Loro Piana Why Brands Like Zara Are Winning the Real Luxury Game

The name Loro Piana has long stood for rarefied elegance – buttery-soft cashmere, whisper-thin wool, and price tags that scream silent exclusivity. But now, beneath the refined surface lies a bitter truth – one that threatens to unravel not only Loro Piana’s reputation but the entire romantic notion of Made in Italy as luxury’s gold standard.

An Italian court has placed Loro Piana under judicial administration for a year, citing gross negligence in overseeing its supply chain. The charge? Allowing laborers to be worked to the bone – 90 hours a week for under $5/hour – in what amounts to modern-day sweatshops. The workers, many undocumented immigrants from China, were found sleeping in illegally built dormitories inside the factories. Yes, the same factories that make those $7,000 coats gracing Milan’s elite boutiques.

Let that sink in.

Armani, Valentino, Dior – Luxury’s Rotten Core

Loro Piana is not alone. The list of shame includes Giorgio Armani, Valentino, Dior, and Alviero Martini. All have been found guilty of turning a blind eye to brutal subcontracting practices that have become a cancer in the Italian fashion industry.

You’d think that when you pay €2,000 for a coat or €5,000 for a handbag, you’re supporting artisans who work with care and pride in sunlit Tuscan ateliers. Think again. In many cases, you’re subsidizing shell companies and illegal sweatshops run by mafia-style networks of exploitation.

And here’s the kicker – the brands aren’t contracting these sweatshops directly. They go through layers of “ghost companies” – middlemen who don’t even have the machinery to sew a button but are used to distance the brand from the crimes.

It’s clever. It’s evil. And it’s business as usual.

This is Made In Italy, Dolce & Gabbana

Made in Italy – But At What Human Cost?

As someone who has spent over a decade in the luxury trenches – reviewing over 400 luxury hotels, driving Bentleys across the Alps, and wearing head-to-toe bespoke tailoring – I’ve seen both the sublime and the shameful side of this industry. I’ve walked the floors of Pitti Uomo, the temple of Italian menswear, only to be bullied, sidelined, and disrespected as a woman with an opinion.

If they can treat press like that, imagine what’s happening behind closed factory doors.

Italy sells a fantasy. The rolling hills of Tuscany. Grandmothers hand-sewing collars by candlelight. Leather cured the old-fashioned way. But the truth is more dystopian than Dolce Vita. Behind those scenes are underpaid migrants, 20-hour shifts, and warehouses with no ventilation. The country’s luxury output is held together by an invisible army of ghost laborers, hidden in plain sight.

And the industry has known this for years. They just didn’t think they’d get caught.

Meanwhile… Zara Is Winning

Yes, you read that right.

While Italian brands posture and panic, Zara is quietly taking over luxury’s turf. Their design team reacts to trends in real time. Their supply chain is centralized, traceable, and increasingly transparent. Workers in Spain and Portugal operate under regulated conditions. The clothing isn’t haute couture – but it’s honest, wearable, and affordable.

Zara’s strength is in its clarity and control. They own their narrative. Italian luxury, on the other hand, is fragmented and chaotic – a web of middlemen, hidden contracts, and no accountability. When an issue arises, it takes police raids and court orders to bring the truth to light.

You can’t call that luxury. That’s just exploitation with a nice Luxottica logo.

The Illusion of Craftsmanship

Italian fashion prides itself on “heritage.” But what does that mean when Chinese sweatshops in Prato are sewing your Loro Piana coat?

The idea that every item has been touched by an Italian artisan is now a dangerous lie.

Luxury is meant to stand for excellence, ethics, and emotion. Yet it’s Zara that offers ethical vegan leather bags with traceable origins, and Loro Piana that subcontracts to ghost companies where workers are physically assaulted for not meeting quotas.

Why This Scandal Hits So Hard

Because luxury is about trust. We trust that a €1,200 cashmere sweater isn’t the product of a sweatshop. That a €4,000 coat doesn’t involve human rights violations.

Brands like Loro Piana trade on emotional capital. They sell exclusivity, tradition, sustainability. But when courts find them guilty of profiting off slave labor, that entire house of cards collapses. The betrayal runs deep – especially for loyal customers like myself who believed in their story.

Asia Does It Better?

I live part of the year in Asia. I’ve visited weaving villages in Luang Prabang, Laos. I’ve seen local women treated with dignity, paid fairly, and weaving on looms passed down for generations. There’s pride in the process. There’s respect for the maker.

How is it that one of the poorest nations in Asia manages to treat its workers better than Italy’s billion-dollar brands?

The Damage to Italy’s Image

Italy isn’t just a country. It’s a luxury brand in itself. But with Loro Piana, Armani, and Valentino all implicated in worker abuse, the “Made in Italy” label has become suspect. Bain & Company estimates that half of the world’s luxury goods are made in Italy. That makes this more than just a scandal. It’s a systemic failure.

