Glow Up Without the Gag: Top Vitamin C Serums That Won’t Offend Your Nose from Avene, Naturium and Bubble Skincare with a Hello and Orange Naturals bonus!

by Lina Clémence May 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Vitamin C serums are like a tall glass of OJ for your face – packed with brightening power, antioxidant protection, and anti-aging magic. They help even out skin tone, fade dark spots, boost collagen and give your complexion that elusive lit-from-within glow.

But here’s the weird part: for something loaded with Vitamin C, they never smell like oranges. Or lemons. Or anything remotely citrusy. No, generally your face ends up smelling like hot dog water, old coins or something mysteriously metallic from a sci-fi lab. I accept that I am never getting orange zest but I got tired of mystery meat so went looking for some great Vitamin C options minus the gross smell and here are my top 3 picks:

Avène Vitamin Activ Cg Radiace Concentrated Serum – 30ml – $77 – a powerful solution for dull skin, pigmentation and signs of aging with a 94% naturally derived and 100% vegan formula containing three highly effective dermatological ingredients: Vitamin Cg (1.8%) – a stable and slow-release form of Vitamin C that offers antioxidant and brightening benefits equivalent to 20% pure Vitamin C; Niacinamide (3%) – works to regenerate the skin over time and visibly reduce dark spots; and Bakuchiol (1.5%) – a plant-based alternative to retinol, helps smooth wrinkles without irritation.

The serum provides an instant glow, and within just 15 days, skin feels smoother and more plumped. After one month of use, dark spots appear diminished.

It comes in a glass bottle with a dropper and has a light texture that layers under makeup and sunscreen without pilling. Great for all skin types, including sensitive. Best of all is the scent – sadly not citrus – but it is light and delicate and totally un-offensive!

Natrium Vitamin C Super Serum Plus – 30ml – $40.99 – a supercharged, multi-benefit serum that is formulated with vitamin c, retinol, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and salicylic acid to help improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles, smooth and brighten the appearance of skin, while also helping protect skin from environmental stressors. And formulated without parabens, phthalates, SLS, SLES, triclosan, formaldehyde, formaldehyde releasing agents, hydroquinone or animal testing.

Best of all it is formulated without a weird scent – it actually doesn’t smell like much of anything at all – acceptable! The texture is super smooth and light so great for layering under other creams and won’t upset  skin that is oily and likes to rebel at multiple products.

Bubble Skincare Day Dream Tone and Texture Serum Vitamin C + Niacinamide – 30ml – $24.99 – evens tone, reduces scarring and dark spots with a powerhouse formula containing: vitamin C – to promote a bright, smooth, even complexion and reduce sun damage; niacinamide – to hydrate skin, calm irritation, improve skin barrier function and reduce signs of aging; plant derived ceramides – to replenish the natural building blocks of your skin barrier for healthier skin; and alpha arbutin – works to visibly reduce the appearance of spots & uneven skin tone

This one also features a super-light texture and is specifically formulated without fragrance so has almost no scent at all – so layer away and no need to worry about nose wrinkles from an unpleasant smell!

These days you won’t just find your Vitamin C in skin products – turns out, it’s also good for other stuff…like your teeth!

Hello Super Mega Whitening Powered by Vitamin C Anticavity Fluoride Toothpaste – 82ml – $8.97 – a whitening mint toothpaste infused with naturally derived vitamin C, an alternative to peroxide for whitening teeth, it removes 94% of surface stains for teeth that are 2 shades whiter in 6 weeks and freshens breath with natural peppermint flavor and that is safe for everyday use.

It has a nice minty flavour that confuses me daily – my half-awake self sees the orange tube, registers Vitamin C and is expecting that citrus flavour and instead gets mint – don’t get me wrong, toothpaste should taste like mint but early-morning Lisamarie is not a good rememberer…

And while, slathering Vitamin C on your face is great for that radiant glow, let’s not forget the OG use: not dying of scurvy. If your diet’s slacking on the citrus (no judgment), a good supplement can be your immune system’s best friend – especially during cold season. Personally, I pop Vitamin C the second I feel a throat tickle – because glowing skin means nothing if you’re sneezing all over it…

Orange Naturals Vitamin C 1000mg – 120 vegetable capsules – $24.99 – an antioxidant for the maintenance of good health, it helps to prevent vitamin C deficiency and metabolize fats and protein – as well, it helps in wound healing, connective tissue formation and the development of bones, cartilage, teeth, and gums.

They do have some children chewable options if you aren’t a great pill taker but I actually found these nice and smooth so they go down easily!

Available at drug and grocery stores across Canada including Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall and online at orangenaturals.com and well.ca.

Winter Skincare | LANEIGE Firming Sleeping Mask Review

by Lina Clémence May 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

The past few months have gone by quickly — a blur of work, Netflix binges, and frozen cauliflower-crust pizzas. My skincare routine has taken a hit, and I’ve been trying to get my skin’s moisture back to its healthy pre-hibernation levels. There have been nourishing oils, hydrating serums and rich moisturizers on heavy rotation, but I find myself going back to the LANEIGE Firming Sleeping Mask* ($39) over and over again. And kind of…unsure about it? Now that I’ve almost gone through the entire jar (and lost the little scoop it came with), it’s time to decide if I’ll repurchase this overnight treatment or move on to something new.

LANEIGE Firming Sleeping Mask Review

I love overnight treatments. They are a lazy girl’s best friends, especially in winter. A good one can give dull skin its glow back in less than eight hours. The LANEIGE Firming Sleeping Mask is great for those evenings when all you want to do is take your makeup off with a wipe and go to bed. It works hard while you sleep, and you wake up with plump, hydrated skin.

