SUN & SUN DAMAGE

by Lina Clémence July 12, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Unprotected sun exposure leads to significant skin damage. This contributes to premature aging, wrinkles, and a higher risk of skin cancer. The amount of damage increases with prolonged exposure, especially during strong sunlight hours (11:00 AM to 3:00 PM) and in the summer months. Sunburns, particularly during childhood, are strongly linked to an increased risk of developing skin cancer later in life.

  • UV radiation from the sun damages the skin’s collagen and elastin, which are responsible for skin elasticity and strength. This damage can lead to wrinkles, sun spots, and a loss of skin firmness.

  • Melanin is the pigment that gives your skin its color. It plays a role in protecting against UV damage, but its protective effect is limited. People with lighter skin tones have less melanin and are therefore more vulnerable to sun damage.

  • UV Radiation Types:

    • UVA rays are associated with long-term skin damage, including wrinkles, and may contribute to some skin cancers. UVA rays cause skin damage throughout the day and all year long, even in the winter.

    • UVB rays are primarily responsible for sunburns, and they are a major factor in the development of skin cancer.

  • Skin Cancer Risk: Repeated sunburns significantly increase the lifetime risk of skin cancer, especially melanoma, the most dangerous type. All skin types should protect against this but lighter skin’s, with lower levels of melanin are more prone to skin cancer.

  • Prevention: Protecting skin from excessive sun exposure is crucial to minimizing the risks of sun damage and skin cancer. This can be done through various measures, including wearing sunscreen, protective clothing, seeking shade, and avoiding tanning beds. My favorite sun protective clothing is from Coolibar. I just got bak from my daughter’s wedding in Costa Rica and found plenty of opportunities to wear these fun, protective, stylish pieces.

How much sun is too much?

We all know that too much sun is bad for your skin. But how do you know how long you can stay in the sun? You can’t see or feel UV light, so it’s difficult to know how strong it is and what effect it will have on your skin. Summer heat isn’t a good indicator here because UV radiation might also be present when it’s cold outside. This is because heat from the sun doesn’t come from UV light, but from infrared light in the sun’s rays.

The higher in the sky the sun is, the stronger the UVB radiation on Earth. This is both true in terms of the sun’s position over the course of the day – it’s highest at midday – and in terms of geographical location. So UV radiation is particularly high close to the equator, for instance in Costa Rica, Florida, Thailand or Central America. It is also high in Australia and New Zealand because these countries are near the hole in the ozone layer above the Antarctic. The thinner the ozone layer, the stronger the UV radiation levels.

UVB exposure tends to be more of a problem in mountainous regions than in lower regions. Snow, water and light-colored sand reflect UV light too, increasing your exposure.

What is the UV Index?

The UV Index is a measure of the current intensity of UVB radiation in a certain location. The higher the current UV Index rating, the higher the radiation levels, and the more likely you are to get a sunburn.

The higher the UV Index, the more protection you will need. UV radiation is particularly high in mountainous regions, at the equator and in regions where the ozone layer is thin, such as in Australia. In most places, UVB radiation is at its strongest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. because the sun is high in the sky then. UVB exposure is also more of a problem in the summer than in the winter. Thick clouds can reduce UV radiation, but thin clouds don’t provide much protection.

How much UV radiation can your skin handle?

Intensive and frequent sunbathing can be too much for your skin to handle. Only if you gradually increase UV exposure over a period of two to three weeks, and only expose your skin to moderate UV radiation, can you achieve a lasting tan that makes the corneal layer of your skin thicker, providing a little protection from the sun. Although this natural UV protection can prevent sunburn to some extent, it can’t protect you from all of the different types of damage caused by UV light, and can’t prevent skin cancer. However, a tan is an indicator of UV damage. This is especially true for damage to the DNA component of skin cells. A little sun means a little damage to your DNA, a lot of sun means a lot of damage. DNA damage means cells can no longer function the way they were originally programed to. This adds to wrinkles, textural changes and sun spots.

The skin of people who are sensitive to light can’t protect itself from UV radiation for long. In very fair-skinned people, UV radiation starts becoming harmful after about 5 to 10 minutes. The table below shows the maximum amount of time people with different Fitzpatrick skin types can expose untanned and unprotected skin to the sun per day without getting a sunburn.

