TRAVEL | Explore Carolina Beach & Kure Beach

by Lina Clémence June 26, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

*Thanks to the Wilmington and Beaches Convention & Visitors Bureau for sponsoring this post*

My 9-5 life has been crazy busy and there isn’t much time for a weeklong vacation, so I’ve been intentional about exploring my own backyard for fall getaways. The NC coast is full of fun, history, wildlife, and good eats so it was a no brainer to head there to relax, decompress and rest. I chose to spend a weekend in Carolina Beach & Kure Beach. Although they share the same island, they have such different vibes. Also, the area is very lowkey, so it has a very authentic feel that’s not diminished by tons of tourists.

Whether you’re traveling solo, with your girlfriends, or with your family, you’ll find there’s something for you to do in Carolina Beach & Kure Beach!

Things to Do:

Sunrise Yoga – If there’s a vacation experience, I believe every person should have its sunrise yoga with Salty Dog Yoga & Surf in Kure Beach, NC. This class takes place right on the beach and encourages you to slow down and get in tune with nature. If you’re lucky you may see a pair of dolphins!

The Fat Pelican – I’m a sucker for all things nostalgic! The Fat Pelican reminds me of the late 90’s arcade scene, there are lots of video games to play and plenty of space to kickback with your friends or make new ones on “Pelican Beach” which is right behind the bar! If you enjoy beer, you must add The Fat Pelican to your Carolina Beach bucket list. They have a walk-in cooler with more than 300 types of beer and wine!

Eat Local – There are so many local eateries in Carolina Beach and Kure Beach that it was hard for me to narrow down which restaurants were a MUST to try. So, I decided to share all of them that I tried! Kickstart you day with breakfast at Malama Cafe.Whether you’re in the mood for a sweet breakfast or something savory, Malama Cafe has a healthy and tasty option for you. For lunch, Jack Mackerels Island Grill aka Jack Macks is spot for the freshest and most filling shrimp po’ boy on the island. Don’t forget to add the house made Old Bay chips! Enjoy dinner and a brew with a view at Carolina Smokehouse on the Carolina Beach Boardwalk. The smoked wings covered in their house made BBQ is top tier! After dinner, walk over to Havana’s for the most decadent chocolate cake in the Carolinas!

Carolina Beach State Park – The highlight of my weekend getaway in Carolina Beach was hiking through Carolina Beach State Park. The hike was led by Stephanie, a park ranger and environmental enthusiast! She led us through the Venus Flytrap trail that is home to over 5 different habitats. We were able to get up close and personal with several carnivorous flytraps and I realized they are 100000x smaller than they’re portrayed on TV. This hiking trail is wheelchair accessible and only 0.5 miles long so it’s great for beginners.

North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher – Have you ever seen baby otters? There is a family of Asian otters at the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher in Kure Beach, and their otter pups are the cutest things I ever seen! Sharks, rays, starfish, sea turtles, an albino alligator and many other marine animals call this aquarium home, and the staff is very knowledgeable about every single one.

Where to Stay:

When choosing accommodations for your stay, there’s one choice I’d recommend over and over again: The Beach Dragon. The Beach Dragon is a newly built luxury beach home managed by Carolina Beach Realty only 3 blocks from the heart of downtown Kure Beach and offers stunning views of the ocean. Honestly, you don’t need to leave the house for anything. There’s a heated pool, private access to the beach, a game room, and large living room stocked with Roku TV’s, board games, books, and plenty of Blu-Ray movies for you to choose from! The home is equipped with luxury amenities including a full-sized kitchen, family style dining table, and large windows that fill the entire house with lots natural light. The hosts of this vacation home went above and beyond to ensure my stay was comfortable.

Carolina Beach and Kure Beach have become two of my favorite places to explore in North Carolina because of their authentic vibes, natural beauty, food scene and rich history. I look forward to hearing all about your NC coast travels in the Fat Girls Travel, Too! Facebook group.

I just have the worst luck with Jeans! Actually regardless of what size you are, the perfect pair of jeans are notoriously hard to find. These tapered Boyfriend jeans i wanted to try, as my usual go to of the ASOS Ridley jeans was the only style i had purchased.

