoliating cocktail contains Glycolic, Lactic, Malic, and Salicylic Acids to smoothen out imperfections, fade away dark spots, and treat acne. Available at Cult Beauty, Dermstore, Paula’s Choice, Selfridges, and SpaceNK.
        • The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + HA 2% ($8.90): A simple Lactic Acid exfoliant enriched with Hyaluronic Acid to exfoliate and hydrate skin at the same time. Available at Beauty Bay, Boots, Cult Beauty, Sephora, SpaceNK, The Ordinary, and Ulta.

Related: Chemical VS Physical Exfoliation: Which One Is Better?

        Enzyme Exfoliants

Not into acids? Enzyme exfoliants are a gentler option for sensitive skin. These come from fruit enzymes like papain (from papaya), bromelain (from pineapple), or pumpkin. They work by breaking down the proteins that hold dead skin cells together, so they lift off more softly – no harsh tingling, no micro-tears.

Most enzyme exfoliants don’t tingle at all. But if your skin barrier is a little fragile or you’re using them with other actives, you might still feel a mild buzz. As long as it fades fast and doesn’t burn, it’s usually fine. They’re a solid option if you want smoother skin but your face throws a tantrum every time you go near glycolic acid.

        Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid)

Vitamin C is a popular antioxidant that fights free rascals, brighten skin, and even boosts the sun protection of your sunscreen. But not all forms are created equal. While Vitamin C derivatives don’t cause any problems, the pure type (L-Ascorbic Acid) can feel a little spicy at high concentrations (like 15% or 20%) – especially if your skin’s not used to it or if you’ve layered it over exfoliants.

That slight tingle with Vitamin C? Totally normal. It should calm down quickly and not come with heat or stinging. But if your skin burns or stays red, it’s either too strong for you or your barrier’s not ready for it yet.

Pro tip: If you’re layering Vitamin C after exfoliating, be extra careful. That combo can make your skin more reactive – even if both products are great on their own. For best results, I recommend you use Vitamin C in the morning and exfoliate at night.

        Best Picks:

        • MaeLove Glow Booster ($27.95): The cheapest Vitamin C serum in this list, it does everything the others do, but it contains a citrus extract that may be irritating for sensitive skin. Available at Maelove.
        • Paula’s Choice C15 Booster ($46.75): It’s enriched with Hyaluronic Acid and glycerin to deeply hydrate skin. Available at Cult Beauty, Dermstore, Paula’s Choice, Sephora, and SpaceNK.
        • Skinceuticals CE Ferulic ($169.00): The original Vitamin C serum, it costs an arm and a leg, but it works wonders and delivers what it promises. Available at Dermstore and Skinceuticals.

Related: All Forms Of Vitamin C Used In Skincare: Which One Is Right For You?

WARNING! If your skin is very sensitive, the tingling sensation may turn into stinging or burning. If that happens, wash the exfoliant off your face and never use it again. Your skin’s trying to break up with that product and you need to respect its boundaries. Just because a product is safe, it doesn’t mean it won’t cause problem for anyone at all. No glow is worth a chemical heartbreak.

When Is It Not OK For Skincare Products To Tingle?

There are some other things lurking in your cosmetics that can make your skin tingle. They are:

        • Camphor
        • Menthol
        • Mint
        • Peppermint

With these, it’s a different story entirely. Their tingling is bad news for the skin. Like a toxic ex, they might feel exciting for a second but leave chaos behind.

These ingredients are counter-irritants. That means they cause local inflammation (that’s the tingling feeling, by the way) to reduce the inflammation in deeper tissues. Basically, they substitute one type of inflammation for another. But inflammation is NEVER good for the skin. It’s one of the main causes of premature aging. So, the less you use these ingredients, the better. If you don’t use them at all, great. It’s not like they’re doing anything important in cosmetics, anyway.

Want to know what ingredients you really need to avoid in your skincare products? Sign up to the newsletter below to receive the “Skincare Ingredients To Avoid” cheatsheet:

Can Anything Else Make Your Skin Tingle?

It’s very rare that other ingredients make skin tingle. But if you have sensitive skin, your skin barrier is severely compromised, or are allergic to something, the truth is any product can give you a tingle or a stingle… or worse.

If the tingling sensation is very, very gentle, then it is probably ok. But if the tingling:

        • Increases by the minute
        • Turns into stinging or burning
        • Lasts more than a minute
        • Goes hand in hand with redness or peeling

then throw the product away. Your skin obviously doesn’t like what you’re using. And, if your skin barrier is severely compromise, go back to the most basic routine (cleanser, moisturise, sunscreen) until it’s back to normal.

