7 Lessons Learnt from my 7 Year Loc Journey

by Lina Clémence June 1, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

1.4K

Hi everyone, my name is Char, founder of Locs Life! I started Locs Life over 7 years ago, and have had my locs for about just as long. Over that time, I have learned a lot about having locs. Below are some things I have learned along my locs journey.

Lessons Learnt from my 7 Year Loc Journey

1. Weakness Can Be Strengths

When I was a loose natural, I struggled so much with knots.

My hair loves to form single strand knots and fold on itself. That made it difficult to retain length and made styling very much not fun.

This attribute, however, lent super well to starting locs.

My locs formed quickly and retwisting has never been a problem. This thing that had been a source of frustration for many years turned into a strength for locs. It has been ironic in the best way possible.

2. Listen to Your Hair

Over the years, I have learned to listen to what my hair and scalp are telling me.

In the beginning of my journey, I was using a popular shampoo that I liked as a loose natural, and that I had heard worked for many people that were locd as well.

However, my locs felt a bit sticky after using it.

I decided to switch shampoos until I found something that worked for me. Similarly, I learned applying oils directly to my scalp does not work for me. It just made my scalp itchy until wash day!

I decided to listen to my scalp, and pull back on the products I used. Now my scalp feels healthier than ever.

3. Nothing is Perfect

We all know nothing or no one is perfect, but it can be difficult actually accepting it. Especially when it comes to ourselves.

I remember when I first started my locs journey, I did it with two strand twists, and not all the parts were even. Because of that, I redid multiple sections of my locs to the point where I basically restarted my locs journey. However, they still weren’t done in a perfectly neat grid pattern all throughout my head.

I agonized for months on whether I should just completely restart my locs journey to straighten out my loc parts. I started to think, “well what if I want to do a certain hairstyle and my loc parts are uneven!”

However, I realized two things: 1. I hardly do any of those styles anyway, and 2. Even if I do, I don’t need perfect loc parts for me to be happy with the style.

With that out the way, I started to become more and more comfortable with my locs.

4. Your Locs Journey is Yours Alone

Similarly, before I started my locs journey, I looked at a lot of loc growth journeys to try and get an idea of when my hair would get to my “ideal length.”

Spoiler alert, my locs did not grow as fast as I wanted them to.

In fact, my locs even went through a period where I was losing length! While there is nothing wrong with looking to the future, you set yourself up for disappointment if you peg yourself too rigidly to any timeline or ideal.

It has been really important for me to recognize that even though I like having a goal, I still need to remember that things don’t always go according to plan – and that’s okay.

5. Your Locs Are a Reflection of Your Strength

This may seem intense or dramatic, but bear with me.

I truly believe your locs are a reflection of yourself. Specifically, I believe that this includes strength and resilience for everyone that chose to start locs.

There are a lot of preconceived notions of loc wearers in the US.

Even if your friends and family are okay with you having locs, there are many documented cases of employers being overtly discriminatory.

Despite that, many of us continue to have locs. I know for myself I was wary of negative impacts at work. Not everyone in my life was supportive of my locs journey in the beginning, but at the end of the day I was doing it for myself, and not anyone else.

6. Your Locs Should Fit Your Lifestyle

One thing I didn’t necessarily plan for, but worked out in my journey was having my locs match my lifestyle.

I do not like spending too much time on my locs and I do not like spending time at the hair salon. It works for many people, but I knew it wouldn’t for me.

Thus, I knew I would handle the retwisting myself.

Moreover, the size of my locs are on the smaller side, but not too small. I am glad that I went with the size I did, because I know I personally could not handle the upkeep of sisterlocks or microlocs. While beautiful, there is a whole other level of time and dedication that must be spent to care for extra small locs.

7. Everything Changes

Probably the most important lesson I have learned having locs is that nothing is constant!

I have had favorite products discontinued, had locs thin, and I have had to just adjust to having longer locs in general. This has meant some setbacks, as well as a lot of research and learning. However, it truly has been a journey that I would not change.

I am looking forward to seeing what is next in my Locs Life hair journey!

Classy on the Run: Stocking Stuffers for Her

by Lina Clémence May 31, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

I don’t know how Christmas is already here, but yet here we are. These last few months have completely snuck up on me– and if Christmas has caught you by surprise, no fear, because many of these goodies can be picked up by this crazy new concept called “Offline shopping”. See, you go to the store, and then after paying leave with it right away! I know, a hilarious concept. My husband is nearly entirely reliant on Amazon Prime… but anyways, let’s get into it!

A quick note: Some items in this gift guide were gifted, and others purchased with my own money. Items with a * were gifted.

Stockings are my absolute favourite to give and receive.  There’s something so lovely about getting the perfect stocking: a whole bunch of little goodies hand-selected for you. A mix of wants, and needs, wrapped up in the cutest of all Christmas packaging!