Ordered 2 sizes 24 & 26- 24 was a no, so 26 seemed ok- with a lil room to spare, a few days later after washing, the room to spare some how became too much. I couldnt figure out, was i bloated or did the jeans loosen in the wash? Either way i was in too deep with these to be able to return them.

For now my solution has been to pull one side of the front over the other, essentially wrapping over the button area to clinch the waist in and securing with a safety pin. Not convenient but the guilt of spending almost $90.00 on something that would just be tossed away is like flushing money down the toilet – I need to make these work!

If possible- and if it doesn’t cost the earth, i could take these to get altered, possibly get the waist and legs brought in & if theres any solution for that gap above the butt -where the jeans dont close against your back.
You know where you could look down and see my undies in a standing position, that massive platform like gap,
am i the only one?

ok, first world problems, ill let this be

Wave Garden Spa Review – Ixora Hotel Wales

by Lina Clémence June 24, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

After an exciting Wales road trip exploring castles, coastlines, and tearooms, we couldn’t have ended on a better note than with a visit to the Wave Garden Spa at the Ixora Hotel & Spa. It was always the plan to go in the spa just before we started our journey home, so that I could fully enjoy myself without having to worry about my red hair. It’s been a while since I reviewed a spa so be sure to go see my other reviews!

Wave Garden Spa Review - Ixora Hotel Wales

Wave Garden Spa Review – Ixora Hotel Wales

First Impressions

Set against the backdrop of the stunning Welsh countryside, the Wave Garden Spa at the Ixora Hotel & Spa immediately made us exhale. You’re surrounded by mountains, forests, and the kind of quiet that I can only dream of finding in everyday life. There was so much outdoor space and it was utilised really well with lots of comfortable loungers and seating options.

The spa does have it’s own access but you can also get to it via the Ixora Hotel lobby.

Wave Garden Spa Facilities:

This is where the Wave Garden Spa really shines. You’ve got:

I’m a water baby so I spent most of my time in the outdoor pool before heading to the hydrotherapy pool. The views are unreal, whether you’re in the pool or just sat wrapped up in your robe, it’s total peace. We headed there for opening at 9am and had the first hour completely alone which was really special, so I would definitely recommend this.

We didn’t have any treatments but we definitely will if we go again.

Accessibility

As an ambulatory wheelchair user, I’ve learned to do my research before booking anywhere. The good news? Ixora Hotel takes accessibility seriously, and you can tell it’s been thought through. The Wave Garden Spa did fall a little short though. There’s a designated accessible changing room and shower, but it was full of storage baskets. I did ask about this and they do move them when someone tells them they’ll need to use the accessible changing room, but hidden disabilities exist and I don’t think you should have to ask for it to be accessible.

The spa itself is step-free right for everything except the pools. That’s where things are a little trickier, there are no pool hoists and the steps into the hydrotherapy and infinity pools are very high, but if you’re ambulatory, there are rails on both sides. So I found it very doable but lots of people wouldn’t.

I just found it a bit strange as there are quite a lot of accessible rooms and it feels like accessibility has really been thought about here so I really feel like the spa should and easily could reflect that too. By keeping the changing room clear at all times and getting a pool hoist.

That said, the robes are XL and actually fit, which doesn’t actually happen often. I’m a size 20 and Alfie’s a 2XL and we both felt comfortable. I don’t think they’d fit anyone bigger though which is a real shame.

Wave Garden Spa Review - Ixora Hotel Wales 1Wave Garden Spa Review - Ixora Hotel Wales

Would We Go Back?

Absolutely. There’s just something special about this place. It’s calm, it’s beautiful, and it doesn’t try too hard, it just is good. And while a few accessibility tweaks (like a pool hoist and accessible changing room being cleared at all times) would make it perfect, the overall atmosphere and thoughtful details make it one of our new favourites.

We left the Wave Garden Spa feeling refreshed, restored, and already plotting our next visit. If you’re heading to North Wales and looking for a spa that blends nature, peace, and serious spa features, Ixora Hotel & Spa is the one.

