The Makeup Box: My Latest Obsession: Kuretake Gansai Tambi Watercolors

by Lina Clémence July 5, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

A different method of painting…

I’m no artist, but the one thing my dad taught me at the age of 2… before piano, and before reading and writing… was drawing. And he was quite an avid painter in his younger years so I grew up with an obsessive love for art and aesthetics in general.

So I’ve been spending more time painting on paper than on my face recently. And one of my favorite things to do is swatching paints, sheering them, and blending them. Watching the colors swirl and dance and bleed across the paper, learning to let go, not overblend, and allow the pigments show their own character is so therapeutic. Not unlike makeup.

Anyway my latest babies are 2 Japanese Kuretaki Gansai Tambi palettes, one the basic range in 36 shades (about S$48 on Lazada, which is close to $10 cheaper than at Art Friend locally), and a special non-standard edition of 12 colors ($24 from Art Friend) which I picked up in-store because I noticed none of the shades were an overlap with the main sets. These seem to be very “Spring-like” colors but I can’t find any English label with a name I can discern.

A quick Google will return tons of information and videos showing how Gansai Tambi colors differ from standard western watercolors, and how best to use them. They have a more vivid tone in many cases, and higher opacity, but they aren’t matte like Gouache.

My favorite thing besides the vibrancy and high contrast (you can get the colors very intense very easily, and you need the tiniest amount if you want a light wash of color), is the shade range. They have all the interesting in-between greens and reds and blues that you’d usually need to blend several colors to get in standard paint sets. Ivy green, an incredible malachite aqua, prussian blue, bean red, etc.

It’s just EASIER for beginners to find distinctive tones for nature-painting and fantasy art, without fussing with a ton of blending.

Have you played with any of these and which are your favorite palettes or colors?

Soko’s Most Buzzed-About Product of 2024 |

by Lina Clémence July 4, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Meet the IOPE PDRN Caffeine Shot Serum, the viral product taking TikTok and Instagram by storm. Known for its signature lifting, anti-aging and firming benefits, fans have dubbed it “filler in a bottle,” and “Botox in a bottle,” making it a great alternative to injectables.

From beauty influencers to skincare enthusiasts, social media is buzzing with impressive before-and-afters. This serum has sold out four times on sokoglam.com, earning its spot as a cult-favorite for radiant skin. Users rave about the serum’s ability to lift facial contours, soften fine lines, and deliver visible results in just a few weeks. Skincare influencers like Ashley Mixon swear by it, calling it their “go-to for glowing, lifted skin.”

What is PDRN?

Popular in Korea, PDRN injectables are traditionally derived from salmon DNA, and are a powerhouse ingredient known for its skin-repairing, regenerative, and anti-inflammatory benefits. IOPE has reimagined this iconic ingredient with Bio-PDRN — an innovative, vegan-friendly alternative. This plant-based formula offers many of the benefits of traditional PDRN, making it a game-changer in sustainable and effective skincare. The formula is also packed with 20,000 ppm of caffeine to revitalize tired skin.

Why We Love It

  • Lifting and Firming: The caffeine works to boost circulation and tighten sagging skin, especially around the cheeks, jawline, and mouth.
  • Anti-Aging Benefits: PDRN stimulates collagen production, improving skin elasticity and smoothing fine lines.
  • Hydration and Brightness: Strengthens the skin’s moisture barrier while reducing puffiness and dark circles.
  • Vegan and Gentle: Plant-based PDRN and a skin-friendly pH make it perfect for daily use, even with active ingredient

How to Incorporate It into Your Routine

After cleansing and toning, apply several drops of PDRN serum both morning and night, following with your moisturizer. Expect your skin to feel hydrated and firm within days, with visible improvements in elasticity and texture in as little as two weeks!

by Lina Clémence July 2, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Looking for fresh ways to take care of yourself? Sometimes, the usual routines get boring. That’s why trying new self-care tools can bring exciting benefits. From calming sounds to gentle massages, these unusual tools can help you relax, refresh, and feel better. Keep reading to discover ten unique self-care tools you’ve probably never tried!

Key Takeaways

  • Protect Your Hair: Sauna hats help prevent heat damage, dryness, and color fading.
  • Support Healthy Hair Growth: Wearing a sauna hat enhances circulation around your scalp.
  • Maintain Comfort: Sauna hats keep a balanced temperature around your head, improving your sauna experience.
  • Preserve Your Hair Care Routine: Protect your hair while enjoying the detox benefits of the sauna.
  • Elevate Sauna Benefits: Enhance your sauna experience without compromising hair health.

