Sheer Skirt + One of the Best Tailored Blazers

by Lina Clémence July 5, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

S

Sheer determination.  A fashion challenge that gave me a lot of freedom and creativity.

I wanted to style with this skirt because 1. I love a fashion challenge and 2. It pushed me to be comfortable in my choices and skin.  To balance the sheerness of the skirt, I paired full structure on top.  A great tailored blazer and a high neck tank along with a dash of color.

Outfit styling with a double breasted suit blazer currently 30% off with code ‘EXTRA30’ | sheer midi skirt currently 30% off with code ‘EXTRA30’ | high neck tank

On another note – just wanted to share this double breasted suit blazer again, casually styled with jeans.  It’s beautiful in person!  Structured, tailored and looks so sleek and polished.  For sizing reference, I’m 5 ft 105 pounds and wearing a size XS (no alterations needed on the blazer).

Just in case you’re in the mood for denim, these slim straight leg jeans (currently 25% off) are really good.  They have a nice stretch to them without becoming loose over time.  As for the leg opening, the best way for me to describe it is… if skinny jeans and wide leg jeans had a baby, they would be these slim straight legs.  They run big, I highly recommend sizing down 1 to 2 sizes.  I’m normally a size 26 in jeans and take size Petite 24 in these.  The heeled Mary Jane (currently 25% off ) on the other hand, I find that they fit TTS.

Light Neutral Summer Outfit & Sale Styles

by Lina Clémence July 4, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

While summer is a perfect time to have fun with prints and colors, there’s just something so elegant and calming about a light neutral look. Here’s a Coastal Chic outfit idea, with a tipped cotton-blend bouclé tank and cardigan (for when the evening fog rolls in…).

Summer-ready styles on sale

The July 4th sale notices have been hitting my inbox, and I’ve been keeping eyes open for good summer basics that aren’t already too picked over for sizes.

Open-weave ballet flats – $142.50 (extra 30% off with code SUMMERTIME)

I forgot to include these in my Summer Shoes roundup, but they are darling, and have some nice cushioning in the insole. Don’t forget to apply that code for an additional 30% off!

Madewell open weave ballet flats clay.
Kule varsity-tipped cotton cardigan in cream/hazelnut.

Stripe tipped cotton cardigan – $167 (extra 15% off with code EXTRA15)

Tennis, anyone? I love the “varsity” stripe detail on this cotton cardigan, currently in my cart. 🛒 (Also available in Navy with white detail.)

Breezy linen dress in navy gingham – $99

Perfect for that warm weather vacation or staycation. Wear as shown here or add a belt, or as a poolside cover-up, or wear it open as a lightweight duster.

Talbot's "Sloane" gold metallic open weave ballet flats.

More ballet flats! – $129 (40% off purchase)

While I often find Talbot’s summer clothing selections a bit, um…eye-searing, they do have a nice selection of summer shoes and accessories. And for a limited time, you can take 40% off your entire purchase!

Featherweight cashmere shell – $99.50

I know it seems counterintuitive, but these lightweight cashmere tanks are breathable and comfortable on all but the most sweltering days. I’m wearing a size Medium here. Lots of colors included in the markdown

The matching cardigan is also on sale!

Susan B. wears a pink cashmere sleeveless sweater with matching cardigan tied over the shoulders, with red linen pants and gold strappy sandals.

Hearing aids update

Some of you have asked how it’s going with my new hearing aids, so here’s an update. I’ve now had my hearing aids for a month, and am still quite happy with them. I usually wear them for about 10-14 hours per day, and leave them in the charger overnight.

They’re quite comfortable and I mostly forget I’m wearing them. (I notice them most for the first few minutes after I put them in.) I went back to Costco this week for a re-check, and they made a slight adjustment at my request to reduce some high end and extraneous noise. But I can still hear voices and speech clearly.