Wales Road Trip – Accessible Travel In Wales

by Lina Clémence June 24, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

When looking for somewhere to celebrate Alfie’s 31st birthday, we really had no idea where we wanted to go. We had it in our minds that we wanted to do a road trip and even considered driving to Germany but then a friend said how beautiful North Wales was and that was it! As soon as I started looking, I couldn’t stop.

There was so much to see and do, and the fact it was only a 2 hour drive away to get to Wales was really appealing. We decided we’d do a little Wales road trip around the north of Wales and it was so beautiful. As an ambulatory wheelchair user, we found some great places for accessibility, and others that were only doable because I can walk short distances.

Day 1 Wales Road Trip

Stop 1: Gwrych Castle

Wales Road Trip - Accessible Travel in Wales, Gwrych Castle

We nearly turned around when we saw how difficult the terrain was here, but if you head into the ticket office and let them know you’re using a mobility aid and you can park further up on flatter, less rocky grounds! It is the most beautiful castle I’ve ever seen and being able to explore it was so magical. I would highly recommend a power chair as it’s all mostly uphill, but there is a large area where you park that you can see a lot of the castle. At £11 for two of us, I think it’s a great price and they do a great job at making it accessible so more people can enjoy it.

@georginagrogan_ Gwrych Castle Wales wheelchair accessibility was super surprising! @Gwrych Castle Head into the office and let them know you’re using a mobility aid and you can park further up on flatter, less rocky grounds! We loved exploring Gwrych Castle, it is truly beautiful! #wales #visitwales #GwrychCastle #wheelchairuser #accessibletravel ♬ original sound – Georgina Grogan

Stop 2: Llandudno

Llandudno, wales road trip

This is an absolutely beautiful seaside town that is really flat and easy to get around. We headed to the pier which was so busy (we visited on a Sunday) before heading for lunch a little further down where it was quieter. I quickly googled for seafood recommendations and Dylan’s Restaurant came up as a great spot. It’s a fully wheelchair accessible restaurant with a great accessible toilet, and everything really impressed us. We absolutely loved our food and really recommend it. They have several branches around North Wales and even have some shops and bakeries!

Stop 3: Conwy Castle

Conwy Castle

Conwy Castle is absolutely incredible, it’s so grand and you can see it for miles around. It isn’t wheelchair accessible though but they do let you know that straight away and give you a lot of information. They actually don’t even charge wheelchair users to go in, or their companions, because they realise you might not be able to see much! You will have to be able to navigate up a very steep hill, and then walk up 15 steps, with more random steps throughout, as well as lots of towers. I managed to get into the great hall and then let Alfie go and explore more. There are such stunning views here and I’m so glad we went in!

@georginagrogan_ Conwy Castle Wales is not wheelchair accessible, but they let you know at the ticket office and don’t charge you to go in! It’s up a steep incline and then 15 steps, with more steps inside. If you’re ambulatory and can manage it’s so beautiful with stunning views! #visitwales #wales #ambulatorywheelchairuser #conwy #conwycastle #walestravel ♬ original sound – Georgina Grogan

Stop 4: Conwy

The Smallest House In Great Britain, conwy, wales

Conwy is such a beautiful little town, I actually found it quite easy to get around although most shops and restaurants would have been a struggle. We went to visit The Smallest House In Great Britain, which I didn’t realise if you get there within opening times, you can actually go in! We just had a photo outside and carried on exploring Conwy.

Stop 5: Ixora hotel

Ixora Hotel

I picked the Ixora Hotel for us to stay at as it seemed quite central to where we wanted to explore and it’s a really beautiful hotel. If you’re doing a Wales road trip, I would definitely suggest this to be a place you stop! The accessible rooms were really impressive too but I have a full blog review on them.

Stop 6: Fairy Falls (failed)

fairy falls wales

We were so in love with Wales that we decided to try and visit a waterfall that wasn’t too far away. We followed the instructions of where to park, and then followed the route up an extremely steep hill, I felt like I was going to fall back out of my chair. That’s when the torrential rain started and we had to run back to the car, on full speed for me! Fairy Falls does sound like a lovely place to visit but I wouldn’t say wheelchair friendly based off the parking situation and just gaining access to the route.