10 Unusual Self-Care Tools You’ve Probably Never Tried

Crystal Healing Wands for Energy Balance

Crystal healing wands are tools made from natural stones, each believed to possess unique energetic properties that can help balance your body’s energy. When used during meditation or energy work, these wands are thought to channel healing frequencies through the body, clearing blockages and restoring harmony. Different stones like amethyst or rose quartz target specific areas of the body, such as the mind or heart. By incorporating them into your routine, you might experience a boost in emotional well-being and physical vitality, especially when paired with focused intention and mindfulness.

Sound Therapy Bowls for Deep Relaxation

Sound therapy bowls, often made of crystal or metal, emit soothing vibrations that can promote deep relaxation and stress relief. When played, these bowls resonate at specific frequencies that help to recalibrate your body’s energy, encouraging a calm, meditative state. Whether using them during yoga, meditation, or simply for stress reduction, the harmonic tones have been shown to reduce anxiety, ease muscle tension, and support overall emotional well-being. Their unique sounds act like a sonic massage, promoting healing and deep relaxation.

Acupressure Mats to Release Tension

Acupressure mats are an excellent tool for relieving muscle tension and stress. Covered with hundreds of small plastic spikes, these mats stimulate pressure points along your body, mimicking the effects of acupressure therapy. When used regularly, acupressure mats can help release built-up tension, enhance circulation, and ease chronic pain, especially in areas like the back, neck, and shoulders. Though the sensation may feel intense at first, the relief and relaxation that follow make the experience worth it, making it a perfect addition to any self-care routine.

Herbal Steam Inhalers for Respiratory Clarity

Herbal steam inhalers are an easy and effective way to clear your respiratory system. They allow you to inhale steam infused with natural herbs such as eucalyptus or peppermint, which help open airways and soothe nasal passages. The combination of heat and herbal properties can alleviate symptoms of colds, allergies, or sinus congestion, providing immediate relief. By adding herbs that have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, these inhalers support lung health and improve breathing, offering a simple yet powerful way to care for your respiratory system.

Gua Sha Tools for Facial Rejuvenation

Gua Sha tools are a popular addition to facial care routines for their ability to enhance blood flow, reduce puffiness, and promote a radiant complexion. By gently scraping the skin, these tools stimulate circulation and help flush out toxins, leading to smoother, firmer skin. They also encourage collagen production, which can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Using Gua Sha on a regular basis can improve facial contours, boost elasticity, and leave the skin looking fresh and rejuvenated.

Aromatherapy Diffusers with Unique Essential Blends

Aromatherapy diffusers are a fantastic way to incorporate the calming and therapeutic benefits of essential oils into your daily routine. By diffusing unique essential oil blends, you can create a customized environment tailored to your mood and needs. Some blends help with relaxation, others promote focus, and certain oils can even improve sleep quality. Using a diffuser allows you to fill your space with these natural aromas, enhancing your mental well-being and creating a soothing atmosphere that supports emotional balance and calm.

Magnetic Therapy Bracelets for Pain Relief

Magnetic therapy bracelets are designed to provide natural pain relief by using magnets to influence blood flow and circulation. The idea is that the magnetic fields help to reduce inflammation, alleviate discomfort, and promote healing in areas affected by chronic pain, such as arthritis or muscle soreness. While the scientific evidence on their effectiveness varies, many users report a reduction in pain and improved mobility. Whether worn daily or during flare-ups, magnetic therapy bracelets offer a non-invasive alternative for managing pain naturally.

Infrared Light Therapy Devices for Skin Health

Infrared light therapy devices use specific wavelengths of light to penetrate deep into the skin, promoting healing and improving skin health. The therapy helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and acne, while also enhancing hydration and texture. By stimulating collagen production and increasing circulation, these devices rejuvenate the skin from within. They are a convenient at-home option for skincare enthusiasts, offering similar benefits to professional treatments without the high cost or time commitment.

Breathwork Training Aids for Stress Reduction

Breathwork training aids are tools designed to help you practice controlled breathing techniques to reduce stress, anxiety, and promote relaxation. Whether through digital apps, breathing masks, or guided exercises, these tools assist in calming the nervous system, reducing heart rate, and improving overall mental clarity. By encouraging deep, rhythmic breathing, breathwork aids help reset your emotional state, making them valuable tools for managing panic attacks or everyday stress. Over time, breathwork can become an essential part of your self-care routine for long-term stress management.

