Spring Styles 2025 | Maple Holistics

by Lina Clémence August 3, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Introduction

Spring is the season of renewal and new life, as flowers bloom all around us and mother nature wakes up from her Winter sleep. This makes it the perfect season for change and new looks. There is no better reason to spruce up your beauty routine or introduce a new hairstyle than the change of the season. It’s time to embrace spring styles, from vibrant hair colors and styles, to nail shapes and art, let’s take a look at all the hair and nail trends that sing Springtime.

Haircare

As the days get longer and the weather gets warmer, the onset of spring is the perfect time to change up your hair style and routine to suit your surroundings. From accessories to elevate your look, to trending cuts and matching colors, changing up your hair care game can help keep you looking slick and stylish this Spring.

Embrace Spring Styles with a new haircut.

Trending Haircuts This Spring

There are few better ways to embrace the new season’s beauty than with a new hair style. Whether you’re looking to add layers and texture, opt for a daring chop or to hit refresh on your current style, these are our top three trending picks for haircuts that complement the beauty of Spring.

1. The Return of the Bob

Over the past couple of years we’ve seen the return of short haircuts, and the bob in particular seems to be leading the line. The great thing about this classic look is that it can be tailored and textured to suit your individual preferences, all while giving off a stylish, elegant and chic look. You can choose to cut your hair at chin-length or opt for a longer bob, depending on your face shape. The bob offers a modern look and only requires minimal maintenance.

2. Curtain Bangs

Making the decision to switch to full bangs can be a daunting one, and although it’s a great look, curtain bangs offer a suitable alternative for those not wanting to completely change their hair style. Curtain bangs help to frame the face and highlight it’s natural features and are a stylish ans subtle way to add texture and dimension to your look. The style works on both short and long hair, making it an enticing choice for Spring.

3. Soft Curls

Nothing gives off a laid back spring vibe better than textured and tousled curls that seem to flow effortlessly. Soft curls create the appearance of beachy waves which has become a popular look over the warmer months of the year. They can add volume and movement to your hair, and can easily be achieved with a curling iron or by allowing your hair to air dry naturally. We recommend using a sea salt spray to enhance your curls, without having to add too much product.

Bloom This Spring With Vibrant Hair Colors

Spring offers the opportunity to embrace vibrant shades and hues, and to experiment with new colors that can make a bold statement. Embrace the colors of spring and stand out of the crowd with our top 3 picks for the new season.

1. Soft Pastels

Pastel pinks, minty green and lavender hues are all making a splash this Spring. These vibrant shades complement the blooms of spring perfectly and can help add a unique, dreamy touch to your locks. The great thing about soft pastel colors is that they can be introduced as highlights or streaks, ensuring you can still show off some color, without having to fully dye your hair.

2. Earthy Neutrals

If you’re not a fan of bright colors and prefer to sport a more natural look, then earthy neutrals like soft browns and warm beiges are perfect for Spring. When choosing an earthy color for your hair, it’s important to opt for a shade that matches your skin tone and helps enhance your features. These tones can create a grounded and calming look, all while allowing you to feel refreshed and renewed.

Earthy natural colors can complement the spring season.

3. Bright Bold Shades

If you’re feeling brave this season, then you should consider choosing a bright, bold shade which can help reflect the image of adventure and individuality. The bright colors that are turning heads this season include electric blue, vibrant pinks and purples, as well as fiery reds which exude confidence and style. Once again, they can be tailored to suit your preferences, with highlights and streaks still showcasing your adventurous spirit without the need for fully dyeing your hair.

Hair Accessories To Elevate Your Spring Look

When it comes to hair accessories, the options are endless. Accessories can help to completely transform your look without the need for transforming your current hairstyle or color. This Spring we chose our top 3 hair accessories from a  range of subtle and delicate accessories to bold, statement pieces.

There are so many hair accessories to choose from.

1. Silk Scrunchies

Not only do silk scrunchies help reduce frizz, breakage and damage, but they also allow you to secure and protect your hair without the hassle. They can be used in your hair to create both a laid-back look, or to add a touch of sophistication. Plus they come in a range of colors, sizes and patterns so they can be tailored to match your preferences perfectly.

2. Colorful Barettes

These sleek, metallic clips are making a major comeback in 2025, most likely due to their ability to add versatility and elegance to your current hair style. Whether you’re adding them to a half-up, half-down look or securing a section of hair, colorful barrettes will bring an extra element of fun to your spring style.

3. Floral Hairclips

These are an unavoidable hair accessory for our flower lovers this Spring. Frankly, there are few better ways to celebrate spring’s blooms than by adding a floral hairclip to your updo. If you’re looking to add a floral hairclip to your look, you can choose from subtle daisies to whimsically oversized flowers depending on your style. They are the perfect complement of the season and are becoming exponentially popular.

Nails

Styling your nails to match the new season can be a great way to embrace the blooms of springtime and highlight your unique personality. Whether you’re a minimalist or someone who enjoys bold beauty statements, your nails also deserve their place in the limelight this Spring.