Stop 7: The Old Ship

the old ship wales

This was a very random pick but oh my goodness, some of the best food we’ve ever had. We still drool thinking about it! We headed into this little pub just before they stopped taking food orders (they were closing earlier that day), and we were so grateful that they let us order. We didn’t have chance to read the menu properly and both ordered the lamb, but it ended up being half a lamb shoulder and it was flipping huge. The best lamb ever though, and we kept complimenting them! If you’re in the area, we’d both highly recommend.

Day 2:

Stop 1: Aber Falls

aber falls wales

This is described online and by others, as an wheelchair accessible route to a beautiful waterfall. I nearly fell out of my chair, feared for my life and I’m surprised my chair didn’t completely break, but it was magical and we absolutely loved it. I’d actually say if you do have a similar chair and you’re ambulatory, or a better chair with a 4 wheel drive, it’s well worth it. But I wouldn’t attempt it as a manual user or transit user, because it’s really rocky, uneven, up steep slopes, and overall quite a difficult trail. They advertise it as ‘accessible for all’ but a couple people on food stopped us to ask how we were getting on (they knew wheelchair users or had disabled children that used chairs) and said how much they were struggling.

Is Aber Falls actually wheelchair accessible? It really does depend on your type of chair and your disability. It’s possible for some people, but it is definitely not an easy trail.

@georginagrogan_ Aber Falls in North Wales is described as an accessible trail to the waterfall, but is it? My chair only really struggling towards the waterfall, most of the trail was doable but quite painful! You definitely need a power chair or power attachment, I wouldn’t recommend for manual wheelchair users or pushing someone sadly! Aber falls is really beautiful though and I’m so glad we experienced it! #aberfalls #wales #northwales #ambulatorywheelchairuser #accessibletravel ♬ original sound – Georgina Grogan

Stop 2: Bodnant Gardens

bodnant gardens wales

If you want something absolutely stunning and that has really great accessibility, the National Trust Bodnant Gardens is a true beauty. There are two paths marked with red for easy, or blue for harder and they take marking those paths very seriously. We had such a gorgeous time here, it was a welcome break for my chair with much easier terrain, so many gorgeous flowers, and we kept seeing people coming away with some, so we had to go buy a few plants for my friend.

There’s an accessible cafe at the entrance (before you pay to go in) and accessible toilet. It costs us £18 for two. (Please note wheelchair users and companions do get different rates for lots of places.)

@georginagrogan_ Bodnant Gardens – North Wales Looking for something wheelchair accessible to do in north wales? It’s a National Trust garden and it’s absolutely beautiful. There’s a red route for wheelchairs and prams and a blue route for a less easy route. With accessible parking, accessible cafe, and wheelchairs to hire, Bodnant Gardens is a gorgeous day out! @National Trust #northwales #wales #visitwales #bodnantgardens #nationaltrust #ambulatorywheelchairuser #accessibletravel ♬ original sound – Georgina Grogan

Stop 3: Tu Hwnt L’r Bont Tearooms

Tu Hwnt L'r Bont TearoomsTu Hwnt L'r Bont Tearooms

How can you go to Wales without visiting the most photographed house in Wales? We were told that the tearooms had scaffolding up, but it’s off now and they’ve just removed the greenery on the roof to do vital repairs so the house can be enjoyed for many more years to come. It’s still so beautiful. We made a point to go in and support them, as I imagine they might have lost custom with the scaffolding so Alfie had the welsh rarebit and I had some coffee cake, that was so nice I took the rest back with me! It’s not wheelchair accessible (obviously, but you know I still have to say) and I didn’t see a toilet so please bear this in mind.

Stop 4: Betws-Y-Coed

Betws-Y-Coed

Honestly everywhere in Wales was absolutely stunning but I knew we had to add this to our Wales road trip plans. It’s such a gorgeous little town, with a waterfall that’s really easy to get to and see (it’s on the bridge.) We pitched up for a while to enjoy the sun, people watch, and have a little drink. There are lots of lovely bars, restaurants, and shops so we also bought some more gifts for our family too.

