Where Bloggers Live: Korea Is the Land of Skincare (and I Still Don’t Have a Routine)

written by Lina Clémence

Welcome to Where Bloggers Live: 2025! Happy New Year! “Where Bloggers Live” started out kind of like HGTV’s “Celebrities at Home,” but…with bloggers! We all like to peek behind the scenes and see inside people’s homes, interests, and lives, so every month this wonderful group of seven bloggers family of amazing women shares their work-spaces, homes, towns, and thoughts, with posts based on specific prompts. It’s been so interesting over the years to see the different ways each of us interpret the topics.

Oh boy. This one’s gonna be a doozy. This month’s theme is Makeup/Beauty/Skincare.

Uhm. I don’t really…do that.

I brought makeup to Korea with me, and I think I used mascara once. Which makes it extra ironic that I’ve lived in Korea, the world capital for skin care and beauty, for two years and have still not adopted a skincare routine.

I stopped wearing daily makeup around 2018 or 2019. Not because I’d given up on myself, but because I’d stopped caring what anyone else thought. I’d put on a little something for outfit photos because yeah, it helps on camera. But in real life? Nope.

Even when I did wear makeup, I’m such a face-sweater it would all melt off in minutes. Just a total waste of time and money.

That said, Korean makeup is lovely. So natural and subtle. Most of the time you can barely tell it’s there, but it still works its magic…highlighting, softening, balancing. I’ve even considered going in for a Korean makeup makeover and lesson. Maybe. We’ll see.

Now when I see Americans or other non-Koreans on TV, I’m like whoa, makeup! Like the whole point is to make sure you see it.

As for skincare, sure, I’ve tried products over the years. We all want to believe the promises on the label. But honestly? Most of them never feel all that different to me. Not enough to justify the cost or effort.

I did buy face masks to take to the US as gifts when I went back in March…

The one thing I do do (I said doo doo) is moisturize. I might wash my face with dish soap (true story), but I will always moisturize afterward. Immediately, while my skin is still damp.

I’m very particular about moisturizers. They must be light, water-based, and absolutely cannot contain sunscreen. I understand why they add it, but for me it’s like Saran Wrap—instant heat flash, pores blocked, full sweat meltdown. Let me decide when and where to use sunscreen, thank you.

My moisturizing journey started with the original Oil of Olay, stolen in drops from my mother’s vanity in the ’70s.

Mother: Did you use my Oil of Olay?
Me: No.

That lasted me for years, until they changed the formula. I blame the advent of sunscreen.

After suffering through a disappointing (and costly!) series of thick, greasy, pore-blocking imposters, my niece recommended Avalon Organics CoQ10 moisturizer. It was a bit pricier, but worth it. Light, effective, and with a lemon-vanilla scent that reminded me of homemade ice cream my aunt and uncle used to make every summer in their hand-cranked wooden bucket ice cream maker. Sadly, eventually they too jumped on the sunscreen wagon. I bought old stock off eBay for a while, but eventually it disappeared.

Then came another cycle of wasting money on disappointing products that contained (#HowManyTimesCanISaySunscreen) sunscreen, until I discovered Trader Joe’s Nourish Oil-Free Antioxidant Facial Moisturizer. It’s light, oil- and sunscreen-free, reasonably priced, and easy to find (in the US). I’ve been using it for at least five years, and unless they ruin it, it’ll go to the grave with me. I brought two bottles to Korea in 2023 and just restocked in March when I was in the US.

Did you think anyone could write seven paragraphs about moisturizer? Surprise!

And since I’ve got nothing to say about “beauty” (other than it being in the eye of the beholder) here’s a quick body moisturizer tip that I have used since my teens:

Baby oil. The cheapest kind you can find. Keep it in the shower with the shampoo and conditioner. After your shower, while you’re still wet, wrap your hair up in a towel turban, then drizzle baby oil over your body…arms, legs, everywhere (except under your boobs, no extra moisture needed there). Lightly swipe it on, give it a couple minutes (brush your teeth, blow your nose, squeegee the shower door, do Keigels, whatever), then towel off. You won’t wipe it all away, it’ll have sunk in just enough to keep you moisturized all day. Fast and cheap.

Want to feel fancy? Pour the baby oil into a resealable bottle, spritz a couple spritzes of your favorite perfume into it (just a little), use as above, and enjoy longer-lasting scent on your skin and your towels. And no, it won’t ruin your towels.  You’re welcome.

And I can’t talk about skincare without mentioning that South Korea is the skincare capital of the world. Koreans really do have stunning skin. That “glass skin” look..smooth, poreless perfection. They market products to help you get it, but honestly, I think they’re just born that way. Decades of sun avoidance, umbrellas, visors, hats, masks, sunscreen every day. I think that’s what keeps their skin so beautiful.

You’ve probably heard of the 10-step Korean skincare routine: double cleanse (oil + water-based), exfoliate, toner, essence, serum, sheet mask, eye cream, moisturizer, click your heels three times and clap your hands. And sunscreen, of course. Every single day. That’s…a lot. Of steps. Of products. Of money. Pass.

