The Long Version of Today’s Experience at a Korean Hospital (if this isn’t something you’re interested in, keep scrolling and trust that you’ll have missed nothing important)

Back Story: Remember in this week’s This Week you read about my upcoming eye surgery and the curiosity (to put it mildly) about why I was being admitted to the hospital two days before surgery SLASH I’m messing with the timeline here, don’t be alarmed if you’re confused. It’s confusing.

In next week’s This Week in South Korea post you’ll read the short (but still very aggravating) story of my day spent getting admitted to the hospital two days ahead of my eye surgery. But I felt it was far too long for the This Week post (next week) so am making it a stand-alone post…if you want to read a lot of me complaining and being aggravated (word of the week), go ahead. If not, by all means, scroll on to the next post, there’s nothing to see here.

PS: no pictures.

*********************************************************************************

Monday, June 2 – two days before my surgery is scheduled

I had an 8:45am appt with the nephrologist to talk about my kidney again…I guess they need to check on whatever medical issues you have before going into surgery. I’m grateful I didn’t have to see the psychiatrist and get the “6 years is too long to be on welbutrin” speech again. Neph Dr shared about my low functioning kidney (old news to me at this point, have been hearing about it since summer 2021). Anyway, she also mentioned my “Korea Cholesterol,” which a dr talked to me about LAST summer before I had the kidney procedure but no one ever did anything with that information even though I asked someone, I forget who, about it.

I call it my Korea Cholesterol because I’ve never had a cholesterol issue before coming here. Anyway, she put me on a statin, which I’ve heard conflicting views on but…I’ll give it a try. I’ll go back to see her end of July to see if there’s any change to my cholesterol level AND she said it COULD help my kidney function.

Okay, so, finished with that by 9:15. But I’d been told to check-in at admissions at 11, so I waited at the hospital as it wasn’t really enough time to be worth going home and then returning. I had a not very good, expensive, breakfast in a cafe in the hospital, sat at a very unfortunate chair:desk ratio situation in the lounge area of the hospital to get some remote work out of the way, then got some snacks from 7-11 (also in the hospital) to put in the fridge in the hospital room. I have not been a big fan of the food I’ve had here, so…forewarned is fore-armed.

At the main hospital check-in, it’s a whole process…with ticketing and payment kiosks, prescription pick-up windows, general cashier/scheduling windows, and admission/discharge windows. I was supposed to be going to A/D but the kiosk kept giving my tickets for general windows, so I’d wait my turn then go up and try to explain that I was really supposed to be at admissions, but the kiosk didn’t give me a ticket for admissions, could they please help me. At the first window, they didn’t understand. They look at their computer, they look at my paperwork, they look at my translator app where I’ve tried to explain and they’re just like “why are you here?” Finally she got it (I think) and told me to go back to the main kiosk and now I’d get the right # for A/D. Okay. Back to kiosk. Still got a general window ticket. waited AGAIN, when it was my turn I went to different window, started explaining all over again, but this one looks at her computer and is saying something about money. I said I already paid for this morning’s appt…surely they weren’t already charging me for the surgery?

Turns out I was due a refund from last week’s eye exams and opthalmology consultation because at that time none of us were aware that I was still covered by the Korean National Health Insurance. But now they know, so I get a refund. Nice. But she wants to wire it to my Korean bank. And I want it back on the card I used. I can’t move (well, maybe I can, but I don’t know how and there’s going to be a fee involved) money from Korean to American bank. I’ve only wired US to Korea, never Korea to US, and the money isn’t as immediately useful to me in the Korean back as it would be just back on the original card (most useful) or in my US account (second most useful). Back and forth back and forth, I don’t have my bank book with me, here’s my ARC (Alien Resident Card), here’s my passport, oh wait, I found my bank # in my phone…all this takes a lot of translation apping and gesturing. Finally that’s done (the money will be in your Korean bank in 2 days, okay fine whatever okay), and she writes an A/D window # on the bank of my kiosk ticket (why didn’t the first person just do that?) and I sit down to wait. In a few minutes I hear my name being called beh-TEE! beh-TEE! And it’s the bank refund girl…and she says the money will be there today, that my bank had been asleep when she first tried to do it. I understand none of this cuz…what does my bank have to do with anything if she’s just moving money from the Korean hospital to my Korean bank account. Anyway, okay, whatever.