Embrace the season with a new shade of color for your nails.

Trending Springtime Nail Art

Tending your nails can be a form of self-care, and you can even take this further by adding your own unique artistic flare with nail art. From modern looks, to glamorous 3D nail art, to smooth metallic finishes, the sky is the limit when it comes to painting your nails.

1. Chrome and Metallic Finishes

Sleek and modern, chrome and metallic finishes are on the rise in 2025. Popular colors include silvers and golds, which trap the light and reflect it back for a beautiful shine and glamorous look. The shiny appearance helps create a sense of high-fashion whether you’re on a casual outing or getting dolled-up for a special occasion. You can choose to go for a full chrome or metallic finish, or simply add accents to your nails depending on your preferences.

2. 3D Nail Art

In the world of nail care, 3D nail art may seem a little out there, but it’s actually a great way to highlight your personality. You can add floral accentuations or add intricate geometric patterns that are perfect for complementing the beauty of Spring. While these nails require a little extra time and care to perfect, the end result is totally worth it. These miniature designs can add depth, texture and a sense of creative accomplishment to your Spring look.

3D nail art.

3. Velvet Glass Nails

Both trendy and sophisticated, using a velvet nail polish can help create a matte-like finish that is bold and elegant. The velvet look can give your nails a soft look that is not too harsh on the eyes, yet still showcases a radiant shine. Whether you choose deep, moody tones for a dramatic spring vibe or pastel hues for a soft, romantic look. This technique can also be customized with nail art, like fine lines or geometric accents, to give your nails a personalized, artistic touch.

Nail Care In The Season of Blooms

Much like your skin, your nails may require care that is specific to the current season, and the Spring season is no different. By implementing the following tips, you’ll be able to keep your nails in excellent shape and ensure that they stay elegant and beautiful.

1. Keep Your Nails Hydrated

While Winter is the worst month in terms of low-humidity, Spring also lacks moisture in the air, which can leave your nails feeling dry and brittle. This makes them more exposed to splitting and breakage. Keep your nails hydrated by regularly using a cuticle oil, or applying a hand cream to your skincare regimen in order to keep your nails strong and healthy.

2. Beware of The Sun’s UV Rays

Woman running in the sunlight

The sun can wreak havoc on your skin and nails.

The sun wreaks havoc on our hair and skin, but the fact is that it can do the same to our nails. Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause your nails to turn a yellowish-color, and also lead to brittle nails. The best way to avoid this is to apply a UV protectant to your nails once you’ve applied your preferred nail polish or gel. Finally, apply sunscreen to your nails and hands to protect them and ensure they stay radiant all Spring long.

3. Enrich Your Diet for Nail Care

The best way to protect your nails is to eat a nutrient-rich diet and give your nails the ingredients needed to flourish from the inside-out. Biotin, found in foods like eggs, nuts, and whole grains, is particularly known for strengthening nails and preventing breakage. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish like salmon, can help keep your nails hydrated and glossy. By focusing on a nutritious diet, you can give your nails the best foundation for optimal beauty.

Conclusion

Spring is all about embracing change, and there’s no better time to refresh your beauty routine than now. From stunning haircuts to vibrant hair colors, soft curls, and stylish accessories, there are endless ways to transform your look and celebrate the season with trending spring styles. The same goes for your nails, whether you’re rocking bold metallics, intricate 3D art, or sophisticated velvet glass nails, this season offers the perfect opportunity to express your creativity. With these fresh, stylish ideas, you’re ready to bloom this season and showcase your unique personality with confidence.

Photo Diary – Let’s talk beauty

by Lina Clémence August 1, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Back in 2020 / 2021 I really fell back in love with Cornwall, before that I thought I was over living here, it felt too remote (it still does at times), and I was yearning for city life. Being unable to leave the county for so long made us appreciate what we have right on our doorstep. We made the most of Cornwall being quiet (again) by exploring the local area and getting out walking. I noticed throughout 2021/2022 that I was going out less and less, to a point where I was avoiding leaving the house. So I made a pact with myself that, even if it was just a short walk around my neighbourhood, that I would try to get out as often as I could. Not setting any set rules or even committing to going out daily, just that I would try very hard to leave the house as regularly as I could.

Photography gave me that reason to go out, I had forgotten how much I loved taking pictures, and being stuck at home had taken away the joy for me, but on my walks I started to take my camera with me, and it worked, I stayed out longer than I thought I would, and I began to appreciate my local area.

The photos in this post were taken on my journey to better mental health. Although as I write this in my mental health is not 100%, and I still find it hard some days to leave the house, but I know that I’m not alone in feeling like that. My camera is still my creative outlet, and I need to remember just to do my best and when the world starts to feel too busy those are the moments that I need to remember to slow down and not take in all the negative noise.