In conclusion: I may look ugly…but at least it was cheap to look this way 🙂

Take a look at my friends’ blogs as well, to see why they’re so beautiful…inside and out…

Life This Week in South Korea: July 7-13, 2025

by Lina Clémence July 19, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Monday, July 7

It doesn’t look pretty, but it’s yum. Chicken kebab bowl with french fries.

Big News! I left the building! Ha ha. I walked with friend K to the kebab place in the alleyway behind our building to get dinner. Not far, but far enough, as it is HOT.

Was in the mood for an italian ice, but…I don’t think that’s a thing in Korea. I got this mystery cup instead. You know the like wax coke bottle candies? This is sort of like that, but ice instead of wax…and super tart fruit flavors instead cola. Did not like. Ate anyway.

Started my clean-out. Went through like 15 spiral notebooks and had to tear all the pages out so they could go in one bin and the metal spiral thingies could go in another. THAT was not a fun task, but it’s done and the pile is smaller. Tomorrow is the textbooks.

NOT a fun task.

Tuesday, July 8

Hibiscus is the national flower of Korea. This is like a weed bush on Long Island. They reseed themselves EVERYWHERE and when it’s not flowering it’s a very nondescript shrub.

Whoa. Woke up this morning and felt like going outside for a walk. Of course, the hottest day of the year and NOW I want to go out! So I walked around the lake on campus, took some pictures. Probably won’t make that walk again. I did not go up the hill…and I was not carrying a heavy bookbag, so it wasn’t as difficult as it used to be to walk to class…and I stopped and sat everytime there was a spot to stop and sit.

Came back, cold-showered, did my remote work, fought with some things on the computer, lay down for just a little bit with my eyes closed – did not fall asleep. Got KFC, watched an episode of my current kdrama…fought with the computer some more…

Wisteria-covered pergola at the top of the lake. This used to be my rest stop on my way to class, before I started my ascent on the hill.

I’m trying to do a 30-day challenge on TikTok – preparing to leave Korea. But I’m filming on a little video camera and I transfer them to the laptop with the sd card and THEN comes the struggle of trying to get them onto the phone to upload to TikTok (I can upload them from my laptop but I can’t add captions or music or anything). Phone cable, bluetooth, airdrop, icloud, onedrive, dropbox…I’m trying all these things…the video is not even 2 minutes long, people upload MUCH larger files to their phones, why does it have to be such a problem every time I try to do it?? I finally got it moved over, I can’t even tell you how I did it cuz I was trying so many things, it was just finally in my files on my phone, I have no idea what put it there. But I hate when the computer fights me. Why can’t we all just get along??

These are the lake geese.

Lotte Tower

Finally got to an iconic Seoul destination I’ve wanted to go to since I first got here! Two friends went with me, and I was glad of that cuz otherwise I might have bailed at the last minute.

View to the west, overlooking the Han River, with Namsan Tower on the mountain in the distance right under the sun.

Lotte Tower is the tallest building in Korea, and the sixth tallest in the world. Up near the tippy top they have some observation decks where you can see a lot of Seoul laid out before you. It’s not in the MIDDLE of Seoul, but it’s in the midst.

We tried to pick out landmarks, but couldn’t quite place where we live (they both live in my building).

Seoul is the land of high-rise apartment complexes. The big green space is Olympic Park, the main venue for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Now it’s a giant cultural and recreational space. I went there once with She Who is Dead to Me in the fall of 2023 when we were trying to find pink muhly grass and walked a MILLION miles. Never found the pink muhly grass. But I can attest to the fact that the park is HUGE.

The evening was SO HOT. I think the day maxxed out at 99 degrees (F).

I got home just in time for a (quick cold shower and a) 10pm call from an insurance broker (#thankstammy) and got some clarity on my whole “after Korea,, after 65, traveling internationally” situation…and it looks like it might be a little more affordable than I’d at first thought. I still have to decide on the international insurance. I’d been working with a broker there, too, but she’s disappeared ;-\ But at least all that is getting sorted out.

Thursday, July 10

Sky from my window.

Stayed in and took it easy today. I’ve started a daily series on TikTok: 30 Days til I Leave South Korea, and every day I’ll be sharing what I did that day to prepare to leave, sometimes it’ll be real prep stuff, like getting rid of stuff in my room or getting my last Korean haircut…and other days it will be me doing something from my “before I leave Korea” bucket list. Like yesterday was the trip to Lotte Tower…and today was how I have to start eating/using up all the food in my room.

I used to post my daily OOTDs on TikTok every day without fail, when Fashion Schlub was still more…fashion. But when I started being more about Korean content and just my daily life, I just could not get into a regular routine. Now I have No Excuses! And so part of the series is me challenging myself to post something every day and to learn more video/editing stuff. Cuz right now I’m Really Bad.