Stop 5: Groes Inn

Groes Inn wales

Alfie made his own list of places he wanted to try for our Wales road trip and this was on it. The food in Wales really did impress us, I wasn’t expecting it to be such a foodie trip but we were really blown away. With this being our last meal, we really took our time. We sat outside in the sun, attempted to play Uno and ordered some starters to share, which included the best duck spring rolls of my life. They were that good, we ordered more for our mains!

We’d actually go back to Wales just for the food, but the views? The people? Everything is just beautiful there.

For day 3 we spent the morning at the Wave Garden Spa before heading home, but there is so much to do and see, you could easily extend a Wales road trip and see so much more. For us, this was a perfect taste of Wales and left us wanting more!

Have you visited Wales before?

Because Representation Matters: Celebrating Signed Blake Amazon Drop and more dark skin women in fashion.

by Lina Clémence June 23, 2025

Not to say the fashion industry has been given a bad rap for their unrealistic expectation of beauty, and rightfully so.  If you are following fashion, you may have noticed how brands of all price points have begin changing the standard and making new efforts to represent black influencers and models.

From magazine covers to commercials and campaigns, the familiar thread of models or influencers with similar build, ethnicity, and age still reflects the industry’s so-called norm. And while the increased presence of black influencers in fashion has generally constituted a positive change, there are still many issues on the forefront concerning the representation of dark skin women in fashion.

Today myself and a few friends celebrate and support Chicago lawyer and content creator, Blake Gifford of Signed, Blake. The recent drop of her curated collection on Amazon’s The Drop features a beautiful pallet of fall florals and texture perfect for the early spring to fall transition. With that in mind, it is always exciting to see wins come down the pipeline for the women who have made the industry notice them for their phenomenal taste in fashion and style.

Make sure you check out Chasi of Sweat and Mascara and LaToya of The FatGirl of Fashion.

| 10 Little Luxuries I Can’t Live Without |

by Lina Clémence June 22, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

In our busy lives, it’s often the little luxuries that make our daily routines more enjoyable. While these items aren’t essentials for survival, they do elevate my day-to-day experience and add a sprinkle of joy to the mundane. Here are ten material things that I simply can’t imagine living without.

1. A Good Book to Read

There’s nothing quite like curling up with a captivating novel. A good book transports me to different worlds, offering a much-needed escape from reality. Whether it’s a gripping thriller or a heartwarming romance, having a great read on hand always enhances my downtime.

2. Fragrance

Whether it’s for my home or myself, lovely and luxurious scents can instantly uplift my mood. A few spritzes of a delightful fragrance or lighting a beautifully scented candle creates a serene atmosphere and makes every space feel inviting. It’s amazing how a simple scent can transform the ambiance of my day.

3. Summer Fridays Lip Balm

My love for lip balm is real, and Summer Fridays has become a staple in my collection. I adore the different colors for various occasions: the clear version for the gym, beige and pink for daytime outings, and bold reds or dark browns for evenings out. Each shade not only nourishes my lips but also enhances my overall look.

4. Skin & Me Skincare

Customized skincare is a game changer, and Skin & Me delivers just that. By consulting with a dermatologist, I can create a formula tailored to my unique skin needs. This personalized approach has improved my complexion significantly, making my skincare routine feel indulgent and effective.

5. White T-Shirts

A classic white t-shirt is a wardrobe essential that never goes out of style. I love investing in luxury versions, but I can’t resist the HM cotton tees that are only $8. They’re so affordable that I refresh my collection each season. Their versatility allows me to layer them in countless ways, making them a year-round favorite.

6. Jewelry

Jewelry adds that extra sparkle to any outfit, and I believe it’s an essential part of my everyday routine. No matter your personal style, the right accessories can elevate even the simplest looks, making getting ready feel a little more glamorous.

7. High-Waisted Blue Jeans

High-waisted blue jeans are a timeless staple in my wardrobe. Their versatility allows me to dress them up or down, making them suitable for any occasion. They’re comfortable and flattering, proving to be a classic choice that never fails me.

8. Coffee

Yes, coffee is a basic necessity, but it’s also a little luxury I look forward to every morning. The simple act of brewing a fresh cup, especially in a favorite mug, sets the tone for my day. The aroma and warmth of coffee are like a comforting hug, sparking joy from the moment I wake up.

