What happens when you stop wearing heels?

by Lina Clémence June 20, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

A couple of months ago, I visited the Supersports Factory Outlet at MBK Shopping Centre in Bangkok. It’s a great place to shop for off-season sports shoes and the like, and I snagged a pair of sports shoes at a very reasonable price. But this post isn’t about shopping at Supersports.

It’s about how I suddenly realised that my feet weren’t the same as they used to be once I stopped wearing heels.

In college and university, I all but lived in sneakers. I bought my first pair of working shoes (with heels) before I started work. Like all young working adult women then, I was conditioned into thinking that we had to wear heels to work, to fit some sort of mould; almost like a rite of passage into adulthood.

I started my working life in a traditional profession during vastly different era, where the work culture was very traditional, and misogyny was (is, even) rife. Wearing skirts was practically compulsory, and heels were expected. Young ‘uns will never get it LOL! 😀

While I was never hugely into shoes, I did find myself conforming to the norm. I wore heels ranging from the thick clunky ones that I could walk in, to almost stilettos, that I could not LOL! 😀 I wore round-toed shoes to sleek, pointy toed heels. They were uncomfortable, I battled blisters, and I never enjoyed wearing heels. But I conformed, because that’s what we do.

As the years wore on, I noticed that my feet had developed bunions due to the awkward, unnatural shape they had been forced into over the years. While I did not wear tight leather heeled shoes that often, I wore them often enough that it had affected the shape of my feet. The bunions on one of my feet would twinge now and again, but they weren’t that serious to warrant treatment – not yet.

And then, the pandemic hit over 5 years ago (gosh, already!) and I retreated to a casual lifestyle.

I stopped wearing heels, because there was nowhere to wear them to. I was semi-retired from office work, and there were no beauty events to attend. Social activities had ground to a halt for over 2 years.

In that time, I walked around barefoot, in slippers, or in sneakers. My feet were no longer restrained and constrained in tight, fitting leather shoes. I was no longer compelled to wear heels, putting strain on my knees, back and putting my posture in an unnatural position. I could wear whatever I wanted, and all I wanted was something comfortable on my feet that would protect them, and allow me the stability to walk comfortably, and to walk my dog.

When I needed to replace my sneakers recently, I took a long hard look at my feet and realised:

  • They were no longer the same size – my feet are now up to a whole size bigger than they were before, and for some reason, my sneaker sizes were almost 2 whole sizes bigger! This realisation was crucial, as I had been buying all the wrong sizes based on my old feet size, and I was wondering why my feet felt uncomfortable in my new shoes.
  • They were less narrow – I’d always had narrow feet, and they still are fairly narrow, but no longer narrow enough to fit into my old leather shoes LOL RIP my narrow Ferragamo shoes I had to specially buy online because they don’t carry the width here 🙁 My feet seem to have ‘spread’ so are wider than they used to be
  • My bunions were less severe and my feet look less deformed – I hadn’t realised that my bunion hadn’t twinged in a while, and while my toes aren’t straight, they appeared to be less deformed. I had not done anything to them in this time, merely allowed my feet to be in a natural state.
  • How liberating and free my feet felt in non-leather shoes – I wear exclusively sneakers or slippers these days, and my feet feel so free! They can actually MOVE and breathe now.

I’m sad about my cupboard of heels and shoes that no longer fit, of course. But at the same time, I’m happy that my feet have been allowed to revert to a more natural state, and that I no longer am forced to conform to societal norms and trot around in heels when I don’t enjoy it.

Is this post about not wearing heels, or just about feeling more liberated by throwing off yet another shackle of societal norms? It’s hard to say – probably a little of both 🙂

Do you still wear heels?

[REVIEW] Benton PHA Peeling Toner

by Lina Clémence June 18, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

I’m so excited to be back at blogging and of course the new Benton product!

They sent this PHA Peeling Toner to me for review purposes about 3 weeks ago so let’s read what I thought about this product 🙂

If you aren’t familiar with PHA, it is basically in the same team as those AHA and BHA but PHA molecules is bigger than those two so makes it more suitable to sensitive skin people. I’ve tried one product with PHA before and basically it suits me so well so I’m pretty excited about this one.

From Benton:

+ Contains Natural Moisturizing Factor, Chrysanthemum Extract and 3% of the third generation PHA (Lactobionic acid) which helps clear impurities and sebum secretion.