Weighted Eye Masks to Enhance Sleep Quality

Weighted eye masks offer a simple yet powerful way to improve sleep quality. The gentle pressure they provide on your face mimics a feeling of being held or hugged, which promotes relaxation and can ease anxiety. This helps to release melatonin, the hormone responsible for regulating sleep. They are especially effective for those who struggle with falling asleep or staying asleep due to stress or insomnia. By blocking out light and providing a sense of calm, weighted eye masks can create an ideal sleep environment and improve overall restfulness.

Sauna Hats for Protecting Hair and Enhancing Sauna Benefits

Sauna hats are designed to protect your hair from the intense heat of the sauna while still allowing you to enjoy the full benefits of the experience. A good sauna hat, made from heat-resistant materials, helps to prevent dryness, color fading, and heat damage, keeping your hair soft and healthy. The sauna hat also helps maintain a balanced temperature around the scalp, improving circulation and supporting healthy hair growth. By wearing a sauna hat, you can enjoy the detoxifying benefits of the sauna without compromising your hair care routine.

FAQs

How do I determine which unusual self-care tool is safe and suitable for my specific health condition?

When choosing an unusual self-care tool, it’s essential to consider factors like your specific health condition, symptoms, and medical history. These elements help you pick a tool that fits your needs and won’t interfere with any treatments you’re currently using. Before diving in, always evaluate the safety of the tool. Check reviews, look for medical endorsements, and ensure it’s designed for your condition. It’s also wise to consult your doctor, especially if the tool is unfamiliar. They can guide you and help prevent any negative reactions. Watch out for red flags like vague claims or unsubstantiated promises. Lastly, make sure the tool suits your lifestyle. It should be easy to integrate into your routine, so you’ll actually use it regularly.

Are there digital or tech-based unusual self-care tools that are effective but under the radar?

Are you looking to level up your self-care game with some tech-based tools that are effective but still under the radar? There are several digital gems that are surprisingly powerful. For mental well-being, apps like Calm Harm and Wysa fly under the radar but offer excellent support for managing anxiety and stress. If you’re into more immersive methods, virtual reality experiences like TRIPP can be a game-changer for relieving stress, providing a calming escape you never thought possible. Meditation apps, such as Insight Timer, offer deep, meaningful practices that often get overlooked. Music therapy tools like Relax Melodies are another unique option, blending soothing sounds with relaxation techniques to help ease anxiety. For those curious about AI, tools like Replika can even provide emotional support, acting as a conversational partner to boost mental well-being. As tech continues to evolve, these lesser-known tools are paving the way for a new, tech-powered approach to self-care.

Can unusual self-care tools be incorporated into a minimalist lifestyle or small living space?

In a minimalist lifestyle or small living space, unusual self-care tools can actually be a perfect fit. Many of these tools can be adapted to save space, with designs that emphasize simplicity and functionality. For example, multi-purpose tools, like a compact facial roller that doubles as a massager, can replace several gadgets, helping you keep clutter to a minimum. The beauty of minimalist design is that it’s not just about reducing items, but about selecting tools that complement the space’s aesthetic while remaining functional. Unconventional self-care gadgets often come in sleek, modern designs, allowing them to double as decor in your home. Tools like a portable essential oil diffuser or a small, stylish jade roller can bring relaxation into your space without sacrificing style. These tools offer a unique way to nurture your body and mind, enhancing both your well-being and the beauty of your small space.

How can I track the effectiveness of an unusual self-care tool over time?

When you start using an unusual self-care tool, it’s important to track its effectiveness in ways that matter to you. Begin by measuring key metrics like changes in mood and stress levels, as these are often the most immediate indicators of how the tool is affecting you. You can easily track these using apps or journaling. Don’t forget to monitor physical changes too, whether it’s energy levels, skin health, or even sleep quality, these factors often correlate with emotional well-being. If you’re dealing with specific issues like anxiety or sleep problems, check if the tool is helping with those directly. It’s also essential to evaluate your progress regularly, perhaps weekly or monthly, to get a clear picture of long-term benefits. Lastly, keeping an eye on your sleep patterns can be a game-changer. Good sleep is a cornerstone of both physical and mental health, and tracking it will give you a solid sense of how well your self-care tool is working.

Summer edition Wishtrend review | Stay Pretty and be Happy

by Lina Clémence July 1, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Hi all,

Hope you are all enjoying the summertime right now!

Let me share some products I was able to try and test these past few months which I received from Wishtrend!

Are you curious?

So as usual, Wishtrend is super generous with their longtime Wishtrenders and I was able to receive 5 products for review.

So let’s start the reviews!

Dear Klairs Daily comfort hand sanitizer gel

This product came out after Covid so it makes sense why Klairs released this type of product.