Someone asked whether you should match the hearing aid color to your skin or hair. I’d say if you mostly wear your hair up, or if it’s short enough that your ears are always exposed, I’d go with skin color. I went with a shade close to my hair color, as the sides of my hair are just long enough to cover the aids. But really, they’re small enough that they aren’t visible, unless you’re looking from the back. And I don’t really care if anyone knows I’m wearing them. 😉

Do you wear hearing aids? What are some of your tips for choosing and wearing them? Let me know in comments!

Susan B. sits on a wooden bench wearing a brown knit jacket, blue jeans and colorful bracelets.

The Ultimate Guide to Styling Leggings for Fall & Winter: Plus-Size Edition

by Lina Clémence July 3, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Leggings are a wardrobe staple that never go out of style—especially during the cooler months! As plus-size women, we know that comfort and style go hand in hand, and leggings provide the perfect balance of both. Whether you’re running errands, heading to brunch, or dressing up for a cozy night out, the right pair of leggings can be styled in countless ways. In this post, I’m sharing my favorite ways to wear leggings for fall and winter, using the same pair to create multiple chic and seasonally appropriate looks.

Shop My Favorite Leggings Below:

Why Leggings Are a Must-Have for Fall & Winter

  • Comfort & Stretch: Leggings offer a flexible fit that moves with you, making them ideal for all-day wear.
  • Layering Essential: They pair effortlessly with oversized sweaters, tunics, and coats.
  • Versatile & Chic: With the right styling, leggings can go from casual to sophisticated in no time.
  • Cold-Weather Approved: Fleece-lined and thermal leggings add warmth without sacrificing style.

1. Chic & Sleek: Blazer + Statement Accessories

For a more polished approach, throw on a structured blazer over a fitted turtleneck or bodysuit. This instantly transforms leggings from casual to chic. Complete the look with pointed-toe booties or sleek heels for a put-together ensemble perfect for dinner or a work-friendly outfit.

Style Tip: Opt for a bold-colored blazer or printed accessories to add personality to your look.

2. Elevated Edge: Leather + Boots

Give your leggings an edgy twist by pairing them with a sleek leather element and boots. This look is perfect for a casual night out or a concert. You can also swap the combat boots for heeled booties to make it more refined.

Style Tip: Add a statement belt or chain belt around your waist for extra flair.

3. Layered & Luxe: vest + Turtleneck

A printed vest instantly makes leggings feel luxurious. Layer it over a fitted turtleneck or a sweater dress for an effortlessly chic cold-weather outfit. Finish with knee-high boots or heeled booties for a sophisticated, cozy vibe.

Style Tip: Monochrome outfits (all-black, all-neutral, or tonal layering) can make your look feel more expensive and streamlined.

4. Sporty & On-the-Go: baseball cap + Sneakers

When comfort is key but you still want to look stylish, go for a baseball cap and leggings combo. An oversized blazer adds dimension, while trendy sneakers keep it fresh and functional.

Style Tip: Layer with a beanie and oversized sunglasses for a cool, athleisure-inspired aesthetic.

5. elevated casual: Moto jacket + chic boots

For a sophisticated approach, opt for a great layering top over your leggings, along with a stylish moto jacket. Pair with statement heeled boots  for a look that’s equal parts comfortable and glamorous.

Style Tip: Play with textures—think sequins, velvet, or faux fur—to bring a festive touch to your outfit.

6. going out Ready: sleek heels + sexy bodysuit

You can never go wrong with a monochromatic black look! This one gives sleek and sexy, so that you’re ready to get into whatever the night may bring. For cooler weather, you can easily add a trench coat or a faux fur jacket for added luxe.

Leggings are the ultimate fall and winter essential for plus-size women, offering endless styling possibilities. Whether you’re keeping it casual, dressing up for a night out, or layering for warmth, the key is to balance proportions and play with different textures and accessories.