9. Skims Underwear

Comfort is key, and there’s nothing worse than wearing uncomfortable underwear. Skims has transformed my daily routine with its soft, breathable fabrics that fit perfectly. Feeling good in my underwear makes a world of difference in how I carry myself throughout the day.

10. Digital Calendar & Notes App

I know this is technically two items, but for me, they go hand in hand. My digital calendar keeps my schedule organized, while the notes app allows me to jot down lists and reminders. I thrive on planning, and having everything written down helps me stay focused and productive.

These ten little luxuries may not be essential for survival, but they certainly enrich my life. From the comfort of my favorite lip balm to the indulgence of a personalized skincare routine, each item plays a role in making my days a little brighter and more enjoyable. It’s a reminder that sometimes, it’s the small things that can have the biggest impact on our well-being. What are some of your little luxuries that you can’t live without?

| New Year, Better Me |

by Lina Clémence June 22, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

It’s that magical time of the year again! The festive season fades, and with it comes the urge to hit the reset button on life. Whether it’s picking up where you left off or closing a few chapters to make space for new ones, the New Year always feels like an invitation to start fresh. I’ve been looking forward to writing this blog throughout December. Part of me wishes Christmas would linger a little longer, while the other part eagerly anticipates sitting down with a glass of Pinot Noir, jazz playing softly in the background, and putting my thoughts into words.

Writing this blog and creating my vision board has become a cherished ritual. It gives clarity to what I need to focus on and highlights areas that deserve more attention. This post isn’t about a “new year, new me.” I’ve worked hard to become the person I am today and have no intention of reinventing myself. Instead, I embrace the idea of “new year, better me.” There’s always room for growth, and I’m excited to share how I plan to make 2025 my most balanced and fulfilling year yet.

Reflecting on the Past Year

Last year was a journey of growth and discovery. Many items from my vision board came to life—not perfectly, but in ways that felt meaningful and encouraging. It’s a wonderful feeling to look back and see the progress I’ve made, even in small steps. I’m truly proud of how I’ve worked on my intentions and made strides in different areas of my life.

As I step into this new year, my focus is on finding better ways to manage my life and expanding my goals with intention. I want to dive deeper into what inspires personal growth and create space for hobbies and experiences that bring joy and fulfillment. It’s about building on the foundation I’ve laid and embracing opportunities to grow even more.

2025 Resolutions

This year, I’m excited to adopt some hobbies that promise joy, creativity, and a better sense of balance. Here are a few that have caught my attention:

  • Activity-Based Outings: This year, I want to incorporate more activity-based outings with loved ones. Whether it’s pottery, cooking, painting, gardening, or attending unique one-night classes, these experiences not only create wonderful memories but also strengthen relationships.
  • Intentional Gift-Giving: Moving beyond just objects, I want to focus on giving experiences that build deeper bonds. Whether it’s a shared adventure or a meaningful moment, these gifts can leave a lasting impression.
  • Embracing Change: Life doesn’t always go according to plan, and I want to work on responding with grace rather than frustration. Adopting a mindset that allows for flexibility and focusing on creating new plans when things shift will help me approach challenges with a calmer perspective.
  • Workout and Well-Being: This is something that appears on my list every year, but last year I didn’t commit to it as much as I wanted. In 2024, I aim to make morning or evening walks at least three times a week and strength training or Pilates two to three times a week a non-negotiable habit—just like washing my face. Building this routine into my life is essential for both my physical and mental health.
  • Reading More Books: I want to dive into books that inspire, educate, and entertain. Setting aside dedicated reading time will help me explore new worlds and ideas.
  • Listening to Impactful Podcasts: This year, I’ll focus on podcasts that challenge my perspective, teach valuable lessons, and leave me feeling motivated.
  • Traveling to New Places: I plan to visit at least three destinations I’ve never been to before. Exploring new environments and cultures always brings a fresh perspective and enriches my life.
  • Better Financial Habits: I’m committed to improving my financial planning and spending more intentionally. It’s about aligning my purchases with my values and focusing on long-term stability.
  • Moving into a New Space: One of my goals for this year is to find and move into a space that better aligns with my lifestyle and goals. Creating a fresh, inspiring environment can make a world of difference in day-to-day living.
  • Elevate: For those who’ve followed my journey from the start, you know how much work it took to get here. Nothing was handed to me, and I continue to put in the effort every day. I want to celebrate it & continue to elevate in every aspect of my life.
  • Growing My Social Media: I want to be more active across all platforms. Creating content brings me so much joy, and I’m excited to share more. Inspiring others is my passion, and I plan to pour more energy into it this year.