My Acid Serum Used to Sting. Now It Doesn’t. Is It Still Working?

This freaks a lot of people out. You start using an exfoliating acid, it tingles or stings a little at first, and then… nothing. No fizz. No burn. It just sinks in quietly. And suddenly you’re like, Wait-has my skin built immunity? Do I need to upgrade to something stronger?

Short answer? No, your serum didn’t stop working. Your skin just got smarter.

When you first start using acids, especially AHAs like glycolic or lactic acid, that tingle is often a sign your skin barrier is adjusting. Exfoliating acids can temporarily increase sensitivity while your skin learns to tolerate them. But here’s the cool part: over time, they actually help strengthen the skin barrier by encouraging cell turnover and supporting lipid production.

So if the sting disappears? That’s a good thing. It means your skin barrier is more resilient, not that the formula stopped doing its job. The real danger comes when you start chasing the sting. That “no pain, no gain” mindset doesn’t work here. Pushing your skin into constant inflammation by jumping to higher percentages too soon – or layering multiple exfoliants – can leave your skin raw, reactive, or straight-up wrecked.

The goal isn’t to feel it working. The goal is for it to work without drama. No tingling = your skin’s doing just fine. Keep going. No need to escalate.

The Verdict: Is It Ok For Skincare Products To Tingle?

If an exfoliant make your skin slightly tingle, it’s probably ok. But if anything else tingles or stings, throw the product away. It’s not suitable for you.

Acne Series (Facial Wash, Acne Serum, and Acne Cream) Review

by Lina Clémence May 30, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

 Hello bunnies ♥

Happy July ♥

Kulit aku acne prone, sensitive and now oily-oily skin.

sempet kondisi kulitku berubah-berubah dari oily to combination, sekarang balik lagi ke oily.

Jadi setelah seleksi (nyari tau dari ingredients) aku putusin buat coba acne care dari SCARLETT WHITENING. Sekalian aku mau upgrade skincare aku tapi tetep keep it minimalis atau kira2 yang sesuai kulit wajah aku butuhin sih. Jadi disini aku mau ajak kalian kenalan sama produk acne care mereka, yaitu:
SCARLETT Brightening Facial Wash, Acne Serum, Acne Day Cream dan Acne Night Cream

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Tapi memang produk wajah itu cocok-cocokan yah, jadi aku mau sampein dulu kalo di aku ga cocok bukan berarti produknya ga bagus, yah berarti it’s not for me.

Sebelum lanjut aku mau unfo dulu juga, kalo SCARLETT WHITENING face care udah teruji bebas Merkuri dan Hydroquinon dan produk-produk nya Scarlett udah BPOM semua 🙂 SCARLETT  face care ada 2 series;

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Without further ado, kita mulai review dari facial wash nya yah!

pas liat botolnya, aku langsung OMO cantik banget, tone-tone pink gitu (aku pink maniac), mana ada rose petals pink-merah gitu, botolnya pun gemes langsing kecil gitu, dengan cap buka tutup gitu.

emesh >.<

bottle size 3,4 Fl. Oz. / 100ml

price: IDR 75.00

Facial washnya udah BPOM yah 🙂

Scarlett facial wash ini punya key ingredients nya Glutathione, Aloe Vera, Rose petal dan Vitamin E.

Claim dari Scarlett facial wash ini:

– Mencerahkan wajah

~ Ingredients List ~

~ How To Use ~

just pour out ke tangan kalian secukupnya, jangan lupa basahin wajah dulu baru di apply gently to the face. Kalo di box bilang warm water, kalo aku awal basahin pake warm water, akhir bilas bersih pake cold water, muka bawaannya jadi lebih seger.

~ My Opinion ~

Aku pake ini udah 2 minggu nih. I found this abit hmm.. gimana jelasinnya yah. Jadi aku ga pernah double cleansing kalo ga pake makeup biar ga terlalu ‘cleansing’ sedangkan sehari-hari cuman dirumah yang ga makeup-an gitu. When I use this facial wash 1x awal ngerasa biasa aja, tapi lately, pas hampir 1 minggu pake, I have to double wash my face, karena kayak kurang ngangkat minyak di wajah kalo cuman 1x, pas cuci 2x baru berasa bersih tapi bukan bersih keset, tapi kayak feel nya ‘akhirnya bersih ga berasa wajah berat krna masih ada minyak’

soalnya berasanya juga pas pake exfoliating toner dikapas tuh masih kotor, padahal air buat cuci muka tuh khusus (saking air bikin kulit muka sensitive). Pas kalo cuci nya 2x baru pas pake toner, kapasnya bersih.

untungnya walau cara 2x cuci gitu cukup amazed ga bikin kulit kerasa ketarik or bersih keset kering gitu, menurutku tetep bantu kulit cukup bersih tanpa stripping.