If you’re interested, I’m at Bettye’s Big Adventure

Friday, July 11

Ironically, I’ve had the thought a couple times this week…”ooh, I didn’t take a nap today!” I thought maybe I was all caught up on my rest. So today I was surprised when, while I did have plans, I just kept sleeping and sleeping…all the way til 12:30pm!

Capybara pudding hee hee

I did get myself up and out around 6:30 to go to a cafe that has capybara shaped jiggly pudding, whicb I’ve wanted to try since even before I came to Korea! It was three bus rides away, which is more than I typically do (my limit is usually two), but I made it. Had a nice little dinner of a really good cream cheese and tomato bagel sandwich, which was way more tasty than I expected…a lemon pomegranate ade (they’re all about the ades here)…and the yummy capybara-shaped chocolate pudding.

It was late and dark (8:30) by the time I was all done, so I ubered home.

Saturday, July 12

Guess What I Did?!?

I went into “my” coffee shop! The new “regret” coffee shop. Today was their opening day. I was busy all morning getting rid of stuff in my room that’s not going home with me (that was not much fun), so it was late by the time I went and they had no more baked goods 🙁 The banana bread had looked So Good on their Instagram. But the barista (maybe the owner) gave me the sweetest orange to make up for it, which I thought was very kind. I loved sitting at the table in front of the window, it was great people watching on a Saturday afternoon. There was a man sitting at a a table when I got there, working on his laptop, so that’s a thing. I will definitely take advantage of my remaining few (FOUR) weeks here to work in the coffee shop with all the cool kids, ha ha.

Since today was a productive day, tomorrow should be a fun day, but I don’t know what. There are a lot of places I won’t go on the weekend cuz they’re just too crowded. But it looks like a lot of rain is coming in the next week, so…it’s a tough call. I never did make the spring/summer bucket list wheel.

Sunday, July 13

Crashed today. I did a lot more this week than I’d been doing and I think it caught up with me. And more on the agenda for next week!

PS: I’m writing this on Monday, July 14…when I was just walking home from the bus, I was passing The Coffee Shop and the barista/owner was out front fiddling with the awning…she saw me, did the “ooh!” recognition face and head nodded to me and I head nodded to her…and look,  I’M PRACTICALLY A REGULAR!!! 🙂

Olive young awards 2023 recap/ Trending K-beauty products in Korea

by Lina Clémence July 12, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

With Olive Young being the mega mall housing the most Korean cosmetic brands in one store, I’m not sure why I never knew they had their awards that happen yearly.  They’ve had their award system since 2015 and their awards are pulled from data on which products sold the most in each category.  Compared to Glowpick’s awards, I find Olive Young’s awards to be more generalized and less specific.  Maybe it would be fun to cross reference Olive Young’s to Glowpicks, so let me know if you guys want me to do a recap for Glowpick’s awards as well.  I recognized some products in the title picture already, so let’s discover what was the hot Korean cosmetic trend that was popular in Korea.

P.S. I’ve included affiliated links for all the products down below and have also found the stores with the best prices.  Feel free to use them to help support the blog :).  Also feel free to use “XTINAHELLO10” for extra discount on Olive Young Global.

Best Korean cleansing products 20231st place: Manyo factory pure cleansing oil
2nd place: Bioderma Sensibio H2O
3rd place: Banila Co clean it zero cleansing balm original
Runner up: Be-plain mung bean mildly acidic cleansing foam

Out of the four cleansing products in this picture, I’ve oddly only tried two out of the four.  I have tried Manyo Factory pure cleansing oil, but I don’t feel like it was anything revolutionary or different.  I’m not sure what all the hype is about.  Bioderma is a solid product, which can be found at Shoppers drug mart for those of you who live in Canada.  It removes makeup decently, however, you will need to use oil-based make up remover for eyeliner and mascara if you want to get every inch off of your face.  Oddly, I still haven’t tried the Banila Co cleansing balm, and that one is an absolute classic!

Best korean toners 20231st place: Round lab 1025 Dokdo toner
2nd place: Anua heartleaf 77% soothing toner
3rd place: Bring green tea tree cica soothing toner
Runner up: Abib heartleaf calming toner

Korean toners have become a huge trend, but which one is the best Korean toner you ask?  Round lab being number one doesn’t surprise me.  I have tried it, love it and it is still worth the hype.  It is lightweight, hydrating yet softening and somewhat plumping.  Although it isn’t hydrating enough for me living in Vancouver, it is still a product I occasionally grab to prep my skin.

Anua Heartleaf soothing toner is another Korean toner I’ve tried in the past.  I know it has been super hyped the last year.  I have tried it many times, however, I thought it was just okay and passed it on to a friend.  It is a very calming, soothing, lightweight, watery toner that does the job well.  I just don’t find it to live up to the crazy hype it has at the moment.

I have never tried to Bring green tea tree cica soothing toner.  From the sound of it, it would benefit those with oily to acne-prone skin that needs the tea tree to control sebum and breakouts, while the cica would calm and soothe the skin.

