Comparing All Three Ship Classes – Planning the Magic

by Lina Clémence May 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Exploring Disney Cruise Line: Comparing All Three Ship Classes

I’ve had the pleasure of sailing on all three classes of Disney Cruise Line ships, and I’m excited to share my honest feedback! As a devoted Disney enthusiast, Disney Cruise Line holds a special place in my heart. It’s my favorite cruise line for a reason: it’s more “all-inclusive” than many others, and no one does entertainment quite like Disney. That said, each class of ship offers unique experiences, with its own set of advantages and drawbacks. Let’s dive into the details!

The Magic Class: Magic and Wonder

The Magic and Wonder are sister ships with similar layouts but distinct theming and shows. While they are the smallest and oldest ships in the fleet, don’t let that discourage you. They’re still brimming with Disney magic! Here are some highlights and considerations:

Positives:

  • Incredible Shows: These ships have my favorite entertainment lineup of all three classes.
  • Spacious Adults-Only Areas: I particularly enjoyed the hot tubs in these areas.
  • Animator’s Palate: The interactive dining experience is especially enchanting on these ships.

Considerations:

  • Smaller Size: The ship’s size means there’s less to explore compared to larger vessels.
  • Food Options: While none of the food was bad, it was my least favorite compared to the other classes.

The Dream Class: Dream and Fantasy

The Dream was my introduction to Disney cruising, making it extra special to me. These mid-sized ships strike a balance between intimacy and spaciousness, and they’re ideal for families and Disney fans alike.

Positives:

  • Memorable Shows: “The Golden Mickeys” was a standout for me.
  • Interactive Fun: The detective game onboard is a fantastic way to spend a day at sea.
  • Balanced Size: The Dream and Fantasy feel just right in terms of scale—not too big, not too small.

Considerations:

  • Adults-Only Areas: These felt lacking compared to other classes. The hot tub space was limited, and the pool area was small and chilly.
  • Restaurant Theming: Aside from Animator’s Palate, the restaurants didn’t offer much in terms of immersive decor or entertainment.

The Triton Class: Treasure,Wish, & Destiny

I had the incredible opportunity to experience a preview cruise on the Treasure, and it exceeded my expectations! As the newest and largest ships in the Disney fleet, the Treasure and Wish set a new standard for cruising magic.

Positives:

  • Stunning Decor: The detailed theming and artwork throughout the ship are breathtaking.
  • Exceptional Food: From the main dining rooms to the pool deck, the culinary offerings were the best of all three classes.
  • Adults-Only Infinity Pool: This area was spacious and beautifully designed, making it a highlight for relaxation.
  • Coco-Themed Dining Experience: The food and accompanying musical show were deeply moving and memorable.

Considerations:

  • Limited Show Variety: The Treasure currently offers only two full productions—“Moana” (which is spectacular) and “Beauty and the Beast” (a bit overplayed for me).
  • Exclusively Seven-Night Sailings: While the longer sailings are a treat, the limited show options felt like a missed opportunity.

My Personal Rankings

While each ship class has its own charm, here’s how I rank them overall and in specific categories:

  • Overall: Treasure, Dream, Magic
  • Rooms: Treasure, Magic/Dream (tie)
  • Food: Treasure, Dream, Magic
  • Kids’ Clubs: Treasure, Dream, Magic
  • Shows: Magic, Dream, Treasure
  • Shopping: Treasure, Magic, Dream
  • Adults-Only Areas: Magic, Treasure, Dream
  • Bars/Lounges: Treasure, Dream, Magic
  • Service: Magic, Dream, Treasure

Final Thoughts

These rankings reflect my personal opinions and preferences, and every ship in the Disney fleet has something magical to offer. Ultimately, the best ship for you will depend on your priorities, whether that’s the itinerary, onboard amenities, or show offerings.

If you haven’t sailed with Disney Cruise Line yet, I’d love to help you plan your dream vacation. No matter which ship you choose, you’re guaranteed an unforgettable experience! What’s your favorite Disney ship? Let me know in the comments or reach out to start planning your next adventure!

10 signs it’s time to see an Acne Expert

by Lina Clémence May 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

This is when it’s time to take the power back from the pimples.

It’s time to seek professional help for acne when all of the over-the-counter options aren’t working, your acne is consistent and painful, and you’re suffering from it’s effect on your self-confidence, social life and quality of life. When none of the options you have access to are not working for you, it’s time to seek professional help to get a handle on your situation and throw your skin and self-esteem a major life-line.

About Face Aesthetics was created in Philadelphia in 2011 primarily to help our acne patients, and we are more excited than ever about this constant quest due to the new advancements and offerings available for acne treatment.

  1. The Sephora, pharmacy, non-prescription options haven’t stopped the break-outs.

If you’ve tried multiple over-the-counter products and your acne persists or worsens, it’s a sign that you may need more specialized care.

  2. Your breakouts are painful and severe.

Deep, cystic acne or nodules can be especially painful, and harder to eradicate. To clear current acne, prevent future breakouts and erase signs of breakouts, you’ll get the most efficient, safe, and specialized advice from an expert.

