The truth about skin care products and their expiry date | Skin Secrets

by Lina Clémence June 14, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

With the rise of skinfluencers and live selling, it’s no surprise that we find ourselves purchasing multiple products in search of that one product that truly works. But when products start piling up on our shelves, this question pops up in our mind: are these expired?

Using expired skin care products can do our skin more harm than good, possibly even undoing any progress your skin had previously.

Read on as we share all you need to know about skin care and their expiry dates!

Do skin care products have expiry dates?

Just like food and medicine, skin care products have expiration dates as well. Using them on your skin past their prime can be ineffective, and even harmful to your skin. Over time, the active ingredients in skin care products tend to break down, reducing their potency and efficacy.

Factors that affect skin care’s shelf life

Not all skin care products expire at the same rate. Several factors determine how long a product stays fresh and effective:

  • Exposure to light & air: Sunlight and oxygen can degrade active ingredients, making the product less effective.
  • Storage conditions: Keeping skin care in warm, humid environments (like your bathroom) can shorten its lifespan.
  • Packaging: Products in airtight pump bottles or opaque containers tend to last longer than those in jars, which are exposed to air and bacteria every time they’re opened.

If you notice changes in the product’s texture, colour or smell, even if it’s still within its expiration date, it might be time to toss it. Products that have separated into layers or developed clumps should be discarded.

What happens if you use expired products?

Using expired skin care products can cause more harm than good for your skin. As the active ingredients break down over time, the formula loses its effectiveness. This reduces its ability to provide sufficient effects and results for your skin.

Expired products could also lead to irritation, redness or breakouts as preservatives lose their potency, which potentially increases the risk of bacterial or fungal growth.

skin irritation

To keep your skin healthy and make sure you’re getting the most out of your skin care routine, it is crucial to check expiration dates regularly and replace any products that are past their prime.

How to check for expiration dates?

Before using any skin care product, do a quick check on its expiry date. Most products will have:

  • A printed expiration date: This tells you when the product will expire, even if unopened.
  • A PAO (Period After Opening) symbol: Look for a small jar icon with a number, like 12M (12 months), indicating how long the product is good for after opening.

3 proper ways to store your skin care

Taking care of your skin also means taking care of your skin care products! Proper storage helps maintain their effectiveness and ensures you get the most out of every drop. Here are some ways to store your skin care properly:

  1. Keep them in a cool, dark place: Avoid direct sunlight and humid environments to preserve their stability.
  1. Consider buying smaller quantities: This minimises waste and ensures you’re always using fresh, potent formulas.
  1. Label your products: Add a small sticker with the date you opened them to keep track of their shelf life.

At the end of the day, skin care is an investment in yourself. So treat your products with care and caution, and they’ll take care of your skin in return!

💖First-Time Waxing FAQ – Everything you need to know before your first Brazilian wax at SkinPH.

by Lina Clémence June 13, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

I’ve never been waxed before — what should I expect?

Totally normal to feel a little nervous. At SkinPH, we specialize in making first timers feel safe, comfortable, and cared for. Your esthetician will walk you through every step and make the process quick and efficient. Most clients say they’re surprised how easy it is — and how smooth they feel afterward!

Why Choose Waxing?

Waxing isn’t just a one-time thing — it’s a game-changer for your skin.

Here’s what makes it worth it:

Longer-Lasting Smoothness: Waxing removes hair from the root, so you stay smoother for weeks — no daily shaving.

  • Less Irritation Over Time: Say goodbye to razor burn, bumps, and ingrowns.
  • Finer Regrowth: With consistent waxing, hair grows back softer, finer, and less frequently.
  • Exfoliating Bonus: Waxing also removes dead skin cells, leaving your skin smoother and more radiant.
  • Confidence Boost: There’s nothing like that post-wax glow — especially when it’s done by someone who truly cares.

At SkinPH, we’re not just removing hair — we’re helping you feel confident in your own skin, every single visit.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Here’s how to get wax-ready:

  • Let it grow: Hair should be at least ¼ inch long — about the size of a grain of rice. That usually means no shaving for 2–3 weeks.
  • Exfoliate (gently): Light exfoliation 24–48 hours before your wax helps remove dead skin and prevent ingrowns.
  • Skip lotions & oils: Clean, dry skin helps the wax grip better. Avoid moisturizers the day of your wax.
  • Avoid caffeine & alcohol: These can make your skin more sensitive — best to skip them a few hours before.