Some things that make me happy are, the Flamingo ice cream van at the top of Fistral beach in Newquay which has the best vegan raspberry ripple! I can’t resist, it is well worth a visit if you’re ever in the neighbourhood. Oh, & Sprout Health Food Shop has the cutest courtyard where you can have a coffee, and they serve amazing Vegan food. It is such a peaceful space, and it feels like you’re on the Amalfi Coast not Newquay.

The Lawn Club ManchesterI do pop up to Manchester to see family, It’s nice to have an excuse to leave the county and enjoy one of my favourite cities. We always try to visit a couple of times a year, we always squeeze in a trip in August, as we got married in Manchester 17 years ago (and lived there for many years). We love visiting all our favourite places and seeing how the city has changed in the last 20+ years.

It is a place that always gets my creative juices flowing, and I leave feeling energised and full of ideas. Although the drive up from Cornwall can be a trek, it is always well worth braving the M5/M6! Especially knowing that my favourite tea shop, Bird and Blend is there, as well as Fig & Sparrow ( the best Matcha Latte in Manchester!). I soak up all the hustle and bustle, visit every coffee shop, museum, and bar that I have time for. Then by the time I leave to head back to the quietness of Cornwall, I am ready for the peace and quiet (and a beach). Best of both worlds .

I think it is impossible to take a bad photo of Cornwall, its landscapes, pretty towns and villages and stunning coastline make for an endless subject. I never get bored with taking pictures of the same cottages, beaches, and coffee shops. But there is nothing like not being able to go further than your local area for discovering hidden gems that you might have overlooked before. Even after living here for 10 years, there are still so many places on my list that I have not visited yet, and this Summer I fully intend to tick some off. Cornwall has so many secret spots to swim, and also river swimming is popular, and I want to do more of both this year.

If you have any recommendations of things to do in Cornwall that are a little different or not to be missed. I would love to hear them.

The Comeback of Retro Accessories in Modern Fashion

by Lina Clémence July 31, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Accessories can be a means of injecting flair and personality into an otherwise straightforward wardrobe. In recent times, a certain kind of accessory has enjoyed a surge in popularity. Increasingly, we’re turning to retro items that evoke a certain time or place. But exactly what’s behind this trend, and how can we make the best of it?

Why Retro Accessories Are Trending Again

The right retro accessory can speak to a fondness for a particular point in time. If you grew up in the 70s, 80s, or 90s, then you might derive a sense of comfort and nostalgia from wearing accessories from those periods. Certain vintage styles resonate with modern movements, like the green movement. It’s also worth noting that retro accessories can be a source of interest and personality, quite apart from the things we might associate them with.

Iconic Retro Watches: Style That Stands the Test of Time

Classic watches from the ’60s and ’70s have a particular virtue: they’re established as high-quality and dependable. If the model in question has been worn by a famous name, like Sean Connery or Princess Diana, then it might command even more prestige and attention. The pre-owned watch market is packed with value, provided that you know where to look for it.

Statement Jewellery: Chunky Rings and Bold Earrings

In some cases, the styles and sensibilities of bygone years can work perfectly alongside those of today. You might think of the larger-than-life rings and earrings of the 70s and 80s, which can provide a pleasing contrast against twenty-first-century minimalism. You might go for a series of nostalgia-evoking bracelets or necklaces and pair them with something classic, like a little black dress.

Classic Sunglasses Styles That Never Go Out of Fashion

Some designs have transcended the eras they came from and gone on to be regarded as timeless classics. For example, the ‘Aviator’ sunglasses were originally designed in the 1930s as a means of protecting pilots’ eyes from any angle. Their appeal and functionality were such that they became widely adopted, not just by pilots, but by everyone.

The Rise of Retro Bags: Functional and Fashionable

Handbags have a tendency to change dramatically over the years. Several designs have established themselves as worthwhile, however. These include Louis Vuitton’s ‘Neverfull’ tote bag, the ‘Baguette’ by Fendi, and the Re-nylon by Prada. Each might form a key part of a modern wardrobe.

Incorporating Retro Accessories Without Overdoing It

It’s easy to go overboard when you’re working retro elements into your wardrobe. For a sense of balance, it’s a good idea to bring these elements in gradually and to stop before things go overboard. Don’t be afraid to cut your losses and sell (or return) an item that doesn’t quite work!

How to Use Willow Bark Extract for Acne-Prone and Sensitive Skin

by Lina Clémence July 30, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Willow bark extract has become a popular ingredient in skincare due to its many beneficial properties. It is known for its natural ability to exfoliate, soothe, and treat various skin conditions. It’s especially beneficial for those with acne-prone or sensitive skin. Here’s everything you need to know about willow bark extract and how it can enhance your skincare routine.

What Is Willow Bark Extract?

Willow bark extract is derived from the bark of the willow tree (Salix alba). It has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. The key active compound in willow bark is salicin. Salicin is chemically similar to salicylic acid, a common ingredient in acne treatment products. Because of this similarity, willow bark extract has natural exfoliating and anti-inflammatory properties that make it ideal for skincare.