FINALLY…it’s now 11;40 and I’ve been trying to check-in to admissions for 45 minutes. I FINALLY get to the A/D window and he goes, you were supposed to check in at 11am. AARRGGHH!!! I said I’ve Been Trying!!! However, he says…your admission time has been changed to 2pm.

(this is a blank paragraph) (blank like my face)

I never noticed before, that the words face and cafe have the same four letters in them.

Internally, I’m all WTF &*%^&&^^%!!! but outwardly I’m One Big Sigh and an insincerely smiling KAMSAMNIDA. I could have gone home at 9:30 when I was done with the nephrologist. I didn’t need to lug all my hospital and work stuff all over up and down. I could have been in the comfort of my own room.

I was already aggravated about the repeat eye surgery in the first place. I’m INCREDIBLY aggravated that I have to check into the hospital TWO DAYS before the surgery. And now I’m DOUBLY INCREDIBLY aggravated that they have wasted my time and my morning.

Those of you who have been here for awhile KNOW how valuable my time is to me. Don’t Waste MY Time! That’s MY time. Don’t mess with it.

So I go home. Turn on the ac (it’s gross and humid out), get out of my sweat soaked clothes, put my nightgown on, and get in bed. I doze. It’s lovely. An hour and a half later, I get up, get redressed, repack all my electonics (that have been charging while I rested), and get BACK on the bus to the hospital.

You’d think that would be the end of the story but NOOOOO.

Guess where the kiosk sends me? Yup. But at least this person understood right away, wrote an appropirate number on the back of my ticket…I waited briefly then FINALLY got the Admissions window. We got through all the stuff…eye surgery, no guardian, cheapest room please, I get my bracelet and up I (try to) go to the 4th floor.

The elevators are a little odd, they’re on both sides of a wide hallway, and the 4 elevators for the odd-numbered floors are one side and the 4 elevators for the even-numbered floors are on the other side (ooh, same for side and dies). How many times have I been to this hospital? And this is the first time I’ve noticed that. So for once I get myself on the proper side from the get-go, waiting for an UP elevator, get on and try to press the button for the 4th floor. My vision is bad, it’s sort of hard to see but I swear there is no 4 button. Someone else on the elevator realized what I was searching for and just pressed “F.” And then I remembered that the number 4 is considered bad luck in Korea…so I guess the F represented Four.

In my goshiwon I live on the 4th floor and press the 4 button every day.

OHHHH. That could explain a lot.

ANYWAY, when the door opens at F, another patient takes my arm and walks me over to the other side (the odd-numbered floors) and points to the 9, says “koo,” like…huh?? I said, anyo (no), SA (four). AHHHHH she says, then walks me through the closed doors to the floor and shows me to the nurse’s station.

What was THAT about??

Anyway, At this point in the day I am just like…so confused by everything. A nurse takes me in and starts doing all the things, what meds are you on, any allergies, how are your teeth, do you have a guardian, etc etc. It’s a lot of translation apping and me signing things I do not understand.

Then, kahp-jug-hee (all of a sudden), she goes JIGGUM!!! (right now!) – go to the angwa (optholmalogy dept), JIGGUM! Like…you’ve been jerking me around all day and now *I* have to hurry?? Ha. At least I was still in my clothes. Last time I had to put on the hospital costume first and then they pushed me around in a wheelchair to do all the eye things…when I was sitting, the top kept opening (it’s a v-neck button down) and showing too much boob and belly so I had to keep clutching the fabric parts together. At least I was spared that.

I went back downstairs (on the correct elevator), took a number from the opthalmology dept kiosk and waited my turn to go in and get drops in my eyes then get whisked through all the different rooms for the different tests. I always feel like they take me through faster than other people. I do all the tests, I see the surgeon FINALLY. Blah blah blah she says. And now I get to ask – the surgery is on Wednesday, right??

Dr:Yes.

Me: Then what am I doing tomorrow?

Dr: Nothing.

Me: Quizzical look on face.

Dr: Well, you can go out during the day but come back in in the afternoon.

Me: What am I doing tonight?

Dr: Nothing.

Moment of silence.