  3. Acne is leaving scars or dark marks.

The best kind of acne scar is the one that never happens. Acne scarring can manifest in multiple ways all by itself, or due to the improper care of it. Acne scarring that presents as dark spots and pigmented areas are the preferable form of scarring because there are powerful treatment options to clear these, but textural scarring like ice-pick scars or dimpled-skin can be impossible to treat without requiring surgery. If you notice that your breakouts are leaving textural, divot-like scarring you should seek outside advice as soon as you can to prevent the accumulation of these hard-to-clear acne scars.

  4. Acne is majorly affecting your self-esteem and confidence.

It used to be thought that there was a correlation between Accutane (a popular acne-eradicating prescription medication) and suicide. From a 20-foot view, it could be speculated that if a disproportionate amount of Accutane users were suicidal, the causation had to be Accutane. With more time, study and insight however, it is now understaood that the Accutane wasn’t causing these severe depressive thoughts, it was the acne itself (for which the Accutane was being used to treat). Some studies show that acne can have such an impact on a person’s self-esteem that as much as 56% of acne sufferers can develop depressive and suicidical ideation. We get it, and we are thrilled at every chance we get to help someone overcome their acne struggles. If your breakouts are causing massive. negative impact on your life, please reach out for help.

  5. Unusual breakouts patterns.

If you notice that your acne is spreading to unusual areas like armpits, groin, or thighs, it could indicate a different type of acne or an underlying health-issue that requires professional diagnosis.

  6. You’ve had acne for years.

If you’ve had acne for an extended period without significant improvement, and you’re well past the typical “teenage acne” stage, it’s time to seek professional advice to determine the best treatment plan.

  7. Your parents had acne.

Acne can be genetic, and if you know from the start that you are predisposed to this skin condition and can get a gauge of what your acne timeline and experience may be like, you owe it to yourself to take the reigns back from the breakouts and take advantage of the clear-skin options and advances that exist now, which were never even an option for your parents.

  8. You started taking a medication and now have breakouts:

Certain medications can trigger or worsen acne, so it’s important to discuss this with a professional to find appropriate treatment options. Your provider can help you determine if there are different medicines to take that won’t cause the same side-effects or responses, and/or if there are recommended ways to treat the resulting breakouts.

  9. Your pimples often get infected.

If you notice that your pimples are usually swollen, oozing, painful, and an angry shade of red, it’s a good indication that you have a mini-infection brewing inside the pore which can take longer to resolve, cause discomfort, and make scarring more likely. If this is something that happens regularly, please talk to an expert to learn your best options to prevent these situations from occuring.

  10. Your pimples are annoyingly itchy.

While occasional itching is normal, chronically itchy acne can be a sign of an underlying skin condition, and a skin-professional can help diagnose and treat it.

If any of these items ring true for you, please reach out to About Face Aesthetics in Philadelphia for your acne treatments. We will be thrilled to help you.
(Depending on your particular situation, we are happy to guide you to the right specialist.) You can schedule an appointment here, or you can fill out our online Treatment Builder here to get an idea of what might be recommended for you.

An eco printed dress fit for an elven queen – A Curious Fancy

by Lina Clémence May 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Wearing ✶ Eco printed linen dress by Gillian Smellie {Similar in a different print here} ✶ Hair crown from Eclectic Eccentricity 8 years ago ✶ Wide Welly Co. wellies

✶ Get 15% off your purchase from Gillian’s online shop or in person at any of her pop up shops with my code CF15 ✶

Who else is watching the middle earth fanfic also known as The Rings of Power? I’m supplementing my viewing with a re-read of The Book of Lost Tales (Vol. 1) and it’s fascinating to revisit Tolkien’s earliest penned tales from over a century ago alongside the latest retelling fanfic. Elvish lore was very much on my mind when I received this breathtaking eco printed dress by Gillian Smellie, and it immediately transported me to the woodlands of Doriath, the hidden city of Gondolin and the shade of the mallorns of Lorien. For this is truly a dress fit for an elven queen!

Some collaborations unfold in the most serendipitious way. I met Gillian at her stall at the Brancepeth Castle craft fair back in the summer and instantly fell in love with her magical leaf prints. The next day when I posted some photos from the fair on my Instagram story, I tagged Gillian in one of them and to my surprise and delight I found an email from her in my inbox the next morning asking me if I’d like to style any of her pieces! Of course I jumped at the chance.

Gillian Smellie is a textile artist based in County Durham who uses locally foraged leaves to create unique and magical prints on preloved garments. You can read more about her dyeing process on her website here. Sustainable and eco friendly fashion is at the heart of her work and the reason she mostly prints on preloved and vintage garments. In my conversations with her, Gillian expressed her keen interest in expanding the size range of the garments she prints on. As pre loved garments in larger sizes that are also suitable for eco printing are rare, Gillian has been sourcing plus size linen dresses and tops from a manufacturer in Italy to expand the size range of her products. The dress I’m wearing is one of these.