It might seem odd since they are more a  skincare oriented brand, but they did expand in offering body care and I’m glad they did.

24-07-28-17-47-08-145_deco

I like that this comes in a pump bottle so it’s easy and hygienic to use.

I left this close to the entrance so I use it when I come home, or each time I feel the need to clean my hands a bit.

During Covid, it became a habit for people to use hand sanitizer. Some were horrible and left this sticky feeling or just smelled so strong that it made me sneeze.

Luckily this hand sanitizer is one of the good ones!

24-07-28-17-47-55-390_deco

It’s unscented and doesn’t have that strong alcohol scent to it.

The texture is like jelly and watery at the same time, it’s easy to spread on your hands to cleansd them. The best part is that there is no sticky finish at the end and it leaves your hands so soft to the touch.

I sometimes skip my hand cream and just use this when I want my hands to be soft!

Even if Covid is over, knocks on wood, it is still important to keep your hands clean!

This is a great hand sanitizer if you are looking for one!

Dear Klairs Daily Comfort Hand Cream

So this one came out around the same time as the hand sanitizer.

It’s a really nice complementary product to use after the hand sanitizer!

24-07-28-17-45-15-893_deco

This comes in the same type of pump bottle but this one is darker so you can differentiate the products.

This hand cream feels quite thick and rich but once you start applying it, it’s not greasy and just like the hand sanitizer it’s not sticky after.

24-07-28-17-46-29-393_deco

This is a big bottle and honestly I just skip this since the hand sanitizer is really nice on the hands .

I can’t carry this around, but there is a smaller format of this hand cream which is good.

This is unscented so it’s great for anyone just looking for a basic hand cream with a non greasy and sticky finish.

This is also a good product, but I just really like their hand sanitizer more.

Dear Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Charging Serum

This was Klairs answer to provide a more stable Vitamin C based serum.

24-07-28-17-39-56-598_deco

As per the bottle this is a vitamin c derivative serum so this is more stable than a vitamin c serum only.

This comes in a pump bottle and the bottle is completely opaque to protect the product.

The product itself feels a bit oily but it doesn’t feel oily once you start applying it.

24-07-28-17-41-09-495_deco

It glides easily on the skin so it’s easy to use. I am still a bit weary of using vitamin c product so I didn’t use this regularly and mostly used it at night.

But when I used this , thankfully my skin did not react badly. There was no warm/ burning feeling.

My skin did not seem to be more sensitive after using this.

This should help in getting brighter skin, but I didn’t see much change since I didn’t use it too regularly.

By Wishtrend Blue Oasis Aloe Hydrating serum

This is a renewed version of the serum. The packaging is different as it follows the same line as other By Wishtrend serums .

24-07-28-17-42-11-719_deco

Just like the old version this was a nice serum to use to give an extra layer of hydration to your skin.

I think this is still perfect to use during warmer days. It’s not heavy, it feels watery and preps your skin for the next step.

24-07-28-17-44-02-696_deco

I do feel this has a bit more body as it’s less watery than before but it still slides on the skin nicely.

There really isn’t much to say for this product, it just do what it promises just like it’s name.

So if you are looking for a no fuss serum, this could be for you!

By Wishtrend Green Tea & Enzyme Milky Foaming Wash

This is another version of their enzyme wash but this is more for people with sensitive skin.

24-07-28-17-37-20-676_deco

This is great to use to for a gentle exfoliation.

If you don’t like using powder enzyme, this is a great alternative as it already comes in a liquid version.

24-07-28-17-39-13-366_deco

A pump to 2 is enough for your whole face. It looks a bit like cream, you then massage it and add water to make it lather.

Your skin will feel nice and soft afterwards. But like any exfoliator, you shouldn’t use it everyday.

This is indeed not drying after use, which is great!

I still do prefer the powder enzyme as I like the feeling of the powder scrubbing on my skin.

This version is more practical though as you don’t have powder flying around, making you sneeze!

Conclusion

This was another great set of products to try. The one I was more surprised and loved to use was the hand sanitizer.

I just love how soft and clean my hands are after using it.

The blue oasis aloe hydrating serum is still nice to use during summer, so it’s still a winner to me!

You can get these products on Wishtrend and use my code  CFA553EA for a discount.

Thank you Wishtrend for this opportunity!

A Year of Surprises & The End of the K-Beauty Decade

by Lina Clémence June 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

This year has been a plot twist that I never saw coming. Yes, this is happening: a post, on my blog, shambling out of a dusty corner of empties and snarled with torn webbing of sheetmask silk.