If Italy doesn’t clean up its act, the damage will go beyond brand names. It will erode the very foundation of its economic identity.

And let’s be honest – nobody’s lining up to buy “Made in Misery.”

A Call for Transparency

What needs to happen now?

  • Full traceability. If you can track your coffee beans and your sneakers, you should be able to track your €5,000 coat.
  • End subcontracting through ghost firms. Period.
  • Worker protection and auditing. Third-party audits with teeth – not PR fluff.
  • Consequences. Fines are not enough. Names must be named. Products must be pulled.

And the press – including independent voices like mine – must be empowered, not bullied, to speak out.

The Future of Real Luxury

Luxury is not just about opulence. It’s about integrity. In 2025, consumers are savvy. Gen Z cares about the story behind the clothes. If brands don’t align with values, they will be exposed.

Zara has already understood that. Italian luxury? It’s still napping in silk sheets while the reputation train leaves the station.

It’s time for Italy to reweave its story – before its whole fashion empire comes apart at the seams.

Garden Party Time

Garden parties are the best because they are outdoors and make people happy. A couple of years ago my friends and I had a delightful garden party in my backyard. One friend made a green gazpacho that would put Wolfgang Puck a shivering… another made a peach sorbet that would have the Barefoot Contessa asking for an autograph. It was the most wonderful party where new and old friends met.

Decorations

We used mix and match floral napkins, cups and saucers. We had a sign at the front of my house that is the most viewed photo on my Pinterest account. My backyard was in full bloom so there was no need to buy flowers. And of course we all had citrus cream and citrus spray so there were no pesky mosquitos about.

Menu

The green gazpacho was a simple cold medley of cucumbers, cilantro, onion and a bit of cream that was served in vintage teacups. The main event were my biscuits. I grew up with my Grandparents biscuits but the ones I made were far from the hearty ones of my childhood. I made biscuits with sour cream with rosemary from garden. Lavender, also from my garden, and honey biscuits. I probably made 100 biscuits that day! We made sun tea from the mint in my backyard and the signature drink was Lavender 75. It is made with gin, lemon, lavender simple syrup and champagne or you can substitute with prosecco. Dessert was frozen peaches blended with honey and served in mason jars.

Venue

My backyard was resplendent in blue hydrangeas. I had enough chairs and tables in the backyard, so we were ready to go unless it rained. I don’t think we had a contingency plan, but I did have a tent in the basement just in case.

It was truly a lovely time, and the photos speak for themselves. Time for another one!

Being USDA Organic Certified is something we are quite proud of. As a small company being certified for 15 years is no small task. The annual audit always makes me nervous as rules change all the time, not to mention the financial investment. So sometimes I ask myself, is it worth it? Let’s look at what this entails:

Organics

Did you know that to have “organics” in the name of your company all the products you sell must be USDA Organic Certified? Yes the National  Organic Program actually owns the word. You could also be Ecocert certified, a European certification process that is less stringent and also ingredients that are manmade.

Process

It is not an easy process to be certified, we are audited annually. This audit is intensive and exhausting. This involves for example, tracing back each ingredient used in each product and cleaning logs.

Farming

For an ingredient to qualify as USDA Organic, regulation begins at the grower. Just like food, essential oils are agricultural products, which means that growing, harvesting and distillation must all meet government regulations. The actual farms, as well as the processing facilities, must be certified, and not just the final product.

Commitment

Revival Runway supports, promotes and celebrates Melbourne’s Queer Talent. It was quite y accident that I ended up at Abbotsford Convent, thanks to my friends Tim Neal and Nathan James (both photographers). I met them while photographing street style at Melbourne Fashion Week and decided to hang out at “one more show”!

I was not expecting to have so much fun photographing this runway show. It was more of a celebration! The support from the audience was palpable with hooting and cheering. The garments were full of colour and personality. All models, make-up artists and photographers were volunteers. I almost got thrown out of the venue before it started because a firebrand blue-haired lady walked up to me and quite assertively asked me, “And who exactly are you?” Thankfully Tim jumped to my rescue, and I stayed!

Glad I did because this was an absolute delight. Scroll away!

I don’t quite know everyone on the fashion scene in Australia yet but, the fashion designers who showcased at Revival Runway are Isadora Nim, Wilson Jedd Adams, Milky Plug Kid, Queery This, Design by Jade, Baaqiy, Chelsea Farquhar and Foot, and the performance was by Amber Scates.

And the last photograph is of Gabe, who was one of the guests at the show and after having seen Gabe at several other shows at MFW, I was besmirched by the personal style.

Quiet Luxury is a Fallacy

The term “quiet luxury” has gained popularity in recent years as a way to describe a new trend in luxury consumption. This trend is, allegedly, characterized by a more understated and subtle approach to luxury, where high-end products are bought for their quality and craftsmanship, rather than for their showiness or overt branding. However, the idea of “quiet luxury” is a load of crap because it still relies on buying extremely overpriced things that only the Uber-rich can afford.