At the craft fair, I was very taken by a pair of dungarees with a striking fern print that was sadly too small for me, so I requested Gillian to print my dress with all the ferns! As luck would have it though, ferns have been very low in tannin this season and produced rather faint prints, so Gillian redid the dress with sumac and rose petals and the results exceeded all my expectations. There are a few garments in my wardrobe that I’d classify as wearable art, and this dress is one of them. Despite being a huge Tolkien nerd for more than 2 decades now, I’ve never felt particularly inclined to dress up as a hobbit or elf…until I put on this dress and was enveloped in it’s ethereal beauty. The linen is also buttery soft and has a lovely weight to it. I’m wearing a size large and it’s very roomy and oversized on me (I’m currently a UK18-20) For sizing reference, I feel this dress is more of a UK 22-24.

You can shop all of Gillian’s available products at her online shop here. Gillian also does a lot of pop ups and fairs in and around the north east of England, and you can see her schedule for upcoming shows here. As she has recently started expanding her range of plus size garments, it’s worth dropping her a message if you want to buy one of her creations but can’t find your size in the webshop. Gillian can also print on any suitable garment from your own wardrobe – here’s what she told me about custom printing: “Yes I do print to order. I cannot guarantee the outcome but I can aim for a specific look/use specific leaves etc.  I’m not doing any more bespoke before Christmas but happy to take post Christmas orders.” So if you’d love to have a piece of wearable art in your wardrobe but can’t find your size in the online shop, get in touch with Gillian for a custom printed garment just like my sumac and rose elven dress!

Hotel Norman Paris – Bisous Natasha

by Lina Clémence May 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Just off the Champs Elysee, on 9 Rue Balzac, you will find Hotel Norman Paris.  Architect and interior designer Thomas Vidalenc is behind the concept of this hotel, whose lobby and bar area are reminiscent of a private member’s club. The decor is very eclectic, with furniture that could be from the 60s but mixed in with modern, futuristic pieces.

I had the pleasure of staying in The Terrace Suite, located on the top floor of the hotel. It is a two-story suite, with a living room, bathroom and bedroom on the bottom floor and an 11 square meter terrace with seating on the top floor. The suite sleeps up to 3 guests, if you request an extra bed, which will be placed in the separate living room.

The Spa by Omnisens, located in the lower ground floor of the hotel, offers both face and body treatments. There is a small and cozy gym area to workout in but the plunge pool and sauna are the highlight of the spa. Even if you are not staying at the hotel, you have the opportunity to book a treatment at the spa.

What is the value of certification labels? Is direct trade really the best option? Looking at Essential Oils and Simply Earth

by Lina Clémence May 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Hey folks! I am back on the bloggie, this time to chat about choices businesses have to make with ethical labeling, product sourcing / supply chain,  and profits in the essential oil businesses. This is no defense thesis, but you may learn something new or have an opinion to share. To begin with. Today’s post was brought about by the opportunity to try out a new brand of essential oils (Simply Earth). You may be an essential oil user or not. I was not until I moved to Guatemala and wanted a natural, chemical-free bug repellent. One of my students’ parents in Guatemala actually sells essential oils out there too!

– – –

In a time where being a socially conscious business is hip and to a certain degree expected, it is important to not only understand the players, but the game, when we are making choices. Why? Because companies may obtain certain certifications or slap fancy labels on their website or products which may actually be misleading. You, as the consumer, should be aware of what that pretty label is actually worth, especially if you are trying your best to be an informed consumer. There are many certifications including Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance Certification and Equal Exchange to name a few of the popular ones (read more here). However, for multiple certifications, the certification process is out of budget, and for some, only a small percentage of the product’s materials has to follow the labeling standard to be certified. Recently in the makeup industry, we see the difficulties of following the production chain with how easy it is for the mineral mica to secretly involve child labor then be sold to a main supplier in a neighboring town who may in fact have an ethical certification. This is then sold to the producer of the sparkly lip gloss or eye shadow which you use. It is so easy to not be aware of all that occurs in the supply chain. The same thing happens with palm oil, which you can find in anything from makeup to ice cream to soap to shampoo! While I was studying for my Master’s degree, I learned a lot about supply chains. This is all to say that I view ethical certifications as better than nothing, but I do prefer direct trade. When dealing with companies which are direct trade, weather they are certified or not, it is really up to the consumer to believe what they see based on information provided to the consumer, since it is not an option to visit every supply chain supplier for every single product which you wish to consume. Imagine that!

I have looked into a few essential oils businesses and pleasingly see how multiple work directly with farmers in developing countries across the world. In cutting out the middle man, a buyer (like Simply Earth) is allowed to purchase the raw material from the seller (farmer) and the seller can name their price. There are actually essential oil farmers not too far from where I live in Guatemala. Some work with middle man and some work directly with companies. Many times a middle man will push a seller to lower his price so that the middleman can take a cut for the coordination work involved in the transaction. You can see this in everyday life too! So, when companies like Simply Earth work directly with the farmer, the majority of the time, it implies that the farmers’ work is more valued economically and socially. Moving forward to the post-production side of things, once a brand has their finished product, it is their choice to decide how to go about administration, packaging and profit distribution.