As we step into the New Year, let’s leave behind the pressure of perfection and instead focus on progress. “New Year, Better Me” isn’t about drastic changes; it’s about embracing who we are while making thoughtful improvements. Whether it’s setting clear goals, picking up a new hobby, or simply savoring life’s little joys, 2025 is a fresh canvas waiting for your unique touch.

I’m truly grateful for the life I have and the opportunities to grow each year. As you can see, my goals aren’t extremely big, and that’s intentional. Over the years, I’ve learned that when it comes to setting goals, taking small steps toward the bigger picture is the most effective approach. Huge goals can feel overwhelming and discouraging when they take longer to achieve. However, breaking them down into manageable steps keeps the journey motivating and attainable.

So, grab your vision board supplies, pour that glass of wine, and let’s make this year unforgettable.

SOMEBUNNY LOVES YOU.

by Lina Clémence June 21, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

No matter how hard it gets, no matter how alone or isolated I may feel; alone on an island with the weight of all these problems, to-do lists, pain, and flare-ups…somebody (or rather somebunny) loves me. And I’m certain that the same applies to y’all. Sometimes it may not feel that way or seem that way, but some one does. Love isn’t always enough but it lessens the blow of the worlds cruelty. Even when you’re on your last limb, everything is failing, the world is crumbling a round you; worst yet, a dumpster-fire, there IS someone. Someone who cares. And if you feel like there isn’t, chances are it’s because you counted yourself out. The love starts there. If you love you that “somebunny” will always exist. Everyone else is the icing on the cake; the Sazon in that arroz con gandules.

And that love has to be unconditional. You don’t always have to like yourself, no one is perfect, we all make mistakes, and you STILL have to love yourself through it all.

I’ve loved myself for as long as I can remember, no matter who tried to tear me down and make sure I hated myself….it just never stuck. And when I tell you I was smothered in reasons to hate myself through the world’s gaze….I do mean smothered.

My mother defended her melanated baby against racist Hispanic family members who all but called me the N-Word (often) and for sure used the word loosely when my mother and I were not around. I was singled out and called an ape by my 4th grade teacher, she would have me sit in the middle of a circle of my classmates and tell them to throw things at me (I was 9 and it was my first experience with racism at this level, and I didn’t fully understand the gravity or what she was doing). Any time someone from class spoke to me or tried to be friends with me she would tell them to stop talking to me because I was a trouble maker, that people like me always were, and that I didn’t deserve kindness. She would grab my arm hard and yank me around, tell me how worthless I was, scold me for nothing, use sentences that started with “You people”, and force me to sit in the back corner.

One day she ripped up a drawing of mine in front of the class and that was definitely something I could understand; it made me cry. I was deeply hurt by my art being destroyed. I finally, after several months of racially motivated torment, told my mom and cousin what my teacher did. Needless to say it did not go well. You see….my mom is crazy and my cousin is crazier. Then they told my father and He is just as cookoo for the cocoa puffs. And as cray as my family (as I reflect, it makes sense as to why I’m as hot headed as I am….it runs deep in my lineage), they managed to keep their cool long enough to call for a sit down with the teacher and principal. To make a long story short, my father sat as calm as can be with balled up fist (trying not to feed into the angry black man stereotype), while my mom gave this bitch ass racist teacher a piece of her mind. My cousin sat quietly as my teacher tried to explain herself with, get this, a fucking attitude as she tried her hardest not to let the racism slip out her mouth. My cousin did her best impersonation of a civilized person….but ended up not being able to hold her tongue for long. Next thing you know she’s lunging across the tables cursing and screaming up a storm. More happened that night but my mom never fully elaborated outside of what I just told y’all. I was transferred to another class and within a week, that racist sack of human trash was fired. Turns out all of the student corroborated my story and they felt bad and uncomfortable watching how this adult treat me on the daily. They felt helpless. And from then on it’s been a battle I could no longer ignore or be oblivious to. I now knew that I was different different.