Claim lainnya

~ Ingredients List ~

~ How To Use ~

~ My Opinion ~

Frankly speaking, aku ga nyangka I would like this serum tho.

I still wanna see further results tho, jadi aku mau lanjutin sampe si botol mungil ini kosong kering biar aku bisa kasih update lagi nanti disini.

Now last but not least! the Creams

Percaya ga sih 2 taun lalu aku ga pernah masukin moisturizer ke skin regime aku, just because that time my skin condition is at its worst jadi pake moisturizer is somewhat too much for me. Until last year, when I decided to include that on my everyday skin regime, because I realize how important moisturizer is for the skin. Setelah itu aku ga pernah skip moisturizer. Cuman aku selalu pake moisturizer yg sama buat pagi dan malem until I try SCARLETT.
SCARLETT Acne Cream ada 2 varian for Day dan buat Night

Masing-masing produk dibungkus dalam bentuk pot, ga ada spatulanya jadi menurutku agak kurang hygenis, but selama kalian selalu bersiin sebelum dan setelah pakai then it won’t be a problem sih.

Melihat dari acne-prone skin punya kulit leih cepat berminyak di siang hari, so light-weight and watery moisturizer is much appreciated.

Day Cream

Night Cream

Warnanya both white milk gitu tapi yang night cream lebih ke putih agak kuning and I think scent nya sama keduanya. Scent nya aku suka banget, mungkin for some bakal ga suka tapi aku suka banget wanginya kayak wangi herb yang calming di wajah.

For Day cream sewaktu di apply lebih cepat menyerap dibanding Night cream mungkin karena texture nya juga yah yang bisa jadi pengaruh.

~ Ingredients List ~

ini masing-masing ingredients list nya:

Day cream

Night cream

~ How To Use ~

~ My Opinion ~

First, I love the Day cream texture more than the Night cream, mungkin karena aku biasa pake gel-like moisturizer jadi ga berat diwajah. lalu, second one, aku suka banget sama scent dari Day and Night cream ini, wangi herb yang bener-bener calming, ga strong, tapi pas di apply ke wajah scent nya masih ada, menurutku kayak bantu setelah pake serum yang bau nya agak gimana gitu.

Walau dia di pot kecil yah, isinya banyak, 2 minggu pake tapi kayak isi ga berkurang (apa cuman perasaan aja yah).

but, yes ada tapinya, walau yang day cream nya udh cukup watery tapi dia masih bentuk cream jadi sorry that I have to say oil controlnya sangat kurang, karena by the mid if the day mukaku minyakan semua sampe, kan aku pake kacamata yah, melorot mulu kacamatanya hahaha kegiatan ku ga berat secara cuman dirumah doang. Same thing with the Night cream, pagi-pagi bangun muka rasanya beraaat banget, karena berminyak sekali.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

~ Where to buy? ~

langsung klik ada disini. Lengkap ada di Shopee yah

Harganya IDR 75.00 per produk

Multimasking – Featuring Plant apothecary and Elde

by Lina Clémence May 30, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

The festive season, wonderful as it is, can really take a toll on your skin. As someone who doesn’t usually drink, that prosecco on Christmas day has been awful for my skin. Dry flaky patches and a little bit dull looking, not a great look.
When it comes to skincare one of the best quick fixes available is a facemask. The beauty of facemasks is that they can be tailored to what your skin needs at the time. I sometimes like to do a couple of different masks in one day, or target different areas of the skin with different formulas.

Today I have two facemasks to show you that have been getting a lot of use and that are perfect for a quick pick me up:

Elde Enzyme Treatment – This treatment uses fruit enzymes to gently buff the skin making it brighter and softer in a single application. On the skin it has a similar effect to the Oskia Renaissance mask*, although admittedly the Oskia definitely has the edge on Elde in terms of how pleasurable it is to use. I find Elde products very effective, but very functional in their packaging and feel of the products, this Scandinavian brand is fragrance free and good for sensitive skin. The mask also contains salicylic acid to help with breakouts and allantoin to soothe the skin, making it a really good all round treatment. You have to massage the formula in to the face to activate the ingredients and I like to leave on for around ten minutes, making it a good one for when you are short on time.

Plant apothecary Matcha antioxidant mask* – Such a wonderful, soothing and balancing mask. Perfect for skin that is a bit out of sorts. The base of White Kaolin makes it perfect for even sensitive skin types, I have talked before about my preference for white or pink clay for my skin type as others such as Bentonite can be far too harsh. It also contains matcha powder, which gives it a gorgeous green colour and is packed full of antioxidants.