Laline has just launched in Canada, and you can find them in store at the Eaton’s Centre (when I last walked by many things were 40% off!). You’ll see another favourite in my other gift guide, but here I wanted to focus on some of their mini products. In particular, their mini Dead Sea body lotion* and liquid bath salt* (perfect for those who don’t have a bath tub!). I also love their Monoi scent (it reminds me of my honeymoon in Bora Bora) and Violet Amber.

Mary Kay’s Mad About Masking* gift set ($30 CAD) contains four single-use masks, meaning there will be something for all skin types! Dewy Gal was my favourite of the bunch — but winter always gets my skin super dry so that should come as no surprise!
Their Ultrastay Lip Lacquers* ($47 CAD) took my by complete surprise. Containing a lip colour (cherry, rose, or plum), a lip sealer, and a remover, these remind me of (what I think was a Mary Kay) a product that my mom had back in the 90s that would seal in your lip colour. First, you apply the colour (I am obsessed with the red!). I couldn’t get over how awkward and uncomfortable it felt once it dried down. However, after I applied the sealer it was so comfortable, and totally transfer proof. To remove, just use the oil based remover and use a cotton round. I can’t wait to rock “Cherry” while I host Christmas dinner for my family! #HostessWithTheMostess
Amazon’s two day shipping never ceases to amaze me. And while I was only looking for 3 scrunchies, you can’t argue with the price of this 14 piece scrunchie set ($12.99 CAD). In a range of solid and floral wearable colours, such as navy, mustard, dusty pink, cream and grey (basically, Alanna colours), these look cute in my hair and are super functional. This could be a great gift to split up in a few stockings, or maybe even a gift exchange with friends. I wasn’t the first to hop back on the scrunchie train, but its here and I am loving it!

(Loving those cute bows that I accessorized these photos with? Dollarama. #BloggerSecrets).

(And that totally luxe flat lay background? One of those warm fuzzy blankets they convince you to buy at the cash at Indigo).

From left to right

Add some twinkle under the tree (or, err, in the stocking… which could be under the tree?) with this adorable Bomb Baby 2 Mini Lip Gloss and Highlighter* ($31 CAD) by Fenty. I love Fenty lipglosses partly because of how they look on the lips, but also partly for their massive doe-foot applicator!

I snagged this great little Benefit set for Black Friday for $20 (I think?). It contains a full-sized They’re Real mascara in black (worth $32) and Gimme Brow in Shade 3. Benefit Cosmetics holiday sets are always a great value: a mix of full size and deluxe mini products in their permeant collection at unbelievable deals.

Bite Beauty knows lip care — that’s why I bought three of these agave lip sets when they were on sale for $9 (regular price $27 CAD). I tossed two in my husband’s stocking because in the winter he is always asking me for a lip balm for his chapped lips. With a sweet-yet-neutral scent, this set contains a mini lip balm, a mini lip mask (which I often wear to sleep) and a mini night treatment. Since they are going through a reformulation process to make all of their products vegan, I was also able to nab a set of four of their mini lipsticks for $14 (regular $28 CAD). These rich hues are wearable all year long!
This summer MAC launched some fun scented mini Fix+, that you can still find at their stores and on Sephora’s website! I really enjoy Peony ($18 CAD). Some days I find myself doing my makeup at work (I keep a full makeup bag at my desk!) and this is the perfect addition to help it last all day long. And I mean, that smell…

Around the holidays I love burgundy and gold nails. Essie Nailed It?* (found at your local drugstore for about $10 CAD) is one of my favourites!

When I first smelled Céla’s Crème de la Crème* ($37 CAD) I couldn’t place the scent — only that it smelled warm and familiar. After much use I have determined that it is best described as a Terry’s Chocolate Orange, in the best possible way. This hand cream is perfect to keep at the office, and would make any mom, grandma, or young professional thrilled. I was first introduced to it by a colleague, and then I was hooked. You can pick that, or their Essential Balm* ($45 CAD) at their spa on King West, or their pop-up at Bayview Village (or online!). Maybe while you are in store, you would like to pick up a gift card for under the tree… (did I mention that this is a Canadian brand?)

I found these stunning Anthropologie Home wine stoppers at The Bay one evening on my way home from work and fell in love. The silver one is a penguin, and the gold is a swan! I wasn’t able to locate it on The Bay’s website, but nearly any of their products would be a wonderful gift! I managed to snag these on sale for less than $10 each.

I’ve also been busy shopping up a storm at Homesense looking for the perfect Christmas decor. I love this star, which would look jut as good on a tree as it would on your front door! This tree has been perfect on our coffee table (and we have angels and reindeer to match!). The star was $6.99 and the tree was $9.99 (for this size!). Feel free to gift Christmas decor… or just keep it for yourself 😉

Finally… deluxe mini products! Get these for free with your Sephora purchases, or in ipsy bags. Anything that isn’t perfect for you, set it aside for this time of year to gift to friends, put in stockings, or donate to those who need it more! I know I would be thrilled to get some Sephora minis in my stocking! Pro tip: start putting these away during the summer!