The following can help you determine what type of skin you have:

  • very light skin, very often with freckles

  • reddish or strawberry blond hair

  • blue or gray eyes

  • UV radiation leads to sunburn within 10 minutes, skin doesn’t tan

  • light skin, often with freckles

  • blond or brown hair

  • all eye colors

  • UV radiation leads to sunburn within 20 minutes, skin hardly tans or tans only moderately

  • light or light brown skin, rarely with freckles

  • dark blond or brown hair

  • gray or brown eyes

  • UV radiation leads to sunburn within 30 minutes, skin tans easily

  • light brown or olive-colored skin, no freckles

  • dark brown hair

  • brown or dark brown eyes

  • UV radiation leads to sunburn within 50 minutes, skin soon becomes deeply tanned

Very light skin and light skin (types I and II) are typical in places like Scandinavia and Great Britain, and people who have a medium brown skin tone with dark eyes and dark hair (type IV) mainly live in the Mediterranean and geographically similar areas. People with even darker or black skin (types V and VI) have their roots in places like certain areas of Asia or Africa.

I hope you start this sunny season safely to ensure a beautiful complexion for a lifetime.

July 2025 Six Paintings – 12 Months #1: Sun, Water Maine by Georgia O’Keeffe

by Lina Clémence July 1, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

July 1, 2025

July??? I’m sort of amazed. You would think that I would adjust to the passage of time, after a few years…

Remember – there will be posts every weekday this week, and on both Monday and Tuesday next week. Because these posts for the paintings aren’t very big, I give you lots of them all in a row!

Let’s jump into this perfectly perfect summer painting:

So many of us have been living with ridiculously hot weather for a while, so it was easy to get into the mood to get this heroine some true summer clothes!

I cheated just a bit on the Weekly Timeless Wardrobe; I’m calling the striped tee shirt “sleeveless” when of course it isn’t! But our heroine already has all of her tee shirts, and I felt pretty comfortable that finding another print sleeveless top was going to be DIFFICULT… So I cheated!

There are no referees at The Vivienne Files…

I really love the colors of this wardrobe. Navy and beige are so uncomplicated and classic, but the green and blue clothes brighten up everything:

And her accessories are both fun and practical:

Obviously, our heroine has plenty of options for how to wear her new garments. As always, if you don’t have ideas, you don’t want to buy something.

I particularly like to remember that a tank top can be a perfect thing to wear under a cardigan on those days when the weather is going to be somewhere between nippy in the morning and sweaty in the afternoon!

It’s difficult to find a good way to wear shorts in the colder weather, but it’s nice to see that most of what you buy for summer can also carry into much of the rest of the year. No reason to pack things away if you still wear them, right?

love,

Janice

p.s. Ten years ago, our painting was by Augustus John, with stunning turquoise, camel and gold…

Misunderstanding Sun Protection – Euphoria Skin and Wellness

by Lina Clémence May 31, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

Protecting our skin from the harmful effects of the sun is essential for maintaining healthy, youthful skin. Unfortunately, there are some misconceptions that leave many people without enough sun protection. It is our job as skin care providers to put a stop to these myths so clients have proper protection and get optimal results.

Proper use of sun block

Sunscreen will prevent me from getting Vitamin D

Vitamin D is an essential vitamin needed by our body to carry out everyday functions including immune support bone health, muscle function, calcium absorption, and more. Our skin synthesizes vitamin D through UVB exposure; and SPF 30 sunscreen blocks about 97% of the sun’s UVB rays. This can be a concern for many people, especially those that are low in vitamin D. Research shows that normal use of sunscreen does not result in vitamin D deficiency. Not only do most people not apply enough sunscreen to stop the body from producing vitamin D, but we only need about 10-30 minutes of sun exposure to create enough of it. If someone is truly concerned with their vitamin D levels, they should have their doctor do a simple blood test and discuss the use of a vitamin D supplement. You can also consider incorporating more vitamin D-rich foods (like salmon, cheese and fortified milk) into their diet.

Sunscreen is bad for you

Several chemical sunscreens contain oxybenzone or octinoxate, ingredients that some studies suggest are endocrine disruptors. However, there are no studies that prove that these ingredients lead to any harmful effects. In fact, the American Cancer Society released a statement saying it “encourages the use of FDA-approved sunscreens,” which includes those with oxbenzone and octinoxate. Another concern with chemical sunscreens is they can be irritating to sensitive skin. For consumers who are concerned, they can choose a sunscreen that does not contain chemical filters, such as a physical sunscreen containing titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Overall, the most important thing is that we wear sunscreen, whether the prefer a chemical or physical.