You can add a variety of hydrosols or face oils to this mix, as it contains three simple but effective ingredients clay, matcha and chamomile it lends itself well to customisation. As it is a powder mask, you simply mix up each batch fresh and use immediately.

What facemasks are you using to rescue your skin this festive season?

Powered by the planet: Four products from Herbivore Botanicals you need to try

by Lina Clémence May 30, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

I’ve been a real wellness kick lately.  Although I’ve always been one to workout a lot (I do some form of exercise five days a week and move everyday), I’ve been really focusing on nutrition and consuming and using better-for-you products.  This comes to skincare too.

Although I do love so many skincare brands, I have been leaning towards more natural products.  One brand that I’ve been intrigued about for a while is Herbivore Botanicals. Herbivore, which started in Seattle in 2011, has skincare products with an emphasis on natural, high-quality ingredients.  Their items are free of synthetic ingredients, including dyes, fragrances, and parabens. They also package them in glass and paper, using recycled and recyclable plastic only when necessary.

The thing that drew me to Herbivore initially was it’s super aesthetic packaging, which features glass bottles and simple labels. They have the kind of products that you want to display since they are simple, but oh so aesthetic. I recently got some items sent to me from the brand and couldn’t want to try them out. Their line ranges from serums to eye creams, moisturizers, masks, and more.

Curious on what to try? Then keep reading…

Herbivore Botanicals Blue Tansy Resurfacing Clarity Mask

Blue Tansy Resurfacing Clarity Mask

Looking for a product to help with large pores? Then you’ll like the Blue Tansy Resurfacing Clay Mask (C$66). This natural mask gently clarifies skin with BHAs and white willow bark, fruit enzymes, as well as aloe and blue tansy essential oil to help with the appearance of redness and irritation.

I actually had never heard of blue tansy before but it’s a natural source of azulene, which in addition to giving the mask its blue colour, it helps to also soothe the appearance of redness and irritation.

This mask is best suited for oily to blemish-prone skin, and if you have more sensitive skin then I would recommend a spot test first to make sure you don’t get irritated.  This mask helps wth enlarged pores and blemish-prone skin, uneven skin texture, oily or combination skin, and dullness.

Apply the product to your skin and then leave on for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing off. Use it a couple times a week for the best results.

Herbivore Botanicals Super Nova 5% Vitamin C + Caffeine Brightening Eye Cream

Super Nova 5% Vitamin C + Caffeine Brightening Eye Cream

Do you suffer from dark circles or dull underlies? Then you’ll love the Super Nova 5% Vitamin C + Caffeine Brightening Eye Cream (C$63). This eye cream is great for dark circles, puffiness, and dryness.

The formula contains THD vitamin C, which is a highly efficacious form of vitamin C, as well as turmeric and caffeine to wake up the eye area.  Apply this eye cream in the morning to instantly wake up the eyes and depuff them, while also brightening the look of dark circles in seven days.

Although this is mainly for daytime use (because of the vitamin C and caffeine), you can use it at night as well.

Herbivore Botanicals Emerald Hemp Seed and Adaptogens Deep Moisture Glow Oil and Moon Fruit Serum

Emerald Hemp Seed and Adaptogens Deep Moisture Glow Oil

Looking for moisturized skin that glows? Then you’ll love the Emerald Hemp Seed and Adaptogens Deep Moisture Glow Oil (C$66). This serum gives skin intense moisture and a natural-looking glow.

Suitable for all skin types, this serum can be applied morning and night, and targets dryness and dullness to reveal glowing skin. The formula contains a blend of omega-fatty-acid-rich hemp seed oil, which also soothes skin, as well as adaptogens like shiitake mushroom and ashwagandha root to protect skin against environmental stressors.  It also has cannabis in it, which will help calm skin.

Moon Fruit 1% Bakuchiol + Peptides Retinol Alternative Serum

Love retinol but looking for a natural version? Then you’ll love the Moon Fruit 1% Bakuchiol + Peptides Retinol Alternative Serum (C$82).

This plant-based retinol-alternative serum helps treat signs of aging thanks to the one per cent bakuchiol and plant peptides. Bakuchiol is an isolated extract from the babchi plant that mimics the smoothing and firming benefits of retinol. It also contains plant peptides to visibly tighten skin, as well as a blend of super fruits that contain vitamins C, E, B5, and antioxidants, amino and fatty acids that firm skin.