Me: Then…can I go home NOW…and come back tomorrow afternoon??

Dr: Uhm…I think you can. Yes. That would be fine.

THEN WHY HAVE I BEEN HERE ALL DAY, MINUS 2 HOURS WHEN I MANAGED TO ESCAPE??? Why didn’t they just “admit me” when I was there at 9:30am then say I could go home and return Tuesday afternoon?? Why?? Why? WHY???

But okay, okay, good. I have to go back upstairs to get my overnight bag that the nurse up there told me to leave while on my angwa journey. I get off at F all by myself (and they say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks) and go to pick up my bag and I am WHISKED to my room, shown my clothes on the bed, she’s pulling the curtain closed so I can change and I’m like no no no JIB-EH KAYO! I’m going home!

Oh the shock and horror on their faces. What? Why? What? Back out to the nurse’s station we go so I can try to explain that the surgeon, not 15 minutes ago, told me I could go home and come back tomorrow. Okay okay they said. Then tried to get me BACK to the room! Ha ha. At this point I was like I AM JIB-EH KAYOING no matter WHAT you say.

Finally the head nurse called The Powers That Be who said that yes, I was allowed to go home. I had to sign a bunch of things, I guess saying that if anything happened to me OUT THERE while I was tachnically admitted to the hospital, that it was on me. OKAY FINE LET ME GO HOME.

Every Nurse: BUT YOU’LL BE BACK TOMORROW AT 4, RIGHT??

Me: gone.

And I took the SECOND uber of the day.

Honestly: 2 busses, 2 ubers, + 1 crappy breakfast = $27. Getting to go home? PRICELESS.

But the waste of the day?? UNFORGIVABLE

I got home at 5:20pm. Exhausted, sweaty, and so annoyed.

The one bright spot is that I actually took one of the xanax this morning, knowing how anxious the whole hospital ordeal makes me. And it worked. No anxiety. ANNOYANCE, yes…but no anxiety.

And later, my friend Giorgio and I went up to the roof with ice cream bars and just chatted.

The End.

OH so the reason they wanted me to be admitted on Monday when the surgery wasn’t til Wednesday (this was another question for the surgeon) is because Tuesday is Presidential Election Day (remember their “current” president was impeached so this was a snap election to get a new president) and Election Day is a government holiday and they don’t do admissions on government holidays.

That was the explanation, but I don’t think it was a good enough reason. Why not just surger me on a different day, that’s NOT the day after a government holiday? Or, since the surgery is not til 9 or 10 in the morning, why not just let me come to the hospital that morning and not make me stay over at all? This just seems like a situation that could have been so easily avoided.

AND…why not schedule the nephrologist’s appointment for while I’m admitted to the hospital? Instead of making it a separate appointment, making me spend more of my time?  I mean, I know why…so they can bill separately for that consultation. But I’d gladly agree to pay for it while admitted, cuz then it would be an In The Hospital Activity, a way to pass the long, boring time…instead of using, yes I’m going to say it again, MY TIME.

Anyway. In the end, I had a good night’s sleep and am now having a leisurely(ish) morning before I have to re-pack and go BACK to the hospital at 4pm.

Just in case you were curious.

OH – and a cute moment in the day (gotta make sure we don’t miss those!) was when I was done in the opthalmology department and headed back up to F, all the nurses at the station got up and said “beh-TEE! ANYONG!” (which is “familiar” hello and goodbye) and waved the Korean wave. Which was adorable. They’re all very cute.

Okay, goodbye.

Cross Bracelets – Their Origin and Evolution Over Time

by Lina Clémence June 5, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Cross bracelets have had, over time, quite a profound and multifaceted appeal to women. It extends far beyond mere ornamentation. The cross itself though associated often with Christian symbolism extends back into antiquity. Crosses in jewelry can be traced back to civilizations long before the advent of Christianity.

To truly understand the origins of cross bracelets, let’s take a journey through time, and explore both their history and diverse meanings across the centuries and different cultures.

The Origins of the Cross in Jewelry

Long before the cross became synonymous with Christianity, many ancient societies used cross like symbols. In Egypt, the ankh, with its distinctive looped top, represented both life and immortality. It is often depicted in the hands of deities and pharaohs.