Worried about pain? You can take an over-the-counter pain reliever (like ibuprofen) 30 minutes before your appointment.

Does waxing hurt?

Everyone’s pain tolerance is different. The first wax is typically the most sensitive since the hair is coarser, but it absolutely gets easier with time. Our technique is designed to reduce discomfort, and we use hard film wax that’s gentle on sensitive skin.

Can I get waxed during my period?

Yes, you can. Just keep in mind that your skin may feel a little more sensitive. If you’re booking a bikini or Brazilian wax, please wear a fresh tampon or menstrual cup.

What should I avoid after my wax?

To keep your skin happy:

  • No tight clothes or touching: Let the area breathe to avoid irritation.
  • Avoid heat: Skip tanning, hot tubs, saunas, or intense workouts for 24–48 hours.
  • Hold off on exfoliating: Wait 2–3 days, then exfoliate 2–3 times a week to prevent ingrown hairs.
  • Hydrate: Use a fragrance-free moisturizer to soothe and soften the skin.

No shaving between waxes: Stick to waxing every 4–6 weeks for best results.

What if I get bumps or redness?

Totally normal! Minor irritation can happen after your first wax. It usually fades within a few hours. You can apply a cold compress or aloe gel for relief.

Bonus Tips from SkinPH:

  • Wear loose, breathable clothing to your appointment
  • Schedule around your cycle if you’re more sensitive before your period
  • Don’t stress — we specialize in first-time clients!

Your Comfort is Our Priority

At SkinPH, we combine expertise, kindness, and technique to make waxing a positive experience. If you have any questions before your appointment, we’re just a message away.

11 Important Facts About Hooded Eye Botox

by Lina Clémence June 12, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Hooded-eye Botox has become a go-to solution for individuals seeking to address drooping eyelids or a hooded eye appearance. This minimally invasive treatment provides a way to achieve a more youthful and refreshed appearance without undergoing surgery. However, before scheduling your appointment, there are several key details you need to understand. From how the treatment works to its benefits and limitations, here are 11 important facts about hooded eye Botox to guide you.

Fact 1: Botox Targets Specific Muscles

Botox works by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for causing the hooded appearance of the eyes. Specifically, small, precise amounts of Botox are injected into targeted areas around the eyes, particularly the muscles that pull the eyelids downward. By relaxing these muscles, Botox lifts and smooths the eyelids, giving the eyes a more open, refreshed, and youthful look. This makes it an effective, minimally invasive option for addressing mild to moderate hooding.

Fact 2: It Is a Non-Surgical Option

One of the biggest advantages of hooded eye Botox is that it’s a non-surgical treatment. Unlike blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), which involves incisions, sutures, and a significant recovery period, Botox does not involve any cutting or invasive procedures. The treatment is quick, relatively painless, and requires almost no downtime, making it an appealing choice for people who want to improve their appearance without the risks or lengthy recovery associated with surgery.

Fact 3: Results Are Temporary

While Botox for hooded eyes can deliver noticeable and effective results, they are not permanent. The effects typically last anywhere from three to four months, depending on factors such as your metabolism, lifestyle, and the rate at which your body breaks down the Botox. For some individuals, the results may last slightly longer or shorter. Schedule periodic treatments with your provider to maintain the benefits of lifted and youthful-looking eyelids. Over time, consistent treatments can help you achieve a more long-term improvement in your appearance.

Fact 4: It Is a Precision-Based Treatment

The success of hooded eye Botox relies heavily on precision and expertise. Unlike other cosmetic treatments, Botox injections must be administered with accuracy to target the specific muscles causing the hooded effect. A trained and experienced professional will know the exact placement and dosage required to produce balanced, natural-looking results. However, errors in technique or placement can lead to complications, such as droopy eyelids, uneven effects, or other unwanted outcomes. This is why choosing a qualified provider is essential.