And there you have it, my stocking gift guide for her this year!

Merry Christmas & happy gifting!

Cartier Oud and Musc and Easy Ouds

by Lina Clémence May 31, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

I have a few friends to thank for the discovery of Cartier’s Oud and Musc. I’m not drawn to many oud perfumes, but after hearing many positive reviews from friends, a bag of discarded samples coincidentally made its way to me, and happened to have a few from Cartier’s oud in it. Oud and Vanilla seems to be the crowd favourite and is much easier to wear, but I finished my sample Oud and Musc and wasn’t done deconstructing it in my head. I had to get a bottle so I could wear it some more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

To me, this is everything I wanted the famed Muscs Kublai Khan to be. It’s animalic, a dirty barnyardy oud melding an animalic musk. A clean musk lies in the background and patchouli smoulders in the background. It’s easy to wear and even though it says “parfum” at the bottom of the bottle, the atomizer dispenses a fine luxurious mist that’s not overly potent. It feels more like an eau de toilette. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I’ve never understood how people could bear the animalic facets of oud until I smelled this line. It’s one where the wait is worth it because although it smells weird at first spray, the dry down has a cozy friendly warmth that reminds me of warm hugs, doggy fur, clean skin. Layer this with anything you want and make it your own, but wear it on skin to really experience the best of it.

I like it with Shalimar. ⠀⠀⠀⠀

Oud and Santal seems to be a popular one from this line too and it’s quite lovely.

5 Things I am Loving Right Now – Winter 2025

by Lina Clémence May 31, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

I never got around to doing a 2024 favourite things roundup, and now that winter is over, I feel like I should share one. The problem is that I haven’t been feeling motivated to write lately. I’m exhausted all the time, and with the little energy I have, I haven’t been able to be creative. On top of that, my skin is a real mess, so I’m not enjoying makeup or skincare right now, which is disappointing. This post should be an easy way to help me get back into the writing flow… hopefully.

1. Neutrogena Transparent Bar

I started using this for my new Vintage Vanity series, and I fell in love. It is a great, simple bar that gets the job done. You can read about its history and how I really enjoyed it here.

2. Belif Aqua Bomb PHA Exfoliating Toner Pads

Belif’s Aqua Bomb line is one of my favourite skincare lines. These pads are pretty self-explanatory; they are toner with PHA in a pad format.

I have a lot of acne popping up along my hairline and dry, flakey skin on my cheeks. These pads have been great for light exfoliation in those areas without irritating anything. The other toner ingredients are super hydrating.

3. Aquaphor Healing Balm Stick

This an absolutely massive stick of Aquphor, with 30% petroleum in it. Because it is a stick, it has different ingredients than the regular Aquaphor, such as avocado oil and wax. I fell in love with this stick because, for the last year, I have had peeling lips. It didn’t matter how often I applied balms to my lips; they were terrible. This cleared it up in a week.  I also use it on my cuticles and dry elbows as well as on top of my skincare for slugging when dog walking in the winter weather.

I do not believe it is sold in Canada. I had to get it in the USA. The exact same stick is also sold under their Baby Care banner.

4. Hypochlorous Acid

I think we all know how effective Tower 28’s SOS Spray is at eliminating unwanted skin issues while still being gentle on the skin. However, I’ve found a similar product that costs significantly less: Microcyn Skin Spray for pets. It’s priced at $29.99 for 240 ml and works just as well.

I used this spray at my previous job whenever a pet had issues like scratching their ears, developing hot spots, or any other irritated skin problems. I even started using it on myself for scratches and bruises, and it worked wonders. When Tower 28 gained popularity for its product, I felt vindicated, knowing that others finally recognized its effectiveness.

I picked up my bottle a few months ago when my dog, Bradley, was chewing on himself to calm and heal his skin. I recently used it on Sterling after he scratched his ear non-stop, making it red and scabby. After applying the spray the next day, everything looked much calmer. I mean, the fact it saved me a visit to the vet alone makes it worthy of a favourite spot.

Now, it’s become my favourite, not just for my pets but also because I’ve been struggling with acne that I can’t control. I started using the spray on my own skin whenever a pimple began to surface, and I noticed that it helped clear them up faster than when I didn’t use it.

5. Vitabath Original Spring Green Bath Gelee

Thinking of a number 5 was really hard. I spend a lot of time in the bath, so I went to have one and it came to me, Vitabath. I used up a small bottle in January and am now working on a bottle double the size. You need so little of it for a ton of bubbles and scent that will fill your whole floor.

They make any scents, but the green is the original and smells the best to me.

So there you go, five things I have loved this winter season. Now, let us hope the weather gets better, and I can spend some more time outside with less dry skin.