Simply Earth with their farmers in Haiti (Simply Earth 2019).

Companies like Simply Earth, and even food companies like Newman’s Own, have decided to not only go ecofriendly with packaging, but have decided to go a step beyond and give profits to help further a social cause. In the case of Simply Earth, they donate 13% of their profits to help end human trafficking! Human trafficking (labor trafficking, debt bondage and sex trafficking) is a real-life problem which takes freedom, innocence and joy from millions of people every year! In college, I was very involved with a few anti human trafficking groups and to bringing down a multi-billion dollar industry requires a lot of funds to help raise awareness, rescue victims and provide rehabilitation to survivors. If you want to get involved in anti-human trafficking efforts check out this link. This is all to say that I am so pleased with the Simply Earth business model. They not only take into consideration production, but they area also conscious with their packaging and profit choices. Way to go!

As far as their essential oils. I am no essential oils know-it all. I can tell you that I had a lot of fun whipping up a few mixtures and that I thought that lavender oil was the best in the world because of it’s anti-mosquito qualities, however, I am now a fur tree fan because of it’s fatigue and pain relieving and deodorizing qualities. The great thing is that this month’s Kid themed box came with both, so I am one happy camper! I was given a bonus box which came with a almond and coconut carrier oils, along with coconut oil and a bunch of glass bottles (diffusers and roll-ons). I am typically not a perfume smell person because strong smells usually give me a headache. But I think that in small portions I am a fan of these, because they smell like a fruit, a tree and a flower, which are all things found in nature! I also looked up the pros and cons of essential oils. One concern with the use of essential oils is that they cause free radicals. Free radicals are necessary for the body but are also found in fried foods and are created by excess alcohol and smoking and stress (anyone have stress in their life?). After reading more, I realized that, like anything, excess is harmful and that essential oils are an alternative to man-invented chemical lotions, bug repellents and detergents which also cause cancer. If I had to choose between the two, I would choose the choice closest to what God created for us. After all, if you are reading this, you are interested in a lifestyle that brings us back to the more natural and God-glorifying way of life. 🙂

Let me know what you think about certifications, supply chain and essential oils! This was very interesting for me to write and I would love to hear your opinion!

Have a blessed rest of your week,

Christine

These 5 Moisturizing Face Products Have Been Amazing For My Skin

by Lina Clémence May 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

I am an avid lover of all things skincare related and I’m always trying new products to see what works best for my combination skin. Lately, I’ve been all about providing the maximum amount of moisture to my skin and throughout this process, I’ve discovered some amazing products that have workes wonders on my skin, and I just had to share!

Here are 5 face products that are working wonders on my skin!

1. Mukama Botanica High Vibe Face Mist

mukama-botanica-high-vibe-face-mist-tangerine-sandalwood-product-review-black-yoga-teacher-busy-yoga-mom-blog

I was gifted this skin mist and it took me a while to get it into my skincare rotation and that is one of my biggest regrets! It has been such a treat for my skin. It gives me softness and my skin feels supple after using it. I thought that I would use it as a facial mist when practicing yoga or wellness activity, but it has become my go-to facial toner in my morning and evening skincare routines.

The tangerine and sandalwood that the spray is made from have amazing benefits for the skin. Sandalwood has anti-inflammatory properties to help de-puff the skin, and it acts as astringent (which is why I usually spray it every morning as step 2 of my skin care routine) and it also helps with clearing blackheads and acne. The tangerine contains anti-oxidants that fight free radicals and is also a source of Vitamin C. Overall, this facial mist has so many benefits!

Although, I haven’t been out and about teaching in-person classes, I recently had a yoga content shoot and brought my high vibration spray with me. It came in so clutch as a refresher for my skin between sets. This product really is a multi- benefit skincare must-have and I 100% recommend it.

2. Dermalogica Biolumin-C Eye Serum

product-review-dermalogica-biolumin-c-eye-serum-dark-skin-care-tips-black-busy-yoga-mom

This. Vitamin C. Serum. Is. The. Truth! I’m admittedly a woman who wear many hats, so sleep deprivation is sometimes unavoidable, especially when balancing toddler mom life a full-time career and entrepreneurship.

Dermalogica has always been one of my go-to brands for skincare. It’s also
what my esthetician uses, so I’m no stranger to the amazing benefits and
results these products have.

When I got my hands on this Vitamin C eye serum, I had heard tons of buzz
from beauty bloggers galore screaming its glory from the mountaintops, so I knew I had to experience it for myself. It is a very lightweight eye serum with Vitamin C complex that helps brighten and visibly firm the skin around the eye area.

And the verdict is… IT’S LIT! My dark circles are gone and I love the
nourishment and soothing formulation of this serum… it’s a winner.

3. Murad Resurgence Rapid Collagen Infusion

murad-resurgence-rapid-collagen-infusion-beauty-product-review-dark-skin-care-black-yoga-mom

I received this moisturizer in a FabFitFun box and mmmm mmmm mmmm! It is SO GOOD! I have been a fan of adding collagen to my smoothies, coffee and tea for a couple of years because of the great health benefits that it has for joints, hair, skin and nails. It is also a great way to naturally get an energy boost.