Fact 5: A Consultation Is Essential

Before undergoing Botox for hooded eyes, a thorough consultation with a qualified provider is a crucial first step. During this meeting, the practitioner will assess the severity of your hooded eyelids, evaluate the structure of your face, and discuss your aesthetic goals. This is also the time to ask any questions or share concerns you may have. The provider will ensure that Botox is the right option for you and customize the treatment plan based on your unique needs. This personalized approach enables the achievement of the best possible results.

Fact 6: Not Everyone Is a Candidate

Hooded eye Botox isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. While the treatment is a great option for mild to moderate hooding, it may not be suitable for individuals with severe hooding or significant excess skin in the eyelid area. In these cases, surgical intervention, such as blepharoplasty, might be recommended to achieve the desired outcome. Additionally, Botox may not be suitable for people with certain medical conditions, allergies, or sensitivities. A consultation with an experienced provider will help determine whether this treatment is a good fit for you.

Fact 7: There Is Minimal Downtime

One of the reasons hooded eye Botox is so popular is that it requires minimal downtime. Most people can return to their normal daily activities almost immediately after the procedure, making it a convenient option for those with busy schedules. While you might experience some mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection sites, these side effects typically resolve within a few days. Overall, the lack of significant downtime means you can enjoy the results of your treatment without much disruption to your routine.

Fact 8: Results Develop Over Time

Unlike surgical procedures, which yield immediate results but require a significant recovery period, Botox results develop gradually. After your appointment, you may start to notice subtle changes within a few days. However, full results typically take 10 to 14 days to become visible. This gradual effect allows the transformation to appear natural, as if your refreshed look happened effortlessly. Plan your treatment accordingly if you have a special event or occasion approaching.

Fact 9: The Procedure Is Quick and Relatively Painless

Getting Botox for hooded eyes is a straightforward and quick procedure. The entire process typically takes less than 20 minutes, making it easy to fit into a busy day. Most patients report little to no discomfort during the injections, as the needles used are very fine. For those with concerns about pain, local numbing creams or ice packs can be used to ensure the treatment is as comfortable as possible. Once the procedure is complete, you can return to your day with minimal disruption.

Fact 10: Maintenance Is Needed for Long-Term Effects

If you love the way Botox enhances your eyelids and gives you a more youthful appearance, you’ll need to commit to regular maintenance treatments. Since the effects of Botox are temporary, scheduling follow-up appointments every three to four months will help you maintain consistent results. Over time, regular treatments can also help train the targeted muscles, potentially leading to longer-lasting effects. This commitment ensures you can enjoy the benefits of lifted, refreshed eyelids without interruption.

Fact 11: It’s More Affordable Than Surgery

While the costs of Botox treatments can vary depending on your provider and location, it’s generally much more affordable than eyelid surgery. For individuals seeking a more youthful and open-eyed appearance without the financial burden of surgery, Botox provides an accessible alternative. Additionally, the lack of recovery time associated with Botox means fewer disruptions to your daily life, adding to its overall cost-effectiveness as a cosmetic solution.

Enhance Your Look with Hooded Eye Botox

Hooded eye Botox is a fantastic way to address drooping eyelids and achieve a more open, youthful eye area. With its precision-based results, minimal downtime, and affordability, it’s no wonder so many people are turning to this treatment.

If you’re inspired by these 11 important facts about hooded eye Botox, our team is ready to assist you. Schedule a consultation for Botox in Santa Monica, CA, today and take the first step toward enhancing your natural beauty.

Boxwalla Beauty Box Feb 2021 Review – Seoulfull Star

by Lina Clémence June 11, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Rejoice green beauty aficionados because Boxwalla has extended the deadline for their February box* featuring fabulous British Indie brand Nini Organics …perfect moment for me to officially share my thoughts and perhaps sway you to succumbing if you’ve been remotely tempted… You have until the 22nd February 2021 to subscribe.