+ Minimum photosensitivity of PHA and it melts impurities on the skin while forming water barrier, leaving the skin smooth and clear.

+ Contains Sodium PA and Hyaluronic Acid which are Natural Moisturizing Factors, and Centaurea Cyanus Flower Water and Chrysanthemum Extract which are also known as natural moisturizing water or soothing water. These ingredients leaving leave skin moist by soothing and moiturizing skin that may become dry from removing dead skin cells and impurities.

+ The peeling toner is free of artificial fragrance, coloring, volatile alcohol, PEGs and other controversial ingredients. It is mildly acidic, dermatologically tested product which helps with sufficient moisturization, allowing even sensitive skin to exfoliate without burden.

Simple and clean design.

Pump bottle.

My thoughts:

+ I’ve been using this from the Day 1 it arrives until now and Benton specifically wrote that rather than using this everyday, 2-3 times a week is recommended or suitable frequency so that the toner could adapt to the skin properly. I’m using it 2-3 times a week or more since I find that it adapt to my skin quite well.

+ A cotton pad is suggested to be used with the toner so I didn’t directly patting it on my face.

+ The toner is quite runny in consistency so it took quite an amount to soak my cotton pad and honestly I hate using cotton pad because it feels that I’m wasting product on the cotton pad more haha

+ Since the texture is quite runny and clear, it absorbs into my skin in seconds. Although it doesn’t feels extremely moisturizing but I don’t feel any tightness which is good. So it shows that it has the moisturizing properties despite the texture.

+ This toner is used as the the next step after I cleanse my face. I feel that my next step of skincare (e.g: serums, moisturizer, etc) absorbed much much much better after I applied on this toner. I was rather surprised because it usually took time for those skincare to be fully dry on face and honestly it shorten the time taken for me to finish my routines.

+There’s little to none of fragrance with this toner. Most of the time I couldn’t detect any and if I did, it did have the faint smell of AHA.

+ I had acne on the sides of my face and I sometimes use the cotton pad with toner soak in with aggression so sometimes it does irritate those parts so I recommend you to be careful on those areas or better, use patting motion on those areas and don’t keep layering it on because it will irritate your acne.

+ Does my skin improved? I’m not so sure about this however, it did feel smoother and like I said, it helps in helping my skincare absorbed better.

+ One thing that I had complain with this toner is the pump bottle. I find that the texture is rather runny and this pump does not help at all. Most of the time the pump is too tight and when I try to pump the liquid, it keep spurting everywhere :l  I do hope than Benton can improve on the bottle’s function or just put it in mist bottle. That would 100% helps.

+ Would I make a purchase? For now I think no because I love my Benton BHA Aloe Toner because it has everything I like especially that it is more moisturizing than this. However, I would use this as a side toner as interval to my current toner.

That’s all, thank you for reading 🙂

Zara Gourmand Addict Eau de Toilette Review

by Lina Clémence June 15, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Zara Gourmand Addict Eau de Toilette Review: Imagine a fragrance that feels like a warm embrace on a chilly evening, a scent that wraps you in layers of sweetness, warmth, and sophistication. Zara’s Gourmand Addict Eau de Toilette is exactly that—a perfume that celebrates the art of indulgence. With its rich, warm dessert-like aroma, this fragrance is perfect for those who love to make a statement with their scent.

Whether you’re heading to a cozy dinner date or simply want to feel luxurious on an ordinary day, Gourmand Addict promises to be your perfect companion. But does it live up to its name? In this detailed review, we’ll explore every facet of this fragrance, from its intoxicating scent profile to its performance on the skin. Let’s dive into the world of Gourmand Addict and discover what makes it so addictive.

About

According to Zara’s official website, Gourmand Addict Eau de Toilette is a fragrance that “combines the sweetness of caramel with the intensity of vanilla and the freshness of mandarin orange.” It’s described as a warm, sensual, and addictive scent that’s perfect for those who love gourmand fragrances. The perfume comes in a 90 ml bottle, making it a generous addition to your fragrance collection.

The fragrance is part of Zara’s Gourmand line, which is known for its edible-inspired scents. It’s designed to evoke feelings of comfort, indulgence, and joy, making it a popular choice for everyday wear.