The Egyptian Ankh

Similarly, in Mesopotamia, the crux ansata, bears a striking resemblance to the ankh. To that culture it symbolized life and fertility associated with the goddess Ishtar. These early symbols, characterized by their intersecting lines, suggest a fundamental human inclination to find meaning in their lives and to the world around them.

Perhaps they were inspired by observations of the natural world or ancient held cosmological beliefs. The presence of such symbols in ancient adornment indicates a long-standing tradition of using objects worn on the body for spiritual purposes – like amulets which were believed to offer protection. Or as indicators of status and rank.

The adoption of the cross as the central symbol of Christianity marked a significant turning point in its history. Representing the crucifixion and subsequent resurrection of Jesus Christ, the cross became a potent reminder of sacrifice and salvation.

In the early days of Christianity, when believers faced persecution, the cross was replaced with the Chi-Rho, a monogram using a combination of the first two Greek letters of “Christ”)  These early symbols served as expressions of devotion while also carrying hidden meanings that provided solace and a sense of community during perilous times. As Christianity gradually gained acceptance, its incorporation into jewellery, necklaces, and bracelets increased.

The Evolution of Cross Bracelets

In the early Christian and Byzantine periods, cross bracelets most likely took simple forms, consisting of bands made from materials like leather or base metals with small crosses attached or engraved upon them. The Byzantine era was known for its rich iconography and a host of intricate designs in Christian art.

While surviving examples from these early periods might be scarce, the strong connection between Byzantine art and jewelry suggests that early cross bracelets would have featured symbolic motifs and meticulous craftsmanship.

During the Medieval period, the Celtic cross reigned in Ireland and Scotland, with its intricate interlacing patterns and a central circle. The Celtic blended Christian symbolism with local cultural traditions. The widespread belief in the protective power of the cross during this era likely contributed to the personal wearing of cross bracelets as talismans for spiritual safeguarding.

The Brigids cross which is made in many communities around Ireland every February honors and Irish woman who lived in the 5th century. Its unique design woven from rushes has an unusually prescient look to it which echoes the Art Deco era of the 1920s.

Cross Bracelets in the Victorian and Art Nouveau Era

In the Victorian era, cross pendants became smaller and more intricate, often incorporating floral motifs, enamel details, and delicate gemstone accents. This trend likely extended to bracelets, with smaller, more refined cross designs becoming popular, often gifted as tokens of love and remembrance.

The Art Nouveau movement which emerged in the 1890s, was in a sense a reaction to an increasingly industrialized world of trains, trams and steam engines. It was the antithesis of mechanical world which sought beauty in the natural world. This modern aesthetic deeply affected the jewelry designs of the early 20th century.

Art Nouveau jewelry distinctively feminine in nature and often used as inspiration the curves of a woman’s figure as well as dragonflies, trees. vines and floral designs. There are many examples of cross bracelets from the Art Nouveau era to be found on Ebay and other auction sites.

Art Deco Jewelry

After WW1 art design then merged with industrial geometric shapes to produce what was quickly dubbed Arts décoratifs or Decorative Arts ( in the 1920s), and later in the 1960s,it became known simply as Art Deco.  While the Art Deco period is predominantly associated with its geometric and culturally inspired motifs, cross designs were still found on jewelry notably on charm bracelets.

Cross Bracelets: Why Their Popularity Endures

Today, cross bracelets, like many iconic jewelry designs are trending. While they still hold spiritual significance to many, the cross symbol resonates to many for a variety of reasons. By its bold statement, its cultural heritage and as a symbol of hope and faith. Ultimately a woman might be drawn to a cross bracelet for a combination of these reasons, finding in it a symbol that expresses with her individual beliefs, values, and style.

THE WESTIN MALDIVES MIRIANDHO RESORT – The Fierce Diaries

by Lina Clémence June 4, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

As the end of the year approaches, I had to take my annual getaway which always happens to be the Maldives. I know shocking, right? Haha

This time I booked my hotel stay at the newly opened The Westin Maldives Miriandho Resort which was a real treat using my Bonvoy Marriott Mastercard which I will get into details about that later! got my rest in and the staff were a pleasure. It’s like a little family and I love how they all knew my name and all my likes and dislikes.