Although skincare and experiencing products lovingly crafted by passionate brand founders always brings me joy and knowing that a box of delights curated by Boxwalla is making its way to me will always thrill me, I was especially excited to receive the February 2021 box. January is a always a difficult month, dreary and bleak and to receive these gorgeous, vibrant, antioxidant rich products from Nini Organics felt somewhat akin to colour therapy. I’m well versed with Nini Organics and after an introduction to this lovely British (yay!) brand last year by way of their Natura Detox Foam cleanser, I was ecstatic that an entire box dedicated to this joy-inducing brand was on the horizon. Over my years of using green, indie brands, I have come to truly believe that brand creators somehow infuse their aura, their essence  (no pun intended) in all their magical concoctions. Products end up mimicking their makers and everything from the Nini Organics line is bright, characteristically colourful, effervescent, festive and highly effective- just like founder Alex. If you don’t follow them, I highly recommend for a dose of Alex every morning. His infectious enthusiasm will leave you truly happy. It just so happened that the 2 products, Crimson Beauty and Rain Hydrating Essence were high on my wishlist (doesn’t even surprise me, I am convinced Lavanya, the founder of Boxwalla is a psychic and knows exactly what my heart desires…)

Let’s start with what I consider the star of this box- Crimson Beauty. Firstly, you get 50ml of this gleaming red beauty, a generous size (for which I’m grateful as I don’t EVER want to run out!).  This is hydration galore. Hello, juicy, plump skin! And the scent…I think I’ve died and gone to heaven. It’s a real pleasure to use this every morning, with its delicately floral rose+neroli aroma, punctuated by comforting vanilla and cacao hmmm. Crimson beauty contains a hibiscus macerate (hibiscus is a flower I’m so drawn to as I love those bold, bright conspicuous petals that you find in all gardens in Mauritius, where I grew up), rose otto and neroli hydrosol bolstered by cucumber, glycerine and Quora Noni (which protects skin’s microbiome) to make a fabulously cocooning formulation. My favourite way to use it is in conjunction with an oil creating what is called a micro emulsion (which just happens to be my favourite word at the moment. Give me all the microemulsions, my skin cannot handle dense balms at the moment). Crimson Beauty is all I want a hyrdrating serum to be and it’s a resounding yes from me.

Next comes Rain. The colour of royalty, this cucumber scented mist has been a wonderful addition to my routines. I do love it post cleansing but mostly rely on it during the day, to infuse my skin with a burst of much needed moisture.  Rain contains just a kiss of glow inducing lactic acid so it’s not overly and cloyingly hydrating but actually balancing- the perfect midday mist basically. Whilst my preference always lies with finer mists normally, Rain comes gushing out but not aggressively though, but in the most pleasantly therapeutic manner, as if you’ve been caught in a lush drizzle of cucumber extract, neroli water, butterfly pea flower extract and milk thistle. It’s not a mere mist, the ingredient roster does really read like a wonderful serum and the fact that I’m misting myself with reckless abandon and whizzing through it at the speed of lightening speaks volumes.

I’m so pleased Lavanya chose to include this adorable miniature sample of Halo Cleansing Elixir for everyone to experience its glory. This is the first product I fell in love with from the Nini Organics line some years ago and I couldn’t help gushing about it, I’m surprise it hasn’t becoming a cult favourite yet.  For all lovers of blue tansy, this is a must try, in its passionfruit oil and jojoba oil base. I especially enjoy it as directed by Alex, massaged onto skin and removed with a cold washcloth, which is why I am saving it for warmer months to come. The high content of azulene really helps calm down any inflammation and I’m impatiently waiting for it’s return in my warm weather routines.

Once again, a perfectly selected box to start 2021 from Boxwalla. Get your hands on one while you can and if you’re a lover of luxury, plant-powered skincare, do consider subscribing to Boxwalla, it’s basically skincare nirvana.

An Esthetician’s Guide to Achieving Glass Skin

by Lina Clémence June 10, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

When it comes to the “glass skin” trend, online experts are pushing intensive hydration to give a plump, dewy look but I’m here to tell, you can’t hydrate your way to achieving glass skin. As a 35 year expert esthetician, I’ll share with you how to truly get skin that is smooth-as-glass that you will absolutely love.

What Exactly is “Glass Skin”?

Glass skin is a term that refers to skin that is incredibly smooth, clear, and radiant and reflects light – almost resembling a piece of glass. It is defined as skin that is deeply hydrated, plump, and glowing with a pore-less and flawless finish. Sounds incredible, right? Let’s touch on all things glass skin.