This week I’m (really) obsessed with… Briogeo Superfoods Acai + Passionfruit Lightweight Hydration Hair Mask!

by Lina Clémence May 31, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Anyone who knows me even a little knows I have a borderline unhealthy obsession with beauty products that smell like food – preferably fruit, because who wouldn’t want to smell like a tropical snack bar? I’m convinced the folks at Briogeo hacked into my brain, did a little aromatherapeutic mind-reading, whipped up the exact scent I’d lose my mind over and then bottled it in the new Superfoods Açaí + Passionfruit Lightweight Hydration Hair Mask. It’s like a smoothie for your hair – and yes, I’ve thought about tasting it. (No, I didn’t. Okay, maybe just once…)

Briogeo Superfoods Acai + Passionfruit Lightweight Hydration Hair Mask – 240ml – $53 – a lightweight, superfood-infused mask with a water-cream texture to deeply hydrate fine strands without sacrificing volume or weighing hair down and infused with a juicy, tropical, passionfruit-inspired scent (which is amazing!)

It’s perfect for fine and medium hair – be it straight, wavy or curly – to sort out dryness, frizz and add shine. The vegan formula contains a concentrated blend of phytonutrients that nourishes hair without sacrificing volume including: acai extract – to protect strands from environmental aggressors; passionfruit oil – to boost moisture and add shine; and hydration complex – to deeply hydrate parched hair.

Okay, I know I keep going on about how good this smells (and yes, you’re probably over it), but honestly  it smells so incredible that I wouldn’t even be mad if it didn’t work. I’d just walk around huffing my own hair like a weirdo. But plot twist – it actually works really well.

Now, I love a good hair mask, but most of them are so thick and moisturizing that they leave my fine hair looking less like a shampoo commercial and more like I lost a battle with an oil slick. This one, though – total game-changer! It’s got this light-as-air, water-cream texture that leaves my hair softer, smoother, shinier without even a hint of grease.

And the scent? Ohhh the scent… It’s described as sweet, slightly tart berries meeting fresh, crisp greens with a juicy, tropical finish – and honestly, that’s poetry. It’s like a fruity vacation in a jar. 10/10, no notes.

Available now at Sephora stores across Canada and online at sephora.ca.

– Lisamarie –

BTW, did I mention that it smells amazing?!

Travel itinerary: One week in Italy

by Lina Clémence May 30, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Only have one week left of annual leave and have your eye on Italy? Here’s how you can enjoy Tuscany, Umbria, and Rome in just a few days. One week in Italy is not the ideal travel itinerary – the more time, the better! But, it’s definitely still worth the trip, so here is the travel itinerary I followed when I was in your shoes.

I live in Edinburgh, in Scotland. We have direct flights to a few locations in Italy, mostly served by Ryanair, but they don’t run every day. In order to make the most of my trip, I booked a flight in to one airport, travelled around, and then flew out of a different city. It means two separate itineraries and trips, but I think it’s worth it to get to see more of the country.

One week in Italy travel itinerary: Pisa -> Florence -> Perugia -> Rome

Tips on travelling to and around Italy

My flight: EDI-PSA, FR3264, departing at 8:20AM, arriving 12pm

If you’re in Europe, Pisa is a great choice to fly into, or out of. There’s loads of Ryanair and Easyjet flights. The airport is easy to access from the city centre with a little monorail type train directly connecting the train station to the airport. It’s cheap and convenient, and the train station has a left luggage desk so you can enjoy the leaning tower unburdened by your bags!

We opted to just spend the day in Pisa, see the leaning tower have lunch, and then hop on a train to Florence. Trains are a fantastic way to travel around the country, and how we travel around to see as much of Italy as we can. This itinerary travels from Pisa, to Florence, to Perugia, to Rome. It uses only direct trains with less than three hour long journeys. The train between Pisa and Florence is less than an hour!

What to do in Florence

Florence is one of my favourite cities to visit. Forget one week in Italy, I could write a whole one week in Florence itinerary. Between the food, the views, the galleries, and the museums: there’s no shortage of things to do. While you’re here, make sure you visit some of the museums and galleries. If you only have a few days, I’d pick between the Palazzo Vecchio and Brunelleschi’s Duomo. Both have towers you can walk up to enjoy stunning views. But, one has a museum, the other has some stunning architecture and is one of the more famous Catholic churches. If you’re afraid of tight spaces, I’d recommend the Palazzo Vecchio! Plus, that way you get to see the Duomo from your viewpoint. That said, the Duomo does tend to be more of a “classic” tourist spot.

The Uffizi Gallery is the gallery to visit, but you have to book in advance and make some level of a plan for what you want to see because there’s no way to see it all in one day! I had my eye on Donatello’s David though, rather than Michelangelo’s. So, we headed to the Museo Nazionale del Bargello. If you’re a sculpture fan, this is the museum for you. Floors upon floors of sculptures in all varieties will greet you.