Key Benefits of Willow Bark Extract in Skincare

Exfoliates the Skin Gently: Just like salicylic acid, willow bark extract has mild exfoliating properties. It helps to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, promoting a brighter complexion and preventing clogged pores. However, unlike harsher exfoliants, willow bark extract provides a gentler alternative, making it suitable for those with sensitive skin.

Reduces Acne and Breakouts: Thanks to its ability to exfoliate, willow bark extract helps prevent the buildup of dead skin cells that can clog pores and lead to acne. Moreover, its anti-inflammatory properties help calm the skin, reducing the redness and swelling associated with breakouts. Regular use of products containing willow bark extract can help maintain clearer, healthier skin.

Soothes Irritated Skin: Willow bark extract contains natural anti-inflammatory agents, making it highly effective at calming irritated or inflamed skin. Whether dealing with acne, rosacea, or general irritation, willow bark can help to reduce redness and swelling, giving the skin a more even tone and appearance.

Promotes Collagen Production: Some studies suggest that willow bark extract can help stimulate collagen production in the skin. Collagen is essential for maintaining the skin’s firmness and elasticity, so promoting its production can help improve the overall texture and appearance of the skin, reducing the visible signs of ageing like fine lines and wrinkles.

Improves Skin Tone and Texture: Regular use of willow bark extract can result in smoother, more even skin. By gently exfoliating the skin and promoting cell turnover it helps improve the texture of the skin and gives it a more youthful glow. The soothing properties also help calm any redness, contributing to a more even complexion.

How to Incorporate Willow Bark Extract Into Your Skincare Routine

Cleansers: Willow bark extract is often found in gentle exfoliating cleansers, which help remove dead skin cells while cleansing the skin. It’s an excellent option for those with acne-prone skin or sensitive skin who need a mild exfoliant without the harsh effects of physical scrubs.

Toners: Many toners contain willow bark extract as a key ingredient to provide an extra level of exfoliation and to balance the skin’s pH. These toners can help prepare the skin for serums and moisturisers by removing any leftover impurities and giving the skin a refreshed feeling.

Face Masks: Willow bark extract is also commonly used in facial masks, especially those targeted at acne or dull skin. These masks provide a deep treatment, helping to exfoliate, soothe, and nourish the skin. The soothing properties of willow bark can help calm irritated skin after a breakout or sun exposure.

Serums and Spot Treatments: For acne-prone skin, serums and spot treatments that contain willow bark extract can be a powerful tool. These products help to target individual blemishes, reduce inflammation, and prevent new breakouts from forming. They are typically applied after cleansing and before moisturising.

Moisturisers: Moisturisers enriched with willow bark extract can help keep the skin hydrated while providing the calming and exfoliating benefits of the ingredient. It’s an excellent choice for people with combination or oily skin, as it hydrates without clogging pores.

Who Can Benefit from Willow Bark Extract?

Acne-Prone Skin: Willow bark extract is especially beneficial for individuals with acne-prone skin. Its exfoliating properties help keep pores clear of debris, while its anti-inflammatory effects reduce redness and swelling associated with acne breakouts.

Sensitive Skin: Willow bark is a gentle alternative to stronger chemical exfoliants like salicylic acid. For individuals with sensitive skin, it can provide exfoliation and treatment without causing irritation or dryness. However, it’s always a good idea to patch-test products before applying them to the entire face.

Ageing Skin: Due to its potential to stimulate collagen production, willow bark extract can be useful in anti-ageing skincare routines. By improving the skin’s elasticity and texture it can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time.

Red, Inflamed Skin: The anti-inflammatory properties of willow bark extract make it an ideal ingredient for calming irritated or inflamed skin. It can help treat redness caused by conditions such as rosacea, sunburn, or general skin irritation.

Potential Side Effects and Considerations

While willow bark extract is generally considered safe for most skin types, it’s important to be aware of potential side effects, especially if you have sensitive skin or allergies to aspirin. Since willow bark contains salicin (a precursor to salicylic acid), it may cause irritation or dryness for some individuals. Always perform a patch test before introducing any new product to your routine, particularly if you have sensitive skin or allergies to aspirin.

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s advisable to consult with a dermatologist before using products containing willow bark extract, as it is derived from a plant related to aspirin.

What Happens When You Marry A Beauty Person?

by Lina Clémence July 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Richelle Marty, the COO of medical spa Plump, met her partner, Dom, in 2017 while she was trying to install infrared saunas at 11 Howard for a pop-up with HigherDose, her employer at the time. “I had no idea what I was doing or where I was going when I got there because the only time I ever went to 11 Howard was to go to The Blond,” she says. When she asked for help, Dom, then the hotel’s director of food and beverage, came to her rescue. “It wasn’t my job to make room keys, but I saw this beautiful woman standing around and I took my chance and offered to help,” he says. “Of course, I was hitting on her.” Eight years later, the couple is married and expecting their first baby—a little girl—at the end of July. How did they get here? Saunas, of course, blistered feet, and a whole lot of skincare and hair products. Naturally, we had to ask them all about it in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Keep reading below.