It’s good to get a base tan before vacation

Most people are aware that there is a risk of sunburn when going to warmer climates where the sun’s rays are much stronger. There is a big misconception that by getting a “base tan,” they’ll be provided sun protection on their vacation. This is simply not true. According to the U.S. Surgeon General and proven by many clinical studies, a base tan only provides an SPF of 3 or less. This is essentially meaningless in terms of sun protection. The best thing the client can do is apply SPF 30 or higher every two hours.

Makeup with SPF is enough

Many people believe that using makeup products that contain SPF is sufficient to protect their skin from the sun. While makeup with SPF offers some level of protection, it is often not enough to provide adequate coverage. To ensure effective sun protection, it is recommended to use a separate sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection before applying makeup.

It is well known that sunscreen use prevents skin cancer and slows the appearance of aged skin. The use of antioxidants with sunscreens should also be a priority; although sunscreens protect from UV exposure, damaging free radicals can still be created. You should protect all areas of the body, including the scalp. Clarifying misconceptions about sun protection is crucial for ensuring the long-term health of our skin. Remember, when using sunscreen, the benefits will always outweigh the risks!

[Review] Esfolio Berry Mix Sun Cream – Asian Beauty Obsessed

by Lina Clémence May 29, 2025
written by Lina Clémence

I got this from my recent YesStyle Haul! If you’ve been reading my posts for years, you know from my time in Taiwan that Esfolio is one of my all-time favorite companies. I bought their sheet masks religiously while I was in Taiwan and now I can find them pretty frequently at my local Marshall’s or TJ-Maxx.

Anyway, when I saw this I couldn’t resist trying it out! I was in need of a sunscreen anyway and this called my name. Here’s the packaging with the ingredients:

I think it’s great that they list the percentages for each fruit/plant extract that they promote – sometimes when they promote certain ingredients and they don’t list how much is in the product I feel slightly skeptical. I like the transparency here! I put the ingredients that they are promoting in their ad for the product in bold.

Here’s the list of ingredients more clearly:

Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Fruit Extract (9.56%), Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Fruit Extract (9.56%), Fragaria Ananassa (Strawberry) Fruit Extract (9.56%), Rubus Fruticosus (Blackberry) Fruit Extract (9.56%), Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry) Fruit Extract (9.56%), Euterpe Oleracea (Acai) Fruit Extract (9.56%), Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Dipropylene Glycol, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Glycerin, Dimethicone, 4-Methylbenzylidene Camphor, Octocrylene, Niacinamide, Cetearyl Alcohol, Stearic Acid, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, 1,2-Hexanediol, Sorbitan Stearate, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Polysorbate 60, Hydroxyacetophenone, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Adenosine, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Arginine, Ethylhexylglycerin, Aluminum Hydroxide, Disodium EDTA, Xanthan Gum, Chlorphenesin, Fragrance

Click HERE for the CosDNA analysis!

Besides the fruit extracts, I like seeing Niacinamide in there for evening out my skin tone and calming my skin down. I also like that “fragrance” is the last ingredient in there – it’s true, too, there isn’t much of a scent to this product.

Also, the front of the box advertises that 57.36% of the product is the “Berry Mix” and if you add up the percentages in the list, it’s true.

Twist-off cap and standard foil
Swatch

It’s called a sun cream and it feels like one! When I put it on, it reminds me of a light moisturizer – my skin feels softer after application. It does give my normal-type skin a nice, soft glow, so I think this would be great for dry- to normal-types but I would be a little hesitant to recommend it to oily-skin types because I would worry it would be a bit too glowy for them.

It has both UVA & UVB protection. This Sun Cream by Esfolio is one of four in their Sun Cream line – this one is called “Anti-Wrinkle” and comes in a pink tube, but they also have other versions:

They promote that they don’t use water as a filler in their ingredients, and instead use their extracts – which is true. They say there’s no white cast – I didn’t experience any! I took pictures on very sunny days and you can’t tell I’m wearing it. It doesn’t feel oily, it feels more like a light moisturizer, so I’d agree with their statements – even the “NO high cost”, haha!

I’ve been using this daily for about a week now, and I’ve been really liking it. It didn’t break me out and it plays well with my foundations so far. It keeps my skin moisturized, to boot!

I bought this on YesStyle for $5.72 (original listing price is $15.90 – as of right now it’s still on sale!). This is such a bargain that I’ll definitely be buying this again! Love the ingredients, love the product!

Hope this helped!! ❤

P.S. I’ve been a long-time customer of YesStyle (I’m talking years) and I’ve got a discount for you if you’d like use them! Use “ABOBSESSED20” to get 5% off your order!