Other favourites of mine include Michelangelo’s Square at sunset, and the Ponte Vecchio with a gelato in hand. We lean into the tourist thing in Florence and spent a few evenings drinking in the square in front of the Palazzo Vecchio. The food is great everywhere in Florence, and this way we got to people-watch and enjoy the sculptures in the square too. One piece of advice I always follow is to pre-book one nice meal on your holiday so you know no matter what, you’re having a great meal. We booked at il Granaio, which serves classic Italian in a classy space off a little street. I’d definitely recommend!

List of tips:

  • Visit and climb to the top of the Duomo
  • Visit the Palazzo Vecchio Museum and climb its tower
  • Explore the Uffizi Gallery
  • Sculpture sightsee at the Museo Nazional del Bargello
  • Walk across the Ponte Vecchio
  • Walk to Michelangelo’s Square for sunset
  • Eat pizza at Gusto Leo (by Museo Nazional del Bargello)
  • Eat dinner at il Granaio
  • Find the small photo booth and take a series of photos – but you need coins and you will have to wait around 10 minutes for the machine to work its magic!

What to do in Perugia

With only one week in Italy it can be hard to find time in your itinerary to actually switch off and relax. Two days in Perugia in the middle of your holiday will do just that! This ancient Etruscan town is nestled on the top of a hill and is the perfect place to spend a few days just eating, drinking, and relaxing. There’s no shortage of restaurants or aperitivo spots, and if the drinks don’t help, the sunsets are sure to help your stress disappear.

In Perugia, you can enjoy the local museum, explore an Etruscan well, visit the factory of the famous chocolate makers ‘Baci’, and sit in the Giardini Carducci to watch the sun set. The hotel Sina Brufani has a stunning restaurant and bar located right next to the gardens. It’s a perfect spot for aperitifs before or after sunset. In the summer, Perugia is used to hosting many tourists, but in the winter it becomes a quieter, softer version of itself. Restaurants and tourist shops are still open, they’re just rather quiet. You’ll mostly run into students and people bustling about their usual day than you will run into tourists. It makes for a nice stop no matter what time of year!

List of Perugia tips

A close up of some of the architecture in Perugia
A view of a sunset over some hills in the distance
A view of one of the squares in Perugia's old town. It features coloured plaster and tiles.
The view from the garden at the top of Perugia

What to do in Rome

Really, a silly heading. What not to do in Rome?! The list of things to do is long. You’ll know which things you want to see most. My preferences are: the colosseum is quite cool to see, but book a guided tour and book in advance. Also, you can get really nice pictures with it from the Giardinetto del Monte Oppio, and nice spots for drinks with a view up there too. You’ll see plenty of Roman ruins while walking through Rome, so I don’t personally feel the need to pay to see them (though I have). The Trevi Fountain is overrun with tourists (myself included). My take is to get in, get a picture, and get out. It’s hard to stop and enjoy because tourists are there at all hours of the night these days.

My main piece of advice? Find some really nice restaurants. Italy has one of the highest percentages of people with Celiac disease, so if you’re gluten free, this is your time to shine.

List of Rome tips

  • Gluten free pizza at Pizza in Trevi (perfect for after visiting the nearby fountain!)
  • Guided tour of the Colosseum
  • Photos with the Colosseum at Giardinetto del Monte Oppio
  • Drinks at Volpe Pasini bistio italiano (or on Via Delle Terme di Tito) have nice views of the Colosseum
  • The usual tourist spots!

One week in Italy itinerary

Pisa, day 1: Arrive in Pisa! Get the airport tram to the train station, drop your luggage at the left luggage in the station. Then, head in to Pisa to see the leaning tower and eat some food. Once you’re satisfied, hop on the next train to Florence. Check in, and then head out to explore and get some drinks! We went to “touristy” spots in restaurants on the main squares and still enjoyed very nice food and wine at reasonable prices.

Florence, day 2: Start your morning with a walk to get your bearings and stop for a cappuccino and pastry. Visit the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, and stop in at Gusto Leo for lunch afterwards. Walk slowly over to the Palazzo Vecchio to enjoy some of the outdoor sculptures at Uffizi, before heading in to the Palazzo Vecchio to go up the tower. Afterwards, stop for gelato on your walk down the river to Michelangelo’s Square for sunset.

Florence, day 3: Up bright and early for a quick breakfast before you start your day at Uffizi Gallery! Spend as much time exploring as you can stomach before breaking for lunch. Afterwards, head over to the Duomo and don’t forget to have booked your tickets ahead of time! Take a walk over the Ponte Vecchio and have a look in all the different gioellerias before stopping for food. Dinner tonight at il Granaio would be a great way to top off a great trip to Florence.