Richelle Marty:
I’m pretty sure I was the one who asked Dom to go on a date to Kiki’s because that was my favorite place in the whole world.

Dom Marty:
We walked from the hotel to the restaurant and my feet were killing me. This was back when I was trying to be fancy, so I was wearing slacks and a button-down shirt with the classic 2017 Oxfords and no socks combo. My feet were so blistered. But it was a match made in heaven because after Kiki’s, we kissed on the rooftop of an apartment building.

Richelle:
Some time later, I remember opening Dom’s bathroom mirror and being surprised that he had a product with 20-percent glycolic acid.

Dom:
She always brings this thing up. [Laughs] My friend had bought it for zits and gave it to me. I wasn’t using it regularly. All I knew were Stridex acne pads and Neutrogena when I first moved to New York. But my friend was using Kiehl’s and La Mer products, so I was introduced to those brands pretty quickly. I think men are especially comfortable with Kiehl’s because if you’re a single dude and you’re shopping to peacock yourself up, it’s a safe space. The stores have neon lights. [Laughs] And it’s much easier to walk into a Kiehl’s than a department store like Bloomingdale’s that has so many more brands and products. But honestly, I was experimenting with some weird stuff.

Richelle:
I would end up in the burn victim unit at the hospital if I used 20-percent glycolic acid on my face. So pretty early on, I introduced him to other products.

Dom:
When I went over to her apartment for the first time, she had so much stuff. She was like, ‘Here, have this and this and this.’ Suddenly, I had all of these oils. There was probably a time when I was far too greasy.

My soap game definitely changed, too. I was using Dove’s sensitive skin bar, which I would still be using if she hadn’t bought me Swedish Dream sea salt soap, the one with an anchor on the packaging. Now I like Soft Services’s buffing bar—I like that it’s gritty—and a beef tallow and honeysuckle bar from some farm in Nashville that Richelle picked up on vacation.

Richelle:
I also got him on Sofie Pavitt’s Clean Clean cleanser, which Elizabeth Grace Hand—who we both see for facials at Ställe Studios—introduced me to. He also likes Face Reality’s ultra gentle cleanser, a recommendation from a facialist I saw years and years ago.

Dom:
My skin can get dry pretty quickly—especially if I don’t put on moisturizer after cleansing—but I never have that problem with the Face Reality one.

Richelle:
And he loves May Lindstrom’s Blue Cocoon.

Dom:
It’s the best stuff. It keeps me moisturized but it doesn’t make me oily. And it lasts forever. Richelle gave me a tin of it in early October and I’m not even halfway through it because you need the tiniest little bit. It’s fantastic after I shave, too.

Richelle:
Dom was actually the one who introduced me to Augustinus Bader’s Rich Cream.

Dom:
I’m going to sound like such a bougie husband, but I’m a simpleton. It’s just that when we held events at the hotel, there were always leftover products.

When it comes to my body products, I do have to shout out our amazing oil.

Richelle:
My mom’s Indian, so she would only use Ayurvedic beauty products on me as a kid. Dom and I went to India to visit family maybe three or four years ago. It was his first time there and he was introduced to Ayurvedic skincare stores. There’s one called Forest Essentials where we found an amazing oil that’s a mix of a ton of different oils. If it were sold in the US, it would have a bunch of binders and fake stuff in it but it’s just so pure. You put it on after you workout or sweat or something.

Dom:
There’s so much beauty stuff in the world. We have a photo that we took at her apartment when we first met. You can see all sorts of things, like high-frequency glass wands, around. I was introduced to a new caliber of stuff as a result of who I got lucky to fall in love with. I started caring about myself more when I met Richelle, too. I was a cigarette smoker and I stopped. You just start taking care of yourself when you meet someone you love.

Richelle:
But he doesn’t use sunscreen.

Dom:
I don’t think I need one. I’ve never burned. But I’ll commit to sunscreen as a result of prolonging my longevity and my wife’s happiness—and so I don’t turn into a baseball glove.

Richelle:
I’ll have him use Ultra Violette’s Supreme Screen SPF 50+. I became addicted to it after someone [Editor’s note, that someone is Daise] told us to pick it up in London. I later had another friend go on vacation in Berlin and I asked him to bring back bottles for me.

But credit where credit is due: Dom was the one who taught me how to take care of my hair.

Dom:
She had—and has—great hair.

Richelle:
But I wasn’t using any products. My hair is big and curly and I would just let it be, but it would get so dry. I also hated sleeping with products in my hair because it looked disgusting the next day.

Dom:
I was using Moroccanoil’s leave-in styling cream when I met her, which is what I gave her. Styling cream is better than gel, I think, because it doesn’t leave your hair crunchy or super shiny. I almost think you need to wear a tux to pull off hair gel.