THE BEACH VILLA
I spent 3 nights at the beach villa that was really spacious and had a private pool, a bathtub and an outdoor shower and I spent all of those days barefoot and loved it!

The bed itself was extremely comfortable it was like sleeping in the clouds. If you were a beach person and just want to walk out from your villa and straight into the beautiful sands and ocean, I would highly recommend this for you.

THE FOOD

We had 3 options to choose from. The first was The Island Kitchen where we would have breakfast and lunch. I can’t stress on how big the variety of food that was available. From burgers to pizza & pasta, Chinese to Indian… you name it and it was there!

The Pearl was another favorite of mine. It’s the more fancy option where you would need to book in advance to get a seat. It’s a Japanese restaurant and honestly one of my favorite. They just recently had flown in two of Japan’s best chefs to reset the menu and take over the kitchen for the last 3 weeks and I was happy I got to catch them on their last day there.

Hawker is another favourite of mine.. it’s basically an Asian street food restaurant.. it has such a chill vibe and your feet are in the sand and the chef was so good! I had the Nasi Goreng seafood and it’s another one of my favourite meals… if you haven’t tried it I highly suggest you do like now!

Here is a bonus for you. Yes, I mentioned that there were only 3 restaurants but that doesn’t mean that’s all they have.. every night they would have a different theme that night and one of the nights I was there they had a welcome cocktail hour  at the Sunset Bar and on my last night they had a traditional Maldivian buffet which was amazing!

A special request? Yes, they do them too. I had a floating breakfast in my room and I also heard that they had a couple have a romantic dinner in the middle of the ocean. I mean whatever you need they will try their best to make it happen!

THE MARRIOTT BONVOY CREDIT CARD

For those who follow me on Instagram might have already heard me talk about this but it’s honestly the best thing you can ask for if you’re a traveler like me!

The Marriott Bonvoy card that can be purchased at Emirates NBD is your best travel companion, just by signing up for it you will automatically get a bonus of 150,000 points which can be redeemable for a 2-night stay at the Westin Maldives Resort. That’s not all, you can redeem your points at over 7000+ hotels worldwide, you can also transfer to miles with more than 40 airlines and access to over 900+ airport lounges and airport transfers in the UAE.

With the Marriot Bonvoy world Mastercard from Emirates NBD you can get a complimentary Gold Elite status and receive a late checkout for 2pm, don’t know about you guys but I love a late checkout!

Finally, once you renew your card annually you can redeem it for a free night anniversary stay… now tell me I didn’t convince you to go get a card right away?

Plus size guide to summer fashion with Karen Millen

by Lina Clémence June 4, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Written by

Lauren Nicole Coppin Campbell

This article is in collaboration with Karen Millen.

Shopping as a plus-size woman has felt more like a nightmare task than a leisure activity for far too long. When very few brands care to invest in their curve collections, the mission to find pieces that are of high quality, fairly affordable and on-trend is a feat. But, things are beginning to change. More and more brands are noticing an overwhelming demand, and as a result, are extending their lines and introducing curve collections. But who should be on your radar? Well, it just so happens to be Karen Millen.

Known for their occasion wear and chic silhouettes, the retailer has branched out and created a range of curve pieces available in size 18 to 24. No more are the days of settling for outdated styles that make you feel far more mature than you are or the other extreme of overly sexy styles and silhouettes that don’t always work for everyday looks. Karen Millen is filling a massive gap in the market by providing styles that take inspiration from what we see on the runway and in magazines. Thereby giving the fat fashion babes exactly what they need. So, I’ve pulled together some of my favourite looks that I think could work for you this season, no matter the occasion.

Pop of colour

As someone who is a proud member of the “go bold or go home” committee, there’s no better time than Spring/Summer to wear colour and Karen Millen isn’t lacking. Forget the muted tones and add a pop of colour into the mix, like this jumpsuit. Not only will you gorgeous in the sunshine, but it’s scientifically proven that wearing colour helps to boost moods. So, why not wear something that quite literally could spark joy? For some fun styling, I’ve mixed some prints by including my beloved Zebra print bag and gingham mules to take the look to the next level.

SHOP: Curve Luxe Gold Trim Detail Jumpsuit, £107.40, Karen Millen; Bow High Heeled Mules In Gingham, £35, ASOS.