Perugia, day 4: Travel to Perugia via train after breakfast. Don’t forget to grab a sandwich for the journey! You’ll enjoy some gorgeous views of Umbria along the ride. Once you arrive, hop on the cable car to get up into the city – otherwise you’ll be walking uphill for awhile! Check in, kick your feet up, and then head out for some aperitifs before sunset. Afterwards, walk over to Piazza IV Novembre and stop for dinner along the way.

Perugia, day 5: After breakfast, get your bearings with a guided tour of the city, or stop in the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria to explore the medieval artwork inside. Stop for lunch at one of the many little restaurants like Pasticceria Sandri, and then head over to the Etruscan Well to see a piece of history. Make sure you time your visit with one of their tours, they run hourly! Or, book ahead to visit the Baci Perugina factory and see how the chocolates are made. Make sure to hit up the gift shop before you leave, and have a chocolate for me! They’re my favourite. Dinner is at Enoteca di Perugia, a fantastic little wine bar in the old town.

Rome, day 6: Hop on an early train from Perugia to Rome. Make sure to grab snacks ahead of time, this is your longest train journey of the trip! When you arrive, you can safely tuck your bags away at Stow Your Bags by Termini Station, or leave them at your accommodation. Time to wander, and stop for food, and wander some more! Today would be a good day to visit the Trevi Fountain or the Spanish Steps. The nice thing about Rome is everything is super close to each other! In the afternoon, take a guided tour of the Colosseum, and then head over towards the Roman Forum and Pantheon.

Rome, day 7: Leave this day free to do anything you couldn’t do on day one in Rome, or use it to visit the Vatican City. Make sure to eat your fill of gelato and all levels of delicious Italian food before you leave!

Whatever you take from this itinerary, I hope you enjoy your week in Italy! The trip might feel short, but it will be mighty.

Powered by the planet: Four products from Herbivore Botanicals you need to try

by Lina Clémence May 30, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

I’ve been a real wellness kick lately.  Although I’ve always been one to workout a lot (I do some form of exercise five days a week and move everyday), I’ve been really focusing on nutrition and consuming and using better-for-you products.  This comes to skincare too.

Although I do love so many skincare brands, I have been leaning towards more natural products.  One brand that I’ve been intrigued about for a while is Herbivore Botanicals. Herbivore, which started in Seattle in 2011, has skincare products with an emphasis on natural, high-quality ingredients.  Their items are free of synthetic ingredients, including dyes, fragrances, and parabens. They also package them in glass and paper, using recycled and recyclable plastic only when necessary.

The thing that drew me to Herbivore initially was it’s super aesthetic packaging, which features glass bottles and simple labels. They have the kind of products that you want to display since they are simple, but oh so aesthetic. I recently got some items sent to me from the brand and couldn’t want to try them out. Their line ranges from serums to eye creams, moisturizers, masks, and more.

Curious on what to try? Then keep reading…

Herbivore Botanicals Blue Tansy Resurfacing Clarity Mask

Blue Tansy Resurfacing Clarity Mask

Looking for a product to help with large pores? Then you’ll like the Blue Tansy Resurfacing Clay Mask (C$66). This natural mask gently clarifies skin with BHAs and white willow bark, fruit enzymes, as well as aloe and blue tansy essential oil to help with the appearance of redness and irritation.

I actually had never heard of blue tansy before but it’s a natural source of azulene, which in addition to giving the mask its blue colour, it helps to also soothe the appearance of redness and irritation.

This mask is best suited for oily to blemish-prone skin, and if you have more sensitive skin then I would recommend a spot test first to make sure you don’t get irritated.  This mask helps wth enlarged pores and blemish-prone skin, uneven skin texture, oily or combination skin, and dullness.

Apply the product to your skin and then leave on for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing off. Use it a couple times a week for the best results.

Herbivore Botanicals Super Nova 5% Vitamin C + Caffeine Brightening Eye Cream

Super Nova 5% Vitamin C + Caffeine Brightening Eye Cream

Do you suffer from dark circles or dull underlies? Then you’ll love the Super Nova 5% Vitamin C + Caffeine Brightening Eye Cream (C$63). This eye cream is great for dark circles, puffiness, and dryness.

The formula contains THD vitamin C, which is a highly efficacious form of vitamin C, as well as turmeric and caffeine to wake up the eye area.  Apply this eye cream in the morning to instantly wake up the eyes and depuff them, while also brightening the look of dark circles in seven days.

Although this is mainly for daytime use (because of the vitamin C and caffeine), you can use it at night as well.

Herbivore Botanicals Emerald Hemp Seed and Adaptogens Deep Moisture Glow Oil and Moon Fruit Serum

Emerald Hemp Seed and Adaptogens Deep Moisture Glow Oil

Looking for moisturized skin that glows? Then you’ll love the Emerald Hemp Seed and Adaptogens Deep Moisture Glow Oil (C$66). This serum gives skin intense moisture and a natural-looking glow.