The 4 Essentials for Achieving Glass Skin

    1. Smooth-as-glass texture (free of bumps and blemishes with minimized pores)
    2. Even-toned with minimal discoloration
    3. Glowing / Circulation (a naturally healthy glow from within)
    4. Moisture / Hydration (dewy, plump skin)

Let’s Touch on Texture

Clogged Pores

Clogged pores (known as “closed comedones”) appear as white-ish bumps on the skin. When you think of glass skin, the first thing that comes to mind is a smooth texture not bumpy. Clogged pores are not as round or firm as milia (mentioned below), but when left untreated, they tend to hang around for long periods of time.

Causes of clogged pores:
Oily skin, wrong products for your skin type, pore-clogging makeup (I’m looking at you, cream blushes and highlighters!), heavy sunscreens

Renée’s expert advice:
Receive manual extractions from an esthetician. This blockage in your pores WON’T go away on their own. Once you get them cleared out, the goal is to keep them clear with the following leave-on acid exfoliators.

Product recommendations:

BHA Clarifying Serum

Pore + Wrinkle Perfecting Serum

Milia

Milia are hard, tiny bumps on the skin that appear when keratin and hardened oil get trapped below the skin’s surface. Milia are round and, because of how they look, are sometimes described as tiny “pearls.” The hardened oil gives them an off-white color, and they appear most commonly around the eyes, nose, and cheeks.

Causes of milia:
Hyperkeratosis, heavy eye creams, smoking

Renée’s expert advice:
Receive manual extractions from an esthetician. Just like closed comedones, these don’t magically disappear. Find an esthetician who is skill in extractions for removal. Dermatologists can remove milia, too.

Product recommendations:
Overnight Eye Serum

skin with clogged pores and skin with milia

Let’s Touch on Blemishes and Enlarged Pores

Blemishes

Blemishes can be in the form of whiteheads, pustules, or cysts. Acne can be very complicated but there are ways to prevent blemishes from forming and knowing what to do once they appear so you can achieve glass skin.

Causes of blemishes:
Hormones, incorrect products, dairy, many unknowns, a case of bad luck.

Renée’s expert advice:
See an experienced skincare professional who can help guide you to an action plan to give you results.

Product recommendations:

Anti Bump Solution

Rapid Response Detox Masque

AHA/BHA Blemish Control Cleanser

Rapid Response Detox Cleanser

Enlarged Pores

Enlarged pores are pores that have been physically stretched out by excess oil production or the loss of collagen. You most certainly can shrink these back to their original size. Otherwise, if your pores aren’t enlarged, their size is genetically determined, which means it’s impossible to make them any smaller than they’re meant to be. In this case, you can only minimize their appearance—not their actual size.

Causes of enlarged pores:
Excess oil production, hormones, age

Renée’s expert advice:
Regular use of physical and chemical exfoliants and retinol/retinoids

Product recommendations:

Pore + Wrinkle Perfecting Serum

Pro Results Power Serum

Triple Berry Smoothing Scrub

Advanced Resurfacing Serum

skin with blemishes and skin with enlarged pores

Let’s Touch on Skin Growths

Skin Growths

Skin growths are bumps on the face, neck, and body. They are usually benign (non-cancerous) and often begin as small flat or rough bumps. That said, it’s very important to keep an eye out for anything new or changing. Always schedule regular skin checks with your dermatologist. When in doubt, always get it checked out.

At first, these growths might be mistaken for clogged pores or breakouts, but they will never come to a head and cannot be extracted since there is no oil in them. Treating them with harsh, breakout-focused products will only result in dry, irritated skin.

Causes of skin growths:
UV damage, age, genetics, hormones, oily skin

Renée’s expert advice:
See a dermatologist for a skin check and removal (Some estheticians have devices to help with removal, too.)

Product recommendations:
Advanced Resurfacing Serum (retinol), prescription retinoid

skin with skin growths

Let’s Touch on Discoloration

Discoloration

Discoloration is an overproduction of a pigment called melanin. Genetics, sun exposure, hormones and injury to the skin are the most common causes. Once the melanin factory turns on, it can be hard to calm fussy pigment cells back down. This is why it’s so frustrating because they can take months to go away – especially the deeper your skin tone is.