Lastly Abib Heartleaf calming toner I feel like should be in second place and not runner-up.  It was much more memorable than the Anua toner.  I feel like it was much more soothing and hydrating!!

Best korean toner pads 20231st place: Skinfood carrot carotene claming water pad
2nd place: Abib heartleaf spot pad calming touch
3rd place: Mediheal madecasssoside blemish pad
Runner up: Numbuzin no. 5 vitamin niacinamide concentrated pads

No surprise, the Skinfood carrot carotene calming water pad is number one!!  I recently got the chance to try it and I TOTALLY GET THE HYPE.  Read my review here.  The pad itself has the softness cotton, while the essence was skin penetratingly soothing.  You can also peel the cotton pads into two, making them great for spot masks.  it also works for all skin types too!

Abib Heartleaf Spot Pad Calm Touch was also another product I thoroughly enjoyed.  I sadly didn’t get the chance to write the review here, however, you have to take my word for it.  The pad was super thin, soaked up all the essence well, and just like the Heartleaf toner, it was super calming, soothing, and hydrating.

Mediheal madecassoside blemish pad is currently trending on Tiktok.  I’ve been testing it out for the past month, but I don’t think this version was built for my skin type.  I have dry skin, not prone to acne, so this doesn’t give much results for my skin type.  I saw another girl on TikTok trying out the same version but she has very acne-prone skin.  Within just three days of using it, a lot of her pimples calmed down and were in the process of fading away.  For me, it is just a mildly hydrating pad that somewhat soothes my skin.

I’ve heard lots of great things from the brand Numbuzin, but I still haven’t gotten around to trying the brand.  They are definitely on my radar!!

Best Korean face mask 20231st place: Mediheal tea tree essential mask
2nd place: Torriden dive-in low molecular hyaluronic acid mask
3rd place: Ilso natural mild clear nose pack
Runner up: Hanyul soft chestnut sebum controlling pore clay pack

Best korean serums 20231st place: Isoi blemish serum
2nd place: Goodal green tangerine vita C blemish care serum
3rd place: Torriden dive-in low molecular hyaluronic acid serum
Runner up: Wellage real hyaluronic blue 100 ampoule

I really wish I wasn’t deathly allergic to rose ingredient in skincare.  I’ve heard so much of the Isoi blemish serum that it makes me tempted to try it.  I just don’t want to end up with severely dry, red, and itchy skin for the next two weeks.

Goodal Green Tangerine Vita C blemish care serum is another product that is getting super hyped right now on Tiktok.  I have tried a small deluxe sample of it and thought it was alright.  I don’t believe the vitamin C content in this is strong enough to use during the day with my sunscreen to combat hyperpigmentation.

Torriden dive-in low molecular hyaluronic acid serum is also another super hyped product and I’m also not surprised it is on the list.  Do I think it is all that?  No, I don’t.  If you are looking for a hyaluronic acid serum that hydrates and plumps your skin, I would suggest you check out Isntree hyaluronic acid water essence.  It does the job amazingly and I loved every drop of it.

Best korean moisturizer 20231st place: Dr. G red blemish clear soothing cream
2nd place: Aestura atobarrier 365 cream
3rd place: Physiogel DMT facial cream
Runner up: La Roche posay cicaplast balm B5+

I’m kind of surprised to see some Western brands in the mix here.  Out of everything on the list, I have only tried La Roche Posay cicaplast balm B5+, which is a solid and reliable product that helps with all sorts of things.  It is also a product I got my goddaughter on for her enzyme, and so far it has been working splendidly.

I still want to get my hands on the Aestura atobarrier 365 cream.  So many people have been hyping it up!  I’m curious to see how well it will work on my dry skin type.

Best korean sunscreen 20231st place: Round lab birch moisture sun cream
2nd place: Dr. G green mild up sun plus
3rd place: Cellfusion C laser sunscreen 100
Runner up: D’alba waterful tone-up sun cream

To my surprise, I have tried every sunscreen here!  Round lab birch moisture sun cream is no surprise.  It is a gorgeously formulated, lightweight chemical sunscreen that leaves no white cast, hydrates the skin, and leaves your skin feeling plump and not dry even after reapplication.

Dr. G green mild up sun plus is more suited for those who have oily to combination skin types.  It fairs more on the matte side and has a little bit of a white cast.

Cellfushion C laser sunscreen 100 is another solid sunscreen.  Lightweight, absorbs into the skin well, and has no white cast.  What more can you ask for?

Lastly, D’Alba waterful tone-up sun cream is similar to Round Lab Birch moisture sun cream with its lightweight and almost watery texture.  There is a bit of a “brightening” effect from the tone though, so I don’t reach for this one much.

Best Korean men skincare products 2023

1st place: Ideal for men perfect all-in-one milk
2nd place: Ulos skin wash
3rd place: Dashu classic style grooming tonic
Runner up: Be Ready true tone lotion

I have never seen any of these brands, nor am I a man.  So…. no comment here.  Let me know if you guys enjoy these products or not.