So, I was immediately intrigued by this product and after doing some
research, (just to make sure it was a good fit to incorporate it into my regimen) and learning that is all about helping with skin’s elasticity so much so that they promote that it can reduce wrinkles and fine lines in as little as two hours, I was SOLD.

Wrinkles aren’t a huge concern of mine at the moment, but prevention is key and I do have laugh lines and minimal crow’s feet that I’ve noticed are more minimal since using this product

3. HydropPeptide Moisture Reset Phytonutrient Facial Oil

hydropeptide-moisture-reset-phytonutrient-facial-oil-skin-care-product-review-skin-care-black-woman-dark-skin-yoga-mom

I absolutely love slathering my skin with a luscious facial oil and this one has been the best thing to happen to my skin a long time.

This nourishing, medium weight oil is an anti-oxidant rich blend of a dozen oils and is the perfect consistency, because it’s not super-thick or watery. It has juicy ingredients like avocado and lavender oilthat help improve the skin’s natural lipid barrier.

I use it in the morning and at night before bed by dispensing 3-4 drops onto my fingertips and gently rubbing and patting it into my skin. It leaves my face feeling moisturized and soft.

5. Amethyst Face Roller

amethyst-face-roller-skin-care-chakra-zulu-crystals-black-busy-yoga-mom

I recently shared how using my facial roller on my skin has been great for
my mental health because I use it as a mindfulness ritual.
I treat my skincare routine as a self-care ritual, and this beautiful Amethyst
facial roller is my go-to!

Amethyst is known as the “all-healer” and is known to counteract
negative energies and I’m pretty sure that’s why it feels so amazing to run it
over my skin. Plus facial rolling is great for draining your lymph nodes and stimulating blood circulation, so using a beautiful tool made from one of my favorite crystals is the icing on the cake.

Get Yours!: Chakra Zulu

What are your go-to skin care products these days?

xo,

SkinCeuticals Has the Best Vitamin C Serum—But It’s Not the Only One

by Lina Clémence May 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Even more compelling is that many dermatologists use it in their own routines. Among them is Toronto-based board-certified dermatologist Geeta Yadav, MD, who noted that despite trying different serums, nothing beats this. “I really dig the effect of SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic because of the antioxidant and keratolytic benefits of vitamin C and ferulic acid,” she says. As for Shereene Idriss, MD, a New York City board-certified dermatologist specializing in facial aesthetics and rejuvenation, she’s seen the benefits firsthand. “It’s my personal go-to because it contains a potent triple combination of antioxidants, including vitamins C, E, and ferulic acid,” she says. “This simple step helps dramatically with the improvement of fine lines, skin firmness, and overall brightening.”

While the patent on C E Ferulic’s ingredient blend has expired—meaning many brands can now attempt to recreate this powerful combination—keep in mind that simply copying the blend doesn’t necessarily make it as effective. “Somebody can put in vitamin C, not stabilize it, put in the vitamin E and ferulic acid, then say it’s the same as SkinCeuticals,” cosmetic chemist Perry Romanowski previously explained. Bottom line: This serum simply delivers results that stand up to the hype, and only requires a few drops per use—making the steep price tag more of a long-term investment in your skin than a splurge.

“I’ve been blending four drops of this antioxidant serum on my bare skin (under sunscreen, of course) every morning for about a decade. Every time I stray, my hyperpigmentation rises up to let me know I made a grave mistake.”

  • Key ingredients: vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid, 15%), vitamin E (1%), ferulic acid (0.5%)
  • Skin type it’s best for: mature skin, those with discoloration
  • Fragrance-free: yes
  • Size: 1 fluid ounce

Best for Sensitive Skin: Dr. Loretta Repair Serum

Shanna Shipin applying the Dr. Loretta Repair Serum

Why it’s worth it: Dr. Loretta’s Repair Serum is supercharged with Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (THDA), a super-stable, oil-soluble version of vitamin C that penetrates deep into the epidermis to moisturize, brighten, and minimize free-radical damage caused by UVA and UVB rays and pollution—without the irritation that can arise in those with sensitive skin. That’s because it’s very stable and easily absorbed by skin. “Unlike L-ascorbic acid, which is water-soluble and requires a low pH to remain stable, THDA is pH-independent,” Jenny Liu, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Minneapolis and assistant professor at the University of Minnesota, previously shared with Allure. “This makes it less irritating and suitable for sensitive skin, as it bypasses the need for an acidic environment, which can sometimes cause redness or stinging.” (L-ascorbic acid is the pure form of vitamin C.)

In addition to the THDA, lilac stem cells in this formula also help fight free radicals and curb excess oil production without drying out skin, while two types of marine algae increase hydration and support the skin’s natural collagen production.

In our testing, we found that the texture of this serum is a standout: It’s lightweight, comfortable, and absorbs instantly without leaving behind any stickiness or residue. There’s no tacky finish, no lingering scent, and most importantly, no irritation or redness, even on sensitive or eczema-prone skin. Our tester, who struggles with chronically dehydrated skin, noted that it didn’t trigger any flaking or dryness (read more on that below!) The only caveat? You may need a full pump to cover your face, and with a smaller bottle, that means every drop really counts.