Which of these looks is your favorite? Let me know in the comments, and be sure to follow along for more plus-size fashion inspiration!

penny thoughts: romanticizing the small

by Lina Clémence July 2, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

2 minute read

Once you you start living for small details – the smell of a rainstorm moving in, the feeling of kismet with a stranger, the way winter light hits your favorite building – you’ll start to realize how big those nuances were all along.

You’ll collect them in your pockets, as one might collect lucky pennies. From time to time, you’ll dig your hand into your “pocket” and feel the assortment – run your finger tips over their textures, you’ll feel their weight and you’ll dance them in your palm, taking small joy in the tinny sound they make for you. A collection of otherwise overlooked details that give you reason to pause and relish their quiet significance. Individually, they may not amount to much, but collectively, they’ll make your life feel all the more rich. I promise.

July 2025 Six Paintings – 12 Months #1: Sun, Water Maine by Georgia O’Keeffe

by Lina Clémence July 1, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

July 1, 2025

July??? I’m sort of amazed. You would think that I would adjust to the passage of time, after a few years…

Remember – there will be posts every weekday this week, and on both Monday and Tuesday next week. Because these posts for the paintings aren’t very big, I give you lots of them all in a row!

Let’s jump into this perfectly perfect summer painting:

So many of us have been living with ridiculously hot weather for a while, so it was easy to get into the mood to get this heroine some true summer clothes!

I cheated just a bit on the Weekly Timeless Wardrobe; I’m calling the striped tee shirt “sleeveless” when of course it isn’t! But our heroine already has all of her tee shirts, and I felt pretty comfortable that finding another print sleeveless top was going to be DIFFICULT… So I cheated!

There are no referees at The Vivienne Files…

I really love the colors of this wardrobe. Navy and beige are so uncomplicated and classic, but the green and blue clothes brighten up everything:

And her accessories are both fun and practical:

Obviously, our heroine has plenty of options for how to wear her new garments. As always, if you don’t have ideas, you don’t want to buy something.

I particularly like to remember that a tank top can be a perfect thing to wear under a cardigan on those days when the weather is going to be somewhere between nippy in the morning and sweaty in the afternoon!

It’s difficult to find a good way to wear shorts in the colder weather, but it’s nice to see that most of what you buy for summer can also carry into much of the rest of the year. No reason to pack things away if you still wear them, right?

love,

Janice

Earlier installments of these articles, which will include links to all of the clothes and accessories, can be found here: Christmas Day Preview, January, February, March, April, May, June

p.s. Ten years ago, our painting was by Augustus John, with stunning turquoise, camel and gold…

Six Ways to Get Your Creative Juices Flowing – The Style Sample

by Lina Clémence June 30, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Need a creativity boost? Read on for a few ways to jumpstart your brain and get your juices flowing again!

When I need to get my creative juices flowing for a client call, a CEO Day, or just to get my brain back on track, some combination of these things always works:

1 // Exercise

I have a bunch of videos saved to a Youtube playlist—mostly dance, yoga, and dumbbell workouts.

Even if I’m in a shit mood and just don’t feel like doing nuthin’ 5-10 minutes of dancing with Mike Peele or The Fitness Marshall puts me in a better headspace.

2 // Pretty Pins

The number of Pinterest boards I have is low key ridiculous, but it’s oddly comforting and mildly stimulating to collect Pictures of Stuff You Like.

For me that’s fashion, food, graphic design, and interiors. It’s digital hoarding, but organized for type-A personalities.

3 // Naps

Hear me out: dozing at my desk has helped me get through many a post-lunch slump. The key is not to get so comfortable that you go to SLEEP sleep.

I like to sit in my desk chair, put my feet up, and set my phone timer for 10-15 minutes (and I may hit snooze once or twice).

Hear me out: dozing for 10-15 minutes at my desk has helped me get through many a post-lunch slump.

4 // Art

Museums and art shows and markets, oh my! Part of it is the stuff there, but part of it is just being around other people who also appreciate art.