Even though this year has been non-stop and the most transformative and momentous period of the decade for me, I couldn’t let this year pass without an update +  some thoughts about the past and future of K-Beauty.

The pacific northwest is so much more beautiful than any photo can convey.

Many of you have sent me messages and emails asking what I’ve been up to, why I haven’t been posting, and if I’m going to be posting again. Here it is, and this year has been wild.

In this post:

  • What I’ve been doing instead of blogging aka “The Year Life Yanked Me Out of One Timeline and Shoved Me Into a Totally Different One”
  • What hooked me on K-Beauty & why my loins are no longer aflame about it
  • What soured me on the K-Beauty scene & beauty blogging
  • Where I think K-Beauty is going in the next decade if it lasts

Have you ever had the experience of having the next, say, 5-10 years of your life plotted out, and you’re minding your own business, living day to day, and then suddenly, something happens that snatches you up by the nose hairs and hurls you, metaphorical pants around ankles, into a completely new reality?

(Seriously, drop me a comment if you have had this happen to you. Because, wtf, man.)

What I’ve been doing instead of blogging, aka “The Year Life Yanked Me Out of One Timeline and Shoved Me Into a Totally Different One”

Last year, I was headed towards a future of banal domesticity. We’d bought our first house. We got a puppy. We made friends. We started renovating our house. My puppy became a tiny, sanity-and-home-destroying demon that devoured all my time and energy with the same gusto that she dispatched stuffed toys.

Thankfully, puppies don’t stay puppies forever, although you still have to survive their second, longer phase, the Final Boss Form known as a “teenager” which is much worse.

So naturally, I got another one. That’s not the plot twist, either.

Tiny border collie puppy is fierce, and fluffy
“Did your crazy ass get a second border collie?!” Yes, yes I did.

She was smol, she was floofy, she was born in December of last year, and we brought her home in February. She tormented Not-As-Tiny Demon with a vigor that felt karmic in its proportions, and life felt settled. We established a routine. I started washing my face again. My husband was becoming established in his career, and things were stable. Oppressively stable, even.

I was still miserable; living in the US for over a decade had taken its toll on me. I felt old, exhausted, lifeless. I was nearing the end of my 30’s, and was frankly resigned to early-onset middle age.

Then, it happened.

Beautiful cherry blossoms in Vancouver, Canada
The cherry blossom festival had me millennial-ing with my phone every few feet.

We went on vacation. (Resentfully, in my case!) It was a last-minute thing, with expiring flight credits and credit card travel points being the driving factor. I didn’t want to be away from my dogs, but off we went to Vancouver, Canada in the spring.

Predictably, it was heartbreaking. It felt so good to be home in Canada, to be back in a diverse place, to walk by a pair of young girls wearing hijabs who didn’t react to our presence by averting their eyes, stopping their conversation, or hurrying past nervously. The scenery was breathtaking, giving us mountains, forests, and ocean in a single glance.

Mountain and forest stream in British Columbia
B.C is really pretty. Really, really pretty.

And the food! My god, the food. Hand-pulled noodles. Ramen. Cheap, yet fresh sushi. Poke. Japanese bakeries. European charcuteries. Persian markets. Korean BBQ.

Korean BBQ
Korean BBQ made me want to weep with joy while shoving it down my maw

Vancouver is one of the most beautiful, and expensive, cities in the world. My husband fell in love, of course; being Canadian myself I knew that living there is a pipe dream few can afford.

But he couldn’t let it go: “I wonder what the job market is like in Vancouver.”

Me: *laughs in jaded realism*

Dr. Mr. The Pear: “There’s a job posting in my specialty, should I apply just to see?”

Me: *still laughing* “Why not, it’s not like they would offer us something that would make it worth it to sell the house we just bought, and move across the country.”

Me, my husband, and the Vancouver job market:
Time to laugh, loudly and at length
Who wants to move to Vancouver? Ok, who wants to move to Vancouver *and* still afford to eat? BAHAHAHAHAHAA!

Er, yeah. Welp. Come Mother’s Day weekend, we’ve suddenly got a job offer that we can’t refuse.

We’d have to sell our house. We’d have to finish renovating our house to sell it. He’d have to go through immigration. He’d have to leave for Canada, almost immediately. I’d have to stay behind, finish work on the house, hire contractors for what I couldn’t DIY, handle both dogs, put the house on the market, pack all our stuff and move it, by myself. Without a car, in a small, non-transit-or-walking-friendly Midwest town.

But on the other hand, Vancouver. Vancouver, Canada. To be home, to be free of the escalating shitshow that is US politics, to live in a place dreamt of by many. To be independent again, to feel safe. Dare I hope, happy again.

