Five lessons blogging taught me about skincare

by Lina Clémence July 22, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

I have been writing this blog consistently for well over five years now, in that time I have tried hundreds if not thousands of products and whilst I would never consider myself an expert I have definitely learnt some lessons about skincare in that time. I am expecting next year to be a year where I learn a lot more, but I thought it would be interesting to reflect on some of the key things I have learnt so far.

Consistency is key – How many times have you looked in the mirror and wondered why that expensive cream isn’t working for you despite the fact that it has mostly been sat in the cupboard and not on your face? I suspect this has happened to most of us more times that we care to admit.

No product will work miracles on the skin, especially if you are not using it consistently. Short on time? Don’t really enjoy spending a lot of time on your skin? You are better off using a tightly edited set of products consistently, rather than getting out every product you own just once a week.

Skincare is not something that should be saved for special occasions either, if a product is too expensive for you to justify using on a regular basis, find a less expensive alternative, I guarantee that for most products out there you will find something you like just as much.

On that same point I have seen plenty of skincare experts berating people for choosing their skincare based on scent or how pleasurable they find it to use. Whilst I generally agree you shouldn’t something just because it smells good, I also think that if choosing something you enjoy helps you be more consistent in your routine that can only be a good thing.

How you apply products is important – Although this one seems incredibly obvious, I often think we loose sight of proper skincare application. I often get emails or messages asking for help with a specific product, it can be frustrating not being able to get something to work for you, but sometimes a simple change to how you apply can make all the difference.

Most skincare experts agree that you should apply textures from lightest to heaviest. So my routine would look this this (I don’t always follow all of these steps, instead I pick and choose the steps I think my skin needs): Exfoliating toners, Spritz (hydrating toner), Hydrating essence (thicker toner), water based serum, milky serums, oil based serum, cream and finally balm. I have seen contradicting opinions on using oil before or after creams, personally I dislike using them afterwards so I will generally mix a few drops of oil in to my cream to apply or if I am using an oil as a night treatment skip cream completely.

Sun protection would generally be the last step in your routine, but it is worth checking the instructions on the bottle as some chemical sun creams are formulated to sit next to the skin and you apply your skin care on top. If your using mineral sunscreens such as zinc or titanium dioxide then they generally need to be applied last and you can then put make up over the top.

Expensive isn’t always better – I know a lot of people might disagree with me on this, but in my humble opinion not every product with a luxury price tag is worth the money. Good ingredients do cost more generally, especially when they are organically grown, but there are an increasing amount of formulations on the market that although lovely, simply don’t live up to the results expected for that price point.

I personally like to mix and match high end, mid range and budget options, but I think there are lots of great products that routinely get overlooked because of their lower price point. I certainly don’t think anyone should spend more than they feel comfortable with, even if high end skincare is incredibly popular at the moment.

The natural vs synthetic debate (Natural isn’t always better) – Another point which I know many will disagree with, but I find the constant natural vs synthetic debate slightly frustrating to say the least. I want to be clear from the start of this point that love natural products, I have after all, dedicated years of my life to writing about them. I also think there is good reason to be wary of some synthetic ingredients. I can’t use heavy synthetic fragrance without getting a migraine for example, but the natural vs synthetic debate is much more complicated and nuanced than many people on both sides of the argument would have you believe.

One of the reasons I don’t have a list of ingredients to avoid on this site, is that I see far too many bloggers/brands blindly telling their audience X or Y is bad for them with no genuine knowledge or context. So for example, if I used a face wash with Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), my sensitive, dehydrated skin would scream at me for days, but when it comes to washing my dishes it works a treat, I just make sure to wear gloves.

The same applies to common allergens such as preservatives, I often see people pointing out that MI (methylisothiazolinone) is a commonly problematic ingredient for many (which it is), but I rarely see the same people pointing out that Peru balsam (a natural ingredient derived from a tree in South America) also is well known for its ability to produce allergic reactions. When it comes to ingredients, context is everything and not all natural ingredients will suit everyone, no matter how much we would like that to be the case.

You don’t need to jump on every trend – I love reading about the latest trends in ingredients or formulations, it is fun and informative, but something I have always been wary of when it comes to this blog and my own personal routine is jumping on every new trend that emerges.

Trends are by their very nature designed to come and go, I personally like to make long lasting and positive changes. The way I achieve that is by reading up on new ingredients and research and applying those things that interest me or resonate with my personal circumstances. It is very easy to buy in to hype, but if we are truly honest the beauty industry has to keep reinventing to wheel to market us products that in many cases we don’t need.

What skincare lessons have you learnt? I would love to know.

Ana x

Am I Still Blogging? Yes, I Still Am.

by Lina Clémence May 31, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

I am doing this blog post simply because I get soooo many questions about whether I am still blogging or not!