Richelle:
The Moroccanoil one smells so good. He taught me to put it on damp hair. I was probably using half of his inventory because he had the full line of products. Then he had phases with Oribe and Kérastase, so I started using those, too. More recently, we use Rôz Foundation shampoo and conditioner, which we learned about from Reagan Baker at House of Reagan.

Dom:
And we’ve landed on Paul Mitchell’s original leave-in-conditioner. I don’t know what’s in it but it makes your hair so good. But we both luckily have good hair genes. Our little baby girl’s going to have big, dark, curly hair.

Richelle:
I’m due at the end of July. Dom will be the one to figure out her routine.

Dom:
If I can get TikTok famous and quit my job because of my little daughter’s hair, I’ll do it all day.

Reduce Facial Bloating: 7 Foods To Avoid For a Slimmer Face

by Lina Clémence July 27, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

A majority of women complain that they wake up with facial bloating and then walking around with a puffy face affects their appearance and self-esteem. Women often feel the pressure to maintain a certain standard of beauty, and facial bloating can make them feel less confident about their appearance. Beyond cosmetic concerns, facial bloating can also be physically uncomfortable, causing sensations of heaviness or tightness in the face. But did you know a lot of foods in your daily diet can lead to facial bloating. In this article, read about 7 foods to avoid for a slimmer face.

Foods To Avoid For a Slimmer Face

What is Facial Bloating?

Facial bloating refers to swelling or puffiness in the face, typically caused by fluid retention. It can make the face appear swollen, particularly around the cheeks, eyes, and jawline. Common causes of facial bloating include excessive salt intake, dehydration, hormonal changes, allergies, sinus issues, alcohol consumption, and certain medical conditions like kidney or thyroid problems. Temporary facial bloating often resolves on its own or with simple remedies like drinking more water, reducing salt intake, and getting enough sleep. However, persistent or severe facial bloating may require medical attention to address the underlying cause. Additionally, certain foods can trigger excessive bloating on the face, and we have listed some of the foods to avoid below for a slimmer face:

1. Sugar:

Consuming sugary foods and beverages can lead to blood sugar spikes, triggering the release of insulin. Insulin helps cells absorb glucose from the bloodstream, but excess insulin can also cause the body to retain sodium and water, leading to fluid retention and bloating, including in the face. Moreover, sugary foods often contain high levels of refined carbohydrates, which can cause fluctuations in blood sugar levels and promote inflammation in the body. Inflammation can disrupt the balance of fluids in tissues, leading to swelling and puffiness, including in the face. Sugary foods and drinks can also contribute to the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers in the skin through a process called glycation. This can weaken the skin’s structure and elasticity, leading to sagging and puffiness in the face. Overall, reducing sugar intake can help minimize facial bloating by stabilizing blood sugar levels, reducing inflammation, promoting hydration, and preserving skin health.

3. Refined Carbs:

When you consume refined carbs like white bread, pasta, and sugary snacks, they cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels. This spike triggers the release of insulin, a hormone that helps cells absorb glucose from the bloodstream. However, excessive insulin can also lead to the retention of sodium and water in the body, resulting in fluid retention and bloating, including in the face. Refined carbs can also cause gassiness and other digestive issues, hich can exacerbate bloating in the abdomen and may indirectly contribute to facial bloating as well.

3. Fried Foods:

Fried foods are often high in unhealthy fats, particularly trans fats and saturated fats, which can lead to inflammation in the body. This inflammation can disrupt the balance of fluids in tissues, leading to swelling and puffiness, including in the face. Additionally, fried foods such as French fries can be high in sodium, either from added salt during cooking or from processed ingredients used in frying. Excess sodium intake can lead to water retention in the body, causing bloating and puffiness, including in the face. Also read: “5 Real Reasons you are Craving French Fries!”

4. Salad Dressing:

Many commercial salad dressings contain high levels of sodium, often in the form of added salt or sodium-containing preservatives. As we all know by now, excessive sodium intake can lead to water retention in the body, causing bloating and puffiness of the face and body. Additionally, store-bought salad dressings may contain added sugars or refined carbohydrates to enhance flavor, which can also cause water retention. Do you know certain ingredients commonly found in store-bought salad dressings, such as dairy products or gluten-containing grains, may trigger food sensitivities or intolerances in some people, which may exacerbate facial bloating.

5. Fast Food Joint Sandwiches:

Do you know sandwiches from most fast-food joints may contain high levels of sodium, both from added salt and from processed ingredients such as cured meats, cheese, and other condiments. Excessive sodium intake can lead to water retention in the body, causing bloating and puffiness. Additionally, fast food sandwiches are typically made with refined carbohydrates such as white bread or burger buns. As mentioned above, refined carbs lead to sharp insulin spike, fluid retention, and bloating. Also read: “17 Foods that Cause Bloating and How to Prevent Gassiness.”

6. Processed Meats:

Processed meats like salami, bacon, and sausages can contribute to facial bloating due to their high sodium level as salt is used in their processing and preservation. Excessive sodium intake can lead to water retention in the body, causing bloating and puffiness, including in the face. Processed meats may typically contain additives such as nitrates and nitrites, which are used to enhance flavor and prolong shelf life which can cause inflammation adn bloating.