Causes of discoloration:
Sun exposure, heat, blemishes, pregnancy, aging, genetics

Renée’s expert advice:
Products that fade/brighten, physical and chemical exfoliation, use SPF (during all daylight hours every single day of the year!), add an extra layer of protection with foundation makeup

Product recommendations:

HyperFix Fading Toner

Vitamin C + E Treatment

Triple Berry Smoothing Peel

Triple Berry Smoothing Scrub

Weightless Protection SPF 30

skin with different types of pigmentation

Let’s Touch on Circulation

Under-Circulation

How to tell if the skin is under-circulated:

When your skin is makeup-free, take your thumb and forefinger and gently pull on the apples of your cheeks. Using light pressure, quickly pinch the skin five times.

If your skin becomes a little pink, it’s likely that it has proper circulation.

If your skin doesn’t become pink, it’s more than likely under-circulated, and you’ll want to boost circulation. If your skin becomes red, your skin is likely over-circulated, and you’ll want to keep it calm with soothing (not energizing) products.

Basically, to get the glowing skin you want, the goal is for your circulation to be right in the middle—not too much, not too little.

Causes of under-circulated skin:
Slow blood circulation, genetics, smoking, drug use

Renée’s expert advice:
Hang your head upside down, facial massage, exercise, use stimulating ingredients, restoring the skin barrier

Product recommendations:

Mint Renewal Cleanser

Energy Boosting Toner

Triple Berry Smoothing Peel

Let’s Touch on Moisture, Hydration and Light-Reflection

Moisture Loss

Causes of moisture loss in the skin:
Dryness (lack of oil), dehydration (lack of water), build up of dead skin, weather, topical prescriptions

Renée’s expert advice:
The “Golden Minute Rule”, gentle cleansers, water infusion sealed with barrier repairing masque, creme or lotion

Product recommendations:

Moisture Infusion Toner

Skin Recovery Balm

Skin Recovery Lotion

Skin Drink Concentrate

Hydraboost Rescue Creme

Rest Day Masque

Let’s Touch on Your Glass Skin Action Plan

      • Take the Skin Type Quiz
      • Use products for your skin type
      • Get glowing #thereneeway

While “glass skin” is a trendy word and may go away, the goal of getting the skin to look smooth-as-glass will always be a desired look. I hope you enjoyed this post!

What we need to know

by Lina Clémence June 9, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

The numbers don’t lie

A few weeks ago while researching for another project, I came across a graph that stopped me in my tracks. As someone who reviews data regularly, I’m not easily shocked by statistics—but this one was different. The data was so striking that I initially doubted its accuracy. After verifying the source, I had to accept the concerning reality it revealed:

Men are dangerously behind women when it comes to sun protection.

Wow. In most age groups men use sunscreen less than half as often as women… That’s so concerning that I decided to do more research. This is what I found:

According to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), men are significantly more likely to develop skin cancer than women. Here are some key findings:

  • In 2021, the rate of new melanoma cases was 28.6 per 100,000 for men, compared to 18.9 per 100,000 for women.

  • The death rate from melanoma in 2021 was over twice as high for men (2.9 per 100,000) as for women (1.3 per 100,000).

Why the gender difference?

Could these higher rates simply be due to less sunscreen use, or is there more to the story? My research revealed that men are actually more vulnerable to skin cancer – even when they do use SPF – for several surprising reasons:

1. Exposure at work: Men are more likely to work in outdoor occupations such as construction, agriculture, and landscaping.

2. Exposure at play: Men engage more than women in high sun exposure activities such as fishing and golf during peak UV hours.

3. Hormonal differences: Believe it or not, hormones play a role in skin cancer risk:

  • Studies show that estrogen, predominantly found in women, may help protect skin from UV damage.

  • Research points out that androgens (male hormones) might make skin more vulnerable to sun damage.

These differences could explain why men are not only more likely to develop skin cancer but also tend to have worse outcomes.

4. Thicker Skin: A study in the journal “Dermatology” found that men’s skin is about 25% thicker than women’s skin, which could contribute to delayed detection of skin abnormalities[4]. Ironically, in this case, men’s naturally thicker skin might work against them. While thicker skin can provide some protection against wrinkles, it may mask early signs of sun damage, making it harder to detect potential skin cancers in their early stages.