Safari Chic

But if colour isn’t your thing. Allow me to introduce you to my friend. The safari chic trend is one that’s been around for years and, much like florals, pops up ever so often, and while many of us might not be going on the safari trip, we’ve always dreamed of. The chic adventurer style is happening, and it’s happening now. Thankfully for us curvy girls, Karen Millen has us sorted. Offering various styles from belted shirts to pleated dresses, KM is giving the girls sandy toned goodness this season. If this trend is exciting your inner traveller, I’d suggest creating a monochromatic look this season. Like the fashion IT girls of last season, try creating a head-to-toe beige/brown look. I’d advise incorporating lighter colours, but there’s no harm in keeping it dark this season.

Show off those legs

One of the difficult parts of entering Summer is the amplified body image issues many experience. Unfortunately, warmer weather can cause anxiety and trigger self-esteem issues. But this year, I’m really championing stepping outside of your comfort zone. As much as I worry about the appearance of my cellulite, stretch marks and stomach, the one thing I’ve learnt in the last year is just how short life is. Despite the hang ups I have around my body, I never want to look back on a moment and regret not experiencing, doing or wearing what I wanted. It’s minuscule in the grand scheme of things, but I know firsthand what it’s like to not want to go somewhere or wear something in fear that I’ll be judged. And this year it stops.

So, this summer, step out of your comfort zone! That doesn’t mean wear all the things you ‘hate’ at once but start slowly. A great way to do that is by incorporating more skirts into your wardrobe. As silly as it may sound to some, wearing a skirt can be a daunting experience. But as we start to make a conscious effort to own our bodies, wearing the things that once made us feel uncomfortable can become an empowering action. If you’re wondering where to begin, Karen Millen has a great selection of skirts. From denim to a-line, knit and mini, here are some of the best KM have on offer.

While the plus-size fashion industry still has a long way to go, the launch of Karen Millen’s curve collection feels like a step in the right direction. Rather than creating styles that can’t be found in their main range. The curve collection mirrors the style and feel of the main range. I look forward to seeing what’s next from the brand.

Where to staycation in London: Royal Lancaster London

by Lina Clémence June 4, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

As restrictions continue to lift and staycation plans across the nation resume, there’s one place in the heart of London calling for you to visit. The Royal Lancaster London, located 2 minutes from Lancaster Gate station, offers luxury and impressive views overlooking London that will guarantee you a night or weekend of fun, indulgence and sightseeing.

The iconic mid-century building has undergone significant renovation in the last couple of years to be reborn as a stunning five-star. Its new and improved opulent design glows with sophistication and offers guests 411 rooms across 18 floors. From the grand entrance to each hotel room, premium retro reigns supreme with geometric brushed gold and 1960’s inspired booths; the hotel is an Instagrammer’s dream. And trust me, we saw first-hand plenty of women getting their snaps for ‘gram before their night out.

So, whether you’ve missed important celebrations with loved ones over the last year, need an indulgent break or are simply eager to rediscover the city, Royal Lancaster London has it covered!

The Room

As soon as we opened the door of our corner Park Suite, we were greeted by the most incredible views of London. The living room and bathroom overlooked views of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, while the London skyline dazzled from the bedroom. There was a certain air of stepping into the role of a wealthy Londoner, and we very much revelled in it.

What’s for breakfast?

Head to the restaurant for an exquisite breakfast spread, buffet-style, including everything from fresh fruits to warm pastries and a full English. But if none of that is picking your fancy, feel free to order from the menu. But, I would advise making sure you try the scrambled eggs. I’d argue they were quite possibly the best eggs I’ve ever had.

How about lunch and dinner?

While we didn’t have lunch or dinner at the hotel, I’m told Nipa Thai is popular among guests and Londoners. Described as one of the most incredible Thai restaurants you can visit, it’s only an elevator journey away when staying at the hotel. With authenticity at the heart of everything they do, from their décor to their traditional all-female, all-Thai kitchen, led by Head Chef Sanguan Parr, Nipa Thai is a must-try. I’m very disappointed we already had a dinner reservation somewhere else.

Where should we go if we want to eat out?