7. Soy Sauce:

Soy sauce is a staple condiment in many Asian cuisines and is often used generously in cooking and as a dipping sauce. However, just one tablespoon of soy sauce can contain a significant amount of sodium, which can lead to water retention in the body. Excessive sodium disrupts the balance of fluids in tissues, causing them to hold on to more water than necessary, leading to bloating of the face and body.

Finally, do remember that alcohol can also lead to facial puffiness, so it’s crucial to limit your consumption.

Overall, to reduce facial bloating and puffiness, it’s important to adopt a holistic approach. Avoiding foods high in sodium, refined carbohydrates, and unhealthy fats, as mentioned earlier, can help minimize bloating. Additionally, prioritizing quality sleep and limiting alcohol consumption can further alleviate facial puffiness. Staying well-hydrated by drinking adequate water throughout the day is also key to reducing fluid retention and promoting a more refreshed appearance. By incorporating these lifestyle adjustments, you can effectively de-puff your face and achieve a less bloated look.

What it’s Like to go to a Hospital in Mexico. And What Medical Supplies to Bring With You on Your Trip.

by Lina Clémence July 26, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Spring Break 2024 we brought our 3 girls ages 11, 10, and 8 to Club Med in Cancun. We arrived a day later than scheduled due to a huge snow storm, then after a delayed flight, we arrived around 9:30 at night. We checked in, got a snack, and went straight to bed excited for the following day. When we woke up, we put on our bathing suits and headed to breakfast with plans to relax in the ocean all day. But as we walked only a few steps outside our room, my 11 year old lost her flip flop which was caught on the metal grate we were walking over. She quickly kicked her foot forward to get it back inside her shoe but the shoe stayed attached to the grate so her foot flung quickly forward against the sharp metal grate slicing it wide open. She immediately let out a scream knowing what just happened. We were all stunned to see blood spurt out everywhere. and I mean everywhere. It was clear that the cut was extremely deep and right away Mike and I looked at each other knowing that we were in a really bad situation. Not even knowing the layout of the resort yet, we went into the closest building we could find and asked for a first aid kit. They had nothing and weren’t really sure how to help us. I got a roll of paper towels from them and bunched it up handing it to my husband to apply pressure to help stop the bleeding.

From where we were sitting, we noticed that there was a man laying on the ground about across the walkway from us. His eyes were closed and he wasn’t moving. There were people gathered around him and they were using beach towels to give him some shade from the sun. We found out later he was an employee who fell from a bicycle hitting his head. After he was loaded into the ambulance the nurse who worked at the resort came over to us seeing we were in trouble and accessed the cut. She took one look at it and then looked at me and shook her head. “Stitches?” I said to her. She nodded.

Foot wrapped on a floatie in the ocean

She said she would call her friend who was a doctor at a private hospital and she had the office call us a cab. She said it was about 30 minutes away and they would be expecting us. We waited about 10 minutes for the cab to arrive and started our panicked drive. We kept the girls calm and talked about how modern Cancun was as we passed the resorts and went right into the city. Our driver showed us where his hospital would be should he need one, which was a public one that’s free to him and other Mexican citizens. We were heading to a private hospital where we would pay as people visiting the country. “It’s much nicer” he said.

We pulled up to the drop off area at the hotel. There were people there to greet us and one person at the front area who pointed us to another area down a hall to check in. We were one of 3 parties in the waiting area. I filled out forms which included just our basic information and where we were staying. We waited only a short time then we were called back. Only my daughter and 1 parent could go back so Mike waited with our other 2 girls as she and I went back to the dimly lit room.  The nurses station in the middle was filled with people sitting and scrolling on their phones also in near darkness. Nobody was wearing scrubs or badges or anything to identify them as medical staff. It looked like a common area in a college campus. All young people, all in jeans, shorts, and tee shirts.

2 women came in, one identified herself as a doctor and said the other girl was new and in training. Neither had badges on and the doctor was in her 20’s while the trainee looked about 19. They looked at my daughter’s foot and wanted to clean it first. They came back into the room with packaged gauze, a half open saline bottle and a refillable glass bottle with green fluid that looked and smelled like green dish soap. She began to open the gauze and grabbed the bottle. They wondered where would be best to do this knowing it would make a slight mess and she was sitting on a cloth sheet, not the paper we’re used to seeing on medical tables. They pulled up a hazardous waste open trash can under her foot and rested her foot against it. I told her to scoot back so her foot didn’t touch it. Then the assistant who was very clearly not trained in anything medical, started to open the gauze and put the saline on it without gloves. My heart sank. The doctor’s english was about 60% while the assistant didn’t know any english. I asked her to please put gloves on which were on the counter. They very clearly didn’t like the suggestion. The assistant added the green soap onto the soaked gauze and she started to clean the wound. They said there was a lot of sand in it and she did a very thorough job of making sure there wasn’t anything left in the wound which had stopped bleeding but was still sliced open. She agreed she would definitely need stitches and they both left the room.