This nighttime serum targets fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness, and dryness. The great thing about bakuchiol is that it’s non-irritating, unlike retinol, which when applied too much can give you irritation, dryness, and redness. This serum contains 100 per cent plant-based ingredients promising to gently give you the anti-aging benefits you’re looking for without any issues or irritation. It’s also pregnancy safe.

Herbivore Botanicals products

Herbivore has a ton of other skincare products available as well and I can tell you already that with such a small taste of the brand I’ve had so far, I will definitely be looking into trying out more items. Not only is the packaging so cute, but I love the fact that it’s a plant-powered skincare line that is good for you and the planet.

Have you tried any items from Herbivore Botanicals?

SWALEDALE CHATEAUBRIAND & A ROASTED ROOT SALAD. | Barely There Beauty

by Lina Clémence May 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Everything about this dish is delicious. Simultaneously fresh but moreish, light but substantial. At it’s heart I’m featuring chateaubriand from Swaledale Butchers and alongside it, my most favourite of salads.

We really like to support smaller businesses where we can, especially over large supermarket chains and I love that butchers and other artisan food producers are branching out and providing the means to purchase their produce nationwide.

Swaledale kindly offered me the opportunity to try their wares, a chance
at which I jumped. Yorkshire-based, top-to-tail butchery from animals
reared on small farms in the Dales, they’ve a wide range from prime cuts
to offal and bones. Choosing lesser known breeds and fresh over frozen, they also curate boxes should you like to try a selection – I have my eyes on this one.

I plumped
for their chateaubriand this time – pan fried, lots of butter, then
roasted whole, sliced thin, medium rare, such a treat.

Vegetarians and vegans alike avert your eyes momentarily as I share this beautiful hunk of boeuf.

Ingredients

The beef:
700g chateaubriand
A couple of sprigs of rosemary
Drizzle of olive oil
Knob of butter
A couple of crushed garlic cloves in skins
Salt & pepper

The salad:
150g washed rocket
300g carrots, peeled & chopped
2 large, or 3 small, beetroot, peeled & cut into wedges
2 good handfuls of pecans
2 tbsps light brown sugar
Chilli flakes
Salt & pepper

The dressing:
Juice of 2 lemons
A scant tsp of mustard
1 finely crushed garlic clove
Chopped rosemary
60ml olive oil
Salt & pepper

Method

Preheat an oven to 180C. Toss the beets and carrots in olive oil, salt and pepper. Roast for 35-40 minutes until toasty and tender.

Meanwhile add all of the viniagrette ingredients into a jar and shake well until combined.

In a dry pan over a medium heat toast the nuts until fragrant, before
adding the sugar, lots of black pepper and a pinch of salt and chilli
flakes. Once mostly melted, remove onto a sheet of parchment to cool (I
advise making more than stated here as they’re a moreish snack).

For the beef, I followed Swaledale’s cooking instructions:

Remove the chateaubriand from the fridge ahead of time to come up to room temp.

Season a board well with salt and pepper, roll the meat around to season all sides evenly.

Preheat an oven to 165C.

Sear the meat in a little olive oil over a high heat, quickly brown on all sides.

Turn down the heat and add butter, rosemary sprigs and garlic. Once the butter begins to foam, baste the meat.

Transfer the pan to the oven and roast for 4 minutes. Flip over the steak, baste and roast for another 4 minutes.

Remove the chateaubriand from the oven to a plate/tray and tip over the
hot butter/juices. Tent with foil and allow to rest for 15 minutes.

Once the vegetables are cooked, remove from the oven and pour over the
viniagrette (everything goes a beautiful shade of cerise thanks to the
beets).

In a large mixing bowl, add the dressed roasted roots, rocket and pecans, toss and take to the table.

Once rested, slice the chateaubriand against the grain and serve.

Chateaubriand-roasted-vegetable-salad

I must note that the beef was delicious. Delightfully, truly tender with a smooth, rounded, beefy flavour.

Thank you to Swaledale for enabling this delicious dinner.

xx

Braided Updo with Baby-Girl~ yes, I’m still fixing my hair every day!

by Lina Clémence May 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Hi friends!

It has been much too long since I posted on my blog, but as you can see I have been…busy 🙂  Baby Girl is growing fast and oh-so-sweet!  Thankfully I still have time most days to fix my hair, and yesterday we managed to take some mommy-and-baby photos that also include some hairstyle shots.  This is one of my go-to styles these days, a small French braid where a headband would go, brought down into a side braided bun.  Hopefully I can post more hairstyle pictures on my blog in the weeks and months ahead, thank you so much for continuing to follow!  I wanted to let you know that this is not yet a dead page 🙂

I hope you are staying happy and healthy these days, and that you too have a sweet quarantine buddy <3