How to Use

Using Gourmand Addict Eau de Toilette is simple and straightforward. Here’s how to make the most of this fragrance:

  1. Spray on Pulse Points: Apply the perfume to your wrists, neck, and behind the ears. These areas generate heat, which helps to diffuse the scent throughout the day.
  2. Layer for Intensity: If you want a more intense fragrance experience, pair it with other products from the Gourmand line, such as the body mist or lotion.
  3. Avoid Over-Application: A little goes a long way with this fragrance. Start with 1-2 sprays and add more if needed.
  4. Reapply as Needed: While the fragrance has decent staying power, you can reapply it throughout the day to keep the scent fresh.

Price

Gourmand Addict Eau de Toilette is priced at:

  • USD: $29.90 (90 ml / 3.04 fl oz)
  • Euros: Approximately €25.90 (varies by region)
  • AED: Approximately 110 AED
  • INR: Approximately ₹2,500

The price may vary depending on promotions, discounts, or regional availability. Zara often offers discounts, so keep an eye out for deals!

My Experience

Packaging and First Impressions

The Gourmand Addict Eau de Toilette comes in a sleek, minimalist bottle with a golden cap and a transparent glass body. The design is elegant yet understated, reflecting Zara’s signature style. The bottle feels sturdy and luxurious, and the spray nozzle dispenses the fragrance evenly. While the packaging is simple, it’s functional and travel-friendly, making it easy to carry in your bag.

Fragrance: A Sweet Symphony

The moment I sprayed Gourmand Addict, I was greeted with a burst of sweetness that felt like stepping into a patisserie. The fragrance is warm, inviting, and utterly indulgent. It’s the kind of scent that makes you feel instantly happy and comforted.

What Does Zara Gourmand Addict Smell Like?

Gourmand Addict is a quintessential gourmand fragrance, designed to evoke the aroma of delicious desserts. Here’s a breakdown of its scent profile:

  • Top Notes: The fragrance opens with the zesty freshness of mandarin orange, which adds a bright, citrusy touch to the sweetness.
  • Middle Notes: As the scent settles, the heart reveals the rich, creamy aroma of caramel. This is where the fragrance truly shines, offering a decadent, dessert-like experience.
  • Base Notes: The dry-down is warm and sensual, with the smooth, comforting scent of vanilla and a hint of musk in a powdery background.

The sillage (the trail the fragrance leaves) is moderate, making it noticeable without being overpowering. It’s perfect for close encounters and intimate settings. The lasting power is decent, with the scent lingering for about 4-6 hours on my skin. However, on clothes, it lasts much longer, sometimes even until the next day.

Texture and Application

The fragrance is light and airy, making it easy to apply and layer. It doesn’t feel heavy or cloying, which is a common issue with gourmand fragrances. The spray nozzle works smoothly, delivering just the right amount of product with each use.

Performance on Skin

On my skin, Gourmand Addict develops beautifully, with each layer of the scent unfolding gradually. The citrusy top notes give way to the creamy caramel, which then blends seamlessly into the warm vanilla base. The fragrance feels cozy and comforting, making it perfect for colder months or evening wear.

Results and Longevity

While the scent is delightful, its longevity could be better. On my skin, it lasts for about 4-6 hours, which is decent but not exceptional. However, on clothes, it performs much better, lasting well into the next day.

Ingredients Breakdown

While Zara doesn’t disclose the full list of ingredients, the key notes—mandarin orange, caramel, and vanilla—are clearly highlighted. These ingredients are carefully balanced to create a fragrance that’s sweet but not overwhelming, warm but not heavy.

Zara Gourmand Addict Eau de Toilette Review MBF blog

Pros

Based on reviews from Zara’s website, Fragrantica, Amazon, and other platforms, here are the standout pros of Gourmand Addict Eau de Toilette:

  1. Affordable Luxury: High-quality fragrance at an affordable price.
  2. Delicious Scent: Perfect for gourmand lovers, with its sweet, dessert-like aroma.
  3. Versatile: Suitable for both casual and formal occasions.
  4. Elegant Packaging: Simple yet sophisticated design.
  5. Moderate Sillage: Noticeable without being overpowering.
  6. Long-Lasting on Clothes: Stays fresh on fabrics for hours.