But if Thai cuisine isn’t for you, the hotel staff are more than happy to arrange a cab to take you into Mayfair, Soho, Fitzvoria or anywhere else. I’d personally recommend, Park Chinos or Hakkasan in Mayfair, or Ham Yard Bar and Restaurant in Soho.

Who should we bring?

Whether you need some alone time and like the idea of doing that in the setting of luxury, or you fancy a night of fun with your partner or best friend, the Royal Lancaster London is the perfect spot. Why not enjoy an afternoon of shopping and sightseeing, soak in the tub and then get ready for a night out of fun in the heart of London. Now, you’ve got to answer if that sounds better alone or with your partner in crime.

Ozempic and the After Effects of Covid: A Grim Forecast for the Future of Plus Size Fashion?

by Lina Clémence June 4, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

The world of fashion has long been a dynamic and ever-evolving industry, reflecting societal trends and cultural shifts. As the co-founder of theCURVYcon and a catalyst for change in the evolution of plus size fashion, I’ve found myself concerned that a lot of the work my colleagues and I have done appears to dramatically been undone in just a swift few years.  Plus size fashion was once barreling towards being this bustling industry and now has taken a hard hit of progression and seems to be moving backwards. Recent developments have thrown a shadow of uncertainty over the future of one particular niche: plus size fashion. The convergence of two distinct factors—Ozempic, a weight loss medication, and the lingering aftereffects of the Covid-19 pandemic—has raised concerns about the potential challenges that lie ahead for this industry. This article delves into the potential implications of these combined influences and examines whether a grim forecast awaits the future of plus size fashion.

Ozempic: A Game-Changer in Weight Management

Ozempic, a brand name for semaglutide, is a medication primarily used to treat type 2 diabetes. It has garnered attention not only for its efficacy in managing blood sugar levels but also for its potential to aid in weight loss. Clinical trials have shown that Ozempic can lead to significant weight reduction in individuals without diabetes as well. While this might be celebrated as a breakthrough in combating obesity, it poses a unique challenge for the plus size fashion industry.

The rise of Ozempic as a weight management tool has the potential to reshape the demographics of the plus size fashion market. What makes Ozempic different from Weight Loss Surgery is it’s accessibility in cost and it’s a much less drastic option to lose weight making it a much easier option to try. As individuals experience weight loss due to the medication, they may transition out of the plus size category, leading to a smaller customer base for this segment. This shift could compel fashion retailers and designers to reevaluate their business strategies and product offerings, potentially resulting in a decreased focus on plus size options. Consequently, the very existence of dedicated plus size fashion lines could be at stake. I think it’s important for people to get their health in check, I ponder if this is the writing on the wall for the industry as a whole and because of a shrinking market do the people who still need plus size clothing get what need.

Covid-19’s Lingering Effects

The Covid-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on numerous industries, fashion being no exception. Supply chain disruptions, temporary and permanent closures of brick-and-mortar stores, and changing consumer behaviors significantly impacted the fashion world. Even as the pandemic recedes, its aftereffects continue to reverberate. The uncertainty and economic challenges left in its wake have reshaped consumer priorities and spending habits. The once profitable work wardrobe is no longer a necessity that is once was shrinking consumer spending on clothing.

As the world emerges from the pandemic, the fashion industry is grappling with changed perceptions of body image and fashion aesthetics. Lockdowns and social isolation prompted individuals to reevaluate their priorities, including health and well-being. This shift in mindset could lead to increased demand for healthier lifestyles and weight management solutions like Ozempic, further influencing the plus size fashion landscape.

Navigating the Uncertain Terrain

While the combined influence of Ozempic and Covid-19’s aftermath presents a potentially grim outlook for plus size fashion, there are avenues for adaptation and growth. Fashion designers and retailers can respond to changing consumer needs by focusing on inclusivity and diversity. Instead of solely catering to a specific size range, they can embrace a broader range of body types and provide clothing options that resonate with various stages of weight management.  This was the world that many wanted to create with full size range instead of separated sections of misses and plus.

Moreover, collaborations between the health and fashion industries could yield innovative solutions. Designers could partner with healthcare professionals to create adaptive clothing lines that accommodate individuals undergoing weight changes due to medications like Ozempic. This approach not only addresses the evolving needs of consumers but also fosters a more holistic and empathetic approach to fashion.  As person who’s lost 160ish pounds I used services like Rent the Runway while in transition to supplement my wardrobe in a cost effective way.