In my heart, I still am, but I get where the questions are coming from as it’s been like 10 months since my last blog post. I don’t have any intentions to give this up at present, it’s just that I really went through a lot in the last 10 months, health-wise and logistics-wise. The health part, I feel like it’s a conversation for another time, but for the logistics, oh boy. My iMac was debilitatingly slow and couldn’t do anything productive anymore, it could take 30 seconds to execute a single command or mouse click. It would take a right click even up to a minute before the menu would appear. On the worst days, it could hang for 20-30 minute periods and I couldn’t do anything. Even starting it up took 20-30 minutes! Simple reels that might have taken 30-40 minutes to edit would have taken days on the iMac. Since I couldn’t get anything done anymore, I had to have it checked in for diagnostics and repair, and when it came back after many weeks, it really still was slow in many ways so the entire ordeal of having a backlog pile up went on for at least half a year. It took me quite some time to acquire another computer, transfer and back up all relevant files, and set up shop. This is why I have yet to recover from the worst backlog in my own history as a content creator.

By the time I got to adjust to all the file transfers, I found myself just as overwhelmed as any other content creator. With Instagram introducing reels in late 2021 and then starting to punish any non-reel content in 2022, it became so hard to catch up with blogging as I now had to conceptualize which content would be done in a reel and which would not. And sadly, more of that needed to be in a reel, adding so much more workload strain. Before the algorithm started to punish non-reel posts, I was able to do things seamlessly somehow as I would shoot photos that I could use for both Instagram and the blog, as well as for Facebook and even Twitter. Fast forward to this month, the average content creator now has to churn out video content for Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and YouTube non-Shorts––but every single platform wants a different approach and a different kind of content.

It would take a TED talk to explain all the intricacies, but I think it’s easy to see that for creators who were able to seamlessly use photos for blog posts and Instagram + Facebook posts before, it’s now much more complex and I’m honest that I’m not able to catch up. I wish I had an editing and shooting team like other creators so that I could free up so much of my time that goes into editing, shooting, and setting up and focus that time instead on conceptualizing and ‘performing/modeling’ for shoots. Everyone wants to be an influencer these days thinking about all the glitz and glamour, but in reality, if you’re unable or unwilling to shell out the money for professional equipment or professional teams, it will really be very hard to catch up with all the content requirements in both quality and quantity these days.

Even myself, I actually can’t even tell if people even read blogs anymore. As far as this blog’s stats are concerned, it’s been generally stable, but even I wonder who are the people who are still coming to visit my blog. I’m thankful for those who still come over to read or check out swatches because all the industry clamor has been short-form video content these days.

But when I do analyze things, I still want to continue blogging because being in this for so long, what I have come to realize is that there is no single social media site that can be dominant forever. I don’t know when will the algorithm of a certain app favor my posts or when an app might start punishing me, and every year, there is a new and more dominant site that everyone wants to swarm into. I want to continue providing reviews and swatches that can be easily searched for any time without having to suffer from decay algorithms that social media sites do (i.e. the older your post, the more hidden it will get).

So I guess the best explanation I can say is that I don’t have the intention to stop blogging, I just am overwhelmed with all the new industry content requirements like the rest of the creators in this industry. As someone who does everything myself, I still really am figuring out how I can continue conceptualizing, filming, editing, and managing all the replies and follow-ups without sacrificing my health and well-being.

Please give me time to figure this out. I think I’ll get to a solution somehow.

10 Years of Blogging, Good Bye!

by Lina Clémence May 31, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Ten years ago in March 2009 I decided to start a blog.  Blogs were just starting to get popular and it was the beginning of a social media revolution.  You see I have always loved fashion and dreamt as a young girl to go to fashion school and have a career in fashion one day.  Well that dream never happened, mostly because I was the one who gave up on my own dream. Growing up as nerdy, chubby Latina girl in the ghetto of LA, that dream seemed as impossible as going to the moon.  No one ever encouraged me, mostly laughed at me, but worst of all I believed all those naysayers.  Then one day I discovered blogging, I saw a few other plus size women showing off their style.  After a few months of reading those very few plus fashion blogs, I thought hey I can do that too!  HA HA wow I must have been feeling confident that day, so I started a blog!  Boy I was wrong in thinking I knew what it took to run a blog!  I had no idea, no clue and didn’t know what I was getting my self into!.

It was a slow process, I didn’t even show my face on the blog for about 10 months. Mostly for fear of people recognizing me or worst, making fun of me.  You see Internet trolls have been around since the beginning of the Internet.  Once I gained enough courage and confidence to reveal my self on the blog, it wasn’t as bad as I imagined.  Slowing I became to discover more plus fashion, I even found some local bloggers who looked like me…plus size Latinas who also loved fashion and beauty!