“For the longest time, I steered clear of vitamin c serums—partially at the behest of my dermatologist, who was concerned that my facial eczema would flare up miserably if I used a corrective serum. It wasn’t until I realized what allergens were causing my flare-ups that I decided to go in on a vitamin C, and I found the perfect one for my me in Dr. Loretta’s Anti-Aging Repair Serum. I’ve used it for a few months, and I believe it’s helped address my biggest concerns of uneven skin tone (caused by years of relentless sun exposure in Southern California) and rough texture (caused by hormonal acne).”

  • Key ingredients: vitamin C (Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, 3%), lilac stem cells, marine algae extracts (Undaria pinnatifida and Alaria esculenta)
  • Skin type it’s best for: mature skin, oily skin, combination skin
  • Fragrance-free: yes
  • Size: 1 fluid ounce

Best for Dark Spots: Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster

Paula’s Choice

C15 Super Booster

Angela Trakoshis applying Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster

Shannon Murray

Why it’s worth it: The beauty of Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster is that you can use it as a standalone serum in your skin-care routine or you can mix it into your favorite masks, sunscreens, and moisturizers for an added touch of brightening antioxidants. This lightweight serum is powered by 15% vitamin C, vitamin E, and ferulic acid to brighten, firm, and correct uneven skin tones. Bonus: When we tested it, it played nicely with other active ingredients in our regimen.

Our tester is on a strict tretinon journey, so she’s super selective when it comes to make products or ingredients she mixes into her routine. She applies this vitamin C on the days when she’s not using her tretinoin and reports that works like a charm both at night and under makeup and sunscreen. There’s no pilling or redness in sight. Plus, it smells like fresh oranges.

“I love this because it’s a no-B.S. formula. It delivers exactly what it promises without any unnecessary frills or filler ingredients. The lightweight texture makes it easy to layer into in routine, whether morning or night. I apply just a few drops a day, and I can see a real glow without any irritation. Packed with 15% vitamin C, the formula helps brighten dull skin and even out tone over time. I also appreciate that it doesn’t have that sticky or greasy finish some vitamin C serums leave behind. It’s one of the few products I consistently reach for because it just works.”

  • Key ingredients: vitamin C (ascorbic acid, 15%), vitamin E, ferulic acid, ergothioneine (amino acid)
  • Skin type it’s best for: dry to oily skin, combination skin
  • Fragrance-free: yes
  • Size: 0.67 fluid ounces

Best for Dry Skin: Naturium Vitamin C Complex Serum

Naturium

Vitamin C Complex Serum

Sarah Han applying the Naturium Vitamin C Complex Serum

Shannon Murray

Why it’s worth it: Naturium’s Vitamin C Complex Serum takes your skin to a more radiant level each time you use it. Its combination of vitamin C and hyaluronic acid intensively hydrates skin, revealing a bouncier texture, while the antioxidant evens tone and boosts radiance. To elevate the stability of vitamin C (as in, to prolong and enhance its brightening effects), the ingredient is tag-teamed with vitamin E. “Compounding vitamin C with another antioxidant [like vitamin E] helps preserve the stability and boost the effectiveness of the serum,” Michelle Henry, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, previously explained.

Tester feedback from commerce editor Sarah Han

“This has two different types of vitamin C—as in, double the brightening benefits. What I love about this serum is that it’s super lightweight and feels very liquidy, which I like. It doesn’t leave any weird residue or stickiness behind.”

  • Key ingredients: vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid, Kakadu plum), vitamin E, hyaluronic acid
  • Skin type it’s best for: dull skin, those with discoloration, dry skin
  • Fragrance-free: yes
  • Size: 1.0 fluid ounce

Best for Acne Scars: Revision Skincare C+ Correcting Complex 30%

Revision Skincare

C+ Correcting Complex 30%

Deanna Pai applying the Revision Skincare C+ Correcting Complex 30%

Why it’s worth it: Revision Skincare is a favorite of dermatologists we’ve talked to over the years. Tiffany Clay, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Atlanta, Georgia, told us that it’s her go-to vitamin C product because it contains a max-strength concentration of THDA, which, as we’ve mentioned, is a home-run for anyone prone to sensitivities.

Like other products on this list, dermatologists often use this themselves, with Chicago-based board-certified dermatologist Caroline Robinson, MD, using it for years. “I love that it’s formulated with 30% pure vitamin C and also contains patent-pending MelaPATH technology, making it one of the most advanced vitamin C products on the market,” she previously called out. MelaPATH technology, a proprietary skin-brightening mixture of antioxidants, also supposedly boosts the skin’s production of vitamins C and E.

Tester feedback from contributing editor Deanna Pai

“I’ve used a lot of vitamin C serums in my day, but this one has beaten out the competition: It comes in an airtight pump (no oxidation, thank you), doesn’t have any noticeable scent, and is easy to smooth onto skin before my moisturizer. It’s kind of everything I want in a skin-care product—effective and invisible. And after six weeks of using it, I’ve noticed a big difference in the hyperpigmentation on my face, which is a combination of generally uneven skin tone and dark spots from acne. My acne-prone skin looks overall brighter and calmer, and some specific spots have faded in a handful of weeks, which is a record for me.”