The assistant returned and said we were free to go. With my phone not working, I was left to use my rusty Spanish to ask about stitches and the antibiotic the doctor also recommended. It was such a deep slice that I knew leaving it open over the course of the next few days would be a really bad idea leading to an infection and definitely not healing well. I asked if I could just make sure I was clear with the doctor but the assistant said she wouldn’t be returning. I asked if we would be receiving the prescription and she said no. I then asked if I could take a few waterproof bandages and some dermabond with me and she was very unsure. She left and returned with 2 small vials of dermabond and 3 waterproof bandages and the ‘prescription’ from the doctor which was a handwritten list of things to do. Clean daily, apply a cleaning spray and cream that we didn’t receive, wash after beach or pool. We were free to go. My heart sank. We were out of options and I’m not sure why or what happened, but I just wanted to get out of there. I washed up and used the glue to try and close the wound as best I could and applied the bandage over it so she could walk out of the hospital while keeping the wound closed.

We walked back through the dark hallway, past the row of people still on their phones, our doctor included, through the doors into the waiting area to check out. Mike and the girls had a cab waiting for us and I approached the window to pay. She told me in pesos first which had me very confused but I knew it was high. 16,479.24. I asked for the number in dollars and she told me it was $984.22. I was stunned. I asked what made it so high, she said the Dermabond and bandaid were the bulk of the charge which made up $10,930 of the $16,000.

The nurse back at the resort was surprised that we didn’t receive stitches and told us it was best not to get her foot in the ocean or pool. I made sure the dermabond was applied in layers, then the waterproof bandage, then we got saran wrap from the kitchen so she could hang in the ocean in a floatie which ended up being a lot of fun and fine with her. The cut was painful and hard to walk on especially with how much walking we did, but she was a trooper and didn’t complain.

While the cut took a very long time to heal, it eventually did and without infection. Which I brought with us saved the day since it was exactly what we needed.

What I Packed With Us

Neosporin. Both the resort and hospital did not have this so I was really happy we did. We ended up using this on my other two girls for just random cuts and scrapes that kids get as well.

Alcohol cleansing wipes. Used all of these as well for cuts and scrapes and for my oldest’s wound.

Iodine. I have an THIS spray that I use on most cuts and scrapes before bandaging.

Bandaids. These were also on short supply, even in the infirmary when I asked for one.I’d get waterproof ones as well just in case.

Antibiotics. It was actually the same one the doctor at the hospital recommended then didn’t fill. It was originally prescribed for my same daughter for a skin infection she had last summer that cleared up quickly. We just had a few extra and thankfully this is what we ended up using.

I also brought an antibiotic that would be for Mike or myself should we have needed it. I remember reading THIS  report last year when it came out about how Mexican pharmacies are selling fentinol-laced prescriptions so I knew that going to a pharmacy wouldn’t be an option for any of us.

Rescue inhaler. My girls use a rescue inhaler sometimes when they’re sick. I didn’t want to chance not being without it and thankfully we didn’t need it.

Rescue meds for my youngest. She has a steroid that she uses a few times a year when she gets croup. Last time was at Christmas when she woke in the night gasping for air. I didn’t want to be in that situation there so I brought it with us.

Zofran. Just for if anyone had any vomiting. Again, luckily we didn’t need it.

Dramamine. We always travel with this, but it was nice to have on hand.

Motrin. We used this just once for when one of my girls had a headache.

Advil. Just in case for us but never used it.

It sounds like a lot, but I was so thankful we had it all on hand. It only took up a medium sized cosmetics bag and a pill organizer (LOVE this one) so it wasn’t any trouble to pack and gave me a huge peace of mind.

I know this was very minor, but it was scary and eye-opening for sure. After it happened I had a hard time sleeping just wondering what would happen if we really had an actual emergency. I just wanted to pass along this info so you understand what could happen at a hospital. Again, there could be so many scenarios for different doctors but this was just our overall experience.

I also posted about our trip and how wonderful Club Med was and I would recommend it to friends curious about travel to Mexico with or without kids. Just pack smart and keep all scenarios in mind.

Coconut Oil for Stretch Marks + 13 More Beauty Uses

by Lina Clémence July 25, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

While coconut oil is most commonly considered a cooking oil, consisting of the fat pressed from the coconut, it’s also long been hailed for its moisturizing benefits for the skin and hair. I’ve initially started using it for my super dry skin, and I couldn’t say enough good things. It feels heavenly, and the light coconut scent makes me feel like I’m hanging out at a tropical beach.

It’s particularly beneficial for pregnant women. I have been religiously rubbing it over my ever-growing belly to prevent stretch marks (and help the old ones) when I was pregnant and I can say for sure that using coconut oil for stretch marks is effective! It also helps relieve some of that itching as the skin stretches. Scroll down for some more beauty benefits of coconut oil.