Then one day I read on another blog how this one “popular” blogger received free clothes!  WHAT!  Brands started sending blogger stuff for free, all they had to do was show it off on their blog.  Whoa, this was mind blowing to me.  I had no idea this was even a possibility when I started blogging.  Then the day came when I received my very first email, a brand wanted to send me a dress to review.  I was so excited, like a kid on Christmas day! This my friends was a huge deal for me, I had secretly been envious of those other bloggers who were receiving free stuff.  It all started with that one dress, then slowing other emails came from other brands.  Then the invitation to attend blogger events.  WOW I must admit it did make me feel kinda special. LOL  I can’t lie those blogger event were always really cool, with lots of free food and booze, in some fancy places and best of all, was the swag!  Why were these brands just giving us bloggers so much free stuff.  It was simply to give them publicity and advertise their products, at a very cheap rate.   You see the early days of blogging, was a free for all, it was all so new and exciting. People had discovered they could control the type of content that was shared on the Internet.  We the average woman could show the world, how cool, cute and awesome we are, with out anyone telling us how or what to do.  No longer did we have to be subjected by Photoshopped images of perfectly airbrushed models, telling us what to wear and how to look.  We the bloggers were taking control of that image and the world was loving it.  Bloggers from every corner of the world were emerging, every color, every size and every ethnicity.  It was actually kinda magical to see it happening and most of all to be a part it.  Even in my own little way, I had become part of that fashion world I had always dreamt of as a little girl.

New blogs kept popping up so quickly it was hard to keep up. A new niche seemed to appear daily, fashion, food, beauty, travel, mommy, tech reviews….it was crazy and hard to keep up with.  Brands and Marketing agencies knew they had a gold mine with bloggers, using us to do their work for practically free (they threw us a bone here and there with free products) and occasionally paid us peanuts.  Some bloggers even achieved “celebrity” status, it was insane to see the evolution.  No longer did you see models, actors or real celebrities being featured in national name brand campaigns, it was bloggers!

I never achieved any kind of status, I was just another blogger, who happened to get in kinda early so was lucky to get a small piece of the action.  I truly loved and enjoyed blogging in the early years.  It was fun and exciting, I met many awesome people and can say some even became friends.  Something happened several years in to blogging, I saw and felt a shift in the blogging world.  Everyone wanted a piece of the pie, when bloggers started to get paid, like really get paid in the hundred thousands of dollars, some even reportedly getting millions of dollars, with huge endorsement deals.  Some bloggers were getting their own products, clothing lines, makeup lines and even TV shows.  It was crazy, and this is where I saw the claws and ugliness of blogging come out.  Every blogger in your same niche suddenly became competition, people changed.  Some were more ambitious than others, they became cut throat.  I was never successful enough in blogging to be any ones competition in my opinion, but I did receive some backlash.  All of sudden you started to hear about blogger feuds, and it appeared you had to pick sides.  I never got too involved, but guess what I was close enough to get some on me.  It seemed like over night, bloggers I had considered “friends” stopped talking to me, a few stopped following me on social media, stopping say hello to me at events and slowly stopped getting invited to events.  It took me a while to figure out, but I know what or who caused it. Honestly it didn’t surprise me, because I had heard first hand from other bloggers about these so called feuds and how it was getting cut throat. Bloggers bad mouthing other bloggers to brands and PR agencies.  I tired to brush it off, but it hurt, it stung and it sucked. I was the one who would talk to as many bloggers, when the “big” bloggers became snobs and ignored others, I was the one who befriended them.  I was the one who introduced new bloggers to other bloggers or told them about certain blogger networks to sign up for and get paid opportunities.  I never saw other as competition, but I guess that was just me being nice and naive.

So basically this long post  is to just give you all a little history of why I stopped blogging over a year ago.  Blogging was no longer fun for me, it was becoming a chore and became ugly.  Too competitive, too cut throat and too elitist for my taste.  I wasn’t getting paid, like other bloggers, I wasn’t actually getting anything  out of blogging, not even enjoyment or gratification like I had in the beginning.

I decided to take a break and reevaluated my situation.  That break was much longer than anticipated and eventually I came to the conclusion to end my blogging journey with Cid Style File. My last post was in November 2017, and honestly I only did it because it paid me a few dollars and it was a quick buck.  I was done, no longer did I have the mentality to be a part of the blogging world and play the games involved to succeed.  I am 10 years older and some may say wiser, I no longer find my self being happy blogging about fashion.  The plus fashion world has changed so much as well and its not a world I can see my self being a part of any more.  After a much needed break, I did find my self missing blogging and the wonderful people who were still friendly with me and stayed with me on social media.  I found my self changing and evolving in a way, so in early 2018 I made the decision to change my name on social media from Cid Style File to House of Cid.  I changed it on Instagram and Facebook, but had not decided what to do with the blog.  After a few more months of contemplation, I decided to just say good bye to this blog.  I have however started a YouTube channel, called House of Cid, which is something I wanted to do for many years, but was never confident enough to be a YouTuber.  I told my self I am too old now (43), not attractive enough and I’m not a millennial so basically saw it as losing battle.  But guess what, I am no quitter, and my life isn’t over because I am in my 40’s…I am sure there’s some older people who want to see themselves reflected on YouTube.  So I am giving it a go, I created a lifestyle channel and hope you come and support me, like you have done here for so many years.

Thank you to everyone reading the blog, who left comments, who supported me and who encouraged and motivated me to blog.  I met some awesome people, attended fabulous events and most all made some wonderful memories.  I am forever grateful to everyone I met through blogging and thankful to all the brands, PR agencies and marketing agencies I was allowed to work with. I truly do feel blessed to have this experience and am beyond grateful.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
