Do I need a trip to Leicester? Yes, yes, I think I do!
Cathy Lomax has curated this beautiful exhibition, Blusher: Makeup, Art and Materiality at Leicester Gallery, De Montfort University (until 6 September).
Featuring work by artists including Cary Kwok, Lisa Milroy and Rose Wylie, alongside Mary Modha’s ‘Glossy Monsters’ lipstick sculptures and Stacey Greene’s familiar photographs of worn lipstick bullets (below), it aims to look at make-up through an art lens instead of the frivolous, consumerist one we’re used to.
A former make-up artist (and movie buff), Cathy Lomax used to work for the major fashion magazines and pop musicians but more recently has turned to curating and painting her own mesmerising pictures of cinematic, beauty-led scenes and details.
Unsurprisingly, we’re also promised plenty of vintage make-up and make-up ephemera, plus an accompanying publication with essays from Cathy, Alex Michon and Hilary Belzer (founder of the Make-up Museum).