  • Key ingredients: vitamin C (THD ascorbate, 30%), sodium carboxymethyl beta-glucan, diglycosyl gallic acid
  • Skin type it’s best for: normal to oily skin types, combination skin, mature skin
  • Fragrance-free: yes
  • Size: 1 fluid ounce

Best for Sun Damage: Obagi Medical Professional-C Serum 20%

Obagi

Professional-C Vitamin C Serum

Sarah Kinonen applyin Obagi’s Medical Professional-C Serum 20%

Why it’s worth it: This high-performance serum is a favorite among our editors for a reason and a good one. It’s formulated with 20% L-ascorbic acid—the most bioavailable form of vitamin C—it helps visibly brighten the complexion, even skin tone, and reduce the appearance of fine lines overtime. The formula is also supported by ferulic acid which enhances the stability of vitamin C but also boosts its protective effects against environmental stressors like pollution and UV damage (but don’t forget, you still need to wear your sunscreen!)

“A little bit goes a long way, so I tend to just apply straight to skin from the dropper, which has a hook-like end to keep the liquid in (smart!). It would be the step before moisturizer and sunscreen every morning. I also really like Obagi over other serums because this one has no real scent—a feat in the world of vitamin C serums!”

  • Key ingredients: L-ascorbic acid, propylene glycol, ascorbyl glucoside, and phenoxyethanol
  • Skin type it’s best for: normal to oily skin types, combination skin, mature skin
  • Fragrance-free: No
  • Size: 0.42 ounce or 1 fluid ounce

More vitamin C serums we love:

Alastin Skincare

C-Radical Defense Antioxidant Serum

Why it’s worth it: In this formula, vitamin C is accompanied by the antioxidant-rich Physalis angulata plant and green tea extracts to minimize damage from environmental stressors (we’re looking at you, UV rays), refine skin texture, and even tone.

La Roche-Posay

10% Pure Vitamin C Face Serum

Why it’s worth it: La Roche-Posay is known for bottling top-grade formulas at reasonable price points, and this face serum is no exception. L-ascorbic acid refines skin texture while salicylic acid gently exfoliates clogged pores—making it ideal for those with oily skin.

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare

Vitamin C Lactic 15% Firm & Bright Serum

Why it’s worth it: A Best of Beauty Award winner, this serum combines vitamin C with lactic acid to not only brighten but also gently exfoliate and firm the skin. It’s ideal for anyone looking to tackle uneven tone and loss of elasticity without irritation.

Sunday Riley

Sunday Riley C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum

Why it’s worth it: This bestseller features a super stable form of vitamin C that sinks in easily and leaves skin looking fresh and radiant. It brightens, smooths, and adds a hit of hydration—basically, it’s a glow-boosting overachiever for tired, uneven skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does vitamin C do for the skin?

“Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that “interferes with pigment production and keeps inflammation at bay,” explains Joshua Zeichner, MD, the director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai’s Department of Dermatology in New York City. Not only that, but vitamin C also supports the production of collagen, an important protein in your body that supports your skin’s elasticity and firmness.

Vitamin C’s antioxidant properties also neutralize free radicals, molecules created by external factors like air pollution and sunlight, says Dr. Zeichner. Since free radicals speed up signs of aging, vitamin C helps address fine lines they cause, too. Think of it as the ideal daytime counterpart to the retinol or exfoliating acids you might use at night to smooth skin, speed up cellular turnover, and treat acne scars left over from breakouts.

Vitamin C can also inhibit your skin’s melanin production, which leads to discoloration like dark spots and hyperpigmentation, New York City-based board-certified dermatologist Patricia Wexler, MD, previously told Allure. Over time, she says, vitamin C can help prevent dark spots from forming in the first place so it looks glowy—in addition to evening out skin tone.

What to look for in vitamin C serums

Not all vitamin C serums are formulated equally—in fact, not even all forms of vitamin C are equal in effectiveness. Here are a few factors to consider when shopping:

Vitamin C comes in a nearly endless variety of forms, but ascorbic acid, also known as L-ascorbic acid, is the gold standard of vitamin C for its stability and efficacy. “Pure ascorbic acid has consistently been proven to be the most effective at penetrating the skin barrier,” says Dr. Wexler. Other dermatologist-approved forms of vitamin C you may come across in skin-care products include tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, and methylsilanol ascorbate.

Dr. Liu previously told Allure the average concentration of vitamin C in a skin-care formula is around 10% to 15%. Keep in mind that a higher concentration of vitamin C may lead to sensitivity, so sensitive skin types may want to stick to a lower percentage.