Suitable for all skin types, this serum can be applied morning and night, and targets dryness and dullness to reveal glowing skin. The formula contains a blend of omega-fatty-acid-rich hemp seed oil, which also soothes skin, as well as adaptogens like shiitake mushroom and ashwagandha root to protect skin against environmental stressors.  It also has cannabis in it, which will help calm skin.

Moon Fruit 1% Bakuchiol + Peptides Retinol Alternative Serum

Love retinol but looking for a natural version? Then you’ll love the Moon Fruit 1% Bakuchiol + Peptides Retinol Alternative Serum (C$82).

This plant-based retinol-alternative serum helps treat signs of aging thanks to the one per cent bakuchiol and plant peptides. Bakuchiol is an isolated extract from the babchi plant that mimics the smoothing and firming benefits of retinol. It also contains plant peptides to visibly tighten skin, as well as a blend of super fruits that contain vitamins C, E, B5, and antioxidants, amino and fatty acids that firm skin.

This nighttime serum targets fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness, and dryness. The great thing about bakuchiol is that it’s non-irritating, unlike retinol, which when applied too much can give you irritation, dryness, and redness. This serum contains 100 per cent plant-based ingredients promising to gently give you the anti-aging benefits you’re looking for without any issues or irritation. It’s also pregnancy safe.

Herbivore Botanicals products

Herbivore has a ton of other skincare products available as well and I can tell you already that with such a small taste of the brand I’ve had so far, I will definitely be looking into trying out more items. Not only is the packaging so cute, but I love the fact that it’s a plant-powered skincare line that is good for you and the planet.

Have you tried any items from Herbivore Botanicals?

Winter Skincare | LANEIGE Firming Sleeping Mask Review

by Lina Clémence May 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

The past few months have gone by quickly — a blur of work, Netflix binges, and frozen cauliflower-crust pizzas. My skincare routine has taken a hit, and I’ve been trying to get my skin’s moisture back to its healthy pre-hibernation levels. There have been nourishing oils, hydrating serums and rich moisturizers on heavy rotation, but I find myself going back to the LANEIGE Firming Sleeping Mask* ($39) over and over again. And kind of…unsure about it? Now that I’ve almost gone through the entire jar (and lost the little scoop it came with), it’s time to decide if I’ll repurchase this overnight treatment or move on to something new.

LANEIGE Firming Sleeping Mask texture

LANEIGE Firming Sleeping Mask Review

I love overnight treatments. They are a lazy girl’s best friends, especially in winter. A good one can give dull skin its glow back in less than eight hours. The LANEIGE Firming Sleeping Mask is great for those evenings when all you want to do is take your makeup off with a wipe and go to bed. It works hard while you sleep, and you wake up with plump, hydrated skin.

The LANEIGE Firming Sleeping Mask has a really unique texture. If the Water Sleeping Mask (reviewed here) is a gel, the Firming Sleeping Mask is a jelly. When the product is scooped up from the jar, the surface gets chunky and then smooths itself out in seconds…like magic. It’s cold and slippery, which doesn’t sound great, but a little goes a long way and it feels like water on the skin once it warms up. It dries down quickly and without leaving a greasy film behind. My skin soaks it up so quickly, there’s nothing left to rinse off by morning.

LANEIGE Firming Sleeping Mask texture

This is a good mask layering with oils and serums for extra nourishment and hydration as it’s not quite as hydrating as others I’ve tried all by itself. I especially love using it with the fragrance-free Crambé oil I’ve been testing recently as it lets the beautiful scent of the LANEIGE Firming Sleeping Mask shine. It’s lightly fragranced with the same Sleepscent that is found in the Water Sleeping Mask — a relaxing and (hopefully) sleep-inducing blend of ylang-ylang, rose, sandalwood oil and orange flower. My skin is very sensitive to fragrances, but this one has never been a problem for me. Be sure to do a patch test if you have reactive skin!

Unlike the Water Sleeping Mask, which is all about hydration, the Firming Sleeping Mask is  — you guessed it! — all about firming and tightening the skin. As I get older, I definitely notice that my skin is losing some of its firmness and elasticity, especially when I’m dehydrated. I haven’t noticed any changes in my skin’s firmness or elasticity while using this mask, but I do like how plump and hydrated my skin is in the morning. I find that I miss the extra hydration from the Water Sleeping Mask formula, though someone who worries about the first signs of aging might prefer to trade some hydration for a little firming action.

LANEIGE Firming Sleeping Mask

TL;DR?

The Water Sleeping Mask is still my favourite overnight treatment from LANEIGE. It’s mostly down to the fact that I prefer the gel-like texture of the Water Sleeping Mask over a slightly chunky jelly texture of the Firming Sleeping Mask, but also because the first is more hydrating. The Water Sleeping Mask’s packaging is sleeker…and yes, I do pick products partly based on how they look on my dressing table when they’re a little more pricey. If firmness and elasticity are your main concerns, the Firming Sleeping Mask is a good option to target both signs of aging and hydration. For now, I’ll stick to the Water range…while I still can.