Cons

While the fragrance has many positives, there are a few downsides to consider:

  1. Average Longevity on Skin: Lasts only 4-6 hours on the skin.
  2. Not for Everyone: The sweetness may be too much for those who prefer fresh or floral scents.
  3. Limited Availability: Often out of stock due to high demand.

Advises

Here are some tips to make the most of Gourmand Addict Eau de Toilette:

  1. Layer with Matching Products: Use the body mist or lotion from the Gourmand line to enhance the fragrance’s longevity.
  2. Apply to Clothes: Spraying it on your clothes can help the scent last longer.
  3. Use in Moderation: A little goes a long way, so avoid over-spraying.
  4. Store Properly: Keep the bottle in a cool, dry place to preserve the fragrance.

Rating

After considering all aspects, I would give Gourmand Addict Eau de Toilette a 4 out of 5 stars. While the scent is delightful and the price is reasonable, the average longevity on the skin prevents it from being a perfect score.

Final Thoughts

Zara’s Gourmand Addict Eau de Toilette is a rich, sweet, indulgent fragrance that’s perfect for those who love gourmand scents. Its warm, dessert-like aroma is comforting and luxurious, making it a great choice for everyday wear or special occasions. While it may not last as long as some high-end perfumes, its affordability and delicious scent make it a worthy addition to your collection. So, if you’re looking for a fragrance that feels like a warm hug, Gourmand Addict might just be your new obsession.

Natural Makeup For Work (Video Tutorial)

by Lina Clémence June 14, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Is that how my face look like 0_0

Can’t believe I actually filmed my first makeup tutorial in 2.5 years.

I’ve been away THAT long, always wanted to come back and make more makeup/beauty videos, but just never know when I can do it. I thought it would be a lot more smashing and exciting, but it was just like any other day in reality.

I have not reached that state where I dreamed of reaching – silky smooth, hydrated and problem free skin – I now question if perfection is actually achievable. Nonetheless, I am at a state where I’m happy with what I currently have, and have accepted it to be part of me (still working on it, but I’m doing so well now!). It’s so strange to see myself in makeup again after so long. I’ve grown to really like my own face without makeup, and with some makeup on, it adorns my face so beautifully. It makes me feel great to be able to put makeup on once again!

So with the blemish and flaws that are still present on my skin, I present to you this makeup look which is one of the looks I’ve been wearing to work the past 2 months.
It’s understated, natural, no perceivable eyeliner that set off alarms in most people’s eyes.
I love how easy it is, I can put this look together within 15 minutes in the morning rush hour :’D If I don’t mess up my brows that is. And I normally don’t, so I don’t know why I messed it up during recording!

This is the complete eye look, just really minimal. It looks even less obvious in video because the camera washes out some of the colour. In real life, it gives myself beautiful and natural looking depth. Indiscernible to the untrained eyes.

THE PRODUCTS

  1. E.L.F. Perfect Finish HD Powder
  2. KATE Mineral Powder Foundation (OC-C)
  3. AVENE Very High Protection Cream SPF50+
  4. CANMAKE Mat Fleur Cheeks (04)
  5. KATE Brown Shade Eyes (BR-6)
  6. REVLON Matte Balm (225 Sultry) (Review and swatches here)
  7. MAYBELLINE Volum’ Express The Magnum Waterproof
  8. KATE Lash Maximizer White
  9. INNISFREE Auto Eyebrow Pencil (03 Grey)

Compared to my old looks, this look has a lot less products, right? That’s mostly because I just started getting back into wearing makeup recently, and I am really cautious this time. I don’t want to put on too much just in case it might irritate my skin. So I start with very little products, and slowly add more to it if I want to. Who knows, maybe a few months down the road, the number of products I use will increase exponentially, trying to squeeze every single product from the new releases onto my face all at the same time? Hahaha!

The brushes I used are all from REAL TECHNIQUES (not TRUE TECHNIQUES hahaha). The purple brushes are from their Eye Makeup Starter Kit. Looks like the recently revamped it, kept the brushes the same and changed the case that comes with it (now grey instead of black!).

I’ve actually been looking at getting a new lash curler, but my old KOJI No.73 is still working fine.. Just need to change the rubber lining every so often because it does break apart, which affects the curl that I can get. Speaking of which, it’s time I change to a new rubber lining.