So we did it. In the space of a few weeks, we went from confident we were going to be living a small, withering, but comfortable little life, in our little house, in a little town, to uprooting everything and moving to another country.

Not going to lie, renovating a house by myself with dogs underfoot was hell, and it took forever.

Gluing down hardwood flooring really sucks
Have you ever installed glue-down hardwood flooring? If you haven’t, it sucks.

I’ll spare you the gory, boring details of construction drama, packing and moving drama, immigration drama, and house selling drama, but if you’ve done any of the above, you know it’s the endless, protracted, very wrong kind of excitement.

It also didn’t feel real. It still doesn’t feel real, even though I’m now typing this in front of a fireplace, gazing out the window at the lights of the city, listening to the perpetual rain of the Pacific Northwest. I’m happy. My husband is happy. We eat amazing food. We walk, we hike, we go to the gym and enjoy it. Our dogs miss the constant games of fetch in our large backyard, but love getting muddy in exciting, wild places.

Muddy, but happy, dogs in a mountain stream
What’s the best thing to do while covered in mud? Hop in a stream and shake!

I feel alive again. I’m excited about the future, and while it’s a slow process undoing the damage a decade of depression has left on my body, and mind, it’s happening. It’s happening.

What hooked me on K-Beauty & why my loins are no longer aflame about it

Don’t get me wrong, after almost an entire decade of using, thinking, and occasionally writing about K-Beauty, I still love it. But I loved it in part because it forced me to learn new things, because it was challenging and inaccessible, because the leading experts on it were everyday people like me, cobbling together ingredients lists from Google Translate and comparing swatches on forums.

Products became popular through word-of-mouth and performance, not because they landed in a beauty editor’s PR pile with a promo cheque attached. Ever read a “Best K-Beauty Products list” on a mainstream media site and wonder where the hell they got their picks from, because you’ve either never heard of any of the products, or they’re mediocre at best? They are there because their brands, or the shops that carry them, are willing to pay to play.

The science of skincare was a new frontier for me, full of chemistry and dazzling studies and new knowledge waiting for those willing to slog through Google Scholar. But once you’ve adjusted to accommodate pH, gentle surfactants, and worked out which chemical exfoliants work for your skin, there’s not much more to do. Hydrate your skin, then seal it in with a richer moisturizer, and you’re set.

Desperate to maintain the momentum of new, cutting-edge technology, K-Beauty PR turned to increasingly ludicrous gimmicks like splash masks, sheet masks with injectable ampoules, microneedle masking patches, acupressure masks, and an endless array of sexy new extracts that were supposed to revolutionize skincare yet disappeared from our radar within a year.

What soured me on the K-Beauty scene & beauty blogging

Not gonna lie, K-Beauty hit its peak in 2014-2016, and it’s been fading ever since. When the conversation shifted from the discoveries of everyday users to the narratives of shops who cheerfully retconned the rise of K-Beauty in the west while repackaging its garage-band grassroots appeal into a contrived shine of corporate gloss.

Worse, somehow those everyday users, the bloggers, the forum posters, the Instagram reviewers were rebranded into “influencers”, a term which sparked immediate loathing the first time it landed in my inbox. The concept of peddling one’s influence, as a personality or media figure, rather than focusing on the quality of their work, was deeply offensive to me.

It remains one of the biggest deterrents whenever I think about sitting down for a quick review of my latest go-to sunscreen, like a whiff of tequila evoking the memory of a hangover so violent it taught you the meaning of projectile vomiting.

The plague of “influencer culture” on the beauty blogging sphere provides both a pressure to have a very polished, high production value style especially on Instagram, while also stripping away individuality and authenticity, like the social media equivalent of the Stepford Wives.  (See @Insta_Repeat, and just imagine that in a beauty product form.)

Having a unique voice, good research, thorough testing, or your own style pales in comparison to mastering the perfect flat lay, with carefully-yet-carelessly glimpsed trappings of a successful life, usually adorable succulents in a monochrome white setting with a few tasteful mixed metal accents thrown in. Or, alternatively, whatever Glossier is doing these days.

Where I think K-Beauty is going in the next decade if it lasts

Honestly, I’m not sure whether there’s anywhere to go, other than further dispersal into mainstream beauty until it becomes just another option in the cosmetics aisle.

And I’m not sure that’s a bad thing, either; K-Beauty has had some really dodgy marketing in the past, leaning heavily on Orientalism, so the idea of it being viewed in the same way as, say, French beauty, where it has its own style but is still commonplace, is a perfect middle ground.