The LANEIGE Firming Sleeping Mask has a really unique texture. If the Water Sleeping Mask (reviewed here) is a gel, the Firming Sleeping Mask is a jelly. When the product is scooped up from the jar, the surface gets chunky and then smooths itself out in seconds…like magic. It’s cold and slippery, which doesn’t sound great, but a little goes a long way and it feels like water on the skin once it warms up. It dries down quickly and without leaving a greasy film behind. My skin soaks it up so quickly, there’s nothing left to rinse off by morning.

LANEIGE Firming Sleeping Mask texture

This is a good mask layering with oils and serums for extra nourishment and hydration as it’s not quite as hydrating as others I’ve tried all by itself. I especially love using it with the fragrance-free Crambé oil I’ve been testing recently as it lets the beautiful scent of the LANEIGE Firming Sleeping Mask shine. It’s lightly fragranced with the same Sleepscent that is found in the Water Sleeping Mask — a relaxing and (hopefully) sleep-inducing blend of ylang-ylang, rose, sandalwood oil and orange flower. My skin is very sensitive to fragrances, but this one has never been a problem for me. Be sure to do a patch test if you have reactive skin!

Unlike the Water Sleeping Mask, which is all about hydration, the Firming Sleeping Mask is  — you guessed it! — all about firming and tightening the skin. As I get older, I definitely notice that my skin is losing some of its firmness and elasticity, especially when I’m dehydrated. I haven’t noticed any changes in my skin’s firmness or elasticity while using this mask, but I do like how plump and hydrated my skin is in the morning. I find that I miss the extra hydration from the Water Sleeping Mask formula, though someone who worries about the first signs of aging might prefer to trade some hydration for a little firming action.

LANEIGE Firming Sleeping Mask

TL;DR?

The Water Sleeping Mask is still my favourite overnight treatment from LANEIGE. It’s mostly down to the fact that I prefer the gel-like texture of the Water Sleeping Mask over a slightly chunky jelly texture of the Firming Sleeping Mask, but also because the first is more hydrating. The Water Sleeping Mask’s packaging is sleeker…and yes, I do pick products partly based on how they look on my dressing table when they’re a little more pricey. If firmness and elasticity are your main concerns, the Firming Sleeping Mask is a good option to target both signs of aging and hydration. For now, I’ll stick to the Water range…while I still can.

Skincare products I am testing and loving so far

by Lina Clémence May 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Sure, so we’re only a couple of weeks into 2024 but I am loving taking some time to sit and type and decided that sharing a few ‘in progress’ reviews was what I felt like doing today. I say in-progress because the products I want to share here are a mixture of new-ish to me products, so I would say I’ve been using them for 2-3 weeks ish on average. I like to really throughly try a product for a decent amount of time before sharing my thoughts so usually for a month plus but these are ones I just can’t wait to share my thoughts on so here goes.

Shiseido Waso Shikulime Gel-To-Oil Cleanser

To say I love the texture of this cleanser would be underplaying it. I absolutely adore it. I’ve always had a thing for an oil or balm cleanser, this is all the slippery goodness of an oil cleanser but less messy. As it starts out thicker then beautifully melts as you massage into skin it really is the cleanser that keeps on giving. Managing to be silky smooth and not remotely stripping. It does a great job at dissolving makeup but works well as a first or second cleanse step just as well. Or just stand alone if a single cleanse life is your thing.

This cleanser has earned itself a fast forward to top 5 list (along with the likes of the Elemis Cleansing Balm and Clarins Pure Melt) If you like that sort of melty oil-like goodness then this is one that you should add to your list. Trying more from Shiseido is definitely on my list for 2024.

No7 Future Renew Damage Reversal Eye Serum

I was lucky to be sent the Future Renew range back when it launched in 2023. However in chaos of moving house, I kept it in the box for months and only dug it out in December. But so far, loving the eye serum – it’s one of those lighter eye product textures that feels like a drink of water for the skin. I can’t confirm if it’s reversed any age related damage as such, but I can say it’s lovely and hydrating and leaves my notoriously dehydrated eye area moisturised but feeling fresh on each use – morning or evening (I’ve been using for both). So top marks from me on first few weeks of use, I will give one of the face creams a whirl next once I’ve finished of my current in-use selection soon.

Skin Rocks Retinoid 1

I have to confess I’ve had this product in my possession for quite a few months before giving it a proper test after Caroline kindly offered to get her team to send for me to try. Why did I wait to try? Well, not to sound dramatic but I can be nervous of retinol products. Yes I know, I am skincare/beauty obsessed and can still be nervous of retinol products. It’s the talk of retinol damaging skin barriers, flaking and purging. Having used the full on tret level skincare I can vouch for both the great results AND the skin reactions that can occur. I stand by the fact with the tret I have always done all the carefully-carefully steps but there’s still a concentration level that seems to trigger a dry/flaking upper lip line. Always specifically that area. I can’t fully explain it but I don;t love it. I do however, absolutely love the glow and smoothness that retinol products can give. So I persevere.

So what is all that waffle about? Let’s get back to what I’ve liked about Skin Rocks Retinoid 1 – I like that it’s gentle, it really is the ideal intro to a retinol routine if you’re either new to it, sensitive skinned or perhaps returning to use post pregnancy etc. (This was me when I first got started dipping my toe into the retinol world again). I have not yet had a single issue with this, it applies and absorbs like a dream and my skin is very happy using it. Do I see the same level of results as with tretinoin? No, but that’s as I would expect – it’s the level one, a different ingredient (Retinoid vs tretinoin, in very very basic terms, same family – different ingredients and thus different result levels expected). This is really the ideal intro to a retinol whilst you build your tolerance, let your skin adapt as you use and take it from there.

So if you’re entry level retinol user, sensitive or just a little nervous about it like I mentioned – give the Skin Rocks Retinoid 1 a whirl.