As for the makeup brush cleaning sponge, I bought the sponge from a store that sells household products, cut it to fit the cute tin case my aunt gave me and it’s done. Really handy for cleaning the brushes in between different colours, especially when going from dark to light shades. The excess powder collects at the bottom which I then clean out once in a while. Time to wash the sponge soon, it’s getting brown!

All in all, I am really glad I can do this again. Even though this gratitude is an afterthought, I still want to note it down. It really helps to reflect upon all that have happened in my life and to count my blessings. Even though things aren’t exactly at where I want them to be, I’m still rejoicing at how far I’ve come, and how much improvements I’ve experienced. I will continue to keep my body, mind, and skin healthy, and hope to bring more videos with you all.

And now, the video tutorial.

Hong Kong is a metropolitan city where life is swift and hectic. In addition to Skyscrapers and its famous Star Ferry. Hong Kong has an amazing diversity in its cuisine. Still, the desire for a home-cooked meal never fades away. This desire tempts Hongkongers to learn cooking. A busy life may be a hindrance to learning new skills. But the desire overshadows it. Most of us pretend to be master chefs at home. Still, some of us need assistance around the kitchen. If you are a vegetarian and looking for cooking classes. You are at the right place. We have put together a list of the best vegetarian cooking classes in Hong Kong. So, tie your apron, and let’s get started.

The institute offers daytime, nighttime, short and long courses. The Advance Diploma in Hotel Culinary Management is a 2/3-year program. You can learn kitchen and knife skills, gastronomy, and baking. The two-year Bachelor of Arts in Professional Culinary Art is an excellent opportunity to earn a degree. The program teaches kitchen communication, hospitable marketing, food cost, and culture and gastronomy. Not only this. There are numerous short courses that teach making European deserts and drinks also.

Depology Matrixyl 3000 Travel Set Review — Laura Loukola

Depology Matrixyl 3000 Travel Set Review

Matrixyl 3000 Collagen Boosting Serum $40 (€36.7) for 30ml (1.01 fl.Oz)
Matrixyl 3000 Travel Set $50 $40 (€36.7) for 30ml (1.01 fl.Oz) AND 9ml /0.30 fl.Oz)

For reference: I am 34 years old with normal-dry/dehydrated skin. My main concerns are dullness, tightness, and the occasional dry patch on my cheeks. My congestion is manageable, and I rarely break out anymore. Dehydration makes my fine lines and signs of aging more prominent, so I’m a huge fan of hydrating serums and essences. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become pickier about the products I use: solely hyaluronic acid-based products can make my skin feel even tighter if I’m not quickly sealing them in with a layer of cream or facial oil.

Last fall I struggled with sinusitis, frequent flu, and fatigue (hence, I had to take some time off from work and blogging). I was often too tired to do my many-step skincare routine, but Matrixyl 3000 Serum was easy and quick to apply, comforting my skin instantly. I enjoy that Depology Matrixyl 3000 has several humectants (aloe leaf juice, glycerin, hyaluronic acid) and emollients (rosehip seed and sunflower seed oil) for long-lasting soothing and hydration. Not to forget the collagen-boosting star ingredient, which is in a high concentration. I’m finally healthy, and I’ve been using my 2nd bottle for a few weeks with my usual skincare routine. I still enjoy it! According to my experience, this serum is beneficial whether you prefer a complex skincare routine or a simplified one. I cannot measure my collagen levels, but my skin looks and feels smoother and brighter, and my fine lines are less pronounced.

My usual routine is cleansing, toning, and massaging a few drops of the serum on my face, neck, and décolléte. Especially if you pick up Matrixyl Collagen Boosting Serum Travel Set it will last you weeks, the price is very reasonable, and the mini bottle is easy to toss into your travel bag. I follow the serum with an eye cream, moisturizer, and SPF during the day. It works beautifully under makeup. My evening routine is similar, but I pair the Matrixyl 3000 serum with a retinol cream (or just a facial oil if I’m lazy). I also tested the serum paired with Depology Micro-Dart patches (review here) overnight to give my eye area extra pampering. Just make sure you let the serum absorb before applying the patches!

I would suggest this serum for most people and any skin type. It’s also vegan, cruelty-free, and free of artificial fragrance. I know people prone to acne may need to pay attention to coconut oil, but the amount seems minimal. I didn’t get any congestion (I struggled with acne in my mid-20s). For the best results, check out Depology’s simple ingredient pairing guide. I found it very helpful!