A Long Note About Suncreen |A Beautiful Zen

by Lina Clémence May 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

(For anyone who’s still out there (Is anyone still out there? Hello. (It’s me…)), thank you for waiting more than two years for an update, but my dear you shouldn’t be waiting that long for anyone.)

I can only bank so much on my Asian skin genes and not calling for reinforcements is an underestimation of the powers of cumulative UV rays and our propensity to keep breaking down that good ol’ ozone layer (but that’s another post which we aren’t here for). Which all just means, I wear my sunscreen and most often I have it combined within my moisturizer, powder, or foundation to make life less cluttered.

A colleague mentioned that computer screens age us with UV light emissions and a question of sunscreen preferences was raised. I quickly chimed in that everyone needs to get on the Asian sunscreen train, like ASAP, like yesterday.

Since I was asked for my preferences, I feel some obligation to give a half-way decent answer – I did use to write about this stuff and I still have a fading reputation to uphold. So here we are and before anyone gets too excited, this isn’t a comeback (look I didn’t even tag or properly compose my photos and we all know how important that is, *lookin’ at you, beauty bloggers*).

My sunscreen choices will always lean towards those developed/sold in Asia. They’ve just cared about skin pigmentation for way longer and to a stronger degree than North America. This means more innovation, more demand for different formulas that work in hot humid weathers, and the ability to scale production. In other words, thinner, stronger formulas at drug store prices.

The Western market has been coming around though. Some choices to consider are:
La Roche Posay Hydraphase UV SPF 30 ($39.95CDN/50ml): It’s a great everyday moisturizer with SPF in a lotion like consistency. It’s not heavy and you can’t tell it has sunscreen. Once I get through all the new sunscreens/moisturizers I have, I’ll likely repurchase this as a basic everyday option.

Avène High Protection Emulsion SPF 50 ($25.50CDN/50ml): I wrote about my love for it here when I received it through PR contacts but have since repurchased it with my own dollars.

Clarins UV Plus HP SPF 50 ($42CDN/50ml): I tried their old SPF40 version (looks like they may have changed the formula since though) and liked the lightweight feel and matte dry down. (This is a quick post on that option and all of Clarins’ body sunscreen options)

I just cracked open the Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defence SPF 50 ($47CDN/50ml) and was pleasantly surprised by the very thin texture and matte dry down. It’s less thick than Avène’s but both dry down to the same finish.

(If you’re interested, this is a post on a random selection of sunscreen.)

The above approximate the thinner Asian formulas with maybe Kiehl’s winning out but all at higher prices.

It kills me that a large proportion of Asian sunscreen varieties aren’t sold in Western stores – even Shiseido’s Anessa line isn’t sold in Shiseido’s Western outlets and that’s a big seller in Asia. That being said, Korean brands have been getting a foothold into Western culture and Asian supermarkets, like T&T, have beauty sections with good options so we aren’t completely left out.

When I’m in Asia, I step into a drug or cosmetics store and randomly buy 4 – 5 sunscreen options. Even at random, they’re always better in terms of formula and price than Western varieties I’ve tried. During my last trip to Korea, I bought three from Innisfree and have been using the Moist Winter Barrier SPF50. I paid all of…what, $14 for it? Maybe $11? I enjoy everything about it as a winter moisturizer except for the floral scent.

I haven’t used the same product twice but some Asian options to consider are Missha All-Around Safe Sun Block Essence SPF45 for face, anything from Suncut, Skin Aqua and Bioré for the body. Unfortunately, all will need to be purchased online (try Ebay, Sasa, or Yesstyle – I’ve purchased from all three before) but if you want to step into a store you may find options at T&T Supermarket, The Face Shop, and random Asian beauty stores in Richmond. I suspect that prices are higher than in Asia though.

One worth a specific mention is Majolica Majorca’s Nude Makes Gel SPF 50 (For Active Girls) (~$25CDN?/25g): It’s not in the drug store price realm but I loved this stuff. It’s a tinted face moisturizer with the benefit of an Asian sunscreen formula that even works for my “darker” Asian skin tone (but likely not for anything darker). Majolica Majorca is a sub-brand of Shiseido (their mascara is great and they have really cute blushes). I wore it all through one summer and it never felt heavy.

Regardless of which sunscreen you choose, slather it on (I once heard a tablespoon is needed to properly cover your face), and bring it all the way down past your neck.

As a final note to this long not-return to my blog, for those who haven’t gotten on the cleansing oil train…that’s a great follow up journey to your foray into Asian sunscreens. Water and soap doesn’t always cut it when cleaning sunscreen off your face, but a good cleansing oil will always do the trick.