As Fanserviced-b put it: “K-Beauty isn’t punk anymore” and we’re almost at the KidzBop-version levels of saturation. It seems that most mainstream beauty users are chasing the all-in-one simplicity of the VSCO girl’s skincare routine. (Even though I still don’t like the spork approach. Please just give me two things that work really well, rather than one thing that does two jobs badly.)

The 2010’s were definitely the decade of K-Beauty, but I think that heyday has come to an end. There are still great products out there to be tried and reviewed, and I’ll be doing just that, but I think the golden age of new discoveries and exciting advancements is fading into a twilight glow, like office-appropriate highlighter. Just with better skin, and really great sunscreen. I’ll need it; I have a lot of hiking to do.

The view from a Vancouver off-leash dog hiking park
If this is the winter view, I can only imagine how beautiful this park view will be come spring.

Have you ever been upended into someone else’s dream life? Or do you have thoughts on whether K-Beauty is still on the rise, or on the wane?

Have something you’d like to share with me in general?  Snap a pic and tag me on Instagram at @snowwhiteandtheasianpear because I’d love to see it!

All the best,

Here comes Zara Makeup!!

by Lina Clémence June 28, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

November 13, 2021

I remember once upon a time when I got excited when a high street fashion label launched its own makeup line.  That must have been at least 20 years ago, and it was unfortunately a disappointing experience.  So it was both with genuine curiosity as well as apprehension that I dipped into the new Zara beauty collection.  The assymmetrical and minimalistic chic design definitely gave a cool vibe that is consistent with the fashionable brand.  I was pleasantly surprised by the heft and luxurious packaging, which made me even more intrigued.

For its eponymous beauty creation, Zara has teamed up with British makeup artist Diane Kendal, who has worked on some of the world’s most prestigious runways.  Zara beauty boasts a comprehensive range of products that champions inclusivity, and is formulated to be clean and vegan, and cruelty-free.  The packaging is refillable as well.  I tested out a small sample of items, and here are some swatches as well as personal thoughts.

Zara Eye Shadow Palette Til Dawn

Starting with the eyes, Zara’s eyeshadow palettes are magnetized and refillable, so you can customize your own palette or refill specific shades when they run out.  Each palette houses 6 shades, and there are 4 preset palettes to get you started.  The one that I have here is shade 003 Til Dawn and features warm earthy tones.

Zara Eye Shadow Palette Til Dawn swatches

I was blown away by how incredibly smooth and finely milled the powders were.  The pigmentation is excellent and I did not experience any fall-out nor fading of the shades.  They blend beautifully, and are as good as (if not better than) all other luxury makeup brands that I have tried.  This palette Til Dawn was such a breeze to use, that even though I have not worn makeup for almost 2 years now, I could still easily create a lovely look in under 5 minutes!  Composition of the palette was thoughtfully designed, allowing for a range of occasions, from everyday office to special dinners.

Zara Face Palette Elysian Glow

The face palettes are interesting as well, packing a blush – highlighter – contour in a handy pocket-friendly palette.  Similar to the eyeshadow palettes, the face palettes are refillable as customizable as well.  There are 3 pre-mixed palettes if you are undecided, and the one shown here is 007 Elysian Glow which is a lightly warm toned palette perfect for bringing some glow to my skin.

There is quite a bit of frost to these shades, even the blush has some metallic shimmers, so I suggest applying Elysian Glow with a light hand.  The blush shade itself is a gorgeous peach that is subtle and glowy, perfect for everyday wear.  Personally, I prefer my contour less glowy, so I struggled with the bright bronze shade here.  Regardless, Zara nailed it with the texture and longevity of these face powders.

Zara lip color

There is a HUGE range of lip color options available instore and online, I have just a fistful here to show you.  But the packaging is spot on for me, and I love that the lipsticks can be popped in and out, so I can change them up.  Sometimes refillable lipsticks don’t come with it’s own cap so you can’t take them out of the casings, but these Zara ones do, so you can rotate your lip color with just 1 casing!

Zara lipstick swatches

I had the opportunity to try out a couple of the Ultimate Matte lipsticks, a Cult Satin and a Tinted Balm; they are swatched above so you can take a look at the finish and pigmentation.  Every swatch is a single swipe, and I was so surprised by the “tinted balm” because it looks like a full-on lipstick!  I’m not usually a big fan of matte lipsticks, but these Zara Ultimate Mattes are creamy, did not dry out my lips, and they hug the curves of the lips for an elegant finish.  The Cult Satin is probably my favorite, and despite the shiny finish, it had good longevity as well.