Firstly, the very notion of “quiet luxury” is flawed because it suggests that luxury consumption can somehow be divorced from the broader social and economic context in which it takes place. In reality, the consumption of luxury goods is intimately tied to issues of wealth inequality and social status. Those who are able to afford luxury goods are typically part of a small, elite group of individuals who hold a disproportionate amount of wealth and power in society. By buying into the idea of “quiet luxury,” these individuals are simply attempting to justify their own excessive consumption in a way that is more palatable to others.

The show Succession is one of the main points of reference for this notion that luxury can be quiet. The story revolves around a family that owns one of the largest media companies in the world. Sure, they are not wearing flashy logos but they have private drivers and expensive houses. This is a perfect example of why there is no quiet luxury when you are a billionaire.

Moreover, the products that are typically associated with “quiet luxury” are often just as overpriced as their more ostentatious counterparts. For example, a “quiet luxury” handbag may not have the same flashy logos and embellishments as a more overtly branded bag, but it can still cost several thousand dollars. In many cases, the price of these items has little to do with their quality or craftsmanship, and more to do with the exclusivity that comes with owning something that only a select few can afford.

Another issue with the concept of “quiet luxury” is that it assumes that consumers are capable of making truly informed choices about the products they buy. In reality, the luxury industry is notorious for its lack of transparency, making it difficult for consumers to know where their products come from, how they were made, and whether they were produced ethically and sustainably. This means that even those who want to make more conscientious choices about their consumption are often left in the dark about the true cost of their purchases.

Ultimately, the idea of “quiet luxury” is a fallacy because it perpetuates the same old problems that have always been associated with luxury consumption. It reinforces the notion that wealth and status are very important things in life, and that owning expensive things is the ultimate sign of success. It also allows those who can afford luxury goods to justify their own consumption, while ignoring the broader social and economic implications of their actions.

In conclusion, the concept of “quiet luxury” is a false promise that does little to address the real problems with luxury consumption. If we truly want to create a more sustainable and equitable society, we need to move beyond the idea that owning expensive things is the ultimate goal in life. Instead, we should focus on building a world where everyone has access to the basic necessities of life, and where the pursuit of wealth and status is no longer the driving force behind our actions. Sorry, I do become a hippie every once in a while…

Bangkok Mall Raided in Crackdown on Counterfeit Luxury Goods

In a sweeping government-led crackdown, a popular Bangkok shopping mall was raided yesterday, revealing a vast inventory of counterfeit luxury bags and watches. The operation, spearheaded by a 150-strong task force of Royal Thai Police and Ministry of Commerce officials, marks the latest move in Thailand’s aggressive campaign to stamp out intellectual property violations.

According to Government Spokesperson Jirayu Huangsap, this operation reflects Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s commitment to aligning Thailand’s legal standards with World Trade Organization (WTO) obligations. The raid comes in response to over 2,000 public complaints submitted to the government’s 1111 hotline, detailing illicit businesses, bribery, online gambling, illegal websites, and e-cigarette sales.

Authorities have uncovered that counterfeit goods operations stretch far beyond one mall. Evidence links these illegal enterprises to human trafficking and undocumented foreign labour, with foreign nationals—many fluent in English—working as front-line sellers in tourist-heavy areas like Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya, Khon Kaen, and Bangkok. Monthly bribes between 50,000 and 100,000 baht per store were allegedly paid to certain officials, with total yearly illegal earnings estimated to surpass 200 million baht per area. Why are Thailand doing this duping raid?

Investigators also discovered that officials were using mule bank accounts to collect payments related to illegal websites, including online gambling operations. In some provinces, over 1,000 such sites are reportedly active, with trade volumes running into the billions. Bribes for maintaining these websites were said to range from 20,000 to 50,000 baht per URL.

Senior officials under investigation include individuals identified only as Miss A, Mr T, and Inspector N. The findings have been forwarded to Thailand’s Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC), the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), and the Department of Special Investigation (DSI).

Despite these efforts, Thailand remains on the United States Trade Representative’s (USTR) Special 301 Watch List for 2025 due to ongoing concerns about intellectual property protection. Still, the USTR has acknowledged Thailand’s progress, particularly reforms in copyright and patent laws and improvements in Collective Management Organization (CMO) operations governing music royalties.

The Thai government is now working closely with the Department of Intellectual Property, the national police, and international stakeholders to root out counterfeit sales and dismantle the transnational crime networks undermining the economy.

Citizens are encouraged to report any suspected sales of counterfeit goods or instances of official corruption. Complaints can be filed by calling 1111, mailing Voice of Thai People, Government House, Bangkok 10300, or emailing [email protected]