Best Korean make up products 20231st place: Banila Co prime primer finish powder
2nd place: Too cool for school by Rodin shading no. 1 classic
3rd place: Cosnori whitening dress tone up cream
Runner up: The Saem cover perfection triple pot concealer

Out of all four products, I have only tried the Too Cool for school by Rodin shading powder.  It is still a solid product that isn’t too warm or grey and can still compete in 2024.  Heck, I tried this product back in 2017 and it does not feel dated at all.  To my shock, they’ve expanded not only the contour shade range but the blush and highlighters too!  There are 3-4 shades to choose from for each category, not just one shade!!

Best Korean BB cushion 2023
1st place: Clio kill cover the new founwear cushion
2nd place: Laneige neo cushion matte
3rd place: Fwee cushion glass
Runner up: Espoir pro tailor be velvet cover cushion

All of these cushions seem to cater to those who like matte finishes.  I can’t speak on the Fwee cushion glass or Espoir pro tailor be velvet cover cushion though.  I know for a fact Clio kill cover the new founwear cushion and Laneige Neo Cushion matte are both matte finishes.

I’ve tried the glowy version of the Clio cushion and wasn’t impressed.  I didn’t feel like the formula adhered to my skin well and it clung to every dry patch I had.  As for the Laneige neo cushion glow, I also had the same issue where it didn’t adhere to my skin well and it was kind of drying for me.

Best Korean eyeshadow palette 2023

1st place: Wakemake soft blurring eye pallet 02 vitality blurring
2nd place: Dasique shadow pallet 07 milk latte
3rd place: Rom&nd better than Pallete 06 peony nude garden
Runner up: Lilybyred Mood Keyboard 04 cool

Dasique is a relatively new brand that has come into the scene with a splash.  I had the opportunity to buy two of their matte palettes and love them both to pieces.  I’m curious to try the rest of their palettes and products.  I recently received their concealer palettes and the new hydrating primer, so I’ll report back on that in a separate review.

Best Korean lip tint 2023

1st place: Rom&nd juicy lasting tint in 25 bare grape
2nd place: Peripera ink mood glow tint in 03 rose in mind
3rd place: Muzigae mansion object liquid in 03 stranger
Runner up: 3CE blur matte lipstick in Rosiness

OKAY, I have to say the Romand juicy lasting tint in 25 bare grapes is my new obsession!!!!  I recently added it to my collection because I love that series from Romand.  I can’t believe I didn’t have that shade before.  It is the perfect MLBB with a hint of a grape-purple undertone.  It’s STUNNING.  Check out my review and swatches on those puppies.

Best korean eyeliner mascara 20231st place: Clio kill lash superproof mascara
2nd place: Kiss me heroine make smooth liquid eyeliner
3rd place: Clio kill brow auto hard brow pencil
Runner up: Too cool for school art class frottage pencil

I need to get my hands on the Clio kill lash superproof mascara.  So many people have raved about it online and I still have yet to try it!!

Best korean beauty tools 20231st place: Piccasso make up spatula
2nd place: Filimili eye make up brush set
3rd place: Filimili heating eyelash curler
Runner up: Coringco toktokhara filter eyelash black

Piccaso make up spatula is well worth your money.  I’ve seen people try and replicate it with butter knives, but it just isn’t the same.  The sides of the spatula is rounded, making it easy to apply and spread foundation effortlessly.  Check out my full review on it.

Best korean lip care 20231st place: Bioderma atoderm lip balm
2nd place: Uriage stick lévres original
3rd place: YNM Rainbow Honey lip balm
Runner up: Etude ginger sugar overnight lip mask

I’m shocked my holy grail Etude ginger sugar overnight lip mask is only a runner-up!  The INSULT.  I have been using that lip mask since 2016 every single day without fail and I truly can’t live without it.  I find my lips get flakey and dry without it during the day.  At night, I slather it on and wake up to it still on my lips.  It is on the thicker side, so some people might find that a problem.  For me, I love it because it protects my lips for so long.

I’m very curious to try the YNM rainbow honey lip balm.  The packaging looks interesting and I’m curious to see what the public has to say about that product.

Best korean hand cream 20231st place: Kamill hand & nail cream classic
2nd place: W.Dressroom perfume hand cream no.97 April cotton
3rd place: Beyond classic hand cream deep moisture
Runner up: Sky Bottle white rain perfume hand cream

Best korean body care 20231st place: Illiyoon ceramide ato lotion
2nd place: Bioderma atoderma ultra cream
3rd place: Derma B daily moisture body lotion
Runner up: Tree hut shea sugar scrub

Best Korean perfume 2023

1st place: Forment signature perfume cotton huge
2nd place: Clean warm cotton
3rd place: John Varvatos Artisan
Runner up: Narciso pure musk for her

Here’s a funny story.  Recently I was organizing my perfume sample collection and found a vial of Clean warm cotton.  I was trying to open it gently to take a whiff of the scent, but I ended up spilling 2 mL of it all over my body and clothes.  At first, I thought to myself “Oh, this smells nice and clean.  Just like laundry!”  After a while, it started to smell like washroom cleaner or hospital gown laundry detergent.  With all that being said, make sure to smell fragrances and not blindly buy it because you think you’ll like the scent profile.  I did that recently with a DKNY Be Delicious perfume and regretted it.