The intersection of Ozempic and the lingering effects of Covid-19 has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the future of plus size fashion. As individuals increasingly turn to weight management solutions and embrace healthier lifestyles, the landscape of the plus size market may shift. However, this transformation need not signal the demise of plus size fashion. By embracing inclusivity, diversity, and collaboration, the industry can navigate the evolving terrain and create a future that caters to the needs and aspirations of all individuals, regardless of size or circumstance.

Sis,

It feels so good to get back into thrifting! I took a bit of a hiatus last year because to be honest, I was not finding much at the thrift when I would go. With the growing popularity of thrifting, it was not leaving much on the racks to discover in my area. So, I took a break and during that break, I discovered my love of estate sales. I was actually leaving an estate sale recently one Saturday morning when I decided to drop into Goodwill. I started this new year optimistic about thrifting again and my first thrift trip of the year was so fruitful.

You know they say that the beginning and end of the year is a good time to thrift because of so many people cleaning out their homes for tax season. I could not believe how full the racks were. I found so much! Plus, because of my new love for estate sales, I have broadened my horizons to thrifting more than accessories and clothing. I have started thrifting more housewares, such as glasses, utensils and more.

As I have been getting back into it, I thought it would be helpful to share some of the most common things you can find at the thrift store. It’s not limited to clothes and the best part is that EVERYONE can find something.

The Seven Easiest Items to Thrift

1. Outerwear

Outerwear is by far one of my favorite things to thrift because of the ability to find high quality pieces. You can find amazing vintage blazers, coats and more at the thrift store. Plus, you can find trendy ones, statement ones, etc.

2. Housewares

Whether you have an upcoming dinner party or you’re just in the market for items for home, the thrift store is the perfect place to find affordable housewares. I’ve found everything from formal dinner plates to cute, pink glasses. I’m still even giddy about the perfect measuring cup I got for $1.

3. Dresses & Skirts

There are always plenty of dresses and skirts available every time I go to the thrift store. I love that you can find the denim dresses that our teachers used to wear back in the day and even fashionable skirts that you give you Clueless vibes.

4. Children’s Clothing

The children’s section surprisingly does not have many people in it when I go thrifting; however, so many people are missing out on quality clothing in that section. New or very gently used children’s clothes are donated often so it’s a great place to find a variety of children’s clothes.

5. Accessories

Accessories are typically my second favorite thing to find while thrifting. You can find high quality pieces at the thrift store like great costume jewelry, silk scarves, hats and more. Since I love layering jewelry, I absolutely cannot leave the thrift store without checking the section to see what gems I can find. I found a beautiful gold necklace marked down to $2 recently!

6. Jeans

If you are in need of jeans, check out your local thrift store! They usually have racks on racks on racks of jeans and you can find every fit from baggy to straight leg. If you are someone looking to distress a pair of jeans yourself, the thrift store is the perfect place to grab an affordable pair.

7. Graphic Tees

Thrifted graphic tees have my heart! They can be a bit trickier to find due to resellers often scoping them out, but there’s nothing like finding a vintage graphic tee at the thrift store. I have found some of the quirkiest tees. One of my favorite finds is a Tupac tee that my husband actually found for me while thrifting in Winston Salem.

What is your favorite thing to find at the thrift store?

I think we’ve all seen enough trackies to last us a lifetime. I’ll admit it’s been a necessity to choose comfort in your own home but it’s also done something to our psyche (well at least ours…) It’s made us that little bit more complacent and lazy with a ‘I’ll do it tomorrow’ kind of attitude. The kind of attitude that doesn’t do it tomorrow but instead indulges and sinks further into the couch.

Now that 2021 is in full swing and Spring & Summer will be here before we can even blink, there’s no excuse. We’re also looking ahead with a dash of hope (despite the inevitable fluctuations of the tier systems that will most likely prevail for the majority of the year.) and starting to shift our wardrobe perspectives.

Below we’ve selected a few of our current fave pieces. Let’s call it style mixed with comfort. Even in the parameters of your own home, it’s nice to wear a nice outfit (shove on some slippers too) to put you in right mindset that makes you feel like a go-getter rather than a lazy couch potato.