  • Antioxidants: You’ve probably noticed that vitamin C tends to be tag-teamed with two other antioxidants, vitamin E and ferulic acid, and there’s a reason for that. “Vitamin C effectiveness increases when combined with other antioxidants, such as vitamin E,” says Dr. Wexler. “Together, they can provide double protection against free-radical damage.”
  • Humectants: Hydrating ingredients known as humectants, such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and squalane, partner well with vitamin C to boost hydration levels and ease the sting of the active ingredient, especially if you’re using a potent, high-percentage (above 15%) formula.
  • Brightening ingredients: Niacinamide and tranexamic acid complement vitamin C in interfering with the pigment production process.
  • Peptides: If you’re seeking firmer skin, peptides (which act as messengers between skin cells) can also help supplement vitamin C’s ability to dial up collagen production.

When to use vitamin C serum

Like most actives, dermatologists recommend slowly incorporating vitamin C into your skin-care routine to avoid irritation. Start with a few drops every two days, and, if your skin seems to tolerate it, you can work your way up to every day. We suggest applying vitamin C serums before your moisturizer and sunscreen in the morning to benefit the most from the antioxidant’s free-radical fighting power. If your skin can tolerate it, and if you want an overnight collagen boost, you can also apply it in the evening.

I Tried BIAB Nails, the Manicure Dubbed “Armor For Your Nails”—With Photos

by Lina Clémence May 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Before getting BIAB nails, I was disillusioned with nail salons. Regular polish chipped the second I left the salon. Gel manicures always chip on me, plus they tend to tear off the top layers of my nails in the removal process (so acrylics were definitely out of the question). BIAB, however, was able to reel me back in after a six-month sabbatical of manicures.

BIAB is the abbreviation for Builder in a Bottle, a formula from nail-care brand The Gel Bottle. It’s risen to TikTok fame—not only for its unparalleled durability (the brand claims it lasts at least four weeks) but also for how it supports healthy nail growth. It started as a major nail trend in Europe, particularly in the U.K., and has since taken over tips stateside.

Curious about what BIAB nails were all about, I visited manicurist Julie Kandalec at her “Nail Artelier” in New York City to try it out. Kandalec has reached for BIAB for the last five years when working with her celebrity clients, like Pink and Jessica Chastain. Read on to learn more about the benefits of getting a BIAB manicure and my experience with it.

  • Anissa Campos is a nail artist based in Chicago.
  • Julie Kandalec is a New York City-based manicurist.
  • Mona Gohara, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist and associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine in Connecticut.
  • Giorgia Cappella is a UK-based nail tech and the head educator at The Gel Bottle.
  • Kelly Dobos is a cosmetic chemist in Cincinnati.

In this story:

What are BIAB nails?

BIAB is a thick, viscous, multitasking builder gel. Typical builder gel is housed in a pot and used for reinforcing weak nails. It’s often topped with classic gel polish to add color and designs for a structured or hard gel manicure. BIAB, on the other hand, combines the effects of primer, base coat, builder gel, and color into one bottle Kandalec says. “BIAB is strong and durable like acrylic manicures but provides a lightweight, natural finish like gel,” she adds.

The Gelbottle

The GelBottle Inc Builder in a Bottle in Love BIAB

Available in over 50 colors, many BIAB polishes are soft nudes and pastel pinks. “Most [of my] BIAB clients tend to lean towards the more dainty and natural look,” Chicago-based nail artist Anissa Campos says. “But you can also add all sorts of embellishments to your BIAB manicure, such as charms, chrome powder, and airbrush [designs].”

BIAB is for professional use only. You must be a licensed nail tech to purchase a bottle, so you’ll need to visit a salon for a BIAB manicure if you’re not.

What are the benefits of a BIAB manicure?

Daily tasks like typing, household chores, and workout classes can weaken nails over time. A BIAB manicure is a great option for those who want to grow, repair, and reinforce their natural nails, especially if they are brittle. “Think of BIAB as armor for your nails,” Kandalec says. “It gives your nails a protective overlay, which makes them less likely to chip or crack and more likely to grow to whatever length you desire.” Board-certified dermatologist Mona Gohara confirms this benefit, adding that strengthening natural nails and making them less likely to split or crumble is an important feature of this trendy new nail formula.

Because BIAB is thicker than the typical gel manicure, you won’t be able to bite through it, which is helpful if you’re trying to break the habit of nail-biting, Campos says. Its viscosity also helps visibly smooth ridges, splits, and discoloration.

It won’t change the actual structure of your nail, though. “It’s very difficult to smooth out ridges,” Dr. Gohara explains. “Ridges are a function of genetics, what we do to our nails, and time. In some instances, medicated topical lacquers may help [even out your nail], but it is not an easy task.”

How does a BIAB manicure compare to a gel manicure?

Both BIAB and gel manicures shield your nail plate, but Campos says the former is more durable, withstanding more of the elements life throws at it. According to Cincinnati-based cosmetic chemist Kelly Dobos, this sturdiness is thanks to a Bis(methacryloyloxyethyl) phosphate, a monomer typically used in dentistry to create fillings, bonds, sealants, and crowns that can endure the wear and tear of polishing and chewing. Gel polish, on the other hand, gets its durability from a lower, weaker concentration of monomers and oligomers, which doesn’t give nails as hard of a coating.