I have a long list of stories enduring racist and prejudice (let me know if you wanna here them), but the self hate parade and brigade didn’t stop there. My mom, without intending to be a shitty parent, would always try and change my appearance and outwardly tell me how she wanted me to look; thinner, blonde, etc…

***TRIGGER WARNING***

My father abandoned his duties to me from the age of four, but every time he popped up or dropped a line, he spent his time criticizing my style, my race (because as far as I know he doesn’t care to much for Hispanics…much less Puerto Ricans), and the way I looked. He would vent about my mother and call her a dyke and truck driver, tear her down for what he deemed a lack of “femininity” and warned me to not turn into her. He would talk about my body every chance he got; told me that no one would ever be attracted to or love a fat woman. He often called Hispanic women sluts and Hispanic men were lazy….as though I’m not partially Hispanic myself. So according to my mother, I wasn’t skinny enough, my hair wasn’t blonde, and she didn’t like my style. According to my father, I was lazy and a slut due to me being part Hispanic (Puerto Rican specifically), I was too fat over all but more specifically I was too fat to be attractive to him and to anyone; I’d never find love because of it. Plus he felt like I should know my place and role as a woman.

By the time I was six I had been sexually assaulted, by the time I was thirteen….sexually assaulted some more. I was bullied all through junior high and had been betrayed by every “friend” I’d ever had. By the time I turned sixteen I’d been hit by my boyfriend; two more times after that and by then I was finally fighting back and almost killed him. All the while dealing with the typical growing pains and a side of continual racism everywhere I went; like I said there’s a long list. I also have a lil list of all the trauma and bullshit I’ve endure throughout my entire life. And now, now I’m disabled. There’s a lot to be angry for, a lot to be resentful about, a shit ton of reasons to internalize the hatred I’ve come toe to toe with my entire life. But through it all my love for myself never faltered, not once.

Sure there were things I didn’t like sometimes, sure I was insecure a time or two (I don’t think I’d be human if I hadn’t been, and sometimes still am), but my love for self always stayed true. I don’t know if it’s because I just knew I was amazing, or if early on I felt the disappointment and lack of protection from those who were supposed to protect, love, and respect me, that I ended up being my own best friend, my own cheerleader, my own support system from jump. Maybe it’s all of the above. But because of it I was able to see first hand why it was and IS so God damn important to start with you. Because no matter what, that’s the one you should be able to rely the most, and it is completely in your control.

So that’s what I’ve done. I’ve loved myself with reckless abandon; unconditionally, feverishly, and unapologetically. Yes somebody can love you, and that’s FUCKING AWESOME, but nothing compares to the love of self, and that special intimate bond you foster through out your time on this dumpster-fire planet… with these garbage humans. Don’t get me wrong, there are incredible people roaming this existence just waiting to be welcomed additions to your family, but never forget, it’s you and your relationship with you that comes first and trumps it all. And before anyone misinterprets what I’m saying, by no means am I talking about being an asshole or selfish, these are different concepts altogether.

In any event, like my outfit? Cool, me too. I just had to bring in some Spring vibes into this fall, cuz I doooozzzz that sometimes. The dress is long-sleeved (so you can keep toasty in these increasingly crisp’ning weather. The jacket isn’t exactly lightweight even though it has a decent amount of distressing. The sneakers take the quintessential white-sneak up a notch with it’s ever so amazing flat-top studs. And, lastly the pink beret that kindly reminds us all that “somebunny” loves you, while cheekily and simultaneously reminds us that on the flip side “somebunny‘‘ hates you too (didn’t get the chance to show the back of the beret where it says exactly that. A reminder that there’s always a second side of the coin….and that the in-between spaces of that coin is the grey area we all often reside in.

Hold strong my loves, somebody loves you, start with you, but if you’re still learning, that’s ok; I have some spare love to share. You can have some as a placeholder as you’re on your journey.