5. Vulnerable areas: the neck, ears, and balding head

Three areas of particular concern for men are the neck, ears, and balding head. These areas are often exposed to the sun year-round, even in cooler climates.

6. Men are simply not as informed as women about the risk

A survey conducted by the American Academy of Dermatology in 2016 found that fewer men than women knew the following facts:

The Paradox:

Men actually have a greater need for sun protection than women do, yet they’re far less likely to use it consistently.

My tips on helping to keep the men in your life healthy.

1. Encourage regular skin checks

Remind the men in your life to perform monthly self-exams and schedule annual dermatologist visits. Early detection saves lives.

2. Make sun protection accessible and appealing

Gift high-quality sunscreens, stylish hats, and UV-protective clothing to the men you care about. Remove barriers to protection by making it convenient.

3. Lead by example

Make sun protection a family affair by applying sunscreen together before outdoor activities. Normalize the habit through consistent modeling.

4. Help choose the right SPF

When selecting sunscreen for men, consider their unique preferences:

  • Non-greasy, quick-absorbing formulas that don’t leave a white cast

  • ‘Sport’ or ‘active’ sunscreens that are water and sweat-resistant

  • For balding heads, consider sunscreen sticks or clear zinc oxide formulas

  • Emphasize reapplication, especially on the tops of heads

  • Encourage hat-wearing as an additional protective measure

Remember, the best sunscreen is the one that the men in your life will use consistently.

5.DNA repair enzymes – every day

I recommend products with DNA repair enzymes for the men in your life. These complex proteins help repair UV-induced DNA damage in skin cells, reducing skin cancer risk by correcting cellular damage before it leads to cancerous changes. All the men in my family use my favorite DNA repair products as part of their daily routine.

CurrentBody Skin LED Lip Perfector Review

Review of the first targeted anti aging LED device for Lips- the CurrentBody Skin LED Lip Perfector

I was kindly sent one of Currentbody’s newest devices to try out- their Lip LED device for anti-aging. I have already been very impressed with my results from from their face LED device, so this is going to be an interesting trial. It’s certainly an unusual device, I don’t think I’ve come across specific lip device before. Plenty of people struggle with aging around the mouth area particularly, it’s a very mobile part of the face and quickly shows signs of aging. I have an amazing discount code for my readers, just head to Currentbody.com type in NIA15 for 15% off at checkout.

We did an episode on whether LED devices are any good on my podcast, Skincare with Friends. We discovered that LED can be effective against the signs of aging but it has to have to have specific qualities. Let’s see if the Currentbody Lip LED has the chops.

(The device was given to me free of charge to try out and review, the links are affiliate which means I get a small percentage if you click and spend, which will go back into my blog.)

What Currentbody has to say about the LED Lip Perfector

Now there is a natural alternative to invasive, painful lip fillers. Specially designed to address the delicate lip area, the LED Lip Perfector is the ultimate in lip plumping and rejuvenation.

This innovative device works with your body’s natural processes to stimulate the production of collagen, creating long lasting fuller lips and visibly reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

Using professionally technology found in clinics and salons around the world and, unlike other lip technology and lip skincare plumping treatments, this device treats the very deepest layers of the skin without pain or irritation delivering the perfect pout in just 3 minutes a day.

CurrentBody Skin LED Lip Perfector- The Science

It seems too good to be true doesn’t? that something as simple as a light could reverse aging. But there is actually good science behind it and a reasonable explanation as to how it works. I’m summarising here but this is basically how the scientists think it works.

LED treatments are also known as Low Level Laser Therapy or photobiomodulation and it has numerous applications. LED devices are used for all sorts of application in the medical field- for hair loss, wound healing, seasonal effective disorder, NASA uses LED therapy to help heal inflammation and muscle damage.

While the skin is frequently exposed to light, LED therapy is different to normal visible light in that it has a very narrow electromagnetic wavelength and higher energy than normal light. The therapeutic LEDs emit photons which have a cellular effect. The photons cause a release of reactive oxygen species and ATP which in turn stimulate messenger chemicals which tell the cell to regenerate and produce collagen (Yeh et al, 2010).