Best Korean hair care products 2023

1st place: Unove deep damange treatment EX
2nd place: Mise-en-scene perfect original serum

2nd place: Dr.Forhair polygen shampoo
3rd place: Rausch coltsfoot anti-dandruff shampoo

Life These Days in South Korea: May 22-June 1, 2025

Thursday, May 22

I finally, after what felt like a 97-hour journey, arrived back home to the goshiwon at 3am. Like the trip to Japan, this one also had many moving parts for me to be anxious about. And I was too anxious to try to take my anti-anxiety meds with me, so…

The ferry from Japan arrived in Busan, South Korea around 12:30pm. Then there’s the whole immigration/customs process, about which I was Very Nervous – what if they said NOPE, you can’t come back in. Technically, they can do that. They don’t need grounds. They can deny admission (admission?) to anyone they want. So it was a relief to get through there with no problems. Ferry security is a little less High Pressure on the whole security thing anyway.

I discovered my phone was not working…the international plan I’d set up with Verizon had ended…and apparently immigration notifies the phone services immediately, that I am no longer a resident and so my Korean phone number will be cancelled. It was actually a little confusing if it was being shut down now or not til June 16 (random date). My automatic billing date is the 22nd, which is today, so we’ll see what happens. If I lose the Korean phone number I will probably also lose grocery and food delivery…and maybe some other things I’m not even thinking of.

So – No Phone = SUPER ANXIETY for me. No phone in an unfamilar place? acjnSCHNwknciuaxjnqs12iuey9327r8ufjwnc.

Fortunately, there were taxis right outside the ferry port and I got someone to (slightly begrudgingly) take me to the express bus terminal (it’s 45 mins from the ferry). I got there 2 hours before the bus to Seoul was due to depart and since Busan is not Seoul, there were only a few little independent food places and they were all getting ready to close up shop. I managed to get a corn dog and a kitkat so at least I didn’t starve to death while I was waiting.

What I DID do while waiting, was reach out to Verizon to see if I could restart the international plan for a few more days while I got my Korean phone number sorted out. She was like, why don’t you go on the Ultimate Unlimited Plan which offers unlimited international service to 210+ countries and it’s only $1 more than your current plan??

Uh, YEAH, why DON’T I go on that? Why didn’t anyone offer me that when I first moved to Korea? Why didn’t anyone offer me that just last week when I signed up for the $12/day International Plan?? Sigh. Anyway. That’s a relief to have. I still need a Korean phone number for some things here, but if I can’t get my permanent number sorted out I’ll just have to get a Korean sim card with a tempory number. It won’t allow me to order groceries/food, but…

Anyway. Finally the bus came and it was super luxe. It was a 4-hour trip from 10pm-2am. We had a slight delay with an elderly woman who was crying, then screaming, then scooted on her butt on the floor up to the driver…he tried calling someone…she finally calmed down and walked back to her seat and we carried on. I never understood what the problem was. All I could make out was him saying “please don’t cry.” Thank you 18mos of Korean language school.

Again, when I got to Seoul, even though it was after 2am, there were taxis right out front, so there was no transportation issue. I walked into mmy room around 3:30am and was like WHAT HAPPENED HERE?!?

Then I remembered that, because I had to have the landlady in while I was away to fix my sink, I had REALLY cleaned up before I left. I just didn’t recognize it so neat! But what a nice surprise that was!

I’d rescheduled my dr’s appt for this morning cuz I knew it would just be too much to get up and out that early the morning after All That Traveling…so I just took it easy today.

I was supposed to go tonight to a kpop concert at my school…my building friend Kim likes one of the girl groups, and I thought it would be fun to see Psy (“Gangnam Style”) in person, but…I just did not have it in me to stand in line from 2pm to get seats for a show that didn’t start til 8pm. From my window I could hear when they cheered for Psy, it was so loud!

And now I am officially a language school dropout and just a “tourist” in Korea. I booked my flight to LA for Aug 8, so that’s like 11 weeks. I want to re-do my “to do” list so I make sure when I leave I’ve done all the things I’ve most wanted to do.

And I’m sorta looking forward to being in the states for a bit…I’m house/pet sitting for my niece when she and her family go to Hawaii for 11 days. It’ll be nice to stay in a super comfortable house with a car!!! While I’ve spent a ton of time in LA over my lifetime, I’m really never there independently so I’m making a list of things I want to do while I’m there. After a couple weeks there I’ll head to San Antonio to stay with other family for a couple weeks…and then finish up in Florida with Katie for the last month…then be back in Japan for November 1.

Friday, May 23

I’d sorta had plans today just locally, just with myself. But when I woke up I was so congested, I didn’t want to be out in public trying not to sniff or cough or blow my nose. It’s 3:00 in the afternoon and I’ve gone through over half a roll of toilet paper with nose blowing. Enough Already! I’ve had this cold since April 14!!!