Something about finding “your people” that activates the ol’ receptive neurons and makes being alone feel less lonely.

5 // Nature

Go outside! Fresh air is a cure for damn near everything IMO.

I’ll take a 5 min walk around the block with music, a podcast, a meditation, in silence—hell, even crying—depending on what I feel I need. It may not solve the problem but I always feel better and my brain is more receptive.

6 // People

Talk to people. I swear, just asking how it’s going, LISTENING, and following up with a relevant question is a game-changer for brain function. In 2020 we learned how much we NEED human interaction; that hasn’t changed.

Know that you can boost your creativity even when you’re feeling stuck! This is what helps me when I need some inspiration or just want an outlet for all the thoughts bouncing around in my head.

How do you spark your creativity when it seems to be on pause?

Fourth of July Ready

by Lina Clémence June 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

FOURTH OF JULY READY

Hi, ladies! I hope everyone is hanging in there! What a crazy time to be alive, right? Is anyone else refreshing the news every couple of minutes? I am on X (formerly Twitter) and find myself checking it every hour. I know the ending of the story (God wins) already, but I keep checking! I am praying for our military personnel and leaders. If you have a family member in the military or police force, please know how much I appreciate their service.

Speaking of this country, the Fourth of July is just around the corner, and I wanted to share a fun outfit for the occasion that can be worn day or night, and even as separates. I thought these matching denim pieces were so cute. The smocked top is slightly cropped (however, none of my skin is showing), and has removable spaghetti straps for a strapless look. The skirt has a smocked waistband that flows into a gathered, ankle-length silhouette. This is a great look to wear all summer long and into early fall. I paired an open-knit cardigan over my shoulders, but for the actual Fourth, I will be wearing this one. I paired these silver sandals with this look, but they are currently sold out in most sizes… sorry! These are a cute alternative.

A few other things I’ve been loving lately…

Also, J.CREW is having a SUMMER EVENT, with up to 50% off on almost everything!

We are keeping the grandkids tonight (overnight) so their parents can celebrate their anniversary. I can’t believe they’ve been married sixteen years. Time goes by so fast, it’s scary!

I hope you have a great weekend! Stay well and Be safe! xx

Dior Menswear Spring 2026 Collection Review

by Lina Clémence June 28, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Today, on day four of Menswear Paris Fashion Week, Jonathan Anderson presented his debut collection as creative director of Christian Dior. Appointed in June, the British designer kick-started his era as the sole creative force behind the fabled French fashion house with a bang. The front row was stacked with a plethora of A-list talent (including everyone from Rihanna and Josh O’Connor to Donatella Versace and Robert Pattinson). Inside the vast show venue that was modeled after Berlin’s Gemäldegalerie museum, models paraded the set dressed in Jonathan’s take on classic Dior house codes. The recipient of theFashionSpot’s 2023 Designer of the Year award infused the past and present, amalgamating 18th-19th-century dressing with a contemporary preppy-inspired style.

Dior Menswear Spring 2026 Collection Review

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“It’s just JWA x Uniqlo with a Dior logo.” [youthinasia]

“Snoozefest.” [FashionPower]

“I knew it would look this way. The womenswear is going to be worse.” [brandon J pierre]

“What a bore. I thought it would never end. I don’t remember anything besides the unflattering bar jackets or whatever that was supposed to be.” [Avonlea]

“I was afraid of this. It’s good, but I just don’t know if it’s right for Dior. It needs a little bit more refinement. We don’t need a more luxe version of his namesake label.” [GivenchyHomme]

“Great debut! I knew it would be more commercial than JW and Loewe, but I think he knows how to make commercial pieces that are still interesting and incredibly desirable. There was quite a bit of fashion ideas running throughout the collection.” [Marc10]

“The debut was solid, IMO. I like how approachable the collection can be. Fabulous soundtrack too.” [thiago]

THEFASHIONGUITAR

by Lina Clémence June 27, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Welcome back! It’s been FOREVER since we were here on Thefashionguitar together, but I’m so excited that we are, and even more to share our first “Home story”, created in partnership with Maisonette.