Zara beauty makeup look

Here is a quick 10min makeup look featuring some of the pieces swatched above.  I must say, the picture failed to capture the lovely shimmers in the eyeshadow.  But the colors are very flattering even on 40+ year old me!  As you can expect from Zara, nothing is priced over SGD50, so it is very affordable and truly excellent quality.

Apart from what I’ve shown, there are also nail polishes and many many more lip color options to suit your lifestyle and preference.  So if you have not already checked out Zara beauty, I highly recommend you do so!

This post featured products that were generously provided for my consideration.  Regardless, all opinions expressed here are my own honest, unbiased views.

To my wonderful girl

by Lina Clémence June 27, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

02/07/23 I am sitting up in bed with my feet raised up. My feet and ankles are slightly swollen. This is my first brush with pregnancy bloat.

I just finished watching the Pamela Anderson documentary on Netflix while your dad is watching his usual Nazi documentaries in the living room.

Feeling sorry for myself and also a bit worried and paranoid about my bloated feet. I hope it’s nothing serious. I hope you are ok inside me. I hope to God I didn’t mess anything up.

I wanted to write to you incase anything were to happen to me and we never get to meet in this lifetime.

I want you to know how much I love you. I hope you grow up to be a happy and loving person who sees the goodness in others and becomes a light and blessing to others. I want so many good things for you but most of all I hope you live a life of your own choosing, no matter what that may be. I hope you will be brave enough to never give up on your dreams and to live true and honest to your soul.

May you never hide yourself and dull your shine to please other people. Listen to your inner self and have courage to follow your own convictions and live an honest and honorable life.

You are wanted, needed and unconditionally loved. I am so happy and blessed to be your mom and I cannot wait to meet you and hold you in my arms.

Love <3

GRWM Cosmetics Velvet Setting Powder Review Swatches

by Lina Clémence June 26, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

GRWM Cosmetics Velvet Setting Powder Review is finally here! Not a fan of powders lately because we are currently enjoying colder weather and so I’m usually wearing dewy finish skin products but I have picked up working out again and so must find a powder that I can wear while exercising while giving me enough coverage and yes, this powder from GRWM Cosmetics does deliver!

You can buy this directly from the official store of GRWM Cosmetics HERE and if you are lucky, it will be discounted too!

What is the GRWM Cosmetics Velvet Setting Powder?

It may be used alone to level out the skin tone or as a setting powder to offer a little more coverage to sheerer liquid bases. GRWM Cosmetics Velvet Setting Powder is a for-all-skin-types powder with light to medium coverage. Squalane, Kaoline, and Calamine are ingredients in the vegan formula that calm, hydrate, and mattify the skin. It is available in several shades so, wow!

By the way, I only have the 3 shades for fair skin, Buff, Linen, and Shell. They differ in their undertones.

Price: 549 pesos per 10 grams

Where to buy: You can buy in Shopee HERE if you want to avail of brand promos. The brand doesn’t have a physical store as of now but maybe soon!

I love the top part of the packaging. The bottom part, unfortunately, is a magnet for smudges.

I’m a sucker for details and like that the expiration is clearly marked.

Here are the swatches of the lightest shades for fair skin. As you can see, they made sure to cater to various undertones.

GRWM Cosmetics Velvet Setting Powder Review Summary

The claims are real:

Coverage can range from sheer to high medium, and I am glad that it is definitely buildable. I achieved high medium coverage when I layered on top of tinted moisturizer and also when I used a layer of wet application on top of powder form. The product looks even better at the 3-6 hour mark. Can get a bit cakey if you forget to blot before reapplication so be sure to blot. In my case, blotting is often enough to not need a new layer.

My other thoughts and observations:

  • I wish they offer refills. Packaging is so nice and its a pity having to throw it away huhu
  • The powder is truly smooth and can blur out pores/skin.
  • No strong scents. Thank you GRWM Cosmetics!
  • Love that this is paraben-free, vegan, and cruelty-free.
  • Can last 3-5 hours before seeing visible oil on oily skin.

Here is a comparison of right side with powder and left side without. LINEN is a perfect match for me, yay!

Below is 3 hours after application, Stil looking fresh after blotting.

Final verdict (MARCH 2023)

It is challenging to rate powders in my opinion because it has to be worn under very different settings to truly gauge their prowess. I say my current rate is 4/5 because I really like the velvety finish this powder gives me. Oil control is also decent even during hot months. I will probably update this around May 2023 for when summer is truly back!

Price: 549 pesos per 10 grams

Where to buy: You can buy in Shopee HERE (with discounts) if you want to avail of brand promos. The brand doesn’t have a physical store as of now but maybe soon!