I spent the day in my nightgown (yay) working on a couple blog posts for the next few weeks. It’s so nice to be able to spend more time working on posts without feeling guilty that I’m not studying.

I’m trying to post more consistently about life in Korea…vs just MY life in Korea…and things related to traveling, travel on a budget, traveling with anxiety, etc. Eventually I’ll take these same topics to other countries.

Is there anything in particular about Korea or traveling on the cheap that you’re interested in, that I can write about while I’m still here?

Saturday, May 24

Did I do anything today? Not really. Worked on a weekly “itinerary” for my weeks so I don’t just laze my days away. It’s very general so far – now I have to prepare lots of STUFF. It starts Monday.

Sunday, May 25

I headed out this morning on an easy mission. An apartment building being taken over by climbing roses in the neighboring town, Seongsu, and I wanted to take pictures. Then to a donut place I’ve been wanting to try for ages. And on the way home stop at the phone store to see about extending my phone number the rest of the time I’m here.

From the bus on the way to Seongsu I could see the phone store wasn’t open. I’d suspected it might be closed on Sundays. I found the climbing roses easily enough. But I got to the donut store an hour before opening (at 11:30am). Interestingly, regular restaurants open early in the morning, but donut shops and many cafes not til later, closer to noon. And I don’t care for spicy stew first thing in the morning. So I walked around for half an hour looking for somewhere I could sit inside, but found nothing. All the chain coffee shops (Starbucks, Mega Coffee, etc) are out on the big main streets and I was deeper inside the neighborhood. And already felt I was reaching my walking limit. So with another half hour to go I said oh forget it and headed back to the bus stop.

Which was right next to an open chain coffee shop. Of course, ha. I headed home anyway. Stopped at the convenience store when I got off the bus. I wanted a sandwich. I got what I thought was ham and cheese. But was actually ham, cheese, and crab. Like a crab spread. They always put something on sandwiches that I don’t think belongs.

Monday, May 26

I went with my school/building friend, G, to get his hair cut. I had a couple things to get in the mall so I didn’t mind going along with him. But ArtBox, where I was going to get new pens, was closed…and the market didn’t have the roasted chicken I was looking for, so…I was forced to sit in Starbucks with a bagel and a Grapefruit Honey Black Iced Tea. Life’srough.

Since that was my outing for the day, the rest of the day was spent indoors making my list of things I want to do/accomplish this week, and a nap while listening to a new book I’m not crazy about.

I have a very limited selection of audiobooks. I refuse to pay $$$ for them. Mostly I listen on Spotify but most of the books I want to read are longer than the 10-hour limit so then I have to wait til the next month to finish and that’s annoying. One month when I was reading something I was really enjoying, I paid extra to get extra hours…and what’s unused is supposed to carry over from month-to-month, but now I can’t figure out how to access them again.

I can’t get Libby set-up again til I’m back in the states.

But I had some books on Chirp that I bought long ago when I was a heavy audiobook user (whenn I was driving 100 miles a day to and from work), so I’m working my way through those. Even though so far I’m not loving them.

Tuesday, May 27

Headed over to the phone store to see about extending my Korean phone # the rest of the time I’m here. It said online it opened at 9am. I got there at 9:30, not open. I waited til 10:15. No one ever showed up. There wasn’t like a coffee shop or anything in the area to hang out in…and the sun was hot while I was just standing out on the street. So I went home. I’ll try again after my eye appointment on Thursday.

I came back and spent some time updating my Korean Anki (flashcard app) decks to continue learning more vocabulary. And spent an hour on my first Japanese lesson. Whoa. THREE different alphabets, all used for different things…like within the same sentence. I thought it was confusing (and it is!) that in Korean they use two sets of numbers. One for like counting, and the other for like telling time, etc. And even with time, you used one set for hour, and the other set for minute. I was forever getting numbers mixed up.

I finished the really long remote work project I’ve been working on for over a month.

Napped. Scrambled eggs and sausage for dinner. Finished a cute Japanese drama.

Wednesday, May 28

Not sure what happened. My alarm was set for 6am, I wanted to go to a rose garden while the light was still low and there wouldn’t be many people there. I don’t remember ever hearing the alarm, but I woke up around 8:30 with the alarm set to snooze.

So, I opted for a lazy stay-in day.

And then proceeded to spend three hours, with the help of ChatGPT, to try and fix my blog emails that have not been sending for some time. Do any of you still get them? Every step required 2-3 pre-steps. Ugh. I hate things like this…and in the past (and why it hasn’t been working for so long) I would say “oh I don’t have time for that right now.” But now I do…so I’m hell bent on fixing it. It’s still in process, but…I’ll get there.

I just got a new work assignment, so I’ll spend the afternoon on that. Oh, it’s already 3pm. I haven’t had any lunch. I’ll eat and then get to work.

I feel really relaxed these past few days. It’s good.