CurrentBody Skin LED Lip Perfector- The Science- Avci et al, 2013

There have been several studies which show that LED treatments with red light and infrared light (the same wavelengths that the Currentbody Lip LED device uses!) have the following effects-

  • Increases collagen levels in the skin
  • Improves skin smoothness
  • Speeds up healing time
  • Reduces redness
  • Helps treat acne
  • Improves blood flow
  • Protection from UV sun damage
  • Reduces wrinkles (Avci et al, 2013).

According to Avci et al, 2013, the treatments provided in the studies used machines that have energy of 0.04–50 J/cm2 and power densities of < 100 mW/cm2. Wavelengths in the range of 390 nm to 600 nm are used to treat the top most layers of skin, and longer wavelengths in the range of 600nm to 1,100nm, which penetrate more, are used to treat deeper layers. The CurrentBody Skin LED Lip Perfector has good energy levels and a range of wavelengths that can help with the effects of aging as well as improving healing and skin quality.

Also of note, any age skin can benefit from light treatment, not just the over 40s. Trelles (2006), recommended LED phototherapy for those in their 20s as a way to prevent aging.

The CurrentBody Skin LED Lip Perfector comes with a base which connects magnetically to the device. It has a plastic cover, a replacement mouth piece and handy carry bag. It’s rechargeable and the charge lasts for ages. The packaging is nice and feels like good quality.

The device is shaped like a dummy (aka pacifier) and you hold it in your mouth. You press the button and the lights come on. It will turn itself off once the three minute treatment time is over. I do find my jaw aches a bit holding the device between my teeth, but it’s only three minutes, so that’s not so bad. It would probably be better if I lay down for the treatment and let gravity give me a hand but I’m not great at sitting still. The treatment is painless and just feels a little warm.

I’ve used the device for several weeks, missing the odd day when I’ve been too busy. I think I’ve noticed some difference in the quality of the skin around my mouth. Maybe less lined and smoother. I wouldn’t say my lips are plumper, that could be something that happens over a longer period of time perhaps? Here are my before and after pictures and some that the brand took also-

I think that the CurrentBody Skin LED Lip Perfector would be a great device for someone with particular issues around the mouth area. It would be great for smoker’s lines, smile lines or marionettes. Rejuvenating the mouth/lip area is particularly difficult- it’s a sensitive area for retinoids, you can’t really use botox in the same way you can elsewhere for fear of affecting the smile. The CurrentBody Skin LED Lip Perfector is a great targeted solution to perioral aging.

My Lip Flip Before and After: A Review From Injector

by Lina Clémence June 7, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Have you ever come across the term “lip flip”? It’s a procedure designed for anyone seeking a subtle boost in their lip size. Rather than opting for fillers that add bulk, the lip flip aims to give the illusion of fuller lips.

So, how does it work? A healthcare practitioner administers tiny injections (yes, those famous ones begin with “B” and end with “X”) that relax the muscles around the upper lip. This technique gently flips the upper lip outward, offering a naturally plumper look without adding any actual volume.

As an aesthetic injector who is always up for exploring, I thought, “Why not test it on myself?” So, that’s exactly what I did, and here’s a brief look at my experience, the transformative lip flip before and after, and my reflections on the process.

A Little About my Lips

Chasing after the so-called “ideal” lips has never really been my thing. What’s considered “ideal” seems to change faster than the seasons anyway. Right now, everyone’s all about that full-lip look, but who’s to say the preference for thin, elegant lips won’t make a swift return?

Here’s the deal with my lips: they’re completely natural, as you’ll spot in the “Before” picture (see below), showcasing their genuine lines and form. The lower lip? It’s got a bit of plumpness to it. But the upper lip presents its own little twist—an asymmetry with a noticeable “gull wing” silhouette. This essentially means the cupid’s bow is quite pronounced, creating a visual reminiscent of, well, gull wings.

To me, there’s something special about their distinct shape. However, the chance to explore the world of cosmetic enhancements, especially with something as non-permanent as the procedure known by “B” and ending with “X”, really caught my attention. So, off I went, embarking on a quest to find an expert injector and take the plunge myself.