After moving into our new apartment in our favorite neighborhood on the UES, October last year, our first job was to get both childrens bedrooms ready. We’ve moved many times, within London, from London to New York City, and within New York City, but we’ve always made it a case to – no matter how the rest of the apartment looks – to finish the children’s bedrooms first! Although, this is actually the first time they are in their own room, until this apartment they’ve always shared a bedroom.

Until this apartment, James and Stella shared their bedroom and they loved it. We loved it, too, because we believed the companionship actually helped them feeling comfortable and secure when going to bed. They rarely woke up at night, or had trouble falling asleep – and I don’t necessarily think this is because of any sleep training magic, because we never did any in particular other than having a solid bedtime routine, which we vigorously sticked to. At all times.

Then there’s also an age-factor that played part in the decision to keep them together, rather than separating them. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against separate rooms, I just have more Pro’s than Con’s, and in the end of the day, it worked for us… But this doesn’t mean it’s a formula for guaranteed success. Anyway, where I’m going with this, is that what I mentioned before, about James and Stella being secure and comfortable together and the the age-factor, is simply that we feel that when they we’re younger, they had stronger emotional needs to “support” each other. Now, James being almost 10 and Stella turning 8 in a few weeks, we noticed their emotional needs around bedtime, or at night, are different. James needs his own space, his own moments before bed, and even dare I say, some sort of privacy. Or call it personal space. Stella is definitely not 100% there yet, emotionally. She asks us frequently if she can sleep with James, or James with her, but sadly for Stella, James refuses more often than that he says yes. Stella therefore, we think, asked us if the new baby – arriving end of October if all goes well – can stay in her room. We obviously said yes to that, but explained that he will first be in our room, until he’s sleeping through the night. She agreed. We all agreed. And we went back to implementing a solid bedtimes routine for both of them, in separate rooms – god is this a challenge, after their summer break! But a week in, a week of waking up early for school, we feel we are getting there… now we have to just stick to it!

But sorry, I know you didn’t come here for parenting advice – nor do I want this platform to be the focus of that – but for children’s bedrooms ideas, so let’s get to it!

For both rooms one thing was very clear from the start; I wanted a design infused feeling, but with modern basis. Primal colors were a must, too, that I knew ever since I saw the Kelly Green bed on Maisonette – which ended up in James’ room. Stella always wanted a bunk bed, and with her room being more rectangle shaped than the squared room James was going to sleep in, it felt like the perfect fit. Plus, they now both had also space for a guest – when sleepovers are back on the menu again. Oeuf is a favorite furniture brand in our household, and with the Oeuf desk that moved from the old apartment to this in, it was an easy choice to go for a bunkbed from this brand.

Accessories around the bed we kept simple, but in line with the color palette of the room and the style we were vibe we were trying to achieve. For James this meant a more grownup atmosphere in Kelly green and Cook’s blue – by Farrow & Ball – and darker wooden undertones, for Stella bright and happy mixing boldly tones of red and pink, and a beautiful wallpaper by Work + Sea.

Desk pace is more important than ever! Where before the pandemic the kids would do most of their schoolwork at the dining table, homeschooling brought the importance of their own “work space” to be free to do Zoom classes and virtual playdates. Also a place to relax – preferably with a rocking chair if you ask Stella – became an important part of their room. It’s like their room became mini-apartments so that when we are at home with the four – soon five – of us, we don’t have to constantly sit, work, or read on top of each other. The pandemic definitely made it very clear we all are at some points during the day in need of our “own space” and with a bedroom that offers a little bit of everything, we served the kids the best we could!

Thank you Maisonette to making our children’s bedroom dream become reality. For the wonderful team that came over to photograph and film – stay tuned for this one – the old and the new!