Thursday, May 29

Alrighty. Guess what I get to do next week??

ANOTHER EYE SURGERY.

Not the originally planned procedure to remove the silicone oil…but an all new surgery because the retina is detaching again. A different, more complicated procedure that hopefully (knock on wood) should hold this time.

And…after I went through all that back and forth about my insurance before I headed to Japan (cuz remember I lose the Korean National Insurance when I’m not a student anymore)…and ended up paying $500+ for an international medical insurance for three months….today they said I’m still on the Korean insurance. I was like that’s a mistake, they called them, I spoke with a woman AT the National Health Insurance. I explained about no longer being on a D4 visa, that now I was a tourist and I had a new “leave by” date. She was like, as far as we’re concerned, as long as you keep making your payments, you’re on the insurance until August 23. So. That’s good. And now I’m trying to see if I can get any refund on the International insurance…if they say no, I’ll ask if I can just change my end date, and apply the insurance to the next time I leave the US.

But in the meantime, even WITH insurance it’s still $$$ out of pocket. And I’m really hating the Korean hospital experience. The useless pain meds, the uncomfortable hospital costume, the food. And then the whole two-weeks-face-down again. And the painful eye and the endless eyedrops.

Ugh.

So, my day, that I thought was going to be an hour going through follow-up testing at the hospital, then a trip to the phone store to get my number sorted out, turned into five sweaty hours running around in the hospital ($250) for pre-surgical testing and then home to collapse.

Friday, May 30

My alarm was set for 6am…but I woke up at 5am to lovely light…so went ahead and got up and headed to Daeyeonsan Rose Garden. I started out on the bus, but the second bus never came (sometimes the app says the bus will arrive in just a few minutes…but the signage at the bus stop says it’s going to arrive in like 52 minutes. I’ll wait for the earliest one, but if it doesn’t come, I reroute myself or sometimes – like today – end up in an uber). The driver got me to the general area, not understanding I wanted the rose gardren, not just the park entrance. And I did not realize the rose garden was up a hill. And stairs. Sigh.

All of Korea is up hills. Amd stairs.

Anyway, I made it. And it was well worth it.

I’ll just share a couple pictures here cuz I’m going to do a separate post on the garden itself.

I got pretty emotional, sitting there taking in the beauty. My sister and I used to love going on summer garden tours and we especially enjoyed old and climbing roses. I was grateful it was early and there weren’t that many people around.

And when I left I had to walk up another, super steep hill to the bus stop. It was one of the micro-local busses and it was such a fun ride going up and down steep steep, narrow, winding roads…with someone else driving, ha ha.

The rest of the day was spent doing remote work, editing rose pictures, and studying Japanese. With a mid-day nap 🙂

Other than ^(*#U^@!! eye surgery, I’m finally enjoying retirement. I despise obligations. Sometimes even when they’re my own. I don’t want anything to impinge on My Time.

Saturday, May 31

Another month’s end. Just two full months and 8 days left in Korea. And my stupid eye will take up close to one of those months…with surgery, face-down time, then just general discomfort time. I’m really aggravated but what are you gonna do. But I can hardly believe that’s all the time I have left!

In more stupid news, I finally got to the phone store and was told no, I cannot extend my phone number/service til I leave Korea in August. I will have to get a new Korean sim card with a new Korean phone number. I told him not today, cuz a) according to the text from the phone company, I have two more weeks til they shut me down, and b) maybe, just maybe, the phone company will follow suit with the insurance company and just keep me turned on as long as I’m paying. It’s worth a shot. And frankly I don’t even know that I need a Korean sim card at this point as I have the international plan now from Verizon and have unlimted international data, talk, text on my US phone number.

And I’m not entirely sure I’ll lose food and grocery delivery. I needed the phone number to set them up…but now they go through my Korean bank for the money…and I’m still able to move money into the Korean bank without the Korean phone number, so…I’m not sure if immigration just notifies everyplace (like they did the phone co) and says NO MORE CHICKEN FOR HER.

Anyway, that was my little outing for the day. Other than that, just remote work, photo editing, chatting with a NY friend on Instagram…

Sunday, June 1

I mostly just grumbled to myself about having to go to the hospital tomorrow for TWO DAYS before they even do the surgery. I Do Not Understand. I’m taking my laptop and to-do list and will find somewhere with desk.counter seating and at least get some work done. Once the eye is surgered it’s hard to do much of anything involving seeing for awhile.

I finally got onto the Medicare site thinking there was gonna be a whole rigamorole to get signed up, but no. It’s pretty much automatic if you’re only doing the first two levels (Plans A & B), and that’s all I’m doing for the time being as most of my time, at least for the coming year, will be spent out of the country.

Laundry, putting away a Coupang order, straightening up the room so a) it will be nice when I come back exhausted and b) in case they need to come in while I’m gone. Last year this is the week they cleaned all the air conditioners, so…

And it’s June. Happy June.

Wish me luck with the stupid hospital and the stupid eye surgery.

See ya later luv ya bye.
